MISS HIBISCUS 2013 is MISS FBC PRISCILLA REDDY
Hibiscus Float Parade with FBC
FBC Queen Priscilla Reddy was crowned Miss Hibiscus 2013.
Every Year the staff of FBC get together to set up their float for the Hibiscus Parade which
marks the end of weeklong festivities. And just like each year, Team FBC was out to be noticed
yet again. Big Thank you to all who helped make this year’s Float a Huge Success.
Fiji Broadcasting Corporation Chief Executive, Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the crowning of Miss FBC Priscilla Reddy as Vodafone
Miss Hibiscus 2013 is significant to the change the country is currently experiencing.
Sayed-Khaiyum said, Priscilla is not only going to represent FBC
but she’s going to be representing Fijians as well and that has
brought about a lot of change and it’s a change in the mindset
and we want to be supportive of these sort of things all the time
because it means if we grow and the people of Suva grow, the whole nation grows. This brings
about a better understanding. It means everything gets better for the whole of Fiji
Priscilla Reddy will represent Fiji at the next Miss South Pacific Pageant in American Samoa in
December.
Cocktail for Major Clients of FBC
FBC Staff Cocktail
The Fiji Broadcasting Corporation hosted a cocktail for its major clients on Wednesday 13th August. This
was simply to thank our clients for sticking with us and for making us the Number One choice for Both
Radio and TV in the country.
A Message from the CEO:
FBC treated staff members to a small party in celebration of our win at this year’s Hibiscus
Festival.
An incredible impact in less than two years which has led to our TV and radio
competitors making major changes to play catch up with our number one position.
But we believe the biggest secret to our success has been our ability to quickly
establish FBC as the “people’s TV station”. At FBC we know that the People of Fiji
are our biggest asset. Without their support and admiration all our efforts would
be in vain. Through promotions such as “I love Fiji” and “I am” – Fijian’s don’t just
watch and listen to FBC, they become a part of it.
Of course all this incredible development at Fiji’s fastest growing broadcaster
would not be possible without all of you, our business partners. I especially want to thank those of you
who have increased their faith in FBC by moving almost your entire broadcasting spend over to us.
For those who you who are still in doubt about making the big move,
let me tell you even our website in the last 6 months has grown by
more than 24k viewers and we now average more than 142k hits per
month. An independent Survey conducted by one of our biggest clients showed that of more than a 1000 Fijians surveyed earlier this year
over 66% watch FBC TV exclusively. These figures are simply astounding
anywhere in the world. It also showed our number one radio status in
the country through the most popular Bula FM. An incredible growth in
listeners who have the spending power, for all our stations means we will soon have a never before scenario where ad space on TV and selected radio stations will become scarce.
We have reached this incredible position because we believe in ourselves and we believe and know that
we can do the best for you and the people of Fiji. We are number one now and still growing and we want
you to grow with us.
- Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum -
The 63rd Miss World Pageant kicked off to a grand opening at the Westin Nusa Dua in Bali on Sunday
September 8th. Miss Fiji alongside 130 other contestants from around the world arrived in to the popular resort island of Bali on September 3rd and was greeted to a reception fit for Indonesian royalty.
The contestants were greeted by Miss World officials, body guards, security and the world press upon
arrival at the international airport before being whisked away to begin a month long tour and competition for the 63rd Miss World finals.
The National Costume judging was the first competition to take place and unfortunately for Fiji, we did
not place this year. Miss Fiji performed in the talent
round next just missing out on a final spot after receiving very tough competition from a lot of professional singers and dancers.
The Beach Beauty competition took place on the
morning of the 8th where all 131 contestants paraded for the judges in a 2 piece swimsuit. The top 40
finalists in this round will be announced soon before
selecting the top 10 finalists that will be revealed
during the live coronation on September 28th.
Fiji’s hopes will weigh in during the Beauty with a Purpose judging and the private interview that will
be held later on in the competition.

Super Nanny
Super nanny is a reality TV programme which originated in the United Kingdom
about parents struggling with their children’s behaviour.
The show features professional nanny Jo Frost, who devotes each episode to helping a family where the parents are struggling with their child-rearing. Through
instruction and observation, she shows the parents alternative ways to discipline
their children and regain order in their households. Frost is a proponent of the
“naughty chair” theory of discipline and is strictly opposed to spanking.

SPOTLIGHT
This month’s spotlight is on the Flu. Being that we’re experiencing cold conditions throughout the country,
the flu bug has been making the rounds. Read on to get some simple tips that will prevent anyone from
catching the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs.
What is flu?
Influenza, commonly shortened to “flu,” is an extremely contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza A
or B viruses. Flu appears most frequently during cold weather. The flu virus attacks the body by spreading
through the upper and/or lower respiratory tract.
What’s the difference between a cold and flu?
The common cold and flu are both contagious viral infections of the respiratory tract. Although the symptoms can be similar, flu is much worse. A cold may drag you down a bit, but the flu can make you shudder at
the very thought of getting out of bed.
Congestion, sore throat, and sneezing are common with colds. Both cold and flu bring coughing, headache,
and chest discomfort. With the flu, though, you are likely to run a high fever for several days and have headache, myalgia, fatigue, and weakness. Usually, complications from colds are relatively minor, but a severe case
of flu can lead to a life-threatening illness such as pneumonia.
More than 100 types of cold viruses are known, and new strains of flu evolve every few years. Since both diseases are viral, antibiotics cannot conquer cold or flu. Remember: Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections.
A few antiviral medications are available to treat flu. But there are no medications that specifically defeat the
common cold. Antibiotics may be helpful if there is a secondary bacterial infection.
How is flu spread?
The flu virus is spread from person to person through respiratory secretions and typically sweeps through
large groups of people who spend time in close contact, such as in daycare facilities, school classrooms, college dormitories, military barracks, offices, and nursing homes.
Flu is spread when you inhale droplets in the air that contain the flu virus, make direct contact with respiratory secretions through sharing drinks or utensils, or handle items contaminated by an infected person. In the
latter case, the flu virus on your skin can infect you when you touch or rub your eyes, nose, or mouth. That’s
why frequent and thorough hand washing is a key way to limit the spread of influenza. Flu symptoms start to
develop from one to four days after infection with the virus.
SPOTLIGHT
What are some Healthy Habits that may prevent one from getting the flu?
1. Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
2. Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
3. Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
4. Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an
alcohol-based hand rub.
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches
his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
6. Practice other good health habits.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get
plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

The ninth month into the year 2013 and its fair to say, most sports is going on the back burners at
the moment. It’s usually that time of the year when sports start to round off their season and get
into the festive months, which follow. However, not to say that there are still sports events happening locally, which will keep you intrigued.
Let’s start off with something, which will keep not only Fiji glued but the entire Pacific. The 9th
Pacific Mini Games starts in the beautiful settings of Wallis and Futuna and Team Fiji will be once
again the top bets to defend its title. There are only eight sports on offer at the games but the competition between the Pacific nations is one, which will never be anything but robust. FBC Sports
will be present in Wallis and Futuna from September 1-12 and bring you the latest from the games
on our six radio stations and FBC TV. So sit back and enjoy and partake in the celebrations as Team
Fiji athletes try to bring the gold home.
Switching back to Fiji, there is the Farebrother Rugby Trophy fever gripping the capital city of
Suva. Suva defends the trophy against eight different challengers as they try to keep the title won
against Nadroga last year. FBC TV has exclusive rights to bring you the delayed coverage of Suva’s
defence and also live commentaries will air on BULA FM each Saturday during the duration of the
games.
Moving on to rugby league, and being the World Cup year, the one and foremost match every
league fan is looking forward to is the Battle of the Bati. This will pit the local hopefuls against
the overseas-based Fijian players before the final World Cup team is announced. This match takes
place in Suva and FBC Radio and FBC TV will be there to bring you the very best. Want to know
who makes the team to the World Cup, tune in and we will bring it you first.
Football has been one of the sports on the down low for a few weeks
but resumes with the Fiji Sun/GP Batteries National League. As usual the
FBC’s ‘Voice of Soccer’, Ray Stoddart brings you the games live on Radio
Fiji 2 and delayed coverage is on FBC TV.
Now, there has been a lot of hype and dissatisfactions about the lack
of international football coverage. Here at FBC, we try our best to give
you lots for no charge at all and this will continue again in September.
The very best action from the Capital One Cup featuring the likes of
Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea, is
airing live and exclusive on FBC TV. We also have the best coverage from
the Europa League featuring top teams from Europe and this will
also be live and exclusive.
Sandwiched in between are sports such as touch rugby, table
tennis, the best of sports talkbacks and much more ….
So as we say each month, why go anywhere when the Difference
is Clear only on FBC.
Bula movie fans, it’s your friendly neighbourhood film friend Clarence and Shristi.
Hollywood Movies
Insidious 2 releases this month. You might think that such a feature would have been saved for
Halloween but the scares will be in early. If the first film is anything to go by then horror fans
have something to look forward to.
Lady Di gets her bio pic in theaters this month as well with the film aptly titled “Diana”
Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel who up till now has only been known for some luke warm efforts, the film stars Naomi Watts as the peoples Princess. This one might be for hard core Di fans
only though or for folks who like their movies more grounded.
For the kids you have “Cloudy with a chance of meat balls 2”
Staring Bill Hader whose had a great run with supporting roles in classics such as Superbad
and Pineapple express along with the very funny Anna Faris from Scary movie and one of
my faves House Bunny. The feature was directed by Phil Lord who went on to do the 21 jump
street remake
This new affair is directed by Cody Cameron who started his career as a voice actor and animator on such hits as the Shrek series, so we know that he knows what it takes to put on a show.
At the very least Cloudy with a chance of meat balls 2 might be a decent way to keep the kids
busy
Bollywood Movies
As we come closer to the end of the year, we see the release of the big budgets movies from
Bollywood.
September kicks off with the remake of Amitabh Bachchans 1973 action thriller, Zanjeer. Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, the film stars South actor Ram Charan and Priyanka Chopra in the
lead roles. Along with Sanjay Dutt, Prakash Raj, Atul Kulkarni and Mahie Gill. It will be great to
see another remake of Big B’s film but I am a bit sceptical about the star cast – can they live
up to the high bar set by the original actors? Only time will tell.
Another big release this month is Yash Raj Films Shudd Desi Romance. Another romantic
comedy directed by Maneesh Sharama, SDR sees Pavitra Rishta star Sushant Singh Rajput (
Manav ) in the lead role with Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor. I love romantic comedies
and I have high hopes from this one.
Also releasing this month is another film that was shot right here in Fiji, Warning 3D. The film
is a creature feature and stars all new comers. 3G and Table no. 21 were well received by local
audience but not so much by critics, so I am curious to see if the makers of Warning have
something interesting to offer.
Apart from these movies, we also have the adult comedy Grand Masti , The Horror Story and
the winner of Critics week’s viewer’s choice award, Lunchbox.
Each month we publish one of our very own staff favorite home cooked recipes. This
month, Mr. Apenisa Naitini, our Events Supervisor, shares his favorite Chicken in Sweet
Sauce Recipe with us.
Chicken in Sweet Sauce
Shooting guns and role playing is something that is becoming
very popular. Borderlands would be the most popular trend setter
in the genre but industry big guns Crytek added the winning formula to their popular Far Cry series; and the results are spectacular.
Ingredients
•
1 pkt chicken pieces / wings
•
1 garlic
•
Half a cup sugar
•
1/3 glass dark soya sauce
•
2 table spoons oil
Far Cry hit the scene back in 2004 to raved reviews. Set on a tropical
island, your role was to rescue a stranded woman, a task which leads into
top secret military research facilities and some awesome gun play in the
jungle.
Part two took the series to the grass lands of South Africa to mixed reviews, but
part three takes the action back to sandy beaches and tropical jungles. You play
young man named Jason who along with his friends gets kidnapped by a bunch of
human traffickers while vacationing on a fictional island located between the Indian
and Pacific Ocean. No you have to man up and get your friends back while trying
to survive the harsh tropical conditions.
Well to be honest the game might be a harsh tropical setting for anyone
who did not grow up in the pacific. For us the whole thing looks very familiar and as someone from Fiji this familiarity is what made the game
so much fun.
Aside from the setting the other allure is the awesome skill system which allows you to train Jason into the kind of man you want
him to be. Like to go in guns blazing? Then spend your points into
increasing ammo and weapon damage. Maybe you like to sneak
around and use the jungle as your cover, then points into stealth
skills would help and soon you’ll be just like the Predator – minus
the funky vision.
If it bleeds you can kill and aside from the brutes that took your
friends the island is home to all kinds of wildlife that come into play
throughout the game. Too many people to take on in that bandit
camp? No worries; simply lore a jungle tiger into there.
