On behalf of La Serna high School and Friends of La Serna, I would like to welcome you to our Casino Night and Silent Auction. Friends of La Serna was chartered in 1975 and thrives today because of the commitment and hard-work of parent leadership and their spirit of volunteerism. They truly demonstrate the culture of collaboration that is the heart of La Serna and I am very grateful for all their efforts in creating this special evening. La Serna High School is dedicated to providing a culture of high standards, support, and success for all students. Our school is strengthened by our strong parent and community support. These relationships coupled with our school-wide commitment to doing “Whatever it Takes,” to ensure success for all students makes us truly unique. La Serna has been recognized four times as a California Distinguished School, named a Best High School by U.S. News & World Report, awarded The Golden Bell Award for our student mentor programs, and consistently earns top scores on state and national assessments. Our cocurricular programs continue to experience great successes including championship athletic teams, award winning co-curricular programs, and outstanding music and performing arts programs. The mission of Friends of La Serna is to “provide the extras our students deserve” and your attendance this evening will make this possible. Tonight promises to be a fun-filled evening where we come together to celebrate and raise funds for our school’s curricular, co-curricular, and athletic programs. Your participation this year as a sponsor will ensure that we achieve our fundraising goals. Proceeds will be given back to our school programs, continuing to support the high quality extra-curricular activities being offered to our students through programs such as OASIS, Expanded Horizons, PUENTE and many more. With your support, last year alone, we were able to provide classroom equipment and supplies, computer and film technology as well as sports equipment and also helped offset the cost of various sports uniforms. This is only a partial list of the type of support that our students received because of your generous contributions. Our goal is to continue to provide all students with the opportunities and extras they deserve. New Puente Program Banner “Friends of La Serna, the Puente Team is very grateful for your generosity. Friends of La Serna "Providing the Extras Our Students Deserve" 5 FRIEND OF THE YEAR: Dr. Joshua Samanta, DC, CCSP, CSCS, NRCME Cert. Dr. Josh is truly honored to be nominated 2015 Friend of the Year and thanks Nancy Lopez, FOLS board members, Ann Fitzgerald and the entire school staff for their continual commitment to LSHS. Dr. Josh is a long time LS supporter, including sponsoring many events, being guest speaker for the Sports Careers Academy, hosting students for clinical rounds and performing physicals at the Uptown Wellness Center. Over the past decade, he has treated many school staff and students and has worked alongside great staff like Kathy Abell, Steve Hemenway, Randy Castillo, Coach Beltran and Varsity football coaches on the field. In the community, Dr Josh is an active board member of the Whittier Community Foundation, Activate Whittier and SCUHS. He is also involved in on-site health, wellness and ergonomic programs at companies throughout LA and Orange Counties. His very first encounter with LS was through the Whittier Chamber of Commerce “Principal For A Day” program with former principal Leo Camalich – a truly eye-opening experience. While on campus, Dr Josh liked the Crimson and Gold colors so much, he adopted these colors for his own clinic, now in its 14th year in Uptown Whittier. A true crowning moment was when LS won the CIF Championship in 2013. On a personal level, Dr Josh was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, graduated from the University of Toronto, then came down to Los Angeles for the Doctor of Chiropractic program at the Southern California University of Health Sciences. He then furthered his studies in Sports Medicine to become a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician. It was while in chiropractic college that he met his incredible wife, Celeste: “It was love at first adjustment”. Today, she is “Houston Mission Control” for the family, with 3 active boys, making life exciting and exhausting (but he wouldn’t trade it for the world). As part of his ongoing therapy, Dr. Josh enjoys playing ice hockey, tennis, and skiing should it ever snow. Dr. Josh continues to appreciate being a part of the Lancer legacy, and is honored to play a part in such a proactive school that truly cares for its students. In Recognition Of “Friends” Who Have Made A Difference And Taken An Active Interest In Promoting Student Excellence. TEACHER OF THE YEAR: Mr. Steve Hemenway has been an integral part of La Serna High School for the past 25 years. He is man of high character and is a true servant leader. He has made a positive impact on our campus as a teacher, coach, and athletic director. In and out of the classroom he does a tremendous job motivating students and preparing them for their future. Currently, Steve teaches in our Sports’ Careers Academy and Physical Education Department. He has also taught for many years at Rio Hondo College. As the Athletic Director, Steve has overseen every aspect of our athletic program for the past decade. Steve is well respected and valued by the athletes, coaches and parents. Under his leadership he has guided our athletic program to tremendous success. Steve is married to his beautiful wife, Nancy. They have three children Christie, Natalie, and Michael. STAFF OF THE YEAR: Mrs. Patricia (Trish) Garcia joined the La Serna family in 2006, the same year her daughter started high school here. Trish is very talented and has worked in many offices including the library, attendance, curriculum, and most recently as principal’s secretary. She loves helping students and working with all the LS staff and teachers. Trish has been married 24 years to her high school sweetheart Tom. They have 3 daughters, Lindsey (22) (her new son-in-law Ronnie), Allison (19) and Nicole (14). Two of her daughters are La Serna Grads and her youngest will be attending La Serna as a freshman next year. Trish said, “I have been blessed to have the greatest job working at La Serna, I look forward to coming to work every day.” 6 Casino Royale Evening’s Program Saturday, March 14, 2015 - 6:30 P.M. While the face of the school has evolved over the years, the heart and soul of La Serna is very much the same today as it was back then. Its friends, family, community, school administration and of course the students that has kept La Serna evolving and striving to reach new heights. We want to Thank You for supporting this year’s Friends of La Serna 2015 Casino Royale fund raiser. Your support and generosity makes a big difference to all of our students as well as to La Serna. Through our “friends", we continue to carry out the Mission to raise and distribute supplementary funds annually to enhance all campus-wide programs, wherever needed. It is important that our local businesses, Whittier-area community, and community leaders, continue to support and sponsor our efforts. We simply could not do this without you. We look forward to continuing the relationship with our “friends” for many more years to come. Tonight we are proud to honor an exceptional teacher and staff member who have made notable contributions to La Serna. We are also honored to have an outstanding “Friend of Year” who has made a difference in our community and has been extremely supportive of Friends of La Serna and La Serna High School throughout the years. Last year (2013/14), the Friends of La Serna raised over $40,000 through its fund raising efforts throughout the year. This year (2014/15), we have increased our fund raising efforts to try and surpass last year’s total. Every dollar that is raised goes back to enrich our La Serna students’ educational experience in a variety of ways. With over 30 sports teams, clubs and organizations all actively enriching and contributing to a diverse high school experience, we are happy to see that La Serna is even greater today than it was back in 1961. Thanks again for your support. We hope you enjoy your evening and get a chance to connect with people that share your same passion and commitment to La Serna High School. Your tax deductible donation is welcome and sincerely appreciated to help meet our annual Friends of La Serna 2015 goal. Dennis S.
