Stained Glass Laylight To Be Restored
Glen Foerd on the
Delaware was awarded a
grant by the Pennsylvania
Historical and Museum
Commission to restore the
mansion's signature
stained glass laylight,
often referred to as a
skylight. The laylight
plaster surround suffered
extensive damage from a
leak that is no longer
active. The grant will help

fund the restoration of the
decorative plasterwork surrounding the fifteen foot domed laylight, the
installation of a new lighting mechanism to restore illumination above the
laylight, and the cleaning of the delicate stained glass. The laylight crowns the
mansion's grand central staircase with a stained glass dome that includes
cherubs, shields, panels and entwined loops in a colorful design. Glen Foerd
will engage the conservation services of Philadelphia-based Materials
Conservation.
There are many beautiful aspects to the mansion, but the grand staircase and
its crowning laylight are the most stunning features. Because of its
significance, the laylight is used as Glen Foerd's logo. (continued page 6)
Community Shares Thoughts on
Glen Foerd’s Future
Glen Foerd on the Delaware and Philadelphia’s Department of Public Property
have partnered with SMP Architects, Viridian Landscape Studio, and
CultureWorks Greater Philadelphia to explore potential adaptive re-use and
programming ideas for Glen Foerd’s buildings, landscapes, and waterfront.
The goal is to identify potential uses and programs in order to maximize the
public value and use of the property and generate revenues for ongoing
maintenance and preservation. Program and use ideas and scenarios will be
connected to Glen Foerd’s mission and history.
As part of this multi-phased process, feedback from the community was
solicited through various means. A public survey, sent last October, provided
good feedback from our most frequent visitors and members. The top words

Greetings from the Director
Dear Friends,
The photos on the following page underscore how fun it was
to bring the 1920s back to Glen Foerd. Many of those
attending Jazz Age on the Delaware were Millenials who had
never been here before. And, of course, they fell in love with
one of the prettiest places in Philadelphia.

This event will be held annually. This year’s goal was not only
to establish a great fundraising event, but more importantly,
to put Glen Foerd on the map. We are often referred to as one
of Philadelphia’s “best kept secrets.” That’s nothing to brag
about when the Glen Foerd relies on the support of members,
donors, foundations, and volunteers. It is absolutely essential
to promote Glen Foerd far and wide. It’s future will only be
secure when many more people support us through their time,
treasure, and talent.
Our next step is not only to sustainably grow Jazz Age on the
Delaware, but to tie the event closely to Glen Foerd’s mission
and our preservation goals. It’s important for those attending
to know why Glen Foerd matters, our future plans, and our
current needs. We want people to not only Jitterbug the day
away, but to know they are contributing to something much
more than a fun day at Glen Foerd.
In the midst of planning for the future, we will continue to
implement innovative programs. The traditional historic
house museum is a largely cerebral and object-based
experience. We want to move beyond the expected by telling
the Glen Foerd story in unexpected ways. Next year we will
unveil temporary art installations by our artists-in-residence.
In addition, we are partnering with a local improv theatre
group, the White Pines Production’s Bright Invention
Ensemble, to develop site-specific theater installations that
involve the audience in bringing history to life.
Please support all the many exciting things happening at Glen
Foerd by joining our membership, or increasing your current
membership level. Thank you for doing your part to secure
Glen Foerd’s future.
Tours Available Friday, Saturday & Sunday
Tours at 11 a.m. & 12:30 p.m.

The Roaring 20s Returns to Glen Foerd
On August 1st, over 900 people came out in their 1920s best to celebrate the elegance of a bygone era. Revelers
danced the day away, enjoyed sumptuous picnic spreads, played croquet and badminton, strolled the river bank,
and sipped on Jazz Age cocktails. There was even a marriage proposal! We couldn’t have dreamed of a more
perfect day. Next year’s event will be held on July 30th. Mark the date! Until then, enjoy a few photos from this
year’s event.
He proposed, and she said yes!

“Punishing the Rebels: A New Look at the Fourteenth Amendment”
Despite many advocates for executions, no rebel hanged for treason after the American Civil War. But this does
not mean that they escaped punishment. Where we’ll find the best articulation of how the United States
punished the rebels is in the Fourteenth Amendment—a device that’s little understood for how it channeled the
cries for vengeance into a document that met the rituals of a democratic legal culture. Join us as Dr. William
Blair, Director of the Richards Civil War Era Center and author of With Malice Toward Some: Treason and
Loyalty in the Civil War Era, reveals why the rebels didn’t hang but how they faced power politics in a
cornerstone amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Located at Holy Family University’s ETC Auditorium.

Laylight Restoration
(continued from page 1)
Visitors are welcome to get a close look at the laylight restoration.
For the first time, the third floor landing, which offers an up close
view of the laylight and decorative plasterwork, will be open to
visitors on select days and times. The restoration work will take
place January through March of 2016, when the mansion is usually
closed to the public. Photos and videos of the work will be
highlighted on Glen Foerd's website and through social media.
The third floor landing and servant’s stairs will be added to the
tour when the mansion reopens in April.
In anticipation of the project, Glen Foerd will have a display about
the laylight during the holidays. The fully restored laylight and
plaster surround will be unveiled when the mansion reopens for
tours in April.
As funds are available, Glen Foerd is systematically restoring
elements of the interior and exterior of the mansion, as well as the
historically significant landscape. Restoration of one of Glen
Foerd's most significant architectural features is an important step
in the continuing preservation of this magnificent estate.
Community Feedback
(continued from page 1)
survey respondents thought best describe why Glen Foerd is special were beautiful, historic, river and peaceful.
High on a list of what most like to see or do were attend events and programs, have access to other historic
buildings, learn more about the site’s history and grounds, and view art installations and exhibits. The top two
things most valued were the historic buildings and waterfront. Ninety-six percent of respondents believe having
more activities at Glen Foerd will have a positive impact. They think having more ways to engage the public
will foster a greater appreciation for Glen Foerd, and that in turn will lead to an increase in attendance,
members, donors and volunteers.
Surveys are just one tool we will use to gather information on how best to ensure a vibrant future for this
magnificent site. A standing room crowd attended the community meeting held on June 15th. After a
presentation on possible uses and programs, the meeting broke into teams. Each team was tasked with outlining
the pros and cons of a specific program scenario and use idea. The teams summarized their discussion to the
entire group.
All of this feedback will inform the final report, which will be used to leverage funding for a feasibility
assessment and full master planning. We look forward to sharing the results.
Garden Lovers
Glen Foerd is starting a garden club to maintain and enhance the gardens around the estate. Benefits of club
membership include at least two visits to area gardens or educational opportunities, such as garden workshops.
Members must commit at least 2 days, or more each month during the warm weather months. If you, or anyone
you know loves gardens, and wish to beautify one of Philadelphia’s prettiest historic sites, then please contact
the office, or email megsharpwalton@glenfoerd.org.
