ABMA President Mark Fultz, of Abtex Corporation, Dresden, NY, reported that 222 people attended the 2016 annual convention. This was the strongest attendance over the past 12 years for the convention when it has coincided with an InterBrush year (the Freiburg, Germany trade fair held every four years). Attendees heard three guest speakers, various industry reports and visited ABMA’s President Mark Fultz the annual Suppliers Display and other networking events. This included the pirate-themed Suppliers Reception. The annual ABMA golf outing was also well attended. The guest speakers were Bill Napolitano, who spoke on “Using Assessment Tools To Build A Better, More Aligned Workforce”; Steve McClatchy, who gave a presentation titled “Leading Relationships: Communicate Effectively, Resolve Conflict And Build A Culture Of High Trust”; and John Kennedy, who discussed “Vision, Values and Volition.” Among those at this year’s ABMA Annual Convention were 24 firsttime attendees, which Fultz said is extremely important. “First-time attendees are the lifeblood of any organization. We all want W The 99th ABMA Annual Convention drew 222 attendees. PG 6 to do our part to encourage more people to come and experience what a great organization we have,” Fultz said. “There were also 44 exhibitors at this year’s Suppliers Display. This was the second highest number since 2007.” Much discussion and planning also took place for next year’s 100th ABMA Annual Convention, scheduled for March 22-25, 2017, at the Hyatt Grand Cypress, in Orlando, FL. “Our convention in 2017 promises to be a knockout,” Fultz said. “I have been a member for 23 years. Each convention seems to get better. Next year’s convention should be the best yet. “Our mission is to ensure that everyone who attends the ABMA Annual Convention feels welcome, has fun and finds value for his/her company.” ABMA Welcomes Visitors From Abroad, New Members & First-Time Convention Attendees his year’s Opening Business Session, held March 3, featured representatives from two European brush associations as well as introductions of new ABMA members and first-time convention attendees. FEIBP/European Brushware Federation representative Philip Coward, of Hill Brush Inc., Mere, Wiltshire, United Kingdom, invited everyone to attend the FEIBP Brush Conference. This year the annual event is scheduled for September 7, 8 and 9 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Visit www.congress.eurobrush.com for more information. The event was recommended by ABMA President Mark Fultz prior to Coward’s address. “I had the opportunity to visit my first FEIBP meeting last September. Over the years, I have heard what a great organization it is, and how welcoming their members are, and I found this to be absolutely true,” Fultz said. Not pictured is Vice Chair Jill Shinners, of Pioneer Packaging. business climate in Europe, one that has experienced various challenges over the past several years. “The European Union (EU) has had a number of serious matters to deal with in the past year. There have been continuing (economic) problems in Greece as well as the unprecedented migration of refugees into Europe,” Coward said. “There is also the June referendum for voters in the United Kingdom, which will ask whether or not the UK should stay in the EU. This is a concern from a business point of view as it brings uncertainty. We will see what happens. The EU, as a whole, has seen little growth over the past 12 months.” He added that unemployment rates in such European countries as Spain and Greece remain high. “We are living in unpredictable times,” Coward added. Daniel Strowitzki, representing Messe Freiburg/InterBrush, reminded ABMA members that the upcoming InterBrush trade fair is scheduled for April 27-29, 2016, in Freiburg, Germany. This global specialized trade fair — held once every four years — features machinery, materials and accessory equipment for the broom, brush, paint roller and mop industries. “It’s a sold out show for exhibitors. Kevin Monahan Kristin Draper BBM MAGAZINE | March/April 2016 Bruce Gale Scott Enchelmaier New this year will be a kickoff event to InterBrush, taking place in downtown Freiburg on Tuesday, April 26, according to Strowitzki. “Included in this event will be an exhibition featuring 150 years of brush making,” he said. Several new ABMA active (manufacturer) and affiliate (supplier) member companies were also recognized during the Opening Business Session. Representatives who were in attendance at the Opening Business Session spoke about their individual companies. They included: • Steve Bernier, of Les Brosses Lacasse, St-Alphonse, QC, who explained “brosses” is a French word for “brushes.” The company refurbishes, designs and manufactures various types of products, including industrial brushes; • Donald Dray, of Fiberglass Innovations, Rockford, IL, who stated: “We make a variety of fiberglass products, ranging from simple rods to fairly complex profiles. This includes items featuring a variety of chemistries, depending on specific product use, tensile strength, etc.” Dray added that the company has been in business for 30-plus years; • P.G. New Logo For ABMA; Scholarship Announced; And Anniversary Documentary Update ark Fultz unveiled a new look for ABMA during the Opening Business Session — an updated logo that he said has been designed to usher the association into its next century of leadership. M PG 10 A highlight of the ABMA Annual Convention is the Suppliers Display program. This year’s event featured 44 exhibitors. “It’s a great time to look toward the future, especially in light of the upcoming InterBrush exhibition in April, and the 100th ABMA celebration in 2017,” Fultz said. “The ABMA Board of Directors has been discussing the possibility of updating our logo for some time. It was not an easy decision. Certainly, there is a lot of historical significance with the previous logo. “However, there were also a couple of drawbacks that we often noticed over the years. If you Google ABMA, our association rarely comes up on top. Typically, we find that there is the American Boiler Manufacturers Association, the Animal Behavior Management Alliance — which uses a logo similar to our previous one — and the American Bearing Manufacturers Association. Therefore, in anticipation of our 100th anniversary, we updated the logo and it will be featured at InterBrush. Fultz added that the ABMA Foundation is a catalyst for uniting people and organizations, making a difference through better education and opportunity. “We secure contributions and provide grants for sustainable programs in research, education and assistance for our industry associates and their families in need,” Fultz said. “(The Foundation’s) strategic ties with ABMA, coupled with its strong volunteer leadership and generous donors, give it a powerful yet flexible infrastructure to anticipate and quickly respond to the needs affecting our industry, and the welfare of its associates.” Fultz added that application forms for future scholarships can be found at the ABMA website. “We also certainly welcome tax deductible contributions to the ABMA Foundation. It’s very gratifying to know that as we approach our 100th anniversary as an association, we are in a very strong position to give back to our industry, member associates and their families,” Fultz said. Another major topic at this year’s Opening Business Session was next year’s 100th ABMA 5 SECONDS anniversary celebration. Part of this event will be the LATER release of a documentary film titled, “The Brush Industry: A Manufacturing Love Story,” produced by Robin Christian Peters, of Dreamscape Design. “We have been working for several years on this BEFORE AFTER (documentary), trying to capture the essence of our industry and organization. It’s definitely something you are not going to want to miss. Next year’s convention would present a good opportunity to bring more people from your organization to this event. This gives your employees the opportunity to achieve a little bit of fame,” Fultz said. “We think this is going to come together very nicely.” Another highlight to next year’s celebration will be the creation of an artistic piece made entirely of brushes and related parts. “We need donations such as spare brushes, rollers, squeegee parts, etc., — anything you have to help us. These parts don’t have to be perfect. Seconds are welcomed,” Bruce Gale said. Also needed for this project are raw materials in as many colors and textures as possible. “An artist will take these items and incorporate them into an artistic piece,” Gale said. “Donations should be sent to David Parr.” PG 14 Fultz added: “We are very greatful with the amount of overall contributions that have been made thus far, and the amount of support that we have gained, for this epic event that will take place next year. Committee Reports Highlight Closing Business Session arious ABMA committee reports were presented during this year’s Closing Business Session, held on March 5. This included the ABMA Finance Committee report, presented by the committee’s Chair and ABMA Treasurer Scott Enchelmaier. He reported 2015 was a very strong year for the association. Due to its current solid financial V BBM MAGAZINE | March/April 2016 health, the ABMA Board of Directors voted to keep member and supplier dues for 2016 at the same level as the previous year. ABMA Convention Committee Chair Carlos Petzold discussed the locations and dates of the next four ABMA Annual Conventions. They are: March 22-25, 2017, at the Hyatt Grand Cypress, Orlando, FL; March 21-24, 2018, at the Westin Kierland, Scottsdale, AZ; March 20-23, 2019, at Paradise Island, The Bahamas; and, March 4-7, 2020, at the Renaissance Vinoy, St. Petersburg, FL. ABMA Public Relations Committee Chair Greg Miller reported that most of the association’s public relations activities are currently being directed toward the 100th anniversary celebration. “We will have an outstanding venue in Orlando next year. Our committee continues to meet, and we are getting closer to finalizing details for this event and program,” Miller said. “Please be on the lookout for more information regarding the 100th anniversary celebration. It’s an important award that showcases innovation and technology which drives our industry,” Petzold said. “Many companies involved with ABMA are developing new products and innovations every year. The award’s rules are listed on the ABMA website.” ABMA Safety & Standards Committee Chair Scott Enchelmaier reported on updates involving ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and ASTM compliance issues. He also stated that the safety slip program remains available for power brush manufacturers. New icondriven safety slips include a manufacturer’s mark that has to be submitted to the committee for identification purposes. Enchelmaier spoke as well of the ABMA Expert Witness Program, which remains available to any member company that becomes involved in litigation. ABMA Statistical Committee Chair Jill Shinners was unable to attend this year’s Closing Business Session. Therefore, David Parr presented her report, urging association members to participate in the upcoming ABMA Wage Survey, which will take place later this year. “It’s a very important and useful benchmarking survey. A lot of companies use this survey to help evaluate their wage and benefits structure,” Parr said. “The survey is designed by our members. Steps are taken to make sure it remains current and features useful information.” It was also noted during the Closing Business Session that Kevin Monahan, of Monahan Partners, Arcola, IL, presented a report at the ABMA Broom & Mop Division Meeting, on March 2, discussing last year’s National Broom, Mop & Brush Meeting. This event is held each fall in St. Louis. Monahan is the current co-chairman of the meeting. “We had a great time last fall, and plan to hold the next event on Nov. 17-18 in St. Louis,” Monahan said. “It’s a very efficient and affordable meeting, featuring guest speakers, industry reports and networking opportunities. Last year we saw a three-year high in attendance, and hope to have an even better turnout for this year.” PG 16 In other action during the Closing Business Session, the following ABMA bylaw changes were approved by attending membership. They are: • Restore voting privileges for the Past President; • Removal of references to the Management Liaison, as there has been no Management Liaison position since 2002; • Reduce the number of directors from 18 to 17, due to the removal of the Management Liaison position; • Elect six directors from the Active Membership and six directors from the Affiliate/Supplier Membership, without the divisional restrictions of the past; and, • Create four-year terms for all directors not serving on the Executive Board. “The ABMA Board of Directors felt the need to modify these bylaws to further streamline ABMA and our convention process. The goal has been to make (the Association) more efficient,” Fultz said. “As board members, our focus is to provide as much value as possible to membership, and have the convention run as smoothly as possible.” Looking Ahead With Excitement oon after the Closing Business Session of the 99th ABMA Annual Convention came to an end, thoughts quickly turned to next year’s big 100th celebration as well as what the future holds for the brush and related industries. “We view the 100th anniversary not so much as a platform to look backward, but also as a launching pad to look forward,” Parr said, after this year’s Annual Meeting. “We want to celebrate our industry today — its current competitiveness and how well poised it is to compete in the future. InterBrush provides a good opportunity to take a look at the coming Wöhler Brush Tech highlights. It’s already been four years since representatives of the worldwide brush industry last came together in Freiburg to present both innovative products and the latest technology. Many are already eagerly awaiting the highlights of the 2016 fair. The focus of interest among the industrial brush producers will be mainly on the increased efficiency and quality of machines and new products. Highlights From The World Of Strip Brush Machines Wöhler Brush Tech – that’s the world of brushmaking machines. This world consists of various areas of brush types. Held every four years in Freiburg, InterBrush 2016 will again take place at the exhibition and conference center known as Messe Freiburg. This modern complex combines more than four decades of event knowledge and experience with charm and state-of-the-art technology. According to organizers, InterBrush offers attendees the opportunity to become better acquainted with important trends and the latest innovations found in the brush machinery and related industries. In addition, InterBrush visitors will have the chance to speak face-to-face with many experts and decision-makers from all over the world. Approximately 200 exhibitors from 30 countries will be presenting raw materials, semi-finished products and machinery across an exhibition area of 21,500 m2 during InterBrush 2016. Some 7,000 attendees, from more than 85 countries, are expected for this event. Exhibition space for InterBrush 2016 is sold out. According to the trade fair’s officials, 98 percent of exhibitors from InterBrush 2012 had announced four years ago that they would be back for the next event, while 87 percent of visitors were sure they would also return in 2016. As of February 2016, all exhibition halls were fully booked, all market leaders and major producers were registered and hotel enquiries for the trade fair date were high. Among the expected attendees and exhibitors at InterBrush 2016 will be many representatives and companies from North America. In fact, the American Brush Manufacturers Association (ABMA) is a supporting contributor and limited financial partner to the event, and values the contribution InterBrush makes to the worldwide brush industry, according to ABMA Executive Director David Parr. “We promote InterBrush to our members, and the industry as a whole, and will have an exhibition stand at the event, just as in past years,” Parr said. “The greatest value of InterBrush is the ability to actually shop brush machinery. That is, to go from one machine to another to investigate the specific differences between filling tools, cutters, robots and related components. “In addition, it’s easy at InterBrush to source and shop raw materials and ancillary products and services, since there are so many vendors at the event.” According to InterBrush officials, many associations and manufacturers have observed that companies in the brush, mop, roller and broom industries tend to postpone replacement investments until the next InterBrush, where they can find out about new state-of-the-art technologies and predict which types of machines their industries will likely use in the years to come. InterBrush becomes a showcase every four years for the latest developments, including prototypes, that provide a glimpse into the future. Broom, Brush & Mop Magazine recently talked with representatives of two U.S. toothbrush companies to learn more about the state of this important industry, and what trends are driving the market. T ince the 1980s, officials at RADIUS, of Kutztown, PA, have been designing and manufacturing toothbrushes and other personal care items that look different for a reason. They are produced with ergonomics and better health in mind. “We focus on evolving the objects used in daily life that can make life easier and add joy to mundane tasks, while still being sensitive to our impact on the environment,” RADIUS CEO Saskia Foley said. “Our products are made using low-energy machines in a woman-owned, solarpowered facility in Pennsylvania. This sustainable manufacturing process allows us to reduce waste. What little waste RADIUS does create is recycled and reused to make new products. Each product is inspected by hand and designed to last. “We offer toothbrushes for adults and children that are manufactured with premium vegetable-based bristles. These products are ergonomically designed to provide the best brushing experience possible.” Looking to reinvent something that had not been changed much for a long time, architects Kevin Foley and James O’Halloran invented a new kind of toothbrush over 30 years ago. It looked different compared to the conventional small-headed, hard-bristled toothbrushes of the day. What they developed was the RADIUS Original Toothbrush. It featured a large handle and came in both right- and left-handed versions. Also, the product included very fine filaments placed on a large oval head. By 1988, RADIUS also introduced another toothbrush design called the SCUBA. It looked similar to the Orignal, but featured a flexible, rubber handle. The purpose of the non-slip, flexible rubber material was to help the user avoid applying too much pressure on the brush head. The Original and the SCUBA are still available today from RADIUS, along with other toothbrush products, including those designed for children. Also available are complementary items such as travel cases and dental floss. Today, Kevin Foley’s daughter, Saskia Foley, heads the business. RADIUS manufactures products from a 20,000-square-foot solarpowered restored feed mill. The facility dates to the early 1800s in Kutztown, located in Pennsylvania Amish country. “We’ve grown approximately 50 percent over the past four years, and our growth continues,” Saskia Foley said. “We’ve experienced tremendous growth internationally. Approximately 20 percent of our sales stem from our export channel. We’re extremely proud to have won the 2015 Governor’s ImPAct Award for Export in southeast Pennsylvania. “We’re continuing to develop innovative designs and strive to introduce one to two new products per year. Products made in the United States are becoming more popular, while the natural product industry has also grown tremendously over the years.” Since most of the company’s products are made at its Kutztown facility, Saskia Foley said it’s imperative the company continue to focus on greater automation in the manufacturing process. “Products made in America, especially high-end items like ours, are typically more expensive to manufacture. We always strive to reduce expenses and keep our costs as low as possible, so we can continue to manufacture and operate in the United States,” she said. “RADIUS offers premium, niche-related products that are well merchandised. This remains our major focus.” New product introductions for the company include the RADIUS TOUR Travel Toothbrush, featuring a 2-in-1 toothbrush and travel case. “We’re planning on 2016 being a big year for RADIUS. This includes a building expansion as well as branching into another category — toothpaste. Today, Eric Cope heads Smile Squared, a St. Louis, MObased business that sells two types of toothbrushes to North American customers. For every one of its toothbrushes sold, the company donates a toothbrush to an undervprivileged person. It’s the goal of Smile Squared to not only remain a for-profit company, but help a large domestic and international population who simply cannot afford, or have access to, a toothbrush. “People ask me if we are Eric Cope a not-for-profit business. I tell them ‘no,’ one of our goals is to make a profit,” Eric Cope said. “We didn’t want to just beg and borrow for toothbrushes because there is a need. I believe in free enterprise, and the best way to create something sustainable is to follow a solid business plan and provide great products. “Our cornerstone as a business is to remain a giving organization, but we still have to make money. I do consider ‘giving’ as our primary value.” Smile Squared supplies two types of toothbrushes. Its original item features a bamboo handle and comes in child and adult sizes. This product is produced in China. The company’s other line of toothbrushes is called the Colorful Collection. These are plastic-handle adult toothbrushes that feature different color options. They are made by a toothbrush manufacturing company located in the United States. “When we started Smile Squared, we wanted something unique and interesting, which led our company to the bamboo-handle toothbrush. Sales have been very good. A lot of people like using natural products such as bamboo. We want to provide products that are good for both people and the earth,” Eric Cope said. “We have found success selling our products over the Internet. She is a financial adviser, and Smile Squared certainly has her DNA all over it as well,” Eric Cope said. “She has been instrumental by providing key strategic initiatives, vision and business strategies. “Our company also has a new business partner, and we are looking at different initiatives for 2016. He has significant experience in bringing new products to market. We are exploring how Smile Squared can grow sales in the future, and create a stronger partnership with all customers.” Although Eric Cope has long considered himself an entrepreneur and has been involved with different businesses throughout his working life, it wasn’t until he and his wife took a mission trip to Guatemala that the couple fully realized not everybody can afford, or have easy access to, something as simple as a toothbrush. “All four of our children are internationally adopted. Our oldest son is from Guatemala. My wife and I fell in love with the country years ago when we picked up our son. Later, we had an opportunity to participate in a mission trip in the country, during which I volunteered at a dental clinic,” Cope said. “I helped teach children at the clinic how they should properly brush their teeth. I soon learned that many of these children didn’t have a toothbrush at home, or had to share a single toothbrush with their entire family. This, of course, can result in tooth decay. It’s a serious health issue that continues to take place not only around the world, but in the United States as well.” Soon, Eric and Geri Cope were looking for ways to help, which eventually led to the creation of Smile Squared. The company officially began in November 2011. Since then, it has been featured in such publications as O, The Oprah Magazine as well as on NBC’s The Today Show. Eric Cope said the business philosophy surrounding Smile Squared remains simple: “When a customer buys one of our toothbrushes, we donate a toothbrush to a person in need. We have established several relationships with non-profit organizations that help us distribute the donated toothbrushes. These toothbrushes have been sent to communities located in all 50 states as well as 26 countries around the world. “We have a person who helps us with product fulfillment, and we also use interns when it comes to our daily operations. I believe in running a lean company.” Eric Cope said he is excited about the future of Smile Squared heading into the remainder of 2016 and beyond. “We are looking to expand how we give, and I am always seeking new products that make the most sense for our business. Acquires Carolina Filaments American Select Tubing has announced the acquisition of Carolina Filaments, LLC, effective February 29, 2016. Operating as AST Filaments, the company markets, stocks and distributes filaments for Filkemp (Portugal), Plasticfibre (Italy), and other potential partners to customers in North America and Mexico. “Brian Crawford, founder and owner of Carolina Filaments, remains with AST Filaments to ensure a smooth transition for both customers and suppliers,” said AST. With over 30 years of experience in the brush and filament industry, Crawford works closely with Dustin Maninfior, who is sales manager of AST Filaments, and Jennifer Wright, who has customer service responsibilities for the new venture. Filkemp is a producer of abrasive filaments, and is located near Lisbon, Portugal. ISO certified, Filkemp products using nylon resins in conjunction with silica carbide, aluminum oxide, ceramic, and diamond aggregates provide engineered solutions for industrial, floor care, stone polishing, automotive, and other markets. Plasticfibre, located in Bologna, Italy, is a manufacturer of synthetic filaments including PP, PS, SAN, PVC, polyester, and nylon. Also ISO 9000 certified, Plasticfibre filaments have application in the food service, agricultural, industrial, automotive, as well as janitorial and sanitary supply markets. “The mission at AST filaments will be to continue to offer filament and brush making solutions through the same levels of service, product quality and competitiveness that customers have come to expect from Carolina Filaments. Current plans are to distribute filament products from a 186,000-square-foot location in Mattoon, IL,” according to AST.
