Sheriff Lee Baca Swears in New Deputies

the swearing in of the 5 recruits
last Saturday June 9, 2012. S/
R Chief Gary A. Nalbandian
made an announcement before
the commencement exercises
that they were there to celebrate
another special occasion for
their humble and energetic
leader Sheriff Lee Baca's birthday. He started by saying, "It is
rare in life that we meet people
who say what they mean and
mean what they say. Our honoree is a man of courage, a man
of ethics, a man of integrity and
a man of resolve.
He is gifted by God with a
zealous nature and creative
mind that seeks the best in
people and finds solutions to
complex situations. Being very
close to the sheriff and someone who values his friendship,
I am qualified to say that I understand what makes him happy.
The members of the Homeland
Security Support Unit and I
chose to give you a surprise for
your birthday that we know you
value and appreciate more than
words can describe." Then

as regular and reserve deputies
for Los Angeles County.

Chief Nalbandian ended his
speech by saying, "The Los
Angeles County Sheriff's Department stands on the principle
of tolerance, equality and religious freedom. We look towards the vision of peace, justice and truth. To have peace
you need justice to have justice
you need truth and the truth is
our department is and will always be a family for different
ethnic groups. Thank you
sheriff for giving us the opportunity to be a part of the largest
and most respected sheriff's
department in the United
States."
After Chief Nalbandian's
speech, Sheriff Lee Baca
started the commencement exercises for the swearing in of
the 5 recruits, followed by a
fabulous dinner attended by

the commencement speech inspired the graduates to further
their education and lead a successful career, without ever forgetting to uphold their noble

as law enforcement officers.

praised Chief Nalbandian's leadership, energy and vision in uniting and partnering with the diverse community in Los Angeles County.

Chief's ceremonies said,Chief
Nalbandian is an amazing man
who runs a business in Glendora
and has devoted most of his life
to the Sheriff's department using his own money and time.
Sheriff Baca and Chief
Nalbandian have put together a
valuable team of men who are
bi-lingual, who speak Arabic,
Armenian, and Farsi. This could
be a very valuable resource for
Los Angeles County's future in
fighting crime.

Helping Hands Volunteers Help Kaiser

Center Employees with their Projects

COVINA - The East San
Gabriel Valley Republican
Women Federated (ESGVRWF)
recently purchased and donated
a commercial laundry cart to the
Baldwin Park Animal Care Shelter located at 4275 Elton Street,
Baldwin Park, California 91706.
Shelter staff had requested
the laundry cart to keep wet
blankets and towels off the laundry room floor while they are
being laundered for use with the
animals.
ESGVRWF members bring
newspapers, towels, blankets,
animal toys, pet food, and other
items listed on the Baldwin Park
Animal Care Shelter's "wish list"
as one of the group's Caring for
America Projects. Whenever
shelter staff indicates a specific
item would help, ESGVRWF
makes a special effort to address that need. Recent "specific
donations" included buying
plastic containers for storing
small animal food and ceramic
bowls for rabbits, and formula
for preemie kittens. The purchase of a second cart to be
used to transport sick and
wounded animals is planned.
The Baldwin Park Animal
Shelter is one of four "Caring
for
America"
projects
ESGVRWF Club member's
support. The remaining three
projects include support for the
Wounded Warrior Project; providing books to K-8 children to
take home and supporting
fundraising programs at Potrero
School in El Monte; and pro-
viding stuffed animals to the El
Monte Police Department to
give to children when answering domestic violence calls.
Republican Women Federated "Caring for America
projects" are based on the belief that problems are most effectively solved through the
generosity and combined energies of individuals than through
dependency on government programs. All funding for these
projects is donated by
ESGVRWF members.

BALDWIN PARK - Over
50 Kaiser Permanente
Baldwin Park Medical Center
employees lent a hand last Saturday, June 2, by participating
in "Helping Hands Volunteer
Day," an activity that included
two community service
projects in the San Gabriel
Valley.
"We were excited to take
part in this community outreach," says Reyna Del Haro,
director, Public Affairs, Kaiser
Permanente Baldwin Park
Medical Center. "At Kaiser
Permanente, we have many
employees who volunteer on a
regular basis for events that
benefit the community because they simply want to help
others. Our appreciation goes
out to all of our staff that is
making a difference in our local communities by volunteering their time and heart last
Saturday."
Both of the "Helping Hands"
The San Gabriel Valley
Examiner
projects were located in the
San Gabriel Valley and took
place simultaneously. Volunteers assisted with projects including painting, cleaning,
decorating, and gardening. The
two sites included: Parents'
Place Family Resource &
Empowerment Center in West
Covina and a residential home
for boys in Covina operated by
the San Gabriel Children's
Center.
Additionally, volunteers from
Kaiser facilities maintenance
department not only created a
new produce garden for boys
to enjoy at the residential
home, but they also taught children volunteers how to garden
and stressed the importance of
eating fresh fruits and vegetables.
The center serves families
with children with special
needs, by making the offices
more pleasing to the eye as
families walk in to use the center. "It will give them a sense
of peace and tranquility," explains Karen Nutt, director,
Parents' Place Family Resource and Empowerment
Center. "We have warm and
friendly staff, now we have a
beautiful environment for the
families to enjoy. Thanks to the
volunteers from Kaiser
Permanente Baldwin Park.
We appreciate all they have
done for us so we in turn can
help our families."
"The employees at Kaiser
Permanente continue to assist
San Gabriel Children's Center
in such a supportive and caring manner. They have dedicated their time, efforts, and
resources to a group of clients
that haven't had much hope in
their lives. "They recognize that
their time and effort could be
spent anywhere, but they are
so grateful that they have chosen to help our clients," says
Porfirio "Pete" Rincon, CEO,
San Gabriel Children's Center.

Olmec Head Placed at Jalapa Park

COVINA - The Olmec Head
has been the center of controversy lately when the statue
(you could say) was to be
placed at Jalapa Park in Covina.
Councilman Bob Low led the
charge "not" to have it placed
in the park and wanted it placed
at the Covina Library, but lost
that battle.
As a result, he boycotted the
ceremony and celebration for
the placement of the Olmec
Head last June 8th.
However, the event was
nicely attended which included
Delia Nevarez, a member of the
U.S. Mexican Sister Cities Association and LULAC. Also attending were representatives
from Jalapa and officials from
the Mexican Consulate
General's office in Los Angeles.
Mayor Kevin Stapleton was
saddened that such a nice gesture and event was met with
controversy prior to the scheduled event, but is grateful that it
is at its final placement.
Years ago the Olmec head
was donated by the sister city
of Jalapa in Mexico. From the
beginning, the donated 7 ton
Olmec was originally to be place

at its namesake park. However,
for a number of reasons, it did
not make it to the park, but it
was placed in front of the police station instead. There it remained for about 20 years.
During the reconstruction of the
area, the head ended up in the
maintenance yard. Stapleton
and the rest of the council, outside of Low, took up the effort
to get it placed where it was
originally suppose to go.
The replica Olmec head is
like those thousands-years-old
colossal heads found in Mexico,
remnants of the ancient Olmec
civilization.
The head now sits on a platform at the park located at
Garvey and Holt. It overlooks
the I-10 freeway of the travelers who are coming from the
east. It appears as though it is
overlooking the gateway from
the freeway to the City of
Covina.
It has been stated that this is
the 5th head in the United
States. Two plaques at the base
of Olmec, one in English and
the other in Spanish reads: Colossal Olmec Head No. 5.

Glendora Woman's Club Donates
$5,000 to Glendora Public library

GLENDORA - During the
Glendora Council meeting on
May 22, Glendora Woman's
Club President Sue Bauer presented a $5,000 check from the
club to Library Director Robin
Weed-Brown for the Glendora
Public Library Friends Foundation to help purchase books.
The special presentation at
the City Council meeting honored the Glendora Woman's
Club for founding the Glendora
Public library on May 20, 1912.
It also celebrated the 100th
Anniversary of the Glendora
Public Library and its 100
years of continuous operation,
without interruption.
The $5,000 check to the library is part of the Glendora
Woman's Club's ongoing support of the library and its many
community projects.
