WWW.VIP-BOOKING.COM VIP- News PREMIUM ›› VOL. 94 ›› AUGUST 2007 McGowan’s Musings: So, following our break, we’re glad to be back with, regrettably some bad news to report initially. The early part of the European summer touring and festival season has had more of its fair share of misfortune. In Germany on June 21 a paramedic was killed by flying debris after 75 mph winds demolished the tent stage at the Southside Festival. Riggers Benno Goldewijk, and Alfredo Pecina Matias died in a fall from The Rolling Stones set at the Vincente Calderon stadium Madrid on June 29, and Neil ‘Nelly’ Bates fell to his death at Bray Studios in Windsor, Berkshire whilst working on the July 21 load-out following The Cure’s pre-tour production rehearsals. All at Vip send their condolences to families and friends. Severe weather beset a large part of the Festival programme, at worst, high winds, torrential rain and floods caused the death at Southside and injuries at the Heineken Jammin’ Festival in Venice, others escaped casualties but as with Glastonbury and Roskilde were turned into seas of mud. In the UK events were cancelled and with those festivals still to take place (as we go to press) like V and Reading, it is literally all hands to the pumps! For some, thankfully, as reported in this News, the sun shone, but with weather patterns changing as they are, organis- Allan McGowan ers are increasingly realising that nothing can be taken for granted in the future. Research has, I am sure, already begun for new precautions and safeguards, insurance arrangements will be looked at very closely by both insurers and promoters, and in some cases this year will be the last. It seems however that festival goers refuse to be put off – T-in the – Park for instance sold all tickets for 2008 a few days after mopping up this year’s event. Perhaps it’s time to move into the rubber boot business – now there’s a branding opportunity! This month’s Musings has a sombre tone and I’m afraid we have one more piece of bad news to report; one of the UK’s major music industry characters, Tony Wilson, passed away on Friday August 10, aged 57. The entrepreneur, who founded Factory records, the label behind New Order and the Happy Mondays, and set up the Hacienda nightclub and the In the City music trade event in Manchester, had been suffering from kidney cancer. He will be missed. 1 VIP-BOOKING.COM Well, in conclusion it is obvious that apart from doing all we can to ensure that we take all aspects of health and safety very seriously in our personal and business lives, we’re never going to completely see off the forces of nature or the Grim Reaper, so let’s just make sure we do the best we can, and enjoy life while we’re at it! In an effort to lighten the mood, I draw your attention to a recent report on the music industry by respected market research company Mintel, which states: ‘Live music is enjoying a renaissance, with record numbers of fans going to concerts. Far from killing live entertainment, the boom in downloading music from the internet also appears to be encouraging ever more people to see their favourite performers in the flesh. The amount of money being spent on live music, which had been in steep decline just a few years ago, has been revived by a combination of new venues, the festivals boom and networking websites such as YouTube, MySpace and Bebo. An estimated £743million (I presume this is UK only) was spent on live music this year in venues ranging from the back room of pubs to the new 90,000-seat Wembley stadium. That represents an eight per cent rise on last year.’ So, there you go - here’s the News! Reports of the purchase price vary between 6 and £8m. The iconic Mean Fiddler was Vince Power’s original club, from which he built the hugely successful Mean Fiddler Group. It was one of the capital’s favourite music venues in the 1980s and 1990s, but the venue closed five years ago and has stood unused ever since. Melvin Benn, formerly MD of MFMG, has formed the new company Festival Republic to further exploit the original Company’s festival assets including Reading and Leeds and the interest in Glastonbury. MAMA did not purchase these and although they are now owners of the Mean Fiddler brand and Web site, through the terms of the deal, the Group cannot use the name for festivals with capacities in excess of 10,000. Festival Republic has indicated that the sum received from MAMA will be invested in plans to extend their festival business to the US. The upcoming Reading and Leeds festivals take place from Aug. 24, with headliners Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins and Razorlight. These will no doubt see The Festival Republic brand given its first airing. The Mama Group, which is listed on the junior Aim market recently purchased the Hammersmith Apollo and the Forum in Kentish Town and owns seven Barfly music venues around Britain, now has the right to trade under the Mean Fiddler name. The sites were sold by Mean Fiddler Group, a business taken private two years ago jointly by US firm Live Nation, the world’s largest live music group, and Irish veteran promoter Denis Desmond, having bought out rival and founder Vince Power for £13m. This year I was amongst the 150,000 who traded wellies for flip-flops, at the Festival International de Benacassim, FIB’07. » Our streets are flooded with humanity, inspiration and rave, Benicassim touches the stars lifted by your youth and hymns of freedom...« - Mayor Francesco Colomer Older comeback acts including Iggy and the Stooges, Devo and Dinosaur Jnr shared the stage with headline indie acts including Arctic Monkeys, Muse and Kings of Leon, with a smattering of local Spanish bands and electro acts, keeping the fiesta going till dawn. is acceptable compensation for 5 days of youthful disruption. The town’s Mayor Francesco Colomer seems to enjoy all that the festival brings to his constituency, his statement- slightly strangely translated, and found stuck to a wall in the town’s tourist information centre- reads like the words of a very tolerant and wise man. “Our streets are flooded with humanity, inspiration and rave, Benicassim touches the stars lifted by your youth and hymns of freedom. It is the universal magic of music, the triumph of life and arts over decadence and tiredness. FIB is a transfusion of tolerance in a world sick of selfishness. Benicassim shares its beat with the world, in days of vanguard and nights of fraternity” The acts at this year event supplemented a long list of musicians that have been en- ticed to the event, due to its reputation of being a fantastically run festival in a great setting, with the clincher of a backstage pool and hospitality area, which easily sets the standard for the European festival circuit. The first time I heard of the now infamous stage side pool was an anecdote on how Belle and Sebastian extended an extensive world tour to return to FIB, purely to dip their toes in the pop ridden pool before and after their performance. As the event has increased with popularity so has its media coverage, evident in the hospitality areas, completely filled with reporters and camera crews performing quick rotation interviews with the weekend’s performers. 800 reporters from 225 different Spanish outlets were in attendance with a further 364 foreign press attendees from 169 outlets. Maybe it was the ever-present lenses that kept the usual rock and roll hospitality area clichés from happening, although last year’s Pete Doherty and Shane MacGowan tag team would definitely be a hard act to follow. Another seamless event occurred between the ocean and mountains this year and with 180 tickets sold on the final day for next year’s event, even without one band confirmed for the line up, 2008 looks set to be another quick sell out. Since 1995 FIB has been transforming the town of Benicassim (near Valencia) into a cultural concoction of arts and music, and now in its 12th year shows no sign of slowing down in diversity or popularity. The local residents -I hope- have got used to the influx of young folk flocking to this usually sedate commuter town of Spain, if not, then I’m sure the 14 million euros input to the local community’s economy Backstagepool at Benicassim The VIP-Booking European Live Entertainment Book Advertising in the VIP Book will make you visible to 10.000 business professionals all over Europe. This year’s edition will take place from September 19-21 and Vip will be co - hosting the area. A face usually more associated with the ILMC will appear on the Popkomm podium when Carl Leighton Pope, MD of The LeightonPope Organisation delivers a keynote speech focussing on the role and the responsibilities of the live industry in the music business at midday on Friday, September 21st. Also the following conference will kick off the event: Live Entertainment – The Culture and Economic Factor This year’s Popkomm opening event in Berlin’s Palais am Funkturm on the 18th September is the conference “Live Entertainment - Culture and Economic Factor”. With support from the Ministry for Economics and Technology together with the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the German Association of the Promotions Industry (idkv) is hosting the event in cooperation with the trade magazine musikmarkt+musikmarkt LIVE! and Popkomm. The conference addresses the three central issues of the branch’s legal framework: the future of reduced tax liability in the light of the European Court of Justice’s ruling, various current tax legislation problems in the branch and artist social security contributions liability when working together with foreign tour producers and in events abroad. In addition to numerous renowned branch experts from all over Europe the association was able to attract European Commission representative Mr. Volker Heydt as well as Secretary of State Dr. Barbara Hendricks from the Federal Ministry of Finance and Secretary of State Heinrich Tiemann from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. The finale of the event will be a debate between MPs from all parties of the German Bundestag, all of whom are either culture or industry politicians. “The event is about compiling suggestions to optimise the framework of live entertainment as the strongest revenue factor in the promotion industry”, Jens Michow, president of the German Association of the Promotions Industry, outlines the conference’s aims. “It’s not about the promoters themselves. In the planning and running of any event there are regularly a whole host of service companies involved. A prospering German promotion branch is a guarantee for thousands of jobs and apprenticeships. And last but not least we are an indispensable motor for the German culture industry. The Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, Minister of State Bernd Neumann, will give the opening speech for the conference.” Following this Secretary of State Dagmar Wöhrl from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Industry will inform the participants of the ministry’s current engagement in the area of creative industries in Germany. In its conferences “Music as an Economy” the German Association of the Promotions Industry (idkv) has already, in 2002 and 2004, dealt with the general conditions of the music business and specifically the promotion industry. With the new conference “Live Entertainment - Culture and Economic Factor” the promoters are underlining the fact that this year’s event focuses exclusively on the legal frame work of the promotion industry. With an annual turnover in excess of three billion Euros the branch has occupied first place in the music business turnover rankings in recent years. A participation fee of €150 (incl. VAT) for the conference applies. Lunch and drinks are included in the price. The bowl itself has been a non-smoking area already since the opening of the arena. Smoking will only be permitted in the sky boxes (70 business boxes, 3 group boxes and 1 business club box) but not on the balconies. Color Line Arena will of course set up various areas for smokers – particularly near the main entrances and on the patios. Color Line Arena has decided to be proactive, before the new law becomes effective on January 1st, 2008. The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) is the annual gathering for the dance music business community But ADE is also an event that attracts the consumers that pay the professional’s wages bringing a club audience of about 65.000 visitors to Amsterdam for the ADE festival. »The festival takes places in around 30 venues...« Per Alexandersson Director Hultsfred Festival Following the sacking of JP Bordahl said to be due to poor ticket sales following this year’s mid June festival Per Alexandersson, currently the manager of Malmö Festival, will be returning to Hultsfred to take over as Director. Alexandersson will start at Hultsfred in the middle of September after completing this edition of the Malmö event. Lennart Beijer, Chairman of the organization Rockparty behind the festival, says that the focus will be to get the festival’s economy back in order and complete next years festival. Alexandersson was one of the founders of Rockparty nearly 26 years ago and without him the festival would not have started in the first place. He also worked with the festival for many years before moving onto other challenges. ADE General Manager Richard Zijlma explains where these masses come from: “Last year 15,000 people came from outside the Netherlands and this year we expect more visitors from abroad, after all where else can you find a city festival providing such a rich and diverse line up of DJ’s/acts performing in one place”. The main essence of the 51 page research report was already expressed in the headline: ‘The Completely Wrong Price’. The Analysts of SES Research prognosticated a price target for CTS of just 19 Euros at a time when the share price was still indicated at 36.28. In a highly critical resume the analysts of SES Research came to a sell conclusion for CTS shares. Immediately after the report was published on July 10 the share came under pressure and dropped below 32 Euro, recovering slightly, hitting the 34 Euro border before dropping again to just 28 Euro at the beginning of August. The share again recovered to 30 Euro but then followed the general negative trend on the stock market caused by the US loan crisis and finally went down to 27.36 Euro. However, although the report starts, “Everything looks so simple...”. What follows is a summary of almost every negative aspect that could affect business development for CTS Eventim. The exclusive deal by CTS with Live Nation expires in mid 2008; also the high profit margins in the CTS ticketing division attracted the interests of competitors. Furthermore SES Research revealed that adjusted figures excluded from ticket sales of the 2006 Championship have appeared in the 2007 first quarter report, putting these results under pressure. The high profit margins in the ticketing division of CTS have in the past been the driving force for the share price. SES Research expects a negative news flow and currently cannot identify potential growth structures for the company. Rather the analysts report concludes that the international expansion plans of CTS Eventim failed, that the ticketing software is not well developed and that may need a cost intensive improvement. SES Research also identifies Ticketmaster, Ticketonline, Ticketcorner and Ticketpro as competitors The analysts checked almost every single aspect of CTS and highlighted even minor details, for instance; that the office building used by most of the staff for which CTS pay a rent of about 400.000 Euros is owned by CEO Klaus Peter Schulenberg. It also reveal that the KPS Concertbüro (Klaus Peter Schulenberg) which promotes 60 to 70 shows per year with acts such as Rolling Stones, Grönemeyer, Take That or The Police in Northern Germany, is not part of the CTS Group. As such SES Research indicates a possible conflict of interests. founder Schulenberg so far was, and still is, the most successful entrepreneur, having been able to bring together some of Germany’s top promoters and impresarios under one company roof. But this report removes something of the promise that normally inspires investors to invest in a company. Since the US loan crisis has hit the market it will become even harder for CTS to retain former share prices of 36 Euro and above. Even if the Company is able as in previous years to maintain the high level of record results, it looks like it won’t be the same. CTS need to revamp its growth story including the reality that the risks are rising. The report shows that the authors of this analysis, Jochen Reichert and Robert Suckel did their homework, and reveals an extensive knowledge of details. This has created a particularly inconvenient summer For CTS. Nevertheless the Company is still the undoubted market leader in the German concert market and CTS Klaus Peter Schulenberg owns the office building where CTS has it’s headquater 6 VIP-BOOKING.COM VIP- News - A u g u s t 2 0 0 7 Ingenious Raise Capital for Live Entertainment Investments Manfred Tari mt@vip-booking.com Ingenious Live VCT has raised exactly £18,485,690 for investments within the live entertainment sector. The fund was launched in November 2006. Ingenious also announced an agreement with The Rival Organisation to co-promote a series of ‘Open air picnic concerts at stately homes in 2008’. Besides the open air events The Rival Organisation intends to realize new concert venues in the UK. In the announcement Duncan Reid, Commercial Director of Ingenious, commented on the agreement: “The Rival Organisation has an established track record of delivering commercially successful open air concerts and we are pleased to support its 2008 summer schedule and the roll out of the format to new venues next year.” In July Ingenious released a press release declaring that it would invest in the ‘Underage’ and ‘Field Day’ music festivals. Ingenious act as co-promoter for these events cooperating with Waxarch Lim- ited, the company that promotes the Underage Club, an exclusive concert series for an under 18 years target group. Reid describes Underage as: “A successful club brand providing entertainment to a significant market not catered for elsewhere. As such, it has significant commercial potential in the live entertainment market and we are confident that Field Day will have similar appeal as already indicated by very strong early ticket sales. There has already been considerable public demand for this summer’s festivals and we anticipate a long term relationship with Waxarch to develop the shows and roll them out to other venues.” bit more than usual. We feel Ingenious will allow us to grow Underage and Field Day organically by giving us the backing and expertise needed to take this out of London and regionally. This is a great partnership.” Tom Baker from Waxarch (and Eat Your Own Ears) said: “We are very excited to be working with Ingenious on these two events; we feel there is a thirst for live music events which don’t just follow the usual obvious programming, and that have a twist. We have tried to be open to booking new acts and mix genres and musical styles a Ingenious is currently the latest example of how the financial markets are able to capitalize the music business. Slightly different than many other private equity investors Ingenious is specialized in music and media.; A perfect candidate for the watch list of corporate companies within the live entertainment industry. Duncan Reid - Director Ingenious Live Nation Reports Half Year Results Manfred Tari mt@vip-booking.com The one and only world wide concert business leader announced results for the second quarter of 2007 (Q2-2007) . The key figures are as always impressive except for the profit results. As revenue Live Nation reported $ 1,04 billion, while the total operating expense was declared with $1,003 billion. The operating income therefore comes down to $36 million, the “normalized income after tax” as reported on Reuters.com to, astonishingly, $4 million. Nevertheless CEO Michael Rapino commented on the results, saying, “Our vision is to build a global live music network that provides touring artists the opportunity to maximize their revenues and expand fan reach all under one aligned platform. We are already a leader in the global concert industry with tremendous fan access and we seek to augment and solidify that position and grow our business by providing artists with the ‘triple play’ of services: + Leadership in global concert promotion and venue services + A one-stop-shop that can provide products and services to artists in-house + Direct sales channel to fans through livenation.com and via our extensive fan database” all websites operated by Live Nation the company estimated a figure of about 11.9 million visitors. The results were released on August 9 after the closing bell rang, from August 10 to 13 the share price rose to $ 22,30 before it slowly went down to $ 20.01on August 16. Even if the profit results remains minimal, Live Nation improved revenue results. In Q2-2006 the turnover was just $768 million. Nevertheless the “normalized income after tax” was $ 9 million. In the current report, entitled “Improved Core Business Despite Softer 2007 Concert Season” Live Nation reported that the online business is “beginning to flourish”. According to Nielsen/Net Ratings the US-websites of Live Nation in June 2007 were visited by 4.1 million unique visitors which was the highest number of visitors ever recorded for this for those sites. Also as part of the bulk deal MAMA has acquired a 75 percent stake in Manto Soho Limited (“MSL”)to which the ‘G-A-Y’ bar and ‘G-A-Y Late’belongs. The Bank of Scotland financed the deal. The price for the acquisition is declared at £6 million and wasbeen paid in cash. In a joint statement Adam Driscoll and Dean James, the Co-Chief Executives of MAMA commented on the acquisition: ”We are delighted that we have been able to acquire the Jazz Cafe, The Borderline, the Garage and the original Mean Fiddler venue businesses through the simpler medium of acquiring Mean Fiddler Holdings Limited. In essence the deal is the same, but this acquisition structure is simpler and quicker than the proposed exercise of our options over the businesses and assets. This will enable us The Borderline Club now owned by MAMA Group to immediately progress the integration of those businesses into our Live Music division, and enables all concerned to avoid the period of uncertainty which would have existed for the customers, suppliers and employees of those businesses while the various conditions were fulfilled.” Preliminary Half Year Results from DEAG Manfred Tari mt@vip-booking.com While CTS suffers a drop in share price DEAG maintain it’s consolidation course. VIP-NEWS VIP- News - A u g u s t 2 0 0 7 G! Festival: The Land of Maybe? Allan McGowan am@vip-booking.com Festivals of one sort or another have of course been with us since pagan times, bringing together people to celebrate anything from the harvest to the appeasement of the weather gods. Music being just the banging of a drum, chanting or something more sophisticated played an integral part. Arts festivals have a fine tradition, but Music Festivals, particularly ‘popular’ music, as we know them used to be isolated events catering only to those interested in the genre, and apart from possible local annoyance at the influx of ‘weird’ people as land. There are 18 islands, one uninhabited, two are home to one family each, and the entire population is 50,000. Torshavn is the smallest capital in the world, home to 19,000 people. See how much I know now?! The G! Festival, the reason for my visit takes place on the beach at Gøta on the island of Eysturoy, where, due to the fact that there are no hotels, I was fortunate enough to enjoy the hospitality of the local mayor and his family. at Woodstock in the 60’s they had little bearing on the overall cultural and economic life of the community. This has changed radically over the past few years, festivals now have a very real impact on the areas, and even the countries in which they take place, contributing to the economy and becoming more and more an integral attraction for the tourist industry - in some cases, as described here, they help to put places on the map for those previously unsure or unaware of their location and way of life: I must admit that until not very long ago I was somewhat vague about the geographical location of The Faroe Islands. I’ve since discovered as I’ve been telling people about my visit to the G! festival, that many people are unsure where the Islands are – guesses included; off the coast of South America, near Portugal, and... Egypt? In fact The Faroes lie in The North Atlantic, halfway between Scotland and Ice- The Faroes were dubbed ‘The Land of Maybe’ by a Scotsman stationed on the islands with the British Army during the Second World War, due to the fact that everything was dependent on the highly unpredictable weather. Even a wedding would ‘maybe take place on Saturday’ dependent on the priest being able to make it from one island to another. All of the international guests and the artists were offered several alternative flights in and out, because ‘maybe’ the planes would not be able to land or take off. But, for this July 1921 sixth edition of the festival founded by the local musician Jón Tyril, the sun shone, and a constant conversation topic was that there had been no rain for at least a couple of weeks. This was very lucky, two weeks later the Faroes other major festival Summarfestivalurin was, like so many others, beset by bad weather, so much so that the Saturday was cancelled. G! Festival 9 VIP-BOOKING.COM VIP- News - A u g u s t 2 0 0 7 Before the event I had one or two misgivings about sending another McGowan to Spain to disport himself in the sun drenched back stage pool at Benicassim (see report in this News), whilst I opted for a meteorologically unpredictable spot in the North Atlantic. However I now know I made the right choice, the Faroes have a very special quality, the scenery, a cross between the Scottish Highlands and Scandinavian glacial regions, and the people are as friendly and hospitable as you’ll meet anywhere. Three days of sightseeing on land and sea, music, partying and fantastic seafood in a land where it never really gets dark did the trick for me! Even the dried pilot whale and blubber served with the drinks was an experience at least! (A school of pilot whales had been beached on the very site of the main festival stage the week before, and in age-old traditional fashion they were killed and shared out amongst the villagers.) The Faroes have a strong musical, and storytelling, tradition and the islands are producing musicians who can definitely hold their own on any international stage. It’s estimated that there are 70 or so bands on the Islands, of these Eivør Pálsdóttir, Teitur Lassen, Lena Anderssen, Boys In A Band and Sic appeared at G! The founding intention of the Festival was to change the whole musical landscape of the Faroes, and to bring wider attention to the area by bringing together leading international musicians as well as local musicians. This year’s line up presented Natasha Bedingfield (UK), Guillemots (UK), Young Dubliners (US), The Dixie Hummingbirds (US), Nephew (DK), Hatesphere (DK), Ser- Peter Smidt from Buma Cultuur, Netherlands and Anna Hildur export Music Iceland ena Maneesh (NO), Adjágas (NO), Polkaholix (DE), Pétur Ben (IS) and Dr. Spock (IS) young people that go abroad to further their education return to The Faroes. The Faroes have a working partnership with Iceland, and G! exchanges acts with Iceland Airwaves. There is a growing collaboration on music export with all the Nordic countries. The local council contributes 350,000 Faroese Krona, about 45,000 Euros to the infrastructure of G! Mourits reckons they get this back as all villagers are entitled to free entry to the festival, 3 day tickets cost 1000 Kr. The Mayor continues, “We want to create a space to be different, the festival does this, it gives a social focus and pride, but also makes people think of the bigger picture. Some were originally against it, now the majority are all convinced, the Council wants to help by creating spaces for music schools etc. This will perhaps attract artists etc who want to live in the area.” »We want to create a space to be different, the festival does this, it gives a social focus and pride, but also makes people think of the bigger picture« - Mourits Foldbo I asked the mayor of this 1,070 strong community, my host, Mourits Foldbo, what the festival meant to Gøta, he told me, “It has been a great benefit in terms of attracting people, it is good for The Faroes and good for Gøta internally. Now the village is known by everybody, and not just for the good fishing. Our people have a strong community spirit and liberal character, although we believe in the philosophy that you must not think you’re too special. (Apparently this is summed up by a Norwegian word, Jante, some of our readers I’m sure will know this).” Mourit’s daughter Katrin has recently returned from spending a year at University in St. Louis, Missouri, US, and says that the younger generation are keen to support the festival, but as usual have their own wish lists as to who should be on the bill. She agrees with her father about the community spirit, and says that many of the Hans Mourits Foldbo mayor of Gøta 10 VIP-BOOKING.COM This desire to bring music as a focus to The Faroes is being taken very seriously as we international visitors were told on a visit to the ancient grass roofed Parliament House in Torshavn. We were also taken to the small island of Nolsoy, where an old fish factory will hopefully be the location of a centre housing recording studios and rehearsal spaces. So, now you know where The Faroes and the G! Festival are, I recommend you pay a visit!
