Fill the Jars with Water De Gevulde Waterkruik ONG IAGU LIMPO, TABANKA SAN Project information for R5, about low cost drinking water solutions by rainwaterharvesting in Guinea-Bissau, October 2012 From Paul Akkerman, to Hans Gelderblom / Rotary Club ‘s-Gravenhage /representing R5,. Representatives of villages in Buba young men, after a day labour on rice fields 1. Introduction Dear Hans Gelderblom, We and our African friends are grateful that that the R5 association, formed by 5 Rotary Clubs -- RC Bruxelles, RC Paris, RC Milano, RC London, RC ‘s-Gravenhage --, as fundingpartner supported our rainwaterharvesting project by € 10.000 in 2012. We, as AKVO- fieldpartner invested the R5 donation to build 50 water tanks for 50 families (500 persons) on the islands of Canafak, Cataban Ntunda, Samka and in the village Casabeche in the delta of south-west Guinea-Bissau. Also we used the money for training on the island of Canafak, where we trained 12 new tank builders. You can find the villages on the map (11) and in the overview of tank building in Tombali. Thank you for your help. Here we give you some actual information about the period May until October, the rainy season. I hope we can continue our cooperation. Best regards, Paul Akkerman, Dutch project leader. During this summer, with very good rainfall in Guinea-Bissau, our drinking water work has made some steps forward, while the government is lamed by the military coup of the 12th of April. On short time there is no hope that we can have a constructive cooperation with the government. The question is: How to support local population to survive in a sustainable way? The rainfall will help the rice farmers with a good crop in December and fill the jars. Our NGO is focussing on: A: Building up a good network of village representatives for safe drinking water. On the 12th of July we had our first meeting in our drinking water centre in Buba. (see the pictures) B: Going on building drinking water tanks, up to 200 a year, continuing the training of tank builders, yearly inspection and maintenance of old tanks. C: Collaboration with NGO’s in other regions, like DARIBO in the east and ADPP in the north of Guinea-Bissau by training their masons in tank building. D: Offering also other low-cost solutions for drinking water and sanitation like: well building, construction of rope pumps and latrines. Program 2013 In 2013 we hope to build another 200 tanks in different villages. In the overview of Tombali and Quinera, you see there are many demands. (See page 4 and 5) We plan to organize 3 trainings for new tank builders, one training for experienced tank builders and training for trainers. We will continue our start with wells and pumps. 1 In this report you will find: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 introduction and program 2013 pictures of the first meeting of representatives An overview with village information Regio Tombali An overview with village information Regio Quinera How people fill their tanks New models New products: well building, rope pump and latrine map page 1 page 3 page 4 page 5 page 6 page 7 page 8 page 9 2 2 First meeting representatives from villages, 12th of July 2012 in Buba in the meeting room representatives of different villages Sadjaliu collects the dates. lunchtime goodbye and see you next year Willfaba enters dates of villages and water in PC. Twenty representatives arrived from 16 villages, from the islands Widekea and Samka, from the far south, Canafak and Caduku, from the north, Mansoa, and nearby. All represented villages with severe lack of clean drinking water. Some travelled more than one day. We paid their transport and offered them a meal and helped with lodging. They offered, one, two or three days travelling to participate. We had a structured exchange of information about, the village, the inhabitants, cattle, the water problems, health situation, experience with tanks, maintenance, need for more tanks. There was a vivid discussion about the prize. Most of the participants agreed to pay CFA 25.000 (€38,50) in 2013, that is 19% of the real costs €200,-. In 2012 they paid 15%. Most people prefer to pay for a tap, cleaner and saver.
