Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter
Activities Report
Deep South All Breed Obedience Training Club participated in two important events in the month of October for
the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter. On Saturday, October
2, 2010 we participated in a Veterinary Clinic where area
residents received free initial vaccinations, free microchips,
for each participant free dog and cat food, and educational
materials on proper pet care and local Jefferson Parish veterinary clinics. The event was hosted by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the Friends of the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter, local area veterinarians, and
Jefferson Feed, Pet and Garden Center. Deep South participated in working this event by volunteering to process
the people and their animals as they came in for vaccinations and microchips. Other Deep South members handed
out educational material handouts as the people and their
pets exited the event, with one of the handouts being information on Deep South All Breed Obedience Training Club.
volunteers from the Jefferson SPCA, the Humane Society
of the United States and more. Without the volunteers, we
would not have been able to have this event. We also want
to thank two veterinarians who volunteered their time to
help get animals vaccinated, Dr. Bernie Mayer and Dr.
Elizabeth Ford-Jones. Also a huge thank you to Dr. Hudson for being there with her mobile spay/neuter van and to
Julie Bowen for issuing spay/neuter vouchers. And last but
not least, Lynn Morvant was a key player in this event and
Amanda Arrington of the HSUS was great to work with on
this endeavor.”

paperwork prior to
entering the clinic.)
The response to this event was incredible. People started
getting in line with their animals at the Belle Terre playground in West Jefferson around 6:00 AM, and the normal
wait time throughout the day was between 2 to 3 hours.
The waiting line was closed at 1:30 PM, and the last person
and their pet were processed through a little after 4:30 PM.
Overall, it was a very rewarding day to see so many people
come to get the vaccinations and microchips for their dogs
and cats. For the day, 925 dogs and puppies and 200 cats
and kittens are vaccinated, for a total of 1,125 animals vaccinated. Also for the day, 495 animals were microchipped,
and 78 spay/neuter vouchers were issued. People were
given 44,000 pounds of dog and cat food, with most of it
being dog food.

Kim Staton, an animal welfare consultant to the Jefferson
Parish Animal Shelter and the Jefferson Parish Animal
Welfare Committee stated the following in an email dated
October 4, 2010 reporting the results to the newsletter.
“It was a great event and obviously very well received by
the community. It was a huge success for all with very few
problems. A huge thanks to everyone who helped with this
event! We had a few volunteers from nearby Delgado University, Deep South All Breed Obedience Training Club,
A second and much smaller event took place on Saturday,
October 9, 2010. Several members of Deep South All
Breed Obedience Training Club brought six dogs out to a
Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter adoption event held at the
Wal-Mart on Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Kenner,
Louisiana. The members who participated in this event
were extremely satisfied with the results, as three of the
dogs that were brought from the Animal Shelter were
adopted out on that day. One of the dogs adopted out on
that day was a Pit Bull mixed breed bitch named Katie,
whom Marlane Mayo had trained extensively at the Animal
Shelter and further trained her in several sessions at Jefferson Feed, Pet, and Garden Center.

time with training her in basic obedience at the JP Animal Shelter and at

Because we are taking the time to work with the Animal
Shelter and their dogs, we are being asked to work more
and more at their adoption and other events. We are glad
that as a club we are making a little impact in improving
the training and adoption of dogs from the Animal Shelter.
But more volunteers are needed; more Deep South members need to share their love and compassion for dogs when
the club is given the opportunity to be involved at these
events. Please consider volunteering and giving some of
your time and skills, for you can truly make a difference in
an animal shelter dog’s life.

ADDITIONAL CLASSES FOR ADDITIONAL DOGS
By Jody Legendre (504) 738-3831
At the September 13, 2010, meeting, the Club voted to reinstate an old policy which gives more structure as to
how members can enroll additional dogs (still at no additional cost) that they own into classes after they have
completed classes with their first dog.
The “Membership Agreement” form is also used for a “Class Reservation” form. So a form must be completed for each new dog going into a class for the first time. You can obtain this form from on our website,
www.deepsouthobedience.com and click on “Application”, or get a copy from me. Give the completed form
plus proof of current shots (Rabies, Parvo, & Distemper) to me for your class assignment. Please indicate if
any of your membership information is new: i.e., address, phone numbers, e-mail, etc.
Your dog cannot be assigned to the appropriate class until I have these documents. Several members have
told me they would like to be in the next Beginner’s Obedience class (probably October, 2010). Those of you
that have told me this need to get these forms to me, as this policy is in effect now. Also, and I am very sorry
to say, my memory is not so good, and I may have already forgotten you. Now the responsibility is yours for
your dogs to get into classes. Please get these papers to me at class on Tuesdays, or mail them to me (sorry,
no faxes).
As always, if you have any questions you are welcome to call me at home or see me at class. More and more
of you members are taking advantage of the club’s benefits, and I will truly appreciate your cooperation with
this policy.
Now, don’t forget to come out to our club functions and give a helping hand if you possibly can. We always
need lots of hands. We do “on the job training” and you will enjoy the activities, plus seeing our dogs in action. It all goes into what makes this a really great club, but you’ll never know what you are missing if you
never participate! The more of us there are, the easier it is to have these events.
