Montecito Union School After School Program Spring 2013 A MESSAGE FROM AFTER SCHOOL COORDINATOR LORYN HODOSY March 2013 Dear Montecito Union School Families, Spring is upon us and summer won’t be far behind. It’s time for us to get outside and enjoy the beautiful Santa Barbara weather and that is just what 8 of the upcoming After School classes will allow you to do. We will be offering Spring in the garden, Yoga on the lawn, Bug Club, Cheerleading and Wanna Be Fit on the Terraces, as well as Soccer, Basketball and Team Volleyball too. The upcoming Spring Session begins the week of April 8th. As you read through the course descriptions, you will Mind that most of our popular classes have been continued. You will also Mind that 8 NEW classes have been added to our curriculum. I am extremely excited about these courses and hope the children feel the same. The pathway structure developed by the After School Task Force last year has been continued and includes multiple classes that students can choose based on their varied interests. The Arts Path allows students to explore art, dance, drama and music. The Extended Learning Path is an opportunity to further engage in courses that reinforce and extend knowledge and skills developed throughout the school day. The Health and Wellness Path includes opportunities for physical activity and developing healthy habits through sports and wellness courses. I hope that you explore these carefully chosen course offerings with the goal of Minding something your child Minds fun and engaging. MUS Spring Course Descriptions Academic Chess Students are taught chess through a fun method that utilizes stories, dances and catchy songs to make the game exciting and easy to understand. This wonderful learning opportunity not only teaches students how to play, but also enhances their thought processes by developing critical thinking and problem-‐solving skills. Through the use of theatre games, improv exercises and performance time in front of classmates, students will gain a love of self-‐expression, story, character development and movement. They will be introduced to a theatrical vocabulary, voice and speech skills, elements of story-‐making, and the importance of collaboration and ensemble. Most importantly, students will engage in lots of fun and imagination! Sarah Thomas studied Theatre at Yale University and holds a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Washington. She has acted professionally, both regionally and locally. Sarah has taught drama classes at Cold Springs School for the last two years and is a mom of three daughters. Learn to draw, paint, collage and sculpt your way through a rich array of creative art projects. Stretch your imagination by experiencing different art styles and cultural art from all over the world. Be inspired by great artists and learn techniques of art, design and perspective. Students use artist quality media such as oil and soft pastels, charcoal, PRISMA illustration markers, fabric pens, colored pencils, Aqua Stiks, clay, foil, watercolor and Bio-‐color paints on a variety of surfaces: paper, metal, wood and canvas. The Skills Program is designed to teach children the fundamentals of basketball such as dribbling, passing and shooting while learning the rules of the game. Coach Julian Lopez will keep the players working hard while having fun. Would you like to create your own games and interactive stories? Using Scratch, a programming language developed at MIT, students will learn the basics of computer programming. Whether it's a game or an interactive birthday card, Scratch’s building-‐block way of programming will make it easy for anyone to create their own projects which can then be shared on the Scratch website and/or with your friends and family. Wednesdays (3-‐6) 3:15-‐4:15 $120.00 Location: Computer Lab Bug Club NEW! Get hands-‐on with insects and other cool critters as the MUS campus comes alive with spring. Join the staff from the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and meet live ladybugs, caterpillars, worms, snails and more. Learn about life cycles and adaptations and make cool bug crafts to take home. No bones about it, these are some of the coolest creatures around! The students will then create handmade ceramic eggs and birds to Mill the nest. Next, they will make a clay birdhouse and if time permits, they will also make clay bugs with leaves for them to sit on, to accompany their newly hatched ceramic bird family. Instructor Judith Geiger is a nationally recognized professional artist who is the art assistant for the art classes here at MUS. We have spirit, yes we do, we have spirit, how about you? For anyone who wants to learn or perfect the foundations of cheering, this fun-‐Milled class will practice cheer, motions, sidelines & stunts. Learn how to “hit the audience” and cheer with megaphones and signs. Create routines and perform with pom-‐poms, then get into character and cheer in an End-‐of-‐Session performance. Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment. An experienced instructor will challenge new and returning students to engineer at the next level. Thursdays (2-‐6) 3:00-‐4:15 $150.00 Location: Room 34 Hip Hop Bust a move!!! Students will hip-‐hop their way through a high energy dance routine set to pop and hip-‐hop tunes. Each class will include a short warm up and stretch then move onto technique and choreography, plus freestyle time. Parents will be treated to a short performance at the end of the Minal class (props and partial costumes provided). Credentialed teacher Angela Del Deo will focus on reinforcing key mathematical concepts and facts that are crucial to a student’s success. Students will have the opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills related to math and practice important strategies that will help them grow as successful math students, while having fun in the process! Do you have no idea what Minecraft is but like exploring and building? We want you in our class. Each of us will work on creating our own model of our home, school and community while learning and sharing skills and techniques we have discovered in the virtual world of Minecraft. This class is designed to support core curriculum reading readiness through engaging activities including phonemic awareness, sight words, Mluency and comprehension. Students will be challenged and inspired through activities incorporating kinesthetics, drama and puppetry. Tuesdays (K-‐1) 2:30-‐3:15 $110.00 Location: Room 34 Sing Out Loud NEW! Ignite your child’s passion for music in this hands on, fun-filled and exciting class! The main goal of this course is to enrich the students’ musical education and to broaden their vocal horizon as a preparation for chorus and other opportunities in years to come. Students of all ability levels will learn songs from various musicals culminating in a performance for the parents on the last day of class! Instructor Christina Buchanan, an MUS alumni, is currently a Madrigal singer at SB High School with years of theatrical experience and classical vocal training. Wednesdays (2-‐3) 3:15-‐4:15 $120.00 Location: Auditorium Soccer Skils NEW! Students will participate in Soccer Skill building twice a week for 8 weeks. This Skills program is designed to teach children the fundamentals of soccer such as dribbling, passing, trapping, heading and shooting while learning the rules of the game. Coach Jeff Johnson, who coached the Santa Barbara High School girl’s team to victory, will keep the players working hard while having fun. Each student will receive a wooden planter box to paint and plant throughout the session. They will grow springtime Mlowers and seasonal vegetables plus; learn about the growing cycle, composting and worm bins, proper care and watering of plants and much more. Coach Paige Craine (Mrs. Craine’s daughter is an experienced High School, Club and College player) will teach the students the fundamentals of serving, passing, setting and hitting in a fun and team-‐building environment. We wanna make Mitness fun! Be active! Be healthy! Be strong! And be smiling from start to Minish. Compete in wacky relays, jump through hoops and play “Mit fun” games. Our sports conditioning circuits will strengthen your muscles and your heart. Each week you will compete against your classmates for the “Wanna Be Fit” title. You will also learn the major muscle groups and expand your knowledge on everything from your triceps to your hamstrings. Join Instructional Assistant Alisa Lopez as she teaches the students how to weave lanyards, bracelets, dream catchers and a whole lot more. Students will be developing their Mine motor skills as well as expanding their creativity. Thursdays (K-1) 2:30-3:15 $110.00 (2-6) 3:15-4:15 $120.00 Location: TBD Yoga Groove Come bend, twist and stretch in this creative combination of Yoga poses mixed with Pilates and dance. The course is taught by Angela Del Deo, a certified teacher and yoga instructor. This class will offer the children the fundamentals of breathing work, yoga poses, stretching, rhythm and movement. Mini yogis will have an opportunity to increase strength, balance, fine motor skills, flexibility and concentration. Through games, stories and music students are introduced to the joy of yoga. Mondays (K-‐1) 2:30-‐3:15 $95.00 (2-6) 3:15-4:15 $105.00 Location: Auditorium/Big Toy Lawn (7-‐Week Course: No class 5/27) Important Information About After School Courses • Classes start Monday, April 8th and run through the end of May (School is closed Monday, May 27th). Sign-‐ups are from Monday, March 18th – Friday, April 5th . This year, you can pay online through PayPal or return the registraFon form to the front office with your payment made out to MUS AJer School Program. No registra+ons will be processed without payment. • • Sign-‐ups will be based on a loLery system if the class exceeds the maximum amount of students. If there are more students signed up than the maximum space, a second class will be considered. • A class may be cancelled if the minimum enrollment is not met. If this is the case, you will be noFfied ASAP and registraFon fees will be refunded. • Class lists will be posted by Friday, April 5th and you will be contacted through email by Loryn Hodosy. • Sports classes will be cancelled in inclement weather or when the fields are too wet. Please call the school to confirm if the class has been cancelled. To register and pay for classes using PayPal: • Go to the MUS homepage, click on the Programs tab and scroll down to AJer School Program. • Click on the PayPal RegistraFon link to the leJ. • Once you are on the Course Pathway Grid, use the drop-‐down menu to select the class appropriate to your child’s age and release Fme. • Click the “Add to Cart” buLon that corresponds to the class you have chosen. • This will take you to the PayPal website where you can complete your payment informaFon. *If using PayPal to pay and register for courses, you need to print and sign the Registra+on Form and return it to the front office.
