The remarkable rediscovery of

WAS THE WORLD'S FIRST FILM DIRECTOR A WOMAN?
Barbra Streisand has suggested that Alice Guy Blache was
the inventor of the film director's job. The earliest days of
moviemaking saw many varieties of experimentation, but
Guy Blache may well have been the very first to actually
craft stories on film, fundamentally shaping what it
meant to be a director as the role is defined today.
From 1896 to 1906 Alice Guy was probably the only
woman filmmaker in the world. She had begun as a secre­
tary for inventor, engineer, and motion picture pioneer
Leon Gaumont. who eventually made her head of produc­
tion. She directed and produced almost six hundred silent
films ranging in length from one minute to thirty minutes.
She also directed and produced one hundred and fifty
synchronized sound films for the Gaumont Chronophone.
Her Gaumont silent films are notable for their energy and
risk-taking; her preference for real locations gives the
extant examples of these Gaumont films a surprisingly
contemporary feel.
While the early filmmakers now credited with pioneering
techniques such as D.W. Griffith were just getting started,
Guy-Blache had already opened her own studio, and was
producing a film a week. First located in Flushing, Queens,
the studio then moved to Fort Lee, New Jersey.
One of the first to make a narrative fiction film, Alice Guy Blache experimented
with sound syncing, color tinting, interracial casting and special effects.

SCREENING: MIXED PETS (1911) by Alice Guy Blache
Mixed Pets is an early comedy about misunderstandings
that arise when a new husband refuses to buy his new
wife a dog, and the couples' domestic help conceal their
marriage and baby. The film is enormously funny and
portrays a perceptive grasp of human joys, foibles, and
especially relationships, a Blache trademark. Preserved by
the Women's Film Preservation Fund.
GUEST SPEAKER: TERRY LAWLER - New York Women in Film and Television Executive Director and Women's Film
Preservation Fund Committee Member, Terry is also a Vice President of the Board of Directors of the New York Production
Alliance and serves on the Board of Directors of the Katahdin Foundation. Prior to joining NYWIFT, she was Director of
Development and Production at Women Make Movies and National Director of Film and Videomakers Services at the
American Film Institute. She has been a media consultant for foundations and nonprofit groups, including the MacArthur
Foundation, the Astraea Foundation, the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Goethe Institute.
MODERATOR: KIMBERLY SKYRME - Kimberly is a Casting Director and film Producer. Some of her credits include the
