has November 13-14 on their personal calendars to be there ready to
work to make this another successful event for the Cruisers. Read

THE SEPTEMBER SOCIAL
We met at Murphy’s Steakhouse on September 16. Murphy’s has such a diverse menu that there is always something
for everyone. Service was great, food was tasty, and as always the conversations were lively.
We will be meeting at Cedar’s Mediterranean on Wednesday, October 21. Please RSVP to Pat when the email with
details gets to you. We want good service and to do that Pat must be able to give the restaurant as accurate a
headcount as possible so that they are ready for us. Thanks!
A DAY AT HEB PLUS
The Bastrop Area Cruisers had another very successful community car display at HEB Plus on the morning of
Saturday, September 19. We were approached by HEB employee, Chris Calderon, to help them out for a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. As usually is the case, and even with relatively short notice, over 15
BAC families and individuals came out to support the cause and show their super looking vehicles after president
Bill Whittaker sent out the request. HEB supplied drinks and hot dogs although most of us paid for them to help
support the cause. It was well organized as they had a large area for their parking lot roped off when we arrived.
We got the following nice email from Chris thanking us for our small, but impressive, car show.
“Let me start out by saying what a great turnout and everyone had fun. HEB loved every single car that was out there.
From everyone here at HEB Plus we want to say thank you and we hope we can do it again. From your friendly HEB Plus
family and from me. Chris Calderon”
Chris later reported that they raised over $200 for the American Heart Association.
In addition to the display, Chris said it was OK to sell our car show raffle tickets, and with great leadership from
Patricia Shelly, our “Raffle Ticket Queen”, 169 of them were sold. Doing the HEB Plus display was especially timely
and satisfying as they have already committed to a $300 sponsorship for our Veteran’s Weekend Car Show prior to
their request. Just as in past displays such as B&B Auto, Shulman Lost Pines 8, Prosperity Bank, and many of the
Hyatt events, our BAC members came through and also had a great time showing off their cars and helping the
community. There were quite a few spectators, several of which had classic cars and plan to join the club.
IMPORTANT MECUM AUCTION INFORMATION
If you missed the September BAC meeting, information was presented on our club again being involved in the
second Mecum Auction in Austin at the Austin Convention Center on Friday and Saturday, December 11 and 12.
Last year, our first, we had a total of 66 club member volunteers to work the auction; 44 on Friday and 42 on
Saturday. We all had a good time and earned approximately $4,300 as a donation from Mecum.
In order to have better efficiency, longer breaks/lunches we propose/request at least 55 volunteers for each day
for the 2015 auction. Signup sheets were passed around at the September meeting. If you were not there and
would like to participate, please contact Bill Szelag or Gene Waldrip to notify us of the following:
1. Which day or day you can work—Friday, Saturday, or both.
2. If you want to drive or tug vehicles with a golf cart or both. If driving, can you drive a stick shift, or prefer
other duty such as the HQ room coordination.
3. Your shirt size and cell phone number.
Other decisions made regarding this year’s auction are as follows:
1. Volunteers are limited to BAC members and immediate family members only—sons, daughters, spouse.
2. This year it was also decided that the club will pay for the food in the HQ room. The food will be similar as
last year since we now know more about the logistics and costs of the venue. People can bring desserts,
snacks, fruit if they choose, but that is voluntary.
So, the club is in and we look forward to this great opportunity again. It will certainly be a fun time and you may
even be on TV as Mecum Auctions are often televised for the prime times. Mecum provides Mecum shirts so that
everyone looks the part for the TV show—Mecum Driver hats and official Mecum Driver badges for those
participating.
The Mecum team was very happy with how we did last year, so that is how we are doing it again! They appreciate
club members because they are car people and understand and respect the cars that they are auctioning.

BAC AT THE KOLACHE FESTIVAL—CALDWELL
Some of our BAC members ventured to the Caldwell Kolache Festival, Saturday, September 12. Bill Szelag, Roland
Damari, Bob Martin, and Jim and Judy Kennedy attended with three vehicles in the show. The setting was in
Davidson Creek Park, a similar setting as our Smithville show used to be with plenty of shade trees, although we
were in the sun.
Over 130 vehicles were in the show and you can guanrantee that everyone, plus some spectators got flyers on our
Veterans show. The interest seemed high from those who have both been and those who have not been to the
Bastrop show. They also seemed to be interested in the Friday Cruise-in and liked the Veteran’s ceremony plans.
Although each of the BAC cars entered seemed to be some of the best there with Bob’s red truck, Jim and Judy’s
super ‘57 Chevy wagon, and Bill’s Olds 442 W30, we were not selected for any awards as it was a participant
judged show and not judged by class as they did not even have any classifications for entries. In any case, it was a
pretty nice show with friendly people, nice setting, and it ended early as awards were presented at 1:30 p.m.
It was well worth the 50 minute or so drive just to promote our show although we did not eat even one kolache.
All you BAC members, please be sure to attend other local shows and get some flyers to pass out when attending!

COLONY CAR SHOW BENEFITTING
BASTROP ANIMAL SHELTER
There are many residents of The Colony community in Bastrop that have classic or special interest cars, so
several years ago a few residents thought it would be a good idea to have a Colony Car Show and Community Get
Together. The residents organizing the show are also members of the Bastrop Area Cruisers. The car show has
been held for four years with the most recent on Sunday, September 20.
The event has traditionally been a fundraiser and this year proceeds were to benefit the Bastrop County Animal
Shelter in conjunction with the Friends of the Bastrop County Animal Shelter. On hand were 30 classic and special
interest cars, and three dogs from the shelter looking for new homes.
Great hot dogs—with or without chili—chips, and soft drinks were prepared and served by Bill and Claudia Heslep
and Bruce Mungiguerra, and super music and trivia provided by DJ Trey Heslep. Friends of the Animal Shelter were
there including Sara Axton to answer questions and to show off the dogs. Many generous residents made donations of cash, food, blankets, and other pet supplies.
Car show awards were presented by Bill Szelag. There were some nice prizes acquired by Peggy Colbert, Colony
resident, and Beverly Malke, Colony HOA property manager. A 50-50 raffle was held and the winners generously
donated their $85 winnings back to the Friends.
We are happy to say that on Thursday, September 24, several of the event organizers presented a check for $500
to Marsha Poppy from Friends of the Bastrop County Animal Shelter, and Erica Thompson, Director. Another
$200 was donated directly at the event for a total of $700, plus the pet food and supplies.
What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than to have fun, meet and get to know your neighbors, see some
very nice cars and raise funds for a very important service to our community.

Steve Dewire sent along this picture of a Mini Cooper parked in the hotel’s garage. If I remember correctly Steve had quite the fun awhile back
testing one out on the Hyatt’s winding road when the Lost Pines Hyatt hosted a Mini Cooper display. And better than a National
Geographic photo he included this great scene of Tokyo at night.
BAC MEMBERS AT THE FOUNDRY
Some BAC members found themselves at Deep In The Heart Art Foundry on Saturday, September 19. It looked like
an impromptu club meeting so we decided to get together and take this group shot. The foundry is quite interesting
and to see all the steps involved and to see how the pour is done gives greater appreciation for the beautiful pieces
that are turned out there.

MEETING DATES: The show date is fast approaching. There will be only three more meetings—please make
note of the dates:
Monday, October 12, Monday, October 26, and the final meeting, Monday, November 9. All meetings will be at La
Cabana at 6:00.
RAFFLE TICKETS have been selling well, so well in fact that 1000 more have been ordered. If you still have the
money you received from selling your share of the tickets, please turn in to Patricia Shelly at the October meeting. It
is important that she receive your money before the show. There will be plenty of tickets sold at the show and Pat
would like to have club money accounted for now. Thank you!

NEW MEMBERS
We had returning members join the Cruisers in September. Please welcome Mike and Deanna Blake. The Blakes

Brannon. Tony said they don’t have a car yet, but they are working on it. Welcome to all.

BAC CARS NEEDED IN THE COMMUNITY
Saturday, October 3— As they did last year, Home Depot would like several of the BAC vehicles on their lot from
10-2 for their Fire Safety Program. If you can spare a few hours on Saturday, please drop by the Home Depot lot.
Sunday, October 4—Dixie’s Antiques is opening a new location next to Kay’s Café on Hwy 71. They have requested
3-5 vehicles on their lot from 12-3. If you can help out, drop by Dixie’s and see their new location.

with the F1 Watch Party Race Events hosted by Zinger Hardware, multiple dining options, additional parking, shopping and club
