Pathways into WelTec Programmes
WelTec offers a broad range of approved
qualifications from certificates and
diplomas to degree and graduate
diploma programmes.
The qualification levels allow for staged pathways through
the programmes from Level 4 to Level 7 on the New Zealand
Qualifications Framework.
International students can enrol directly from high school or after
completing professional qualifications or work experience in their
home countries. See page 28 for more details about country specific entry requirements.
You can enter at any level providing you satisfy the entry criteria.
WelTec’s English language programmes act as a pathway to further
academic study to our certificate, degree, bachelor and graduate
diploma programmes or to study at other tertiary institutions in
New Zealand and abroad. Our programmes are tailored to your level
of learning, and allow you to work through them to reach your goals.

Work Experience
WelTec’s programmes are taught by lecturers who are industry
specialists and classes strike a good balance between academic
content and a real-life industry focus. Many WelTec programmes
include a work placement or industry project that allow you to gain
real-world skills and crucial contacts in business and industry.
Working in the Capital City of New Zealand
If you are enrolled in a Level 5 Diploma or higher you will normally
be permitted to work while you study. This will generally allow you
to work for up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and
full-time during vacations. This is a great way to gain valuable work
experience, and meet local New Zealanders.
English Language Studies
WelTec is a great place to study English Language. Live and
study in New Zealand’s capital city, and get the opportunity
to learn English in real-world situations, visiting interesting
locations such as the New Zealand Parliament, our National
Museum “Te Papa” and Weta Workshop, home of New
Zealand’s word-famous film industry.

English for Specific Purposes (Level 3) – supporting your
English language learning in your field of interest: Engineering, Hospitality, Business, Computing and IT, and other options available.
Our classes are small and personal, with a focus on the individual
language learner. Our teachers are highly skilled and qualified, and
amongst them have many years of teaching experience.
Our courses are delivered in steps or “Levels”, allowing you to learn
at your own pace. Step by step we concentrate on improving your
reading, writing, speaking and listening, developing your vocabulary,
grammar, and pronunciation, and practising your language in real life
situations to help you develop skills and confidence.
Students from all over the world study at WelTec – you will study
English alongside new friends from many countries – and,
because most students at WelTec are “Kiwis”, you will meet lots of
New Zealand friends too.
Because WelTec is a large, multi-campus institution, you will have
access to great facilities at our main campus in Petone and in our
city campus in central Wellington – including cafeterias, computer
and IT facilities, a modern gym, great libraries and special studentfocused learning commons. And, you can use your new English
Language skills to pathway into one of WelTec’s many certificates,
diplomas, degrees and graduate diplomas in Business, Hospitality,
IT and Computing, Engineering, Creative Technologies, Counselling,
Building Construction, Hair and Beauty, or Sport and Exercise

WelTec’s English Language classroom studies are enhanced with
field trips, activities, and real-life learning experiences. A day trip
to the New Zealand Parliament supports students to learn about
New Zealand’s political system; a visit to the Museum helps you
understand New Zealand history and culture, and visiting the Weta
Workshop “Cave” gives you new language to discuss movies, acting
and special effects (as well as having lots of fun!).

WelTec business management programmes are developed to
provide you with a wide breadth of skills and specialisations to
prepare you for the world of business. Choose from courses
that prepare you for a general role in an organisation, or
for specialisations such as accountancy, sales, marketing,
human resources, or hospitality management. Further your

computer hardware and software, analysing and solving
computer-related problems, and managing information
systems.

Engineering Technology
Engineering technology is an applied area of study dedicated
to the development and implementation of existing technology
within a field of engineering. Engineering technologists work
with engineers on a wide variety of projects by applying
basic engineering principles and technical skills. Engineering
technologists also may assume senior management positions
in industry or become entrepreneurs.
WelTec’s Engineering School works closely with industry to
ensure our programmes are up to date with the latest industry
advancements. Specialist equipment includes a mechatronics
production and automation lab, 3D scanner and digitizer,
visualisation and realisation equipment, prototypers, CNC
machining centres, a vacuum casting facility and Computer
Aided Design Labs.
WelTec engineering graduates will demonstrate an in-depth
and breadth of knowledge and practical skills for employment
within the field of Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering or
Mechanical Engineering, and will have the ability to apply
analytical skills and knowledge of technological principles
and physical processes to solve broadly defined engineering
problems.

This degree is a nationally-led qualification, developed in partnership
with six of the largest Institutes of Technology in New Zealand.
This qualification forms the basis for a career as an engineering
technologist – an area in huge demand across New Zealand and
around the world. Engineering technologists apply current and
emerging technologies, often in new contexts, or apply established
principles in the development of new practice. It is an area that suits
students who are looking to combine both the engineering theory
aspect of a career with the applied and practical component. This
degree will be offered with majors in civil, mechanical and electrical.

in the civil engineering field. Highly skilled technicians are required

High Commission, Embassy, Consulate, or Trade New Zealand

Visa Renewal
Once you are in New Zealand you can renew your student visa at
WelTec with the Student Visa Officer.
Note: To meet student visa requirements you must attend 100% of
your classes at WelTec and show reasonable academic progress.
Employment
Students studying on Diploma, Degree and Graduate Diploma
programmes are generally permitted to work up to 20 hours per
week during term time and full-time (up to 40 hours per week) during
vacation.
On successful completion of a 2-year diploma or degree level
qualification students are eligible to apply for a 12-month graduate
job search visa.

Eligibility for Health Services
Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health
services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment
during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment.

Medical and Travel Insurance
International students must have appropriate and current medical
and travel insurance while in New Zealand. WelTec has arranged
insurance cover for all international students enrolled at WelTec.
WelTec covers its students through Comprehensive Travel Insurance
and the insurance cost is included in your WelTec programme
fee. Once paid you are covered for health, travel and personal
effects from your journey to New Zealand to the last date of your
programme plus one week. For more information on the policy and

Important Note: If you intend to stay in New Zealand past the last
date of your programme you must arrange for your own private
insurance cover. You may be liable for full medical and accident
costs without adequate insurance cover.

Airport Pick-up Service
WelTec offers a free airport pick-up service from Wellington airport to
your accommodation. You need to provide us with your flight details,
time of arrival into Wellington airport and your accommodation
location.

WelTec - Approved Homestays
Orientation
Homestays are arranged with New Zealand families who wish to
welcome international students into their home life.
At the start of each trimester there is an orientation programme
for new international students. Attendance at this programme is
compulsory.
A homestay is a great way to experience the New Zealand lifestyle,
make friends and to practise your English. You will have your own
room and all meals are provided.
The programme includes:
Cost: Ranges from NZ$250 – NZ$270 per week.
Minimum stay: Four weeks.

Student Services
WelTec offers a wide range of support services, including Student
Learning Support, a counselling service, the Students’ Association,
programme advisors and accommodation assistance. Student IDs
allow access to computer suites, wireless internet and after hours
entry to the WelTec campuses.
Personal Education Plan
The Personal Education Plan (PEP) is a key part of the enrolment
process at WelTec. All students coming to WelTec can take
advantage of this free service. PEP provides targeted support,
including; career goals, programme choice, learning styles, study
goals, numeracy and literacy levels and strategies for success.
Private Rental Accommodation (Flatting)
Students who wish to live independently can rent an apartment
or share a house with others. WelTec International can assist with
finding a suitable flat close to the WelTec campuses in Wellington
and Petone. Students usually have their own room in a house they
share with other students. Bathroom and kitchen facilities are shared
along with bills for utilities.
Cost: Ranges from NZ$100 – NZ$150 per week (not including food
and bills).
Temporary Accommodation
If you need a place to stay near Wellington, from one day to a
few weeks, WelTec can arrange temporary accommodation at
a backpackers. This is ideal for those who need a place to stay
for a few days to find their feet prior to making permanent living
arrangements. Cost: Ranges from NZ$30 to NZ$100 per day (not
including food).
