COMPETITIVE FEATURE BENEFITS
The following is a fact-based* comparison of XENOLITE NO-LEAD versus other lead-free aprons in the USA.
These competitive aprons are all based on tin or tin-antimony attenuating materials, whereas XENOLITE NO-LEAD
is a scientifically balanced, proprietary, patented mixture of two complementary attenuating elements providing
lighter weight and better protection.
•XENOLITE NO-LEAD is the world's lightest-weight apron material when compared at equal protection (80 kV-120 kV).
•Tin-based competitive materials are 15 to 30% heavier for the same protection.
•XENOLITE NO-LEAD delivers and guarantees its stated mm Pb protection at 100 kV. Most tin-based products are
designed and tested at only 80 kV which is their peak protection. They do not provide the stated/label protection
at 100 kV where there is two to three times greater transmission and exposure than at 80 kV.
•XENOLITE NO-LEAD is the only lead-free material in the USA which meets the tough new IEC world standard for
apron protection (IEC 61331-3/1) at both the 80 kV & 100 kV test levels, with 0.15/0.25 mID Cu filtration.
•Several scientific papers have been written about the XENOLITE NO-LEAD innovative technology. It has been tested
and approved by hospitals and government agencies in over 10 countries, complying with DIN, JIS and CE marking
EC requirements. Copies of test data are available on request.
•At the high kV of some: special procedures(120 kV) the tin-based competitors lose over 20% of their protection. They
are well below 0.40 mm Pb. This means a 70% higher exposure. XENOLITE NO-LEAD provides the most consistent
protection over the range 60 kV-125 kV and has up to 20% lower transmissions.
•Beware of aprons with labels that do not show protection as mm Pb but only as % attenuation. They may be
disguising true protection values. One apron states “> 84% attenuation at 100 kV”. This means 16% is getting
through, two to three times more exposure than XENOLITE NO-LEAD's 0.50 mm Pb apron and almost double
its 0.35 mm Pb apron.
•XENOLITE NO-LEAD is the only truly recyclable material and it is re-used to make new aprons. Alternatively, it can be
incinerated or safety disposed of in municipal landfills as a non-hazardous waste. It contains no toxic heavy metals.
•XENOLITE NO-LEAD is latex-free and does not use plasticized PVC/vinyl. PVC/vinyl contains both chlorinated
hydrocarbons (a toxic hazard when incinerated) and phthalate plasticizers (a group of compounds in which
several are banned due to toxicity).

The most important and effective means of
reducing scatter radiation, which considerably
impairs image quality because of inadequate
contrast reproduction, is the scatter grid. The
MAVIG range of grids, based on the outstanding Lysholm products, provides considerable
improvement in the quality of your X-rays.

The "history" of the scatter grids in brief:
Soon after the discovery of X-rays by
Wilhelm Röntgen, the deterioration of
the image caused by scatter radiation
emanating from the object being
X-rayed, became a topic for discussion.
Various attempts to neutralize this negative effect failed, until, in 1913, in
Berlin,Gustav Bucky introduced the first
scatter grid. It consisted of lead strips.
The Lysholm company began the tradition of grid manufacturing in a small
workshop in Stockholm in 1922. In 1926,
Dr. Erik Lysholm presented a further improvement of the original Bucky grid at
the Karolinska Hospital. The breakthrough came in 1930. In cooperation
with the Royal Institute of Technology, in
Stockholm, Lysholm developed an absolutely symmetrical and dimensionally
stable grid. These properties continue
to characterize the Lysholm grid today.
The effect of scatter grids is based on their directional effect. Scatter radiation is emitted at a
different angle than the primary radiation beam
and is absorbed by the very fine lead strips. The
primary radiation beam, which runs in the direction of the strips, passes through with minimum
absorption. The quality of a grid depends to a
large degree on the choice of interspacing
materials. MAVIG uses only the highest quality
aluminium medium between the lead strips
allowing the primary radiation to pass through
the grid essentially unweakened.
The grid surfaces protecting the lead strips and
interspacing materials are also important to quality. Inadequate designs can result in unwanted
weakening of the primary radiation beam or
not adequately protecting the delicate "insides"
of the grid. Our grids provide ideal protection
against mechanical damage and the penetration of moisture, while ensuring excellent image
quality.
Focused grids
Focused grids produce highly effective scatter
absorption. The absorbing lead strips are inclined
in such a way that the divergent primary radiation
can pass between the strips. Focusing means
that the inclination of the lead strips corresponds
to the divergence of the primary radiation at a
defined distance. A focused grid thus becomes
ineffective when out of focus (wrong distance
to the focus) or out of center (focus not in the
plane of the center strip). Therefore, when deciding to purchase a grid, it is important to consider whether the corresponding X-ray technology
can meet the strict requirements for centering
and focusing. For X-rays taken at the patient's
bedside or at accident worksites, as a rule, parallel grids are used as described below.
Parallel grids
Parallel grids are used when the X-ray technology
cannot guarantee the stringent requirements of
focused grids requiring precise centering and
focusing, e.g. X-rays taken at the patient's bedside or in the accident ward. Here, most of the
grids are parallel in design: the absorber strips
are not inclined making the importance of the
exact focusing of the central beam no longer
important.
Interspacer, number of lines
The characteristics of a scatter grid also depend
on the following variables:

thickness of the lead strips
thickness of the interspacing material
no. of lines per cm
These characteristics determine the parameters
which define the final grid design: ratio (height
of lead strips versus distance between each
strip) and lines/cm (number of lines per cm).
Line progression
Standard line progression is parallel to the longitudinal side of the grid. On request, so-called
"cross lamella" grids can be supplied, i.e. with
line progression parallel to the narrow side of
the grid.
Insert grid
MAVIG insert grids fit all commercially available
grid cassettes. Standard film formats are stated
in the overview table. Special formats are gladly
supplied on request.

The tunnel grid (grid bridge) design offers the

FLUID WARMING CABINETS These are
designed for use in theatres (urology,
ENT, plastic surgery, cardiac, eye, day
surgery) IVF, CAPD, dermatology, A&E,
X-Ray and other areas where fluids,
lotions or contrast media need to be kept
warm or at body temperature.
It is considered good practice to warm
fluids prior to use as this helps maintain
patient temperature, especially in critical
areas such as Theatres, ITU and A&E.
DESCRIPTION
These cabinets will give long & trouble-free
life in normal use. They are fitted with a digital
or dial temperature controller & over-temperature
safety cutout for product protection. Adjustable
Model GP75W
wire shelves allow free air movement around the
stored bottles to guarantee better temperature
stability. Flat shelves are also available if warming small bottles and bags. Special baskets are
recommended when storing bags of fluid ince they can be stored and accessed easier; also
there is no risk of the outer pouch wrapper slowing the movement of air round the cabinet
and impairing the temperature stability or control.
The outer cabinets are made from sheet steel finished in
easy-clean grey stove powder paint; stainless steel exterior
cabinets are a standard option. Stainless steel chambers are
more hygienic and durable, and offer excellent protection from
rust and corrosion. All models have an internal fan giving you
optimum control and faster warm-up times. Models GP150W
& larger are fitted with a door handle rather than a finger pull.
All models can be fitted with a
glazed viewing panel in the door
and we are able to manufacture
to non-standard specifications
and dimensions if necessary.
