LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
Dear Members,
The cover of this month’s PAPOOSE is a very special one- it is a photo of Ukranian Easter eggs,
or pysanky. The collection comes from one of our Members, Kelly J. Evans. Some of you may
remember Kelly’s eggs from his house that was on the LMCC House Tour several years ago.
The décor on the eggs often featured the sun, as it warmed the eatch and was a source of life. Eggs
decorated with nature symbols were a symbol of rebirth and spring. The process of wax resist takes
time and patience, but the results are incredible. Because the inside of the egg is blown out with a
pin hole, the eggs can be preserved and cherished for years.
Kelly has hundreds of these eggs in his home as he continues this springtime tradition that he
started with his mother many years ago.
As March rolls in, there are many spring traditions that we celebrate here at LMCC: Easter being
one of them. An early Easter allows us all to think about (hopefully) an early spring and more
days of longer daylight! Mark your calendar for many of the events that will take place here this
spring: Easter Brunch & Sunrise Mass service, the Moroccan Madness Dinner and Tasting On the
Boardwalk (May 15)… All of these events are opportunities to spend time with your family and
friends and continue to build community spirit within Lake Mohawk.
When not celebrating a special day, start a new tradition: come visit the new Papoose Members
Lounge, which is open! We are open in the business center and in the lounge. This space and
place is a wonderful way to meet an old friend or make a new one. Many thanks to all those who
contributed to this project as it re-focuses our attention on bringing value driven amenities to our
members within the Clubhouse. A dedicated sign is prominently displayed in the Lounge area
depicting all those who made contributions in time, resources and products to make this room a
truly special place.
While you are here at the Clubhouse please stop upstairs to see the renovations that have taken
place in the Grand Ballroom. As all recent renovations that have occurred in the Clubhouse the
past few years we have updated several areas but have still managed to maintain the lake-style
charm and ambience. I wish to personally thank the Capital Improvement Committee under the
guidance of Chairperson Greg Leo for your continued support to the long-term vision in this
process. This room is a critical part of our overall strategic plan and that is to generate money
from non-members to reduce the burden on Membership for future capital expenditures and
anticipated upgrades to the Lake Mohawk reservation. The room has re-opened and I encourage
you to book your upcoming event – whether it be for a small private event or one on a grandeur
scale – make Lake Mohawk your 1st Choice as you begin the planning for this. For more

In closing – we have a great deal to look forward to in 2016. Many projects that have been deferred
throughout the reservation continue to be scheduled and completed. Preventative maintenance and
internal processes are being implemented on many levels that will allow us to preserve and protect
your investment – in your personal home and the life-style amenities within Lake Mohawk. On
behalf of our Staff – we thank you for the incredible opportunities provided to us every day to serve
our Membership. We look forward to a wonderful spring season as I hope you are as well.

AESTHETICS COMMITTEE OUTLINES
EXPECTATIONS
A
great looking neighborhood enhances the value of each and every home.
Property maintenance requires work, and often calls for all members to
come together to achieve the common goal of an attractive community.
WHAT DOES THE AESTHETICS COMMITTEE DO?
The Aesthetics Committee ensures that properties and conditions
throughout community are in compliance with the rules and regulations
set forth in the LMCC Club Plan Agreement and the General Ordinances
of Sparta Township. The Committee tours the Reservation on a regular
basis to report on properties and homes that are in need of attention.
They also monitor the progress of the repairs and the ultimate remedy of
the situation with the Club and/or the Township of Sparta.
Individual Members may also report situations on the club website or to
the Aesthetics Committee.
The LMCC Club Plan is signed by each Member when they purchase their property and pay their
Registration Fees. The expectation is that all Members will respect the agreement. Details are found on the
MEMBERS WEBSITE and also available in the office. Chapter XIV of Property Maintenance for Sparta
Township is found within The General Ordinances of Sparta Township, located on the town website.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CLUB PLAN AGREEMENT INCLUDE:
• No nuisance or anything obnoxious or detrimental to the value of adjoining or adjacent
properties or residences shall be maintained or permitted on any part of the property.
• The owner of any property shall be responsible for the sanitary disposal of all sewage,
garbage and rubbish.
• No disabled vehicles, garbage or rubbish may be stored on or disposed of on any of the lots
subject to this Agreement.
• Commercial vehicles may not be parked on the roads of the Reservation, unless in use for a
particular job on a temporary basis.
• Car tents are not permitted. No sign, “For Sale” or “For Rent” or other advertisement
soliciting a purchaser or a tenant shall be placed or displayed on the property.
• Any above ground pools and all boats and trailers must be erected or stored in the side yard or
rear yard and adequately shielded so as not to be observed from the street or adjacent properties.
• No cyclone fences or other similar open mesh wire fences shall be installed on any
residential properties, except with written permission of the Board of Trustees or their
designated representatives.

The Sparta Town Ordinances includes cover
additional issues of maintenance and upkeep.
These affirm the expectation of every resident is
responsible for their property. Ordinance 14-8.1
states that the exterior of the premises shall be
maintained by the owner or operator so that the
appearance will reflect a level of maintenance in
keeping with the standards of the neighborhood.
The town ordinance also states that landscaping
which is in public view must be kept in an orderly
state, with lawns and bushes “trimmed and free
from becoming overgrown”.
The Sparta Township also outlines that ALL
building should be kept in good repair, painted
where required or treated in such a way to prevent
deterioration. All buildings or structures cannot
create a safety hazard or nuisance.
NOTIFICATION OF NONCOMPLIANCE
When properties are not in compliance with the
Club Plan Agreement or Sparta Ordinances, Lake
Mohawk Country Club will issue a letter to the
member describing the condition that needs to
be remedied. Any member receiving such a letter
should bring their property into compliance and
notify the office immediately.
LETTERS SENT TO HOMEOWNERS
If a Member receives a letter, it is his/her
responsibility to remedy the problem quickly or
contact the Club and explain how you plan to
bring the property into compliance. If there are
questions or a disagreement with the description,
the Club or Committee should be contacted
immediately. There are workable solutions
available. Neighbors are often available to help
out a Club Member that is not able to do what is
needed. The goal of the committee is to improve
the appearance of our community. Sometime we
all need a gentle reminder.

The protocol of the Club Plan Agreement,
Section Four states:
If any member, after written notice, fails to abate
a condition, which in the opinion of the Club,
constitutes a violation of this section, the Club
shall have the right, in addition to all other rights,
to seek injunctive relief to abate such violation(s)
and, if such relief is granted, shall be entitled to
reimbursement from the offending member for
all costs to abate such violation(s), including legal
costs and reasonable attorney fees.

SUMMER DAY CAMP
COMES TO LAKE MOHAWK POOL
A
new summer day camp will open up this
summer at the Lake Mohawk Pool, in
conjunction with the Hilltop Country Day
School. Named Camp Apogee, this day camp will
offer a blend of traditional camp activities as well
as a blend of S.T.E.A.M enrichment activities.
Campers age 6-13 will experience integrated
science, technology, engineering, art and math
instruction as well as outdoor sports and games.
Of course, swimming and pool activities will be a
big part of the program as well.
“I want children in Sussex County to have the
kind of fun during the summer that I did as
a kid,” says Greg Leo, a principle in the Lake
Mohawk Pool located in Byram Township. “Kids
should be outside and enjoy the best that summer
has to offer,” continues Leo.
Hilltop Country Day School has focused on
S.T.E.A.M. skills since 1967. The camp will
run from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with before and
after care available. Snacks and lunch are part
of the program. Chaperoned transportation
from Hilltop to the Pool is included. For more

LAKE MOHAWK GOLF CLUB:
GETTING
AHEAD OF THE GAME

S
ince its founding, the Lake Mohawk Golf Club, a
private, member-owned club, has been a bastion
of solitude amidst the rolling hills surrounding the
beautiful and picturesque Lake Mohawk. Today,
golfers enjoy spectacular scenery throughout the
majestic 126 acre golf course, built in 1928 shortly
after the dam that created Lake Mohawk was
constructed. Lake Mohawk Golf Club (LMGC)
is today, as it has been throughout its history, an
integral part of the Lake Mohawk Community,
and while evolving over the years, much like the
community has evolved, it continues to provide a
respite from everyday life for its members.
LMGC is proud of its long-standing presence
in the Lake Mohawk Community. To this end,
LMGC wants to do more, to offer more to the
community, but to do has recognized that change
is necessary. The image of being a stodgy, stuffy,
private golf club...images of what typically come to
mind when thinking of a private golf club, must
change. To do this we must align what we offer
with what families and individuals are looking
for when considering their recreational and
entertainment choices. In short, we must become
more relevant and “new school” so that we are an
attractive option for members of all ages, singles,
and families with women and children. Changing
our image, introducing new alternatives, getting
ahead of the game, is not easy, but we know it is
essential for our future and for the enjoyment of
our members, both current and new.
With that in mind, the club has made significant
changes to their membership structure geared toward
retaining current and attracting new members,
including adding or modifying membership classes,
changing the membership pricing model, and
updating the dining and events we offer. LMGC
is not just a haven for the retired, it is a vibrant
and happening place for its members to enjoy
and celebrate and it has become home to a new
generation of younger members and their families.
In addition to our new membership structure,
LMGC now offers numerous dining and themed
social events throughout the year as well as
recreational activities for all ages, including events
specifically for families, women, and children.
For the avid golfer there are many competitive
golf tournaments and for the recreational / casual
golfer we have beginners and non-competitive
golf events, for the golfing family we have Nine &
Dine and Family Golf Night and for the Women,
the Women’s Association has a full calendar of
Golf and Social Activities. The LMGC Event
Calendar has social events for everyone including
the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Brunch, Summer
Social Clambake, Fall Family Oktoberfest, and
Breakfast with Santa, to name a few. While golf
is at the center of our activities and is the pride of
LMGC's members, it is these special events that
keep our members happy, engaged, and connected
with each other.
Lastly, and perhaps most important, we needed to
fix the cost model. LMGC understands the concern
our members and potential members have regarding
the cost of club membership. WE GET IT! To
make club membership at LMGC affordable, we
just approved an adjustment to the dues structure
for 2016. The new dues structure does two things:
first, it significantly reduces the cost of membership,
and second, it creates the potential for LMGC to
become a major player among private golf clubs in
Sussex and Morris County. We believe this is a step
in the right direction to having LMGC resume its
rightful place in the Lake Mohawk Community as
the place to go for fun, food, and recreation. Our
highly trained professional staff will be leading Lake
Mohawk Golf Club into a new and exciting future
of growth and prosperity. Come, check us out, by

BWC RECIPE
CROCKPOT BEEF STEW
This hearty dish will be sure to help you shake off any remaining winter chill!
INGREDIENTS:
2lbs. beef stew meat, cut into cubes
2 large carrots, peeled and sliced
3-5 red potatoes, cut into cubes
2 stalks celery, cut into pieces
1 cup beef broth
½ cup red wine
½ cup pearl onions
¼ cup all-purpose flour
1 tbsp. worcestershire sauce
½ tsp. kosher salt
½ tsp. group black pepper
3 cloves garlic, chopped
3 sprigs fresh thyme
1 bay leaf
PROCEDURE:
Toss the meat, salt, pepper and flour together in a mixing bowl, making
sure to coat the beef evenly; place the meat in the slow cooker (along with
any extra flour mixture). Stir all the remaining ingredients into the slow
cooke with the beef. Cover, and cook on the high setting for 4-6 hours. It’s
doesn’t get much easier than this!

FOUNDATION’S MAY 15 DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL
O
nline registration is now open for the Sparta
Education Foundation’s Second Annual
Dragon Boat Festival on Sunday, May 15 at the
Lake Mohawk Country Club. Register now at
spartadragonboat.com where there are additional
details about this fundraiser for Sparta Public
Schools. Participation is limited to fifty teams and
boats will fill up fast. Last year was a sell-out with
record attendance.
This event will run in coordination with the Tasting
on the Boardwalk at Lake Mohawk Country Club.
Restaurants from around the county will sample
their culinary delights from 11-4pm. Tickets will go
on sale in April for this event.
The Dragon Boat Festival a perfect team-building
opportunity for teams of 21 paddlers. All skill
levels can participate. The Races are held in 46foot long boats and teams of 21 compete in 250
meter heats. A team is comprised of 20 paddlers
and one drummer. Each team must include at
least eight females and can include no more than
ten participants between the ages of 15-17. A
steersman is provided by the Dragon Boat Festival
director. Each team will be invited to an on-water
practice session with a trained coach/steersperson
prior to race day and compete in at least two heats
on Sunday, May 15. Prizes will be awarded, but
the real winners will be Sparta’s students.
Truly a unique event, Dragon Boat Race teams
will raise money to help enrich the educational
experience for students in our schools, and it
is a spirited community day and great team
competition. For more information about

The Sparta Education Foundation has awarded
over $600,672 in grants to all five of Sparta’s
public schools since 2006. The Foundation is an

THE LAKE MOHAWK PRESERVATION FOUNDATION…
WORKING OUR VISION!
T
he recently organized all volunteer Foundation completed its inaugural year of operation in December
with a real sense of accomplishment. The Foundation is committed to preserving and improving
Lake Mohawk and the Wallkill River watershed. As a voluntary, tax-exempt charitable organization it is
independent but collaborates closely with LMCC. Some highlights…
VOLUNTEERS WORKING TO PROTECT
THE LAKE…
We engaged some eighty volunteers from the
community in an April Earth Day cleanup of litter
on our roads and other run-off areas that routinely
contaminate the lake -- preventing more than 37
bags of trash and over 7000 cigarette filters from
finding their way into Lake Mohawk and the
Wallkill River watershed. All achieved through
neighborhood and intra-club volunteers supported
by local business sponsors, LMCC, Sparta Township
and the NJ Clean Communities Program.
We are repeating and expanding the initiative this
April with our second Earth Day Acts of Green
Celebration. (See box)
A Demonstration Rain Garden was designed and
installed along the Boardwalk near the dam led by
Eagle Scout candidate Tim Clauss and aided by
fellow scout volunteers from Boy Scout Troup 150.
The Foundation provided guidance and arranged

sponsor support from the Marina and local garden
stores. This is part of our effort to demonstrate the
simplicity and effectiveness of rain gardens, a lake
friendly improvement that residents can create on
their own properties.

PRESERVE OUR LAKE AND LIFESTYLE…
We are working with LMCC and its consultants
to identify near and longer-term research,
demonstration and education projects where
the Foundation could have significant impact
on improving the lake which also serves as the
headwaters of the Wallkill River – the waters that
flow through much of Sparta and Sussex County.
Providing information to help lake residents better
understand lake ecology and how we can all do
our part is basic to our mission. We have reached
out to the lake community and beyond through
the Papoose, and other media and through LMCC
and community events throughout the year.
Progress was celebrated in late November with our
First Annual Lake Preservation Recognition Award
March 2016
honoring the late Fran Smith, who as long time
LMCC General Manager worked tirelessly to restore
Lake Mohawk from its deteriorated condition,
and was an inspiring and visionary co-founder of
the Foundation. Over 140 supporters and a dozen
community groups and business sponsors joined us
to honor Fran’s vision and legacy and highlight our
efforts to advance lake preservation.
All of this has been possible through extensive
volunteer effort and by the generosity of hundreds
of contributors, large and small, individuals,
businesses and foundations who have contributed
to the Foundation and provided in-kind-support,
or partnered with us. Thank you all! Please keep
us in mind – the improvement of our waters and
the preservation of our historic lake community
lifestyle benefit us all.
LOOKING AHEAD…
The Foundation board meets this month to
refine our strategic plan and priorities. We plan
to build on the successful projects and programs
of our inaugural year, and with your volunteer
involvement and financial support we will
redouble our efforts to develop and demonstrate
science based ecology improvements in partnership
with LMCC and the larger community.
We are well underway assembling teams for our
Second Annual Earth Day Clean Up on April
23rd. (See box for to see how you can join us.)
We are encouraging simple residential and intraclub/beach rain garden installations and other lowtech approaches that LMCC members can pursue.
Watch for the dedication of the Boardwalk Rain
Garden this spring and more information on how
you can create your own.
We are working actively with LMCC to identify
science based and education projects that the
Foundation can lead or support. We also intend
to provide leadership and advocacy on behalf of
improved lake ecology as it competes for attention
with other issues and priorities. In November,
our Annual Fran Smith Lake Preservation Award
will recognize outstanding individual and group
achievements supporting our mission.
PARTNERING TO IMPROVE OUR LAKE
AND WALLKILL RIVER WATERSHED…
The Foundation is also building alliances and
selective partnerships to enhance our capabilities to
achieve our mission, particularly those centered on
lake water quality, pursuit of new and innovative
lake technologies, education and information
sharing. We are partnering with technical firms,
universities and research organizations, and
forming alliances with schools and community
organizations sharing a common mission of
protecting the recreational values of our lakes
while creating long-lasting value for our donors,
volunteers and community members. Additional

Facebook page and on the LMCC website by
clicking on the Preservation Foundation tab.
We are pleased to welcome two new Foundation
trustees, Brenda Klumpp and Mike Whittam,
who join me and fellow trustees Bill Askin, Birgit
Bogler, Ernie Hofer, Peggy Laddey, Tom Murray
and Jim Wardell. We thank and appreciate the
continued support of our retiring founding
trustees, Bob Atkinson and Dean Reinhauer.

HOW TO GUARD AGAINST COMMON
SCAMS THAT TARGET SENIORS
We have all heard the sad stories; a senior
citizen was fleeced out of his home by an
unscrupulous caregiver. A home repair worker
turn out to be a thief who takes all the jewelry,
a call announcing you have won a prize turns
out to be a ploy to get you to empty your
bank account.
Many scams against older people go unreported
because the victims are embarrassed and afraid
they will lose independence if their children find
out they have been deceived. Fear of looking
stupid also keeps them from sharing doubts
with friends and family. Seniors who are socially
isolated are especially vulnerable to these scams.
HERE ARE A FEW COMMON SCAMS AND FRAUDS THAT VICTIMIZE SENIORS
DISTRACTION SCAMS: Someone knocks at your door and wants to talk about the fence in your
backyard. While you are out back an accomplice takes advantage and robs your house. Sad to say there
are all sorts of scams like that. All these opportunities either for people to case the joint or to get the
homeowner out of the house long enough for the TV and the jewelry to go out the other door.
HOME REPAIR SCAMS: Beware of people who knock on your door and offer home repair services.
Some are casing your home to rob you later. Others will overcharge for a supposed service that either is
not performed or is done poorly. Remember that legitimate contractors rarely solicit door to door and
you do not want to hire anyone to work on your house until you have checked licenses and references.
IRS SCAMS: Scammers will call a taxpayer saying money is due and demanding immediate payment via a
prepaid debit card, threatening arrest, deportations or loss of your driver’s license. If you have caller ID the
number may even show up as IRS.” The IRS does not call people. They send letters”, says Nora Schwartz a
detective with the Economic Crimes Unit of the Broward Sheriff’s Office in Florida.

Auxiliary unit from Lake
Hopatcong will again
be conducting Boating
Safety Courses at Lake
Mohawk this spring. These
courses provide required
certification for a New
Jersey State Boating Safety
Certificate and Boating
license. The course is
presented by experienced

the U.S. Coast Guard

Alice was born January 18th at Morristown

PAST VP OF LMCC BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Frederick M.H. Currie Jr., 74, of Sparta and
Naples, FL passed away on January 27, 2016, after
a brave battle against Guillain-Barre Syndrome
surrounded by his loving family. He was born on
July 24, 1941 in Philadelphia, PA.

Frederick was a graduate of Lafayette College and
Wharton School of Business. He worked as a CPA
for Arthur Andersen as well as several New Jersey
law firms and in private practice. Frederick served
in the Army National Guard and the First Troop
Philadelphia City Calvary. He was a member of the
Sons of the American Revolution and Color Guard.
Fred served as a member of the Lake Mohawk
Country Club Board of Trustees. He was a member
of the Finance Committee as well as Vice President.
Fred belonged to the LMCC Power Boat Club,
Yacht Club, and the Ski Hawks. He was on the
Board of Directors for the Sparta Commons and a
former member of the Lake Mohawk Golf Club.
Fred was a selfless, caring, and fun person who loved
a good joke, a good glass of scotch and life-long
friends. He enjoyed gardening and reading, but his
greatest joy was his family.
Frederick is survived by his loving wife of 47
years, Gail Crooks Currie; beloved father of Chip
Currie and his wife, Beth and John Currie; devoted
grandfather of Jason, Jessica and Luke and brother
of Patricia Gallagher. Contributions may be made

TAKING CARE OF OUR LAKES:
A REPORT FROM THE COMMITTE
A
s many of you are aware, The Lake Committee
was formed to work with Club Management and
our Consultants to safeguard the ecological health
of our lakes and to ensure that they provide the high
level of recreational use that we’ve all come to enjoy
for generations to come. This is a continuation and
focusing of decades of efforts by club membership.
The initial effort consists of the development of a
strategic plan which will have two parts. The first
being the cataloging of the current condition of
our lakes; water depth, sediment control systems,
etc.., and the second being a plan to implement
the changes and improvements required to our
lake infrastructure systems.
The recent upgrades to the Upper Lake, driven
by the state mandated replacement of that dam,
provided us with an opportunity to understand
how our lake systems have aged, and what
measures we need to take to improve the outflows
(drainage systems). That knowledge is now being
used to start on the far more challenging task of
how to address the issues in the main Lake.
Lake Mohawk’s main lake is a man-made lake,
covering 782 acres, resulting from the 1926 dam
construction of the Wallkill River. As is typical
with man-made lakes, the natural process of
eutrophication (evolution of a lake into a land area
through the deposit of sediments and nutrients)
is faster than that of natural lakes and has become
an increasingly important concern within the Lake
Mohawk community. It is obvious that decreased
water depth in the lake has many potentially
detrimental impacts to the health of the aquatic
ecosystem, continued use and enjoyment of, and
decreased property values throughout the Lake
Mohawk Country Club Reservation.
To better understand the extent of this issue, a
bathymetric survey along the shoreline of Lake
Mohawk was completed, providing a means of
measuring the degree of sediment deposit in the lake.
The surveys illustrate water depths as well as thickness
of the sediment layer along the shore and cove areas
of Lake Mohawk. The coves where included points
of interest in this exercise due to the known increased
sediment build up in these areas caused by the greater
number of discharge points into the lake along the
coves as well as a general lack of flow distributing the
sediment throughout the lake.
In addition to the bathymetric surveys, an
evaluation of the drainage directed to the main
lake had been completed. The purpose of this
study is to better understand the source of the
sediment prior to entering the Lake. Specifically
this is identifying the source of the water borne
materials carried by storm water runoff from the

3,110 acres of land draining into Lake Mohawk.
This is defined as the contributing drainage area.
Overland flow from this area enters the lake via
some 70 established points of discharge such as a
pipe, stream or swale.
The results of these efforts were mixed. The depth
of the majority of the lake remains more than
adequate to support unrestricted recreational use as
always enjoyed by the Lake Mohawk membership.
The sediment build-up is localized or regionally
based as opposed to spread throughout the lake
area. Portions of the sediment is organic or due to
vegetative material disintegration. The quality of
the lake water is very good over the past few years
through rigorous management of continuous and
timely chemical treatment providing effective weed
and algae growth inhibitors.
However, the areas of sedimentation are of
significant depth and restrict boat access to
more and more sections of shore. The process of
remediation or dredging these worst case locations

is not only costly but also increasingly restricted
by the environmental regulatory process. But the
option of inaction is not a viable one if the future
of Lake Mohawk is to be preserved as it currently
exists and is enjoyed by its membership.
Over the next several months LMCC will be
conducting informational meetings on this issue.
Additional articles will be provided in the Papoose
detailing the causes of sedimentation, the best
ways to reduce it, and plans to remove it from the
lake. With understanding and determination of
the membership, we are confident that an effective
plan to deal with these issues will be devised and
implemented to the benefit of current membership
as well as a legacy to the future members of our
uniquely beautiful and wonderful community.
We strongly encourage you to come to these
meetings and become an active part of the efforts
to ensure that Lake Mohawk will remain the
premier Lake Community in the metropolitan area
for generations to come.

SPARTA TRAIN STATION-HISTORY
RISING FROM THE ASHES
T
he Sparta Historical Society announced
that local Historian William Truran will be
providing an illustrated lecture on the history
of the Sparta Train Station located near Station
Park. He will provide the historical perspective of
this site and enhance the January 6, 2016 Sparta
Independent front page article on its current
reconstruction after the 2012 fire.
Truran, a noted author, educator and lecturer,
will provide a background on the installation of
the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad
into Sparta. The Station served the town from
the late 1800s and provided a vital conveyance
for commerce, industry, and tourism. It was a
necessary hub for Page 6 of 7 March Papoose-1.

for mining, building, and recreation. It became
the impetus of our town’s historical growth.
The original 1881 Sparta station was a standard
design used in all of the New York Susquehanna
& Western depots, it was one of fifteen built in
Sussex County by the railroad. It still has a very
rare example of a surviving water tower. By the
1940s, the Sparta Train Station‘s passenger service
had ended, but it still continued on as a freight
depot until the 1960s when that service was
discontinued. Truran will illustrate the Station
in its heyday, the demise in a fire, and its recent
rising from the ashes.
Following the presentation refreshments will be
served. Those attending will have a chance to ask
questions about the Train Station or other issues
relating to the history of the township or the county.

We have been very busy planning
for some major improvements
down at Sleepy. Most notably we
hope to replace the old platform on
the lagoon as well as install a new
dock on the lake that will serve as
a kayak and canoe launch. These
projects will require some funding
beyond what we currently have
in our account, so in order to get
a jump on this project it would
be helpful if members would be
prompt in sending in their annual
membership dues. I will be sending
out a letter in March, but folks
can take care of the dues payment
early by sending a check to Mike
Dennehy at 70 Whippoorwill Lane
made out to SLBA. Suggested dues
is once again $40. If you would like
to make an additional donation
to go towards something specific
please feel free.
Speaking of the new Kayak launch,
Sparta resident Tim Holovacs is
planning on starting a crew club
team on Lake Mohawk. We have
been discussing using the new
launch at Sleepy as a sort of “home
base” for the crew team. Our beach
is situated perfectly at the end of
the lake and we are discussing the
particulars. Of course we are taking
into account membership needs
and considerations and welcome
any input or questions. A crew team
would be a wonderful new addition
to our lake community.
