The ALTRUM division comes
under new management with
Don Zupec, a nine-year veteran
of AMSOIL INC.

in his position as Technical Services manager, a
position he retains in addition to his new role as
ALTRUM manager.

As manager of Technical Services, Zupec oversees
a group of technical services representatives and
a technical services coordinator. He has extensive
experience in working with Dealers and the Dealer
network, as well as customer support. “My team
provides technical guidance on AMSOIL products
and their intended applications to AMSOIL Dealers
and customers, Zupec said. He also supports Oil
Analyzers Inc.
Zupec brings a fresh perspective to his new position.
“I am interested in the ALTRUM business for many
reasons,” Zupec said. “I have taken personal
interest in supplements, and have been taking a
number of ALTRUM supplements for the past eight
years. I have seen the benefits of using ALTRUM
supplements and know they have helped improve
my overall health.”
Zupec has never liked visits to the doctor and,
especially in recent years, has paid attention to his
overall health. “This has resulted in me becoming
more educated about nutrition and supplements,
and the importance of both,” Zupec said. “Being
able to have some influence and direction regarding
the ALTRUM business is exciting, and I am looking
forward to working with this great product line.”
Zupec has plans for ALTRUM supplements. “The
ALTRUM products are high quality, which will remain
a focus going forward,” he said. “In addition, we
will continue to evaluate our product line so that
we are meeting the demands of our Dealers and
customers.”

Exercise, Diet Can Help
Relieve Knee Pain
Chronic knee pain is a common complaint for people as
they age, especially for those who are 65 and older. A
British study in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism found
that nearly two-thirds of women aged 50 and older
experienced persistent, incident-, or intermittent knee
pain. And in the United States, approximately 25 percent
of women and 16.5 percent of men older than 70 report
having knee pain, according to a paper in the December
2011 Annals of Internal Medicine.
With every step, gravity takes a toll on the knees,
according to Joel Press, MD, medical director of
the Spine and Sports Rehabilitation Center at the
Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. The older people are,
the longer their knees have been subjected to the wear
and tear of daily activity.
Stay Healthy and Strong to Avoid Knee Problems
Research has shown that knee pain can be prevented
by weight loss and exercise. In one study, authors found
that overweight people with knee pain or damage
enjoyed decreased disability after losing 5 percent
of their weight — just nine pounds if you weigh 180
pounds — over a period of four months. There’s also
strong evidence supporting land-based exercises, such
as strength training or walking, for knee problems.
According to a recent study, exercise reduced knee pain
and helped participants move around more easily.
Overall, exercise is good for joints, according to Dr.
Nicholas DiNubile, an orthopaedic surgeon specializing
in sports medicine. Nubile answered questions about
the impact of exercise on knee joints in an article on the
Healthline website. (www.healthline.com)
He recommends lower-impact, aerobic-type activities
such as walking, cycling, elliptical training or water-based
exercises.
Nutrients That Can Help Reduce Knee Pain
According to research published in Nutrition Research,
a diet rich in fruits and vegetables has been shown
to help reduce inflammation and discomfort in the
joints. Inflammation produces free radicals, the celldamaging molecules that are formed in response to
toxins and natural bodily processes. The synovium,
the cushion between knee joints, is as prone to freeradical damage as the skin, eyes, or any other body
tissue. Antioxidants protect the body from free radicals.
Research published in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences and Clinical Rheumatology reveals
that certain antioxidants may help prevent arthritis, slow
its progression, and relieve pain.*

These Foods Can Help With
Knee, Joint Problems
Antioxidants
The antioxidant vitamin C is necessary for cartilage
development. A lack of vitamin C can lead to weakened
cartilage and increase symptoms of knee and joint
problems. Vitamin C-rich foods include tropical fruits
such as papaya, guava and pineapple; citrus fruits such
as oranges and grapefruit; cantaloupe, strawberries, kiwi,
raspberries; cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower,
broccoli and kale; bell peppers and tomatoes.
Studies show that vitamin D can help with discomfort in
knees and joints. Vitamin D-rich foods include seafood,
such as wild-caught salmon, cod, sardines and shrimp;
fortified milk and eggs.
Beta-carotene is another powerful antioxidant that helps
destroy free radicals before they can cause excessive
damage to joints. Beta-carotene is easy to identify
because it gives fruits and vegetables, such as carrots,
their bright orange color. Other excellent sources include:
cruciferous veggies like kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli;
collard greens, mustard greens, chard; sweet potatoes,
winter squash, cantaloupe; Romaine lettuce, spinach,
parsley, apricots, peppermint leaves, tomatoes and
asparagus.
omega-3s actually work to decrease inflammation by
suppressing the production of cytokines and enzymes
that break down cartilage.
Foods with the highest amount of omega-3 fatty acids
are- salmon (wild, fresh or canned), herring, mackerel (not
king), sardines, anchovies, rainbow trout, Pacific oysters,
omega-3-fortified eggs, flaxseed (ground and oil) and
walnuts.
Spices
Some spices have anti-inflammatory effects, too. Among
the most promising are ginger and turmeric. Grate fresh
ginger into stir fries, add to salad dressings, sip ginger tea
and add to high-fiber, low-fat muffins.
Turmeric (sometimes called curcumin) is a mustard-yellow
spice from Asia that’s the main ingredient in yellow
curry. Scientific studies cited in the Journal of Natural
Products have shown that turmeric may help suppress
inflammatory body chemicals.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
The healthiest fats for people with any problems with
excess inflammation are omega-3 fatty acids.* While
some foods increase levels of inflammation in the body,

“manufacture date” rather than an “expiration date.”
