Dear Friends,
Welcome to the American Cancer Society’s Starry Night Gala, an
evening of entertainment and inspiration. Tonight you are truly our most
honored guests. With your support, the American Cancer Society is
creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people
stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.
We are now a nation of nearly 12 million cancer survivors — thanks
in large part to the generosity of community leaders like you. Despite the
economic climate, the American Cancer Society has:
• Launched landmark cancer research focused on causes and cures. With an eye on the future, the
American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study 3 is engaging 300,000 participants in a study
focused on the genetic, lifestyle, and environmental links to cancer. In addition, the Society is
currently funding $473 million in multi-year research grants in world-class institutions such as
Columbia University, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center,
Albany Medical College, Princeton University, New York University, Mount Sinai School of
Medicine, the State University of New York, and more.
• Served more patients and caregivers in New York and New Jersey than ever before. We provided
navigation and support programs to nearly 53,000 newly diagnosed patients and placed 220 new
patient navigators on-site in treatment centers in both states. In addition, local patient programs
such as Look Good . . . Feel Better, Reach to Recovery, and Road to Recovery continued to meet
the practical and emotional needs of patients in your community.
• Provided free lodging and caring support to more than 3,500 people who traveled far from home
for the best hope of cure. Our three Hope Lodges in Manhattan, Rochester, and Buffalo are a part
of a network of 30 such facilities located near major cancer centers across the nation, serving as a
home-away-from-home for hundreds of guests from New York and New Jersey.
On behalf of the Starry Night Gala committee and the American Cancer Society, I would like
to congratulate Mark Reagan as our 2011 honoree.
I offer congratulations and my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated chair, Barbara Sellinger, for all
her tireless work to make this gala a memorable evening. Thank you all for being here tonight and
for your continued support.

We meet tonight, at the 4th Annual Starry Night Gala, to celebrate the strides that have been
made towards achieving our shared mission of eliminating cancer as a major health problem. You
can take great pride in the knowledge that we are seeing simultaneous downturns in the rates of
cancer mortality and cancer incidence. You will be happy to know that your American Cancer
Society continues to be the leader in this effort.
The American Cancer Society has had the pleasure of collaborating with various organizations
to meet the needs of the cancer patients in this community. This year alone, through our on-site
patient navigation programs within the hospitals, we are reaching more cancer patients, at the time
of their diagnosis, than we have ever reached. This is a critical time for cancer patients because they
may be frightened, confused and unaware of the valuable resources that are available to them. The
American Cancer Society guides patients and their families throughout their cancer journey to
ensure that they are aware of these resources and understand how to best utilize them.
The American Cancer Society is proud to partner with our 2011 Starry Night Gala Honoree,
Mark Reagan, to better serve our community. Through this partnership in the fight against cancer
we are able to extend our reach to those who are newly diagnosed. On behalf of the Society, I
congratulate you on this honor, and thank you for your commitment to saving lives.

“Why me? Why her? Why my parents? Why my best friend? Why
my child? I don’t understand.”
I have heard these questions time and time again during the past
few months. Friends and family members who have lost someone close
to them to cancer. They were so healthy, they said. I understand why
they didn’t go to the doctor’s office for that physical, that breast exam
or mammography that colonoscopy, that dermatologist review. Why
do I have to take time out of my busy schedule? I didn’t have anything
wrong with me that I knew about. I was just like them. I sat in that sun
and refused to go to the dermatologist as my husband repeatedly
demanded, I went and I am fine, I am lucky. I canceled my colonoscopy
exam five times and finally rescheduled it, and again, I am fine. I had breast sonograms, breast MRI
and even biopsies. Again, I am fine. Why? Because I learned that preventative evaluations are the
key.
A very close friend of mine recently lost his wife to colon cancer. She had been healthy and
didn’t schedule that colonoscopy. From diagnosis to death — only six short weeks. When he agreed
to become active in the Starry Night Gala committee, to join us, he told me that he did so and would
spend all the time he could to just impact one person — if he could convince one person to get that
breast exam, that colonoscopy or that skin review, then it is worth it, he has saved a life, provided
another birthday. I agree with him and that is why I am here.
This is my second year as the chair of the Starry Night Gala for American Cancer Society. I
think helping others is the most important thing I could ever do. Life is so vital, so fragile and so
important. I am an aneurysm survivor. I lost my father a little over a year ago and over 10 friends
or family members to cancer and other disorders. A cousin, an aunt, a close friend, a wife of a friend,
fathers and mothers of friends, a brother of an in-law. I too want to impact others, to convince them
that they need to get preventative testing. Get that one test, that one exam — that if done in a timely
manner — will too save their lives.
I have learned so much about the American Cancer Society during the past year and what they
can do to help save lives. They have so many preventative and awareness programs that I know if I
can help them raise money to fund such programs, to raise awareness and fabulous research that
we will continue to save so many other people. So many more birthdays will keep on occurring.
They have the following programs to name a few. Colon Cancer Awareness Program, Tag2Nag2,
Coaches v. Cancer, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they partner with organizations
throughout the country to increase awareness of virtually every type of cancer and in every type of
person — from birth to death, whatever race or creed. There is no other organization that could
help save so many lives as this one.
Please join me in this quest. It is so worthwhile.

2011 Starry Night Gala Honoree
My mother, God love her, is 85 years old. She is fond of saying
“Life is funny.” Indeed, life can be very funny.
My mother was diagnosed in 1975 with breast cancer, a trauma
for everyone. She responded with true grace, determination and
humor. She called it “a bump in the road.” She had a mastectomy,
no radiation, no chemotherapy.
Last year, they spotted a small spot. She had a lumpectomy and
35 treatments. She is as fit as a fiddle. When I asked her about it
during the treatments she mentioned the “bump in the road.” Again,
she said, “Life is really funny sometimes.” She was quick to tell me I
had had it much worse.
In 1995, I returned from Brazil, felt a bit funny that night and
called my doctor. I described how I was feeling. He ordered me to
the hospital immediately. Having gone 17 years without missing work, I was a little dubious. Three
days later my cardiologist sat with me in his office and said, “You need a heart transplant and you
need it soon.” I had hit my bump on the road. Life is a bit funny.
Over the next eight years, I fought the notion of “soon.” Like my mother, I was determined to
live with grace, determination and humor. I suffered cardiac arrest in Boston in 1998. I survived
many minutes on the floor with three men sustaining me with CPR. I awoke three days later with
a defibrillator in my chest and host of new challenges.
Visits to emergency rooms and hospitals in France, England, and more than a few hospitals
around the country brought me face to face, again and again with those most remarkable people,
nurses and doctors.
I was finally doing so poorly I qualified to be listed for a heart. I entered Newark Beth Israel in
early November of 2002. I waited 154 days — March 20, 2003 — before hearing that magical phrase
“Mr. Reagan, we have a heart.”
All of my feelings about tonight with having lost several family members and close friends to
this terrible disease and several friends battling for their lives every day, I choose to embrace the
fight against this disease and the fight for life.
Know in your hearts that our fight is for all those who are fighting to live and those who dedicate
everyday to helping others win that fight.
My feelings are very much about dreams — dreams that hit a bump in the road — dreams that
are restored by the unflinching efforts of those we are really celebrating tonight.
Men and women with the dedication, the dreams, to make our dreams come true, to get us past
that “bump” in the road so we can say, “Life is funny. Life is fun.”
So, in the words of an Arab proverb, “Throw your heart out in front of you and run ahead to
catch it.”

Hope Lodge NYC is a 60-room residence in the heart of
Manhattan that provides free accommodations to cancer
patients (and their caregivers) from across the country
and globe who are undergoing out-patient treatment
at one of New York City’s many preeminent medical
centers. Since opening in November of 2007, we have
provided comfort and life-changing services to over
5,500 patients and caregivers from 26 countries and 46

The Cameos
New Jersey’s Favorite Oldies Group
The Cameos are a talented nine-piece oldies/
vocal harmony group who create and perform
their own unique renditions of the most popular
songs of the 1950s and ’60s, with a little ’70s added
for good measure.
Their musical repertoire consists of those
special hit records made famous by many great
artist such as The Flamingos, The Platters, Johnny
Maestro, The Duprees, Dion, The Tokens, Elvis
and Jackie Wilson, continuing through to the early
era of Motown and R&B covering artists such as The Four Tops, The Temptations and Tavares, just
to name a few.
The Cameos group can trace its roots as far back as 1959, when its originator, Roger “Mr.
Bassman” Del Russo, organized its first members in the city of Newark, N.J., performing first at
high school dances as students and culminating with a 1995 performance at New York’s famous
Carnegie Hall, where they delighted an audience numbering in the thousands, adding later
performances in Atlantic City and the Bahamas, all with Roger at the helm.
Upon his retirement in early 2005, Roger formally named his close friend, nine-year band mate
and Cameo drummer Paul Stuart, as the new leader of The Cameos. Sadly, upon his passing and at
Roger’s request, the group’s name was officially and legally transferred to Paul in July of that year.
In its current rendition, The Cameos consist of five musicians and four singers who blend
together a special mix of smooth perfected vocal harmonies with captivating musical energy to
bring a modern and sophisticated feel to this fabulous music of years gone by.
Musicians include:
Paul Stuart: Leader, drummer, percussionist and vocals.
Cathy Carbone: Tenor saxophone and lead vocals.
Arno Petronzio: Organ, piano, synthesizer, lead and harmony vocals.
Brian O’Connell: Lead and rhythm guitar.
Kenny Cama: Bass guitar and sound technician.
Vocalists include:
Victor Rod: Lead vocals and second tenor harmony (former original Del Monico)
Chris Cerullo: Lead vocals, bass, baritone, second and first tenor harmony.
Danny Ugarte: Lead vocals, bass, baritone, second, first tenor and falsetto harmony.
John Basilone: Lead vocals, baritone, and second tenor harmony
The Cameos are proud to say that they have now added to their resume performances at the
PNC Arts Center, Holmdel, N.J., for an audience of over 7,000 patrons in September 2010, as well
as the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark, N.J. (NJ PAC) in November 2010. The Cameos
have been asked back again for 2011!
The Cameos, of course, continue to perform regularly across the state at private, corporate and
municipal functions, including multiple summer concert series each year.
Always dressed to impress, The Cameos are committed to providing a musical entertainment
experience that will leave a lasting memory with their audience. They maintain that the good times
are still alive and well and can continue to live through the words and melodies of the oldies songs
we all know, love and will never forget!

JAMES BARBOUR starred on Broadway in A Tale of Two Cities (Sydney
Carton), for which he was nominated for Drama Desk, Outer Critics
Circle andDrama League Awards for Best Actor; Carousel (Billy Bigelow);
Jane Eyre (Rochester, Drama League Award Nomination); Beauty And The
Beast (Beast); Urinetown (Lockstock); Assassins (Czolgosz); and Cyrano
The Musical. He was part of the original National Tour of The Secret
Garden and starred as Lancelot in Camelot opposite Jeremy Irons
(Hollywood Bowl) and Michael York (National Tour). He co-starred in
Lewis and Clark Reach the Euphrates (Mark Taper Forum), the world
premiere of 20th Century (Signature Theatre) and has appeared in many other regional and OffBroadway productions, including A Tale of Two Cities at the Asolo Theatre, for which he won the
Sarasota Magazine Award for Best Actor, Back From Broadway (which he also co-produced and for
which he received an LA Weekly Garland Award), and he was nominated for an LA Ovation Award
for The Ghost and Mrs. Muir at the NOHO Arts Center in Los Angeles. Television and film: Alchemy,
Adam Sandler’s Eight Crazy Nights, Ed, Sex In The City, Just Shoot Me, The District, That’s Life, The
Game, Some Enchanted Evening, The American Experience: John And Abigail Adams. His voice can
be heard on the recordings of Jane Eyre, Assassins, Broadway In Concert, The Gift, Frank Wildhorn’s
Dracula, A Gift of Christmas and the upcoming new release, Bring Me Giants/The Romantics. James
most recently completed a sold-out nationwide tour of his Holiday Concert. His production

MATTHEW FRIEDMAN is a singer/composer/multi-instrumentalist
from New York, N.Y. He has played piano since the age of 3 and was singing
even before he could talk. Matthew studied piano and composition with
jazz great David Lalama and electronic music pioneer Herbert Deutsch
(the co-creator of the Moog Synthesizer) at Hofstra University, and is selftaught on guitar and electric bass. Matthew plays and records regularly
with many of Broadway’s finest musicians, and since the summer of 2008
he has been performing on keyboards with Jersey Boys at the August
Wilson Theater in New York City. He also had the honor of accompanying
Billy Joel at the Piano Man’s 2004 wedding. Matthew spent all of 2006 as the “The Piano Man” in
the First National Touring Company of Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp’s Tony Award-winning musical,
Movin’ Out, and played to critical acclaim all over the United States, Canada and Japan. He reprised
the role for the Second and Third National Tours, from 2007 to 2009. Since 2002, Matthew and
the Friedman Brothers Band (with siblings Daniel, Evan and Cary) have performed at several
legendary venues in New York City. Their first album, Cut and Dry, was released in 2003. Matthew
also performs and records with the jazz-fusion instrumental ensemble, The Phibes, directed by
Charles Compo, and is featured on two of their albums, Portable Darkness and Soothing Music of
the Savage Beast. Matthew has written or co-written over 70 songs, and he has twice been selected
as a featured composer as part of the Alternative Torch Songwriters Series at New York’s Symphony
Space Theater. Together with Kyle Martin, he released Stories in Lights, an album featuring both

Mission Statement
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization
dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and
diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service.

The American Cancer Society provides information, day-to-day help and emotional support to
people with cancer and their families. We want to help you get well. And best of all, our help is
FREE. Call us to learn which programs are available in your area.
DAY-TO-DAY HELP
Rides to Treatment: Sometimes getting to cancer treatment is a challenge. If you need a ride to
treatment, we may be able to help.
Lodging During Treatment: If your cancer treatment is far from home and you need a place to
stay, the American Cancer Society may be able to help accommodate you at Hope Lodge.
Personal Cancer Guide: You may want someone to help guide you through your cancer care. An
American Cancer Society patient navigator can help. Call us to learn if there is a patient navigator
in your area.
Hair-loss and Mastectomy Products: Some women use wigs, hats, breast forms and bras to help
cope with the effects of treatment. Our “TLC ” Tender Loving Care® catalog offers these products,
as well as helpful articles. (There may be fees attached to products found in the catalog.)
EMOTIONAL SUPPORT
Breast Cancer Support: Women with breast cancer can talk with a trained Reach to Recovery®
volunteer who is a breast cancer survivor.
Prostate Cancer Support: Men with prostate cancer talk and offer support to each other in Man
to Man® meetings.
Cancer Education Classes: If you and your family have questions about cancer, our I Can Cope®
classes can help. These classes are in many communities as well as online.
Help With Appearance-Related Side Effects of Treatment: Some cancer treatments can affect your
appearance. At a Look Good . . . Feel Better® session, you can learn ways to help with side effects
like hair loss and skin changes. This program is offered jointly by the American Cancer Society, the
Personal Care Products Council Foundation and the National Cosmetology Association.
Online Community: To share stories, blog and talk in an online chat room with other patients and
survivors, visit our Cancer Survivors NetworkSM at www.cancer.org/csn.
