Sometimes it is the basic things that we tend to forget, so Qantas Holidays has compiled some tips to simplify your planning. We’ve also included a checklist so you don’t forget the vital things. k Climate America is a big country with big climate variations. So make sure you’re prepared. It is customary to tip about 15-20% of the bill in restaurants. Additionally, you are required to tip hotel staff, bartenders, taxi drivers and door attendants. Tips are additional to local taxes. In Mexico tipping is not expected however there are many American tourists who tip so it is becoming more popular. g Electricity America The current is a 110 volts, 60 cycle AC. The plug is a flat two-prong variety. Some appliances will need a special adaptor plug. Mexico Electrical sockets (outlets) in Mexico are very similar to the electrical outlets found in the United States and Canada, and if your appliance has a North American plug, it’s possible that you won’t need any adapter at all in order to plug in there. However, if your plug has a grounding or polarisation prong, you may need an adaptor. d Cost of a... It is now mandatory, under the Visa Waiver Program to receive an electronic authorisation known as ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) no less than 72 hours before travel to the USA. This can be obtained at the following website www.cbp.gov/esta. From 8 September 2010 the United States government will charge a US$14 as payment for the mandatory ESTA for all individuals proposing to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. The fee is payable by credit or debit card and, it is very important to make payments through the official website. This applies for passengers flying to the United States either as destination/stop-over or as a via/ transit point. From the Big Apple and Las Vegas to flapjacks and curly fries, it’s a country that’s beautifully stitched together, making it your perfect holiday destination. The West The South With front row seats to flame red sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico, as well as adrenaline-pumping roller coasters, celebrity studded streets and the country’s most notorious prison, the west coast is a wild ride. Visit Anaheim’s Disneyland Resort, jump aboard a cable car in San Francisco, see killer whales at San Diego’s SeaWorld and soar above the incredible Grand Canyon. More than any other part of America, The South has an identity all of its own - a musical way of speaking, a complicated political history and a food culture that’s synonymous with the region: succulent barbecue, plump Gulf oysters, cheesy grits and fried green tomatoes. Here, music history runs all the way from slave spirituals through to jazz, blues, rock ‘n’ roll and 21st century hip-hop. Nashville, the world’s undisputed country music capital, will keep you honky tonkin’ deep into the Tennessee night, while Elvis devotees will cherish a visit to Graceland. Beaches run for hundreds of miles down the South’s Atlantic Coast, so bring your sunscreen, and a pair of sturdy shoes for the countless paths to hike, mountains to climb, rivers to run and swamps to explore. The East The city of New York is the thumping heart of The East with its boroughs, museums and parklands. Like much of the region, it’s steeped in history yet has an immediacy that greets you on every Brownstone covered street corner. Tear yourself away from the Big Apple and wander the hallowed halls of Harvard University - the oldest institution of higher learning in America, President spot in the country’s capital - Washington DC or explore the ivy league town of Boston. New Orleans Use your Qantas Frequent Flyer points towards any Qantas Holidays product.# (See page 6 for details) Planning your holiday Getting Around Coach Tours Since America is so big, there’s a huge range of travel options you can choose from. The following suggestions will help you get the most out of your holiday. For coach tour options in the west see pages 72-81 and in the east see pages 104-110. Road Trip One of the best ways to discover America is on a road trip. You can explore the country at your own pace and go off the beaten track in a hire car or campervan. Car Hire For Hertz and Alamo rental vehicles options see pages 14-16. Today it evokes images of bronzed bodies, golden beaches, Hollywood and Disneyland Resort. But there is so much more to this state; it is a place of natural wonders and breathtaking beauty, just a short drive from Los Angeles and San Francisco. Sarah says... From beaches in the west to ski fields in the east, vineyards in the north to deserts in the south… California has it all. The best way to experience this amazing state is to drive the open road! It’s easy, safe and you may run into a celebrity or two along the way! PALM SPRINGS DEATH VALLEY LAKE TAHOE Majestic mountains and miles of incredible bright, blue year round sky are the backdrop of the resort town of Palm Springs. People flock to this sunny city to play golf (there are 116 courses) and tennis and enjoy the desert climate. Relaxation is the main aim here; you can wine, dine, sit by the pool or indulge in a blissful range of spa treatments. While the name evokes all that’s harsh, hot and hellish about the desert, you’ll find an endless wonderland of rugged canyons, glimmering saltpans, steaming hot springs, rare wildlife and undisturbed wilderness to explore here. Death Valley is the lowest, driest spot in California and one of the hottest places on Earth. It’s a unique adventure. G Accommodation G Accommodation Shimmering softly in shades of blue and green, Lake Tahoe straddles the California-Nevada state line and is one of the most beautiful lakes in America and also its second deepest with an average depth of 300 plus metres. The sun shines here three out of four days of the year, so it’s ideal for outdoor activities including swimming, boating, kayaking and windsurfing during summer. Winter delivers dumps of snow, so you can hit the slopes at more than a dozen ski resorts. The nightlife’s also great and the dining options plentiful.
