See a preview of this year’s wonderful auction items! (page 7) feature story Transmitter Champion retires after nearly 30years “I always wondered why somebody doesn’t do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody.” In the early years of Kadlec Neurological Resource Center, De Martucci saw that someone needed to do something for those who were dealing with loved ones who had dementia. In the mid-eighties, and as a result of her mother-in-law’s dementia, De joined forces with Craig and Nina Liebler on the Alzheimer’s support group they were doing at The Neurological Center (TNC). Almost thirty years later, and with well over three thousand volunteer hours invested, De has remained a supporter and advocate of KNRC. She has long been sought after for her expertise in dementia and has developed the reputation of being the “go-to” person for caregivers in our community. Many organizations have benefitted from her presentations on dementia. In her role as support group leader for KNRC’s three caregiver support groups, she has helped hundreds, perhaps thousands, of families cope with the demands of caregiving. -Lily Tomlin Additionally, De served on the Board of Directors for nearly fifteen years (even serving as President and Treasurer) contributing to the growth of KNRC. De remained motivated through the years by realizing that “the organization is not just the ‘nuts and bolts’. The key thing to remember is that everyone who walks through our door really needs our help.” For all those who have been helped, or have learned from De, she really is “somebody”. De is retiring, and on December 10th, KNRC’s Board of Directors and Rand Wortman, CEO of Kadlec Health System, thanked De for her many years of commitment and service to KNRC. She has truly been a key to KNRC’s success and every best wish is offered to her as she walks through a new door in her life. Article written by Heidi Hill. Matthews Natural Therapies For Parkinson’s Disease, Dr. Laurie Mischley High-Carb Diet in Old Age Linked to Mental Decline Elderly who consumed the most carbohydrates, sugar had more memory, thinking problems, study finds Seniors who consume lots of carbohydrates and sugar are at increased risk for mild cognitive impairment, according to a new study. Mild cognitive impairment – which includes problems with memory, language, thinking and judgment – may be an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease. The study included 940 people, aged 70 to 89, who had no cognitive problems at the start of the trial and who provided information about their eating habits. Within four years, 200 of the participants were beginning to show mild cognitive impairment, the researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., said. Those who reported the highest carbohydrate intake were 1.9 times more likely to develop mild cognitive impairment than those with the lowest carbohydrate intake. Those with the highest sugar intake were 1.5 times more likely to develop mild cognitive impairment than those with the lowest intake. Those whose diets had the highest levels of fat and protein were 42 percent and 21 percent less likely, respectively, to develop mild cognitive impairment than those with the lowest intake of fat and protein. “A high carbohydrate intake could be bad for you because carbohydrates impact your glucose and insulin metabolism,” study author and epidemiologist Rosebud Roberts said in a Mayo news release. “Sugar fuels the brain – so moderate intake is good. However, high levels of sugar may actually prevent the brain from using the sugar – similar to what we see with type 2 diabetes,” said Roberts. She noted the findings highlight the importance of a well-balanced diet. “We think it’s important that you eat a healthy balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat, because each of these nutrients has an important role in the body,” Roberts said. While the researchers found an association between sugar-laden, high-carb diets and mental decline, they did not establish a cause-and-effect relationship. Overall, when total fat and protein consumption was considered, the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment was 3.6 times greater for people with the highest carbohydrate intake, according to the study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and funded by the U.S. National Institute on Aging. 04 www.NeurologicalResource.org in the news KADLEC NEUROLOGICAL RESOURCE CENTER JANUARY 2013 05 in the news Transmitter S FOR U N I O J VA R I É T É ve hat impro t s m a r g o rd e r s . port pr g will sup y neurological diso in n e v e e c te d b f ro m t h Proceeds f life for those affe yo the qualit SHIPS R O S N SPO VAILABLE!
