WHITEHALL--The Whitehall City Council received bids last week from White Lake
Disposal Service and Kriesel Disposal Service
to provide contract trash collection in the City
of Whitehall through the next fiscal year.
This year both contractors bid the same
amount for the year, $12,000.
^
Because the cost of house-to-house trash
Collection is on the rise (i.e. $2,000 more than
Ust year) the city council is considering
discontinuing this service.
Other trash disposal programs will continue in operation in Whiehall. These
programs include the annual fall pick-up of
leaves, the popular "Dial-a-Dumper" pro-
gram, annual spring clean-up and the
provision of a disposal site presently under
contract with White Lake Sanitary Landfill.
Since the latter service is known to be
limited in its availability, the City has-been
instrumental in the formation of the White
Lake Solid Waste Authority, an authority
formed expressly to construct a solid waste
transfer station to be located at the Muskegon County Wastewater Management site,
east of Whitehall on Colby Street. (This
program alone will cost an additional $20,000
in fiscal 1980-81. The transfer station will
replace the sanitary landfill service and will
provide a place for residents to haul to and
dispose of trash other than garbage.
The Whitehall City Council is keenly
interested in receiving comments from
residents in the community pertaining to the
discontinuance of the weekly house-to-house
trash pick-up contract. The council anticpates
arriving at a decision at its next meeting June
24 at 7:30 p.m. Public comment is solicitated
at that meeting, or you may call the city hall,
894-4048 at any time during the work week,
and your comment will be transcribed to
present to the council.
"Please take a few minutes and provide
your input into this important decision that
the city council is obligated to reach," said
William E. Beauvais, City Manager.

AACC millage
renewal vote
next week
MUSKEGON COUNTY-Voters will go to
the polls June 24 to vote on a 1.5 mill renewal
by Muskegon Community College in order to
^ p t a i n its current program.'
The renewal has received the endorsement of the MCC millage renewal committee
which has been working hard for its passage
next week.
MCC officials say that without the
renewal that programs like criminal justice,
drafting, graphic arts, broadcasting, sociology and journalism will be cut out of its
program. This is the school's second request
for millage following an unsuccessful try
^ a r l i e r this year. Currently many graduates
W o m area high schools attend MCC.
For example, about 37 percent of this
year's Whitehall graduating class plan on
attending MCC.
THOUSANDS OF PERSONS viewed the White Lake
Area Arts and Crafts Fair Saturday and Sunday.
This pottery-making operation facinates young and old
alike.

WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP-- An 18year-old Montague Township youth, a recent
graduate of Montague High School, was
killed early last Saturday morning when the
car he was riding in hit a tree near
Holton-Whitehall Road and Hyde Park.
Troy W. Lohman, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Gordon Lohman, of Post Road, was pronounced dead at the scene by county medical
officials after the car left the road at a high
rate of speed and tumbled down an
embankment into a tree. The scene is the site
of a sharp curve ont he narrow rural road.
The driver of the auto, Jay H. Veeneman,
of Muskegon was taken to Hackley Hospital
in serious condition with multiple fractures
and abrasions.
Lohman was an 1979 All-Conference
tackle with the football team, active in school
and very popular with schoolmates. He had
been employed at the White Lake Nursery.

WHITE RIVER TOWNSHIP-The rising incidence of vanalism and disturbances at
Medbury Park in White River Township have
become a sticky problem for both the
township and the city of Montague.
The " p a r k " (actually the sand dunes on
Lake Michigan just north of The Channel),
was the topic of considerable discussion both
at the township meeting early this month and
^ the city council meeting.
At the township meeting officials asked
for police protection to handle mounting
problems at the park, whibh has become a
favorite gathering spot for young people who
have enjoyed nearly complete freedom while
drinking and smoking assorted substances. A
lack of supervision of any kind has helped
create this situation, and in Northern Muskegon County the absence of any comprehensive activities for young people has compounded the problem.
a
Supervisor R. C. Wackernagle
and
^ m i s t e e Lyle Leeke recently visited the
for teens or problem park
Montague Council in an effort to enlist its
aid. Although located in White River, the
park actually belongs to the city. Township
officials would like the right to control the
park through an ordinance and to charge
admission. Currently many fishermen use the
park free.
Also attending the meeting with Township attorney Tom Johnson and Richard Eck
of t h e Department of Natural Resources,
which owns the land adjoining the park.
Complicating matters is the fact that two
cottages still on the property are leased and
being lived in. City officiaJs feel that the
cottages are creating some of the problems.
A great deal of discussion by arearesidents has centered around development
of the property, better control if its use,
trespassing, rowdies and better parking. All
complicated issues and offering no simple
solution in sight.
Blue Lake to operate an European camp in Bavaria
WHITE LAKE-Blue Lake Fine Arts
Camp announced today that it will operate a
music camp in Europe during the summer of
1981. Blue Lake Vice President Gilbert F.
Stansell said "Blue Lake in Bavaria" will be
located in a small community in the Alps
between Munich and Oberammergau in
southern Germany.
"Blue Lake in Bavaria" will be an
extension of the Blue Lake International
Exchange Program that has sent bands,
orchestras and choirs to Europe annually
since 1970. " W e have been studying the
possibility of operating a music camp in
Europe for several years and believe the time
is ripe to start a European Branch," Stansell
said.
Initially, "Blue Lake in Bavaria" will
operate for one month and involve 100
American and European students. The wind
and percussion students will spend nearly
two weeks living and working together in
intensive rehearsals and instruction at facilities near the community Rottenbuch. This
session will be followed by a two-week
concert tour of Europe.
/
The appointment of Robert P. Koehs, Sr.
as Physical Plant Director of Blue Lake Fine
Arts Camp was announced today. Blue Lake
President Fritz Stansell said Koehs will be
responsible for all construction, maintenance, transportation, grounds, security and
housekeeping at the 500-acre fine arts camp
and Blue Lake's facilities in Whitehall.

Freon 22
for DuPont?
WHITE RIVER TOWNSHIP -The final
hearing on the approval of the production of
Freon 22 by E. I. duPont's Montague plant
was set for Tuesday by the Michigan Air
Pollution Control Commission. Results of
that hearing are not known as we go to press.
Some concern over the permit has been
expressed by township residents at recent
meetings of the township board. The main
concern revolves around the emission of
Freon 23 , a by-product of Freon 22, officials
say. DuPont officials insist
that the
production will not create an air pollution
problem.
Currently Freon 22 is being produced at
DuPont's Louisville, Ky. plant. Township
officials insist they are only concerned if the
air admissions are carcinogenic. Plant Manager Richard Emery has assured the board
that the new product will not harm anyone's
health or the environment.

MUSKEGON-Steven M. Simon has
been appointed to the position of publications
editor for Howmet Turbine Components
Corporation (HTCC). He will be based at the
Corporate General Offices in Muskegon.
In his new position, Simon will be
responsible for the writing and editing of
corporate publications and the planning and
administering of the firm's advertising and
public relations program.
He is a native of Dayton, Ohio, most
recently employed at Westinghouse architectural systems division in Grand Rapids as
Public Relations Specialist. Previously he
held communications positions with NCR
Corporation and Steelcase. Simon received
his B.A. degree from Miami University,
Oxford, Ohio.
(Publisher's Note: So would we. We are
glad to see more young people learning to
read a newspaper. What you haven't learned
and they are not teaching COLLEGE journalism graduates is that newspapers are also a
business and in order to keep their doors
open must make enough money to pay the
bills. Last year we laid off four staff
members. Currently our nation is in a
recession. Newspapers in many parts of
Michigan have experienced a 20 to 30 percent
business loss in the last year. Many others,
because of rising postal costs, increases by
Canadian paper mills, have simply gone out
of business. Like your parents or the school
district, we can only spend what we have. As
space becomes available, we will try harder.
However, your thoughts are well organized
and written. Good wishes for the future.)

HEY FOLKS I'm told this year the log floats.! Saws are

have added two more events to the Lumberjack Contest as
(chainsaw and canting competition - 3 classes in chainsaw
So all you fireplace lumberjacks can show your skills. So
tune-em up and sharpen them up. Canting competition with a big spike and hooked pole a short distance like
the lumberjace had to. I'll bet you can't do it. The contest
has more prizes and starts at 1:00 in Goodrich Park,
Whitehall.
MUSKEGON COUNTY-Who says one
vote doesn't mean much? Just ask Incumbent
School Board Member Jacqualyn Hansen,
who last week turned back challenger Terry
Wildfong in the Duck Creek School District
by just one, slim vote.
Incumbents in the Montague and Whitehall School Districts won re-election easily as
the voting was light with no local millage
requests on the June ballots.
A two-pronged proposal by the Muskegon
County Intermediate School District won a
partial victory when the request of a half-mill
was approved by the county's voters. But an
additional requestsfor a $6.8-million bonding
proposition to build new facilities went down
to defeat by nearly 2500 votes. No decision on
whether to ask for another election on the
bonding issue has been made.

Dear Mr. Bennett:
We are students of Montague's Nellie B.
Chisholm Middle School and members of the
eighth grade journalism class. We have
learned many things about writing newspaper articles and producing a newspaper
this year. We have organized our own school
newspaper, yearbook, and also made our own
television show.
We have learned that a newspaper's main
purpose is to print the news. Your front page
is always filled with news and looks good. But
the rest of the paper is mainly advertising.
Through our experiences this year, we have
also learned that the more time you take in
organizing and putting together a newspaper, the better it will turn out. We believe
that there have been some less than well
organized pages in your recent papers.
We would like to see more local news
printed and also an editorial page so you can
print our letter and others.
Sincerely,
Eighth Grade Journalism Class

Dear Darwin:
On behalf of the Whitehall Athletic
Department I would like to thank you tor your
fine sports coverage this past school year
1979-80.
Without a doubt Whitehall has had a host
of fine athletes this past year again. You have
been willing to report their accomplishments
and it is sincerely appreciated by the young
people involved.
Please keep the good work up and I want
you to know we support your paper 100
percent.
Cordially yours,
Dan Brink
Athletic Director
To the Editor:
This is to the person who wrote concerning the drinking that goes on in the Montague
and Whitehall School Systems. Yes, I agree
there is a problem with drinking while being
under age.
In answer to the question, " W h o are
these 21 and 22 year olds getting the k e g s ? "
It is obviously people who have graduated
from these schools, but have not really
" g r a d u a t e d " from high school. These people
are possibly older brothers and sisters still
hanging around the high school kids. I,
myself am 20 years old and you wouldn't
catch me dead around 14-18 year-old drinking
brats I
The 21 and 22 year old kids getting the
beer is only part of the source. Some
storeowners don't card all of the time, and it
is easy to get beer if you look old. Another
point to make is that possibly the clerk at the
cash register is related or knows the beer
consumer.

My sincere appreciation to all
those who extended best wishes
to me In my retirement. I am
overwhelmed with all the kind
expressions by the Whitehall
Board of Education, the administrators, my colleagues, students
and community.
My continuing wish for Whitehall School Is that each student
will attain those goals in education which lead to a satisfying and
fulfilling life. I am proud of the
very many Whitehall
School
graduates who have entered useful and gratifying occupations,
establishing themselves In their
lives of service to others.
Needless to say, I have greatly
enjoyed my years of association
with my colleagues.
I am deeply grateful for all the
cards, notes, flowers, and all the
rest which were so kindly bestowed on me during the last
several weeks. God bless you all,
always.
Love from ybur friend,
Ruth M. Cordell
