Ask what you can do for your chapter.” And with so many demands on your time, why would you donate precious hours to ASID NJ? During my year as chapter president, many of you have expressed your thoughts and ideas about how we can make ASID NJ an even better chapter. Now is the time to step up to the plate and do more than just express opinions. Volunteer to serve on a committee! When you become involved, you contribute to the success of our chapter, which, in turn, contributes to your success as a professional. With this in mind, ASID has developed a new Leadership Academy. Created with the guidance of a leadership development consultant to numerous Fortune 500 companies, this program provides a roadmap for building your leadership capacity, whether you seek to advance in ASID volunteer leadership roles or apply these skills to your career. The Leadership Academy is focused around four central leadership competencies: Engaging People, Understanding and Leveraging Organizational Information, Demonstrating Strategic Perspective and Serving as an Organizational Advocate. Each of these four competencies is further defined by a number of sub-competencies that, once mastered, collectively represent proficiency of each major competency area. With this program, we are in a unique position to gain priceless training for our business and personal lives while benefiting our chapter. Our newest committee, Emerging Professionals, has blossomed under the advisement of Diane Goté. She has rallied and organized these designers into six regional teams who will be working with this training to advance their careers and their involvement in ASID NJ. So how to get more involved with our chapter? You can find a list of committees under the Chapter Info tab at www.asidnj.org. Click on each committee name and you will find a description of the committee, as well as name and e-mail for the current chair. To volunteer, contact the committee you are interested in or send an e-mail to Isabelle Lanini, our chapter administrator, at administrator@asidnj.org. If you don’t have a particular committee in mind, Isabelle can help you determine where your talents can best be used. Designers, Industry Partners and Student Members are all welcome! And while we are on the subject of personal development, did you know that ASID offers easy anytime access to a growing number of high quality on-line education and training courses aimed at some of interior design’s most pressing issues? Topics covered by ASID UNi include “Aging in Style,” “Business Planning for New Designers,” “Beyond the Chapel: Using Light as Inspiration throughout Healthcare Facilities, “Green Eggs and Home: Sustainable Residential Products,” and many more. You’ll find more information under the Education tab at www.asid.org. Sharon L. Sherman, ASID, CID President, ASID New Jersey Chapter 4 | SPRING 2013 | NEW JERSEY CHAPTER NATIIONAL NEWS Dallas Symposium By Michael Mariotti, ASID Michael’s position as At-Large Board Member has him over-seeing legislative issues. He attended the Dallas Symposium on this topic along with President-elect Donna Domenicali, Allied ASID. The event was held in Dallas, Texas, on February 1-3, 2013. Here are some of Michael’s comments on what he learned: “The conference was an eye opener and taught me many new things about ASID and the importance of being an ASID designer and why it’s important to become a certified designer. It was very helpful to learn about how a bill is created and the whole process that goes along to making the bill go from concept to becoming a bill in actuality. Learning about rebuttals and how to spread the word about how legislative concerns affect all of us as interior designers and how the more we know about our legislature in reference to interior design helps us raise the bar for our industry. Meeting and supporting our lobbyist was something I was not familiar with and gave me a new spin on things. Fundraising for your lobbyist can go a long way in aiding getting your bill passed.” Visit our new website at oceanbath.com 1122 hwy 35 s, ocean, nj 07712 732.695.3535 / info@oceanbath.com NEW JERSEY CHAPTER | SPRING 2013 | 5 SPOTLIGHT ON MEMBERS Public Relations Report TRADITIONAL HOME May '13 issue: "Petal Perfect" (p.36)-Virginia Zonfrilli, Allied ASID; By Anne Marie Soto, ASID NJ Public "Stately Homes by the Sea" (p. 116&118)-Diane Durocher, ASID Relations/Marketing Consultant (201) THE BEST OF BERGEN The following publications recently highlighted ASID April’13 issue: “Time for a Change” (pp.84-89)-Suzanne Curtis, ASID NJ interior designers. In addition to our chapter’s community service projects, our members generously support many worthy causes. Here are just a few of them. CHAIRISH THE MUSEUM In February 2013, the Monmouth Museum presented its eighth annual “Chairish” the Museum Exhibition and Silent Auction Benefit featuring a gold theme to celebrate the Museum’s 50th Anniversary. Over 50 one-of-akind chairs, designed and decorated by local artists, were on display. Many of the chairs were found in attics, curbside collections and at yard sales and were transformed into unique works of art that are both sculptural and utilitarian. During the Silent Auction Benefit Finale, the public had an opportunity to purchase the chairs and all proceeds support the Museum’s educational programs including exhibitions, children’s activities and Museum tours. Five ASID NJ interior designers participated. Donna Domenicali, Allied ASID: “Golden Twenties” started life as a ladder-back chair from Goodwill. Not wanting to distract from the crafstmanship of the piece, it was simply painted a bold blue with a glossy finish to bring out its sculptural quality. Strategic placement of gold-leaf punctuates the artistic flair of the chair's individual style. “This event is a wonderful collaboration with local artists in the community, and each year we delight in seeing the ways in which they have transformed found chairs into unique and functional works of art,” says Julia Fiorino, public relations coordinator for the Monmouth Museum. “We appreciate their generous donation of time and talent, and our guests at our silent auction event enjoy the opportunity to take home a chair and support the Museum.” Fran Schier-Potter, Allied ASID: “Blue Star” DINING BY DESIGN Holly George, Allied ASID and Alicia Shearer, ASID created and donated tablescapes for Taste of Talent, an annual fundraising event for Project Self-Sufficiency (PSS). RED CROSS DONATION During the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Zoffany realized that designers from our area belonging to the ASID NJ, NY Metro and CT chapters found it very difficult to carry on business as usual. In an effort to lend their support to the Red Cross on behalf of Zoffany and their design customers, the company offered to donate 10% of their profits from sales during the end of 2012/beginning of 2013 to the Red Cross. The result was a donation of more than $20,000. ASID NJ was honored that Zoffany chose our trade show as an occasion to present the Red Cross with their check. The New Jersey Chapter developed initiatives that include teams of members that will discuss, plan and organize events for early career members. The program is organized into six teams across the State that will get together every eight weeks to support each other in learning new methods of practice. The new Leadership Academy released by ASID on the national level will provide guidance in leadership skills. Consider it a think tank for new ways of providing services and sharing concepts that include business and leadership skills. Tours of successful offices of designers and architects as well as tours of newly built corporate structures are part of the agenda--visible results from the well planned professional interior designer. Despite torrential rain and terrible traffic delays in the morning, this year’s Conference and Trade Show created quite a bit of buzz and excitement! We thank all of our IPs and sponsors for giving us such a terrific show, and for all of the designers who braved the weather to spend the day with us. After the CEU, attendees were invited to review the Student Displays from all five of our ASID NJ Student Chapters. At the exhibit hall entrance, we displayed the New Products submitted by our exhibitors and voted on by attendees for the Best New Product Award. This was won by new IP Savona Tile, who displayed their Modular Arts textured interlocking tile. After a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:00 am, the exhibit hall officially opened! Booths this year were terrific and very well designed. Attendees were also happy that we had over 15 new IPs exhibiting. At noon, the center of the hall became a festive lunch area for attendees, creatively displayed by our friends at Garden State Exhibit Center. Served in martini glasses, mashed potatoes with fixings and garden salad were two of the delicious offerings. As the culmination of our New Jersey Interior Design Week, the Trade Show offered morning and afternoon CEUs as well as a New Products gallery, Student Display and “Center Stage” lunch. Gail Doby, ASID, started the day with a 0.2 CEU. Her presentation, "How to Avoid Interior Design Fee Fiascos and Attract Your Ideal Client," sparked a lot of discussion. For example, she proposed calculating a fee based on results your client values and discussing it openly upfront. She also recommended going beyond a fact-based information gathering client interview towards more of a discussion of the client’s emotional motivators. For the afternoon break, cookies and fruit were served as door prizes were drawn and the Booth Award winners were announced. Best Booth went to CMI! Honorable mentions went to Creative Displays and Peaslee Designs. Material ConneXion’s Fiona Anastas was the speaker for the HSW CEU in the afternoon and received great feedback from her session. Her presentation of the latest and greatest materials in our industry earned attendees a Health, Safety and Welfare CEU credit. Our first New Jersey Interior Design Week was a big hit! Thirty-two Industry Partners offered courses and tours to designers all across the state. Here is a comment from a participating designer that sums it up well. Students attended from Berkeley College, NJIT, Brookdale Community College and Kean University. The annual event provides an opportunity for design students to meet, chat and learn from professionals in the world of interior design. This day featured five IP tabletop sponsors which enabled the students to learn about current product lines and services. Being a sponsor also provided them with a venue to introduce themselves to future designers who will soon be buying in the field. Also featured was the ASID Distinguished Speaker, Kenneth Roberts who presented an engaging program regarding tips for job hunting. Mike: I am going into my fourth year of Interior Design at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. I was born and raised in the small town of Lyndhurst, New Jersey. My passion for architecture and design started many years ago. In middle school, I would use graph paper from my teacher's desk and spend days, sometimes even weeks, creating floor plans of elaborate homes that I would imagine and dream of. I saw myself doing this as nothing more than a hobby, and my teachers felt the same way. They reprimanded me if they saw these plans out during class and encouraged me to focus more on what they were preaching and less on my "little houses." NJ Inspire: So how did you make the transition from middle school diversion to a career path? Mike: It was my mother, Lynn, who saw a potential future for me in architecture and design. Throughout high school, my collection of designs grew and I started to pursue an interest in the field. I looked at designoriented colleges in the area and almost immediately fell in love with NJIT. One of the happiest days of my life was when my guidance counselor called me into his office to tell me that I had been accepted into their School of Art + Design as an interior design major. Now that I have spent a few years in the program, I can speak nothing but good things about the university, its faculty, and the education that I have received thus far at NJIT. It truly is a world-class university. NJ Inspire: What role is ASID playing in your studies? Mike: I got involved with the American Society of Interior Designers at the beginning of this past school year. Several of my studio classmates began to take a greater interest in the school’s chapter and agreed to help out with anything that needed to be done. It was then announced that the position of Student Representative to the Board of the New Jersey Chapter was open and needed to be filled. After spending a few days pondering this opportunity and making sure that my schedule would allow for it, I applied and was appointed to the board. At our first meeting, I met a handful of great colleagues who are also respected and accomplished designers. They inspire me to work hard and be the best that I can be. NJ Inspire: What does being ASID NJ Student Representative to the Board entail? Mike: It includes representing all of the student chapters in the state of New Jersey, being a voting member of the chapter board, and acting as the liaison between the chapter and the student members. On campus, I encourage active participation in ASID events, along with organizing meetings and events with our Student Chapter President Kelsey Jackson. Our school also had the honor of hosting ASID Career Day this past April. It was a wonderful opportunity for the student body to meet industry professionals and learn about what awaits us in the future as interior designers. NJ Inspire: Between your studies and your ASID obligations, do you have time for other activities? Mike: In addition to my involvement with ASID, I help out in my town’s Little League program as an umpire and newly-appointed volunteer board member. My father has been a Little League coach in my town for several decades, and it is very exciting to work with him and be able to give back to the community. I am also an assistant wrestling coach at Lyndhurst High School, a very time-consuming but satisfying endeavor. At school, I have recently declared a minor in the Theater Arts & Technology department. I am a member of the Improv Technicians, a group of NJIT and Rutgers students that perform free improvisational comedy shows on campus and around the city of Newark. As someone who has always loved entertaining those around me, it gives me great pleasure to be able to make people laugh and put smiles on as many faces as possible. NJ Inspire: Got some future plans you’d like to share with us? Mike: Currently, I am in the process of designing an ergonomicallyfriendly musician’s chair as part of a Furniture Design course taught by Professor David Brothers. After winning a statewide chair design competition last fall for Kimball Office, the field of furniture design has significantly interested me. After graduating next spring, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in architecture and continue my studies at NJIT. I know that, upon completion of my term this upcoming fall, I leave the position of Student Rep to the Board in good hands and look forward to my future involvements with ASID. Brookdale Participates in Stately Homes Show House Four Brookdale Community College students, under the direction of Faculty Advisor Celeste Chirichello, created the Designer Sales Office at this year’s Stately Homes by the Sea Show House which benefits the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Central New Jersey. Participating students are Jackie Currie-Taylor, Student ASID (design concept & project manager), Diane Fanshel, Student ASID, Natalie Rosenthal, Student ASID and Jodi Heimowitz, Student ASID. Hartshorne Manor, site of this year’s show house, is a Tudor style mansion built in 1929. Inspiration for the students’ space comes from the fact that Hartshorne Manor came alive during the winter season with owner Harold Hartshorne and his guests skating on the Shrewsbury River and the skating pond at the front of the mansion. The design concept is a nod to this bygone era at Hartshorne. The featured wall art suggesting skate marks on ice sets the scene. The winter white color palette and layers of textiles give depth to a monochromatic scheme. Symbolic of a skater’s movement on ice, the pop of orange chevron creates a dynamic modern twist.
