2015 Annual Report - Art Therapy Studio
2015 Annual Report - “The Scheduler” , a collage by Gayle Kollus Letter from the Board President DEAR FRIENDS OF THE ART THERAPY STUDIO, 2015. What a year of change and growth for the Art Therapy Studio! Joining us in mid-January of 2015, our new Executive Director Shannon Scott-Miller hit the ground running and hasn’t taken off those track shoes yet! Under her leadership, she has built upon the strong foundation laid by leaders before her and ushered in a new era of growth and opportunity Partnerships have been strengthened and expanded, ideas imagined years ago have gained momentum, and she has overseen the expansion of our services throughout Northeast Ohio, necessitating the hiring of several new therapists. As you take the time to read our notable accomplishments included in this report, and there are many, I ask two things. First, read closely the quotes of our wonderful artists. They are heartfelt words sharing with you how the power of art has brought healing to their lives. Second, know that it is only because of you that we are able to share these stories. It is that simple. Because of your generosity, the Art Therapy Studio, in its 48th year, continues to be the gold standard provider of vital art therapy services in our community. There is a beautiful quote attributed to famed artist, Paul Klee. He said, “Art does not reproduce what we see. It makes us see.” These words truly define the healing power of art and remind us why organizations like the Art Therapy Studio are so important to our community. Since its inception in 1967, our programs have been developed around the philosophy that art making is central to healing and wellness. We’ve provided innovative therapeutic art services to more than 50,000 people throughout Cuyahoga and neighboring counties in a variety of settings. We provide customizable and fully integrated fee-for-service programs at area agencies, inpatient hospitals, employee wellness programs, and professional education workshops. We also offer quarterly, 11-week “Discover the Artist Within You” classes at 4 community studios for underserved individuals with emotional, cognitive, or physical needs as well as retirees, caregivers, and others who simply want to learn more about art in a supportive environment. All of our programs use the creative process of making art to improve and enhance the wellbeing of individuals of all ages. •Collaboration •Accountability •Sustainability BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN ART THERAPY • Provide an expressive outlet when words are inadequate or unavailable • Reduce stress • Improve cognitive skills • Encourage social interaction • Help individuals regain a sense of control • Build positive coping skills • Nurture a sense of accomplishment • Help build a positive identity • Provide relaxation and enrichment “This place helps me live my dream of being an artist.” – Marc R. - Painting by Kayla Figeroa depicting what the brain looks like during a seizure In The Words of Our Artists “Being a part of the Art Therapy Studio has been one of my greatest blessings since moving to Northeast Ohio. Art Therapy Studio’s programs are made possible in part thanks to the generous support of the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. Cuyahoga Arts & Culture’s sole funding source is a dedicated cigarette tax approved by Cuyahoga County voters in 2006 and renewed in 2015. Funding for our work in addictions and mental health is generously provided by the ADAMHS Board of Cuyahoga County. As part of the agency’s efforts to expand its continuum of services, three of four art therapy grants were awarded to Art Therapy Studio to provide services at three local agencies. 2015 Overview TOTAL REACH 3,187....
