Taking A Stand For Racehorses
Though horse racing used to be called the “sport of
kings,” racehorses are not treated as royalty. Several
recent investigations have revealed the pervasive,
abusive practice of drugging racehorses. An eyebrow-raising assortment of performance-enhancing
and pain-masking drugs, including everything from
steroids to cobra venom, enable horses to perform
beyond their physical limitations and often result in
catastrophic injuries and horrific deaths.
Though the horse racing industry has long promised to restrict the use of performance-enhancing
drugs, such voluntary measures have been largely
ignored. Lax or nonexistent oversight allows, and
encourages, the use of any means possible—even
cruel, life-threatening means—to win races. The
worst offenders can easily circumvent the current
patchwork of state horse-commission rules by
relocating their operations.
It is time to bring an end to this rampant cruelty.
H.R. 1733/S. 886, the Interstate Horseracing Improvement Act, would prohibit the use of performanceenhancing drugs in racehorses. This federal ban on
doping is necessary to make welfare standards
applicable nationwide. It would end the confusion of
various states having different rules, and create a
“three strikes and you’re out” penalty for strong
enforcement. We must end the drugging that is costing thousands of racehorses their lives every year.
Racehorses need our protection—it’s time to stop
abusers before they even get out of the starting gate.

Bringing Trendy along this summer despite his
greenness has been a group effort. Liza explained, “I
told her a few things, like get him a little bit fitter.

Future Hunters Shine
The future hunters division is a unique portion of the horse
show. Five divisions feature talented up-and-coming hunters in
the outdoor arena over two days. Most often when the Future
Hunters are mentioned it is assumed they are young animals just
getting into the ring. But there are also animals who have
changed careers or were started late and don’t fit in to the
“young” category. The 6 & Over division gives those horses an
opportunity to compete against one another. The championship,
sponsored by New Hope LLC/David Belford and Christopher
Payne, went to By The Way, ridden by Jeff Gogul for Ruth Kanner. The eight-year-old Warmblood gelding finished first in both

EquiFit rider Patricia Griffith shares advice
EquiFit is proud to work with Patricia Griffith, who trains and rides
out of Heritage Farm in Katonah, NY. Patricia Griffith arrived at Heritage Farm as a working student in 1997, and since then has been at the
pinnacle of hunter, jumper and equitation success. She has won the
World Champion Hunter Rider Professional Challenge, topped countless USHJA International Hunter Derbies, and was named the
Hunter/Equitation Horseman of the Year by the Chronicle of the
Horse. Just last month Patricia won the $500,000 Diamond Mills
Hunter Prix. Just a few hours later she was competing in the Pfizer
Million. A heavyweight in both hunter & jumper divisions, Patricia can
be found here at Capital Challenge competing mounts Brodeur, Silouette, Akinda, Lordana, Arico and Rock Steady, as well as coaching the
talented Heritage students at the hunter & equitation rings.
One of Patricia’s many strengths that makes her such a strong role
model is an ability to break down students’ challenges and offer simple solutions. Asked for advice on how to stay calm on course, Patricia

course, make sure you use the turns to your advantage. If your horse
tends to pick up and cut the turns this is especially important. The jumps will start to come up too fast and it
will definitely look rough. At home practice doing a line and halting straight. Then go forward down the next
line and halt again. When that gets good, do a half halt after each line instead of a full stop. In the show ring,
take it line by line, regrouping in each corner and taking a breath. Think of it as checking your speed and regrouping where you need to. You want to do this in the first part of the turn so in the second part of the turn
you have your rhythm set and you are looking for the jump.”
