Sparrenburg Castle Built around 1240, Sparrenburg Castle is Bielefeld’s imposing landmark. The tower gives a unique panoramic view over the city and the surrounding countryside. The castle’s casemates, an extensive network of underground passages, are well worth exploring on a guided tour. Linen Weaver Statue The Linen Weaver Statue was created by Hans Perathoner in 1909 to symbolise the economic development of the town and its close relationship with linen processing. The Linen Weaver and Sparrenburg Castle are the symbolic landmarks of Bielefeld. Old Town Hall Built around 1904, and incorporating a blend of historical styles, the Old Town Hall and the City Theatre form an architectural entity. A model of Bielefeld in 1650 is on display in the foyer. Linen Weaver Statue Ravensberg Park The historic buildings of the former Ravensberg Spinning Mill house a variety of cultural venues. In addition to the Huelsmann Museum exhibiting masterworks of European arts and crafts, there are an adult education centre, the History Museum, an art cinema and an events centre. View onto Sparrenburg Castle Old Market Square (top left) Bielefeld’s historic old town centre is lined with impressive Patrician houses, including the Crüwell House with its ornate late Gothic stepped gable from 1530. Huelsmann Museum Churches in Bielefeld Many religious buildings of art historical significance, containing priceless treasures, are to be found in Bielefeld. Well worth seeing in the old town are the Nicolai Church, the Marien Church, the Süster Church and the former monastery church of St. Jodokus. With around 30,000 students, an internationally renowned university (pictured above), and seven excellent further education colleges, Bielefeld is a town of science and research, and the leading tertiary education location in East Westfalia-Lippe. Special attractions are the centrally situated Ishara sports and leisure pool complex, and the climbing park at Johannisberg. The heights of the Teutoburg Forest stretch from the southeast to the northwest, reaching into the heart of the town. Climbing and Teampark International Sporting Events Cycling at the Obersee Lake in and around Bielefeld include the annual Hermannslauf, a multi-terrain run over 31km from Detmold to Bielefeld’s Sparrenburg Castle, and the pre-Wimbledon men’s tennis tournament in nearby Halle/Westfalen. Sparrenburg Festival (top left) The end of July sees the annual mediaeval spectacular at Sparrenburg Castle with its busy events programme, a regular highlight of the Bielefeld events calendar for many years. Wine Fair In September, wine growers and merchants present German wines in the atmospheric surroundings of the Old Market Square. Inviting events Throughout the year, colourful events and festivals with the theme “Bielefeld – simply inviting” entice you to visit the town. Highlights include one-off events and annual festivals drawing crowds from far and wide. The Huelsmann Museum displays applied arts and crafts in the former manager’s mansion next door. Cultural variety Theatre and art lovers are spoilt for choice in Bielefeld. Productions of drama, opera, ballet and musicals at the Stadttheater are as well received as the classical music concerts in the Rudolf-Oetker-Halle with its excellent acoustics.
