It is in the same spirit as the “California Melee Sport Car Run”. It is a two day Vintage Motorcycle Rally. Only old bikes need apply. It is for all those Vintage bikes that are ridden and not just show bikes. It is a road run and will be 500 miles. There will be a stop over at the half way point. This means that you will have to complete around 250 miles per day. It will be ran on some of northern California's most spectacular back roads. It is geared toward the enthusiast who rides regardless of bike presentation. You will be able to ride with a wide version of Vintage bikes and riders, much like times of old. This will be a real fun ride, so get out that old bike that has been sitting all winter or more. Do what ever it needs and go for it. This event will be bigger and better then ever, so don’t be left out. Riders need to pre enter and pre pay $ to secure accommodations. For more info and to get on the list contact, (The 1999 Moto Melee 1220 Pennsylvania Ave San Francisco Ca. 94107 or call Harley at 415-282-6735) This guy could help you win Vintage Races. Two tricks on how to win a Vintage National Motocross with one old BSA and one fat old rider. First trick is to have Kinetic Analysis work on your BSA (Or other Vintage bike) before the race. Ken Augustine said, “ED The bike’s front end goes up and down, the motor starts; the bad news is the brakes don’t work! (So what is new on most Vintage Bikes) The good news is the motor’s down on power, so it balances out.” Trick two: Chiropractor Dr. Bruce LeWinter of Mill Valley 381-6191 (Shameless plug so Ed can get another treatment for free , but he needs it) After the treatment on Ed’s Old Fat body Dr. LeWinter said, “Make your move on the white flag lap.” At the AHRMA Vintage National Motocross at Hollister 30 riders showed up in Ed’s class from all across the USA and Canada! Old Ed proved you can be Old AND proved you can be old and fat and still win both motos. Thanks Kenny Augustine, super tuner and Dr. Bruce LeWinter super Chiropractor Ed Megor San Rafael California June midler ride How many of you own a midler? No it’s not a brand of motorcycle you haven’t heard of. It has to do with size. This ride is for those bikes that are bigger than the pint size puddle jumpers, but aren’t the full sized road blasters. Its more a state of mind than an actual displacement size. The idea is to get bike and people together that can cruise in the 55 mph range. If you have a smaller screamer and you don’t mind twisting the guts out of it, come along. A British thumper should do just fine, or a Japanese enduro. Bikes with three wheels would work good. If you’re hastiest to bring out the slow one on the regular rides for fear of not keeping up, this ride’s for you. Larry koop will lead this ride on June 13 designed just for midlers. PAGE 4 TRIUMPH WINS HILLCLIMB John Hamilton JR. won the Goshen Iron Hoursman Middlebury Indiana hillclimb on May 16. on his Triumph in the 540cc class. john is from Cumberland MD. and was sponsored by ASAP Racing and Get High Raceware. The next race will be at White Rose Motorcycle M/C Club in Jefferson Pennsylvania on June 6. Join the CREW I here kids say but Dad there is nothing to do. As we get older and when some of us retire, it seams that we have less time then ever. So for any of you out there who has some time on your hands and would love to do some thing exciting and be useful contact Doug Smith of the AFM’s Race Track Workers Crew and tell him that the old Head Chicken sent you. You will get the best seat in the house and you will know that they can’t start a race with out you. You will get a free lunch and some gas money to get home on. Try it you will like it. 625-362-9032 9 DAYS 4200 MILES 9 STATES Derek Roberts on his new Triumph T509 along with a friend on a BMW K1100LT made the trek of 4200 miles after a decision at lunch to ride for Denver from Detroit Michigan and then just go some where from there. Derek said that the trip was a little rushed at times. they saw a little of this great land and truly enjoyed the trip. The trip only increased their lust for more. May be next time. “We had trouble with the BMWs batt and had to push start it several morning. Other then adding a little oil and lubing the chain on the Triumph it was just grate. I now will have to replace the tires, only after 15,500 miles on the front, it must have been something to do with speeds over a ton.” Overall I was very pleased with the trip and can’t wait to start planning? the next one. STEAMBOAT BITES THE DUST After 18 years the September Vintage Races at Steamboat Springs Co. will be no more. For all of us who raced there in the dirt and or on the street, we will have to add it to the list of places that I have raced at and is no more. To some of us that list is just to long. For all of you who never got to go, it was a blast. The British are coming It is British Columbia this time.. They are pushing for motorcycles to be included in their compulsory vehicle emission testing program. Will we be next? If this does come our way what will happen to all those H.D.s with their open exhaust systems? Will we who have Classic or Vintage bikes be exempt like the cars are now ?. Stay tuned. Corbin’s little bird passes test Mike Corbin’s electric car the Sparrow passed a series of Government required safety tests. This was a major hurdle toward getting the little vehicle on the rode. Tom Corbin said that production will start, and we will be able to start shipments in June. Stay tuned. H.D. Sales up for 99 Harley Davidson sales has exceeded dealer expectations. There market share has increased to 25.19%. The average age of the H. D. rider is now 43. There is still a waiting period for a new bike of 9 to 12 months depending on which model. Some models will take you 18 month to get. NORTON Rumblings of Norton’s return continues with rumors of a new Manx race bike. It is reported to have a fuel injected inline 4 cylinder engine. There is also some noise about a 600cc single. (They should have given the Manx name to it, so go figure.) Stay tuned. Government to search passengers The Clinton Administration wants to let police search the personal belongings of all passengers of vehicles that they stop for suspicion of the driver committing a traffic PAGE 5 FROM THE CHICKEN’S BEAK EDITORIAL COMMENTS FROM THE HEAD CHICKEN. ALL THE B.S YOU DID NOT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT. BUT SINCE I AM THE PUBLISHER OF THIS RAG, I AM GOING TO TELL YOU ANY WAY The opinions The last few months I have had what I think could be called some bad days. The last 5 or 6 times out for a Sunday morning ride, I have ended by either going back to the Ranch in the back of a truck or trailer. (Thanks Dennis and Stan) There was a couple of times that I had to limp home on one cylinder. Then there was the time that the coil burnt out. But that was not to bad, because I was almost out of oil, and it saved the engine. (Thanks Lucas) John Madri just told me “That riding with a motorcycle club is like being in the Marines, ’ We always bring back our wounded’” I will not talk about my house in foreclosure or being sued for not working on a bike or being sued for working on a bike, or being double charged for the copy machine, or crashing on the bicycle or anything like that. Like Tim said (See Pg.9) There is a passion in these old bikes. Yes! old bikes seem to have a drawing power to weird people like me. The fact that not very many of you have brought your old vintage bike in for me to work on, ( It helps pay the rent) you must not know that it is spring. Because of your lack of appearances, I have had time to keep working on my old 65 500 Triumph. I even came in to the Ranch early today and put that clutch back on. Because you have not showed up, I will be able to get it finished to go out this next Sunday and see if I can make it this time. I was thinking that I have sure had some bad days. But when I read in a Florida newspaper about one of our fellow motorcyclist, I think again. This fellow was working on his motorcycle on his patio and his wife was in the kitchen, making dinner. He was racing the engine and it slipped into gear. The bike dragged him through the plate glass door and dumped them both into the living room. His wife came in and found him cut, bleeding and unconscious. She ran to the phone and summoned an ambulance. Because they live on the top of a large hill She had to go down several flights of stairs to the street to direct the paramedics to he bleeding husband. He was transported to the hospital, patched up and sent home. While he was getting worked on at the hospital, She went back up the stairs into the house. She uprighted the bike, pushed it out side and proceeded to clean up the mess. Seeing that the bike had spilled gas on the floor she obtained some paper towels and blotted up the gas and through the paper towels into the toilet. When he husband returned from the hospital later that day and looked at the damage to his motorcycle, he became despondent and went into the bathroom to contemplate what to do next. While sitting on the toilet he finished a cigarette, which he flipped between his legs and into the toilet. The wife, who was in the kitchen, heard the explosion, ran into the bathroom and found her husband screaming in pain. His trousers had been blown away and he was suffering burns on his buttocks, back, legs and groin. The wife again called for a ambulance a second time. Down the stairs she went to the street to meet, the same ambulance crew, Up the stairs they went and loaded her husband on the stretcher again. While carrying him down the stairs the paramedics asked the mans wife, how her husband had burned himself. After she told them, they started laughing so hard that they tipped the stretcher and dumped her husband out . He fell down the remaining steps and broke his arm.) See, this proves that motorcycles and smoking are dangerous. Talking about bad days. From the California Examiner March 20. California Fire Authorities were assessing the damage done by a large forest fire and found a deceased male that was dressed in a full wet FOOTHILL BRITISH BIKE CLUB CALENDAR FOR JUNE MEET AT 9 AM SUNDAY JUNE 5 AUBURN SATURDAY JUNE 13 GRASS VALLEY SUNDAY JUNE 19 COLFAX SATURDAY JUNE 27 AUBURN AIR PORT FOR INFO CALL STAN AT 530-637-4317 TED AT 530-823-8480 NEIL AT 530-8781112 PAGE 6 suit, complete with dive tank, flippers and facemask. Cont. Pg. 7 Cont. from Pg. 6 It was later found that he had not died from burns, but from massive internal injuries. After investigating further it was found that he had gone scuba diving off the coast the day of the fire, some 20 miles from the forest fire. It would seem that the fire fighters seeking to control the fire called in a fleet of helicopters with large water buckets. The buckets were dropped into the ocean and then flown to the forest fire and emptied. You guessed it . One minute our diver was making like Flipper in the Pacific, the next he was doing the breaststroke in the fire bucket at 160 mph 300 feet in the air. Apparently, he extinguished exactly 5’ 10” of fire. Some days it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed. Or you can look at it another way, If God decided that you are going to die in a Forrest fire on a particular day, you can go scuba diving in the Pacific Ocean and you will still die in a Forrest fire that particular day. So what ever will be, will be. The other day I received in the mail a new tool for our Vintage Triumphs. to try out and let the sender know what I thought. Now this is not a new old tool. You know some thing like a gear puller or that special blue tool for removing the clutch off a Norton or some thing like that. You know it is hard enough to just find one of those old tools, but a New Tool for working on our Vintage bikes? . Yes this is a New Tool. Many of us have toiled with the task of adjusting Triumph valves. When you think you have got it right, you tighten the lock nut and it off again. This NEW TOOL makes this job a snap. No more fiddling with that small crescent wrench, or the valve adjusting wrench that was in the old tool kits, you remember the one that wore out after using it the second time This little jewel takes the place of the box end wrench and that pesky small crescent wrench that never stays adjusted.. Give Dennis Stubblefield a call down in Copistrono Beach. Phone 949-240-9357 and ask for tool #49. He will be glad to tell you where you can get this little jewel. It will only cost you 12.95 to have your own. Or you can come by the Ranch and pay me to use it on your Triumph and I will only charge you $15.00 ADVERTISERS NEEDED I have been putting out this Rag for more years then I can remember. I enjoy doing it, as it is some thing so different from what I have dune all the rest of my life. (Riding & fixing motorcycles) It is quite a challenge to just get it finished and out to you all on time. This thing now goes out to most of the states, and to England. Australia, Philippines Japan, South America, Canada, Mexico, and several APO’s. I must get at least one letter or call each week asking for it to be sent some where. This is very exciting but (you always know that there is always a big BUT!.) So here goes. The $15.00 a year that many of you are sending in is not covering the cost of the postage. The number of paid advertising is not covering the cost of producing it before I put the postage on. The more times I do this the more information I have to put in it to let you know about. BUT if I add more pages to this, the cost of postage will almost go up double. So here is what is needed We need for some of you out there in the motorcycle trades to spend some of your advertising budget on letting some of the wonderful people who either come into yours or my shop, to get this rag, (I put out 20 copies here at the ranch and all were gone by the 16 of the month) or to the ones who have sent in their $15.00 to have it sent to their homes, know that you care about Vintage Motorcycles. A VERY OPINIONATED AND VERY OLD MOTORCYCLIST WHO HAS SEEN IT ALL I know that the Old Head Chicken has heard it as many times as I have. “But they can’t do that, it is against the law” or “They would never do that, the Constitution will not allow it.“ and “It will never happen here” The Colorado based 4x4, “Pass Patrol Travel Club” has had to disband, because the National Park Service in the Canyonlands National Park has informed them that the club is now considered a “Commercial operation” and can no longer use the park. This is because their members pay dues, have membership requirements and post trip schedules on the internet, This is considered advertising by the Government. Their President, Larry Heck, stated that the dues went to provide safety measures for its members and guests. Such things as cellular phone service for use on the trail and other first aid equipment. They had a little headquarters where club members could get and give information, perform some minor maintenance on their 4x4s. This was also a location where they could be contacted, when they were needed for search and rescue work. The fact that the Club has been the first line of help to the Park Service many times had no baring on the Governments discussion. They had dune many good deeds such as remove Downed trees on Park trails. Located and helped stranded hikers. Get a Park visitor’s vehicle off a steep cliff, where it was stranded. A visitors vehicle out of a mud bog that it had gotten stuck in. Rescued mountain bikers. Rescued people who were stranded in a blizzard. They did this and more , and at their own expense and time. So farewell to Pass Patrol. All OHV clubs beware. You could be next on the list . Will the National Parks Service stop your club from going to or through a National Park on your bike. Can they stop you because you belong to a club and pay dues and put any thing on the internet. The question is often ask, why?. The answer is, Because they can. They start with one club and when they will stop, we will never YOU know. Remember when Big Brother said that we Should have seat belts in our cars, it was just a good idea. Then Big Brother said that they would make all the car makers put them in their cars for us. Then Big Brother made all the used car dealers install them in their cars, before they sold them to us. Then Big Brother said that you would only get a ticket for not warring one when you were stooped for some other reason . Now they will come after you and chase you down and give you a ticket if the officer Thinks, that you are not warring your seat belt. (Don’t run when they ask you to stop for not warring your set belt, if you don’t stop, they will chase you down and shot you.) Remember the Frog? If you put a live frog in a pot of boiling water, he will fight and try to get out and away. But if you put him in a pot of cold water he will relax , If you then PAGE 8 ON THE MEGAPHONE I am so excited that the good riding season is here. I hope all of you had a nice but short winter! Now this time last year, I had just concluded a one week trip down the Baja on my Moto Guzzi. Well, I haven’t done anything that adventurous this year, but I am off to a great start on this motorcycling season. Firstly, we have a veteran newsletter editor, Neil Novak. He has returned to our area and is taking over the rains for me. Not that being the newsletter editor is a full-time job, but I do feel like a big weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I really appreciate now what it does take to put out this news letter. Thanks Neil and good luck! The other news is that my Norton is finally finished, well it will never be totally finished, and I am having a ball riding it around. Every time I get on it’s like going back in time and that brings me to a thought that I had when I was at the Vintage races at Sears Point. My girlfriend, Wendy, and her daughter and I towed the Norton up and camped out at the track. Camping out at the racetrack is such an awesome experience; once in your life, everyone should try it. There is nothing like waking up to the sound of sleepy racing motorcycles firing up for the first time in the morning. And there is nothing like - starting an old English bike and riding it around the pits surrounded by pieces if motorcycle history. It is truly a sensory experience beyond compare. Anyway, Laverda, Triumph, and Yamaha were all offering demo-rides and I thought “How fun”, “I’d relay like to try some of the new bikes that I’ve been reading about ! ” I took a ride on the New Triumph Speed Triple. Now that bike screams out the urban mayhem vehicle with it’s dual headlights, swoopy abbreviated bodywork and loud lime green paint! But much to my surprise and disappointment, when I took it on the prescribed rout with the group leader it turned out to be a very quite (even without earplugs) refined and sedate motorcycle. Oh yeah, it had gobs of power all over the rev-range and those big tires grabbed the road like it was made of bubble gum, but I don’t feel the passion that I feel with the bikes that I normally ride. There is passion in these old bikes that the new ones are trying to capture, but as the new bikes get more and more refined, they are getting more like cars. At that point, they've lost everything that makes bikes as SPECIAL as they are. I recommend to all of you, go test one of the new bikes, it will have one of two ef- fects on you. You’ll either want to by one of the new refined bikes, that are on the market today or, like me, you’ll be inspired to go home and polish up that old steed in the corner of the garage. Maybe change its vital fluids and take it out for a spin to feel that forgotten passion. Either way, it’ll get you out there riding and that’s what is really is important. See ya, Tim Tim Riley is the President of the Monterery Bay Classic European Motorcycle Club. I stole this from their monthly news letter.
