VFI Technical Notes
VFI Sensors reliably monitor VFDs. Here’s how.
Variable frequency drives (VFDs)
control motor speed and are
indispensable to modern HVAC
systems. VFDs rectify AC power to DC
in order to produce simulated AC
power. The output is a distorted sine
wave that cannot be accurately
measured by typical current sensors.
Most current transducers on the
market are the average responding
type. They monitor average peak
current and divide by 1.414 (√2) to
obtain the amperage value, assuming a
smooth sine wave. This works well for
constant speed loads.

Variable
Frequency
Integration
for VFDs
The output waveform of a typical
VFD, however, is highly distorted in
comparison to a pure sine wave. The
simulated wave can have much higher
peaks, with relative sizes that change
with output frequency. An average
responding transducer could be
accurate at 20 Hz, but 20% high at
30Hz, and 20% low at 40Hz. Average
responding transducers simply cannot
provide an accurate measurement of
these distorted waveforms.
We have introduced an
exclusive Variable Frequency
Integration (VFI™) technology
specifically to address this problem.
It accurately measures the current of a
VFD controlled motor at any speed.
These sensors with VFI™ are
tuned to measure the current peaks
produced by variable torque VFDs
commonly found in HVAC systems.
They employ a proprietary
mathematical algorithm that integrates
the current over time. Electrical
engineers call this the “true heating
value” of the complex waveform.
PLANT OPTIMIZATION Technical Notes
Saving Energy in Central Plants
Chiller Plants have many complex,
inter-related pieces of equipment that
together use up to 50% of a building’s
energy. Changing the operation of one
machine affects all the others. For
example, a lower condenser water set
point increases chiller efficiency but
Cooling
Tower
75 A
increases tower fan power load. On
the other hand, a higher chilled water
set point will cut chiller and tower
energy but increase VAV Air Handler
fan power load. It is difficult to
determine the best strategy to achieve
best energy efficiency overall.

Benefits: This system allows
building operators to experiment with
their systems under different weather
and load conditions. Using current
transducers, whose cost is one-tenth
that of kW transducers, is the most
economical way to measure plant
energy. The current transducers also
double as status indicators, further
reducing costs.

SENTRY “Smart” 500 Series
Self-Calibrating Current Operated Switches
The Sentry 500 Series Current Switches
monitor up to 150 amps AC and provide
an auto-setting AC/DC switch configured
either for “over/under” monitoring or for
underload monitoring. They offer proven
reliability and solid performance in both
solid core and split core configurations.
FEATURES
Fastest Installation
Simply run the monitored conductor through the aperture, connect
wires to the switch contacts, and walk away. Automatically selfcalibrates on initial startup. Easily clear and reset if the application
changes. Self-powered for additional savings in wire and time.
Flexibility
The “over/under” configuration trips with either a 15% underload or
a 15% overload. The “underload” configuration trips only when current
falls 15% below the operating load. The split core version simplifies
retrofits.
Reliability
Neilsen-Kuljian current switches have been field-proven in hundreds of
thousands of installations since 1982. Solid performance even in
rooftop environments. Backed by five-year warranty.

PowerBASE + Sentry = Reliablity
Energy Management System digital outputs
generally can’t “pull in” a motor starter directly.
That normally requires an interposing relay.
The PowerBASE is an interposing relay that
easily connects to Sentry sensors. Most
electricians consider a sensor/PowerBASE
combo to be a single installed item and charge
accordingly. Its compact size makes it an easy fit
in crowded motor starter enclosures, eliminating
the need for expensive relay panels.
The PowerBASE provides good control, isolation
and lower cost.

SENTRY KW2000 and
KWN2000 Series
AutoPhase kW/kWh Transducers
The KW2000 Power Transducers provide an analog output signal
proportional to power demand (kW), plus a pulsed output for
totalizing energy consumption (kWh). The KWN2000 Series
Tranducers connect directly to either a Johnson Controls Metasys®
N2 network or a Modbus network. The KWN2000 units provide
values for kW/kWh plus several other power quality parameters.
FEATURES
Accurate
Advanced microprocessor running at 5
MIPS provides high-speed sampling, true
RMS calculations and meter grade digital
accuracy (0.5% full scale).
Fast Installation
Patented AutoPhase Technology corrects
common wiring errors such as CT reversal
and phase mismatch, and can save hours of
field labor.
Input Flexibility
Accepts Neilsen-Kuljian ProteCT 0.333V
safe CTs, eliminating the need for shorting
blocks. Also accepts traditional 5A CTs. No
separate potential transformers (voltage
transformers) are required for monitoring up
to 600VAC.
Network Integration
The network versions are designed for
direct connection to a network bus. Models
are available for Johnson Controls Metasys®
N2 networks and Modbus networks.

Fan and Pump Status
Reliable, Economical Electronic Fan and Pump Status
Concept: When fans or pumps are
moving air or water, they draw a typical
amperage load. If the belt or coupling
breaks, the amperage drops to about
half of the normal load. Use a Sentry
Sensor and your automation system to
monitor this change.
Benefits: Solid-state Sentry
sensors won’t wear out or drift like
electromechanical pressure switches,
resulting in fewer callbacks. Less
conduit means less electrician time.
And no pipe taps means less pipefitter
time and the elimination of a potential
leak source.
Select the right sensor
for your project:
❙❙ Sentry 500 SmartSensors™ calibrate
themselves automatically. (p. 8)
❙❙ Sentry 250 Switches require a few
turns of a potentiometer and a glance
at the SmartLED™ (p. 10).
❙❙ Sentry transducers provide an analog
output signal, allowing for software
alarm set points and real time current
monitoring. (pp. 4–7).
