It all started with a science project.
First grade teacher Dave Thompson
wanted his class to watch chicks
hatch from eggs. He decided to
keep the chicks at their old farmhouse. “When the chickens began
to lay eggs, I found myself selling
the eggs to the other teachers, ”
said Dave. Thirty years later, the
Thompsons are still selling their
eggs, but on a much larger scale.
Dave always had a strong belief
in protecting the environment. He envisioned
creating a fertilizer from the by-product of his
chickens. He then began a trial and error process
to develop the perfect compost After a year of
composting outside in wind rows and dealing with
Mother Nature, he soon realized that in order to
advance, he needed the operation under a roof.
The aerobically composted chicken manure was
then sent to a golf course superintendent in the
western suburbs of Chicago. He applied Dave’s
compost alongside other composts and fertilizers
in 5 x 5 foot squares on a test fairway. That winter
turned out to be a very snowy one. When the
snow melted and spring arrived, Dave was pleasantly surprised to find that his plots were a deeper
green and had almost no areas with snow mold
compared to all the other products tested, which
had a high rate of snow mold.
That year, Dave decided to conduct other side-byside tests and continued to see less disease
present where his compost was applied. Over and
over, golf course superintendents claimed that the
grass with his product was healthier.
Dave was attempting to differentiate his products
from the competition. It kept coming back to him
that his fertilizers produced healthy plants. In an
effort to convey that to his customers........

A Practical Guide to
Organic Lawn Care
The principals behind growing a great lawn organically
are simple. The most important element of a healthy
lawn is the soil. A healthy soil grows healthy plants.
When you apply HEALTHY GROW® you are feeding
the soil with not only the essential nutrients for healthy
turf, you are also adding an abundance of organic
matter. This organic matter will aid in reducing your
water needs and suppressing disease by the addition
of beneficial micro-organisms which immediately begin
to multiply and start to reduce thatch and break down
other minerals and organic matter into more nutrients
for the turf to utilize. Over time, having a natural lawn
will result in reduced maintenance, less pollution, and
lush, thriving turf.
Mowing
Make sure your blades are sharp to avoid damaging
the grass blades. Set the mower height to 3” in spring
increasing to maximum height during hot summer
months. This provides shade for the turf plants which
helps to reduce their water needs and makes it difficult
for weed seeds to germinate. Leave grass clippings on
the lawn, as they decompose and add further organic
matter to the lawn.

How:
Apply to a dry, recently mowed lawn. If no rain is
expected for a prolonged period, improved results
may be obtained by watering it in.
When:
Organic healthy grow® Lawn Food may be applied
at any time.
How Much:
Apply at the regular rate of 12.5 lbs. per 1000
sq. ft. or a heavier rate of 20 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft.
The higher rate can be most beneficial in late fall
after the lawn has been aerated. When seeding or
sodding, apply at the 12.5 lb. rate under the sod
or over the new seed.
Storage:
Healthy Grow has an unlimited shelf life but must
be kept dry. Unused portion should be kept in the
original package and sealed to prevent from
getting wet.
Safety:
Healthy Grow is a slow release, long lasting (up to
12 weeks) fertilizer which WON’T BURN your lawn.
As with any fertilizer, it should not be applied near
water, storm drains, or drainage ditches. It is an all
natural organic product which is safe for kids and
pets. It is safe to be on the lawn immediately after
applying.
Feeding
Always use a certified organic fertilizer and closely
check for undesirable heavy metal content such as
arsenic. Healthy lawns will benefit from a product which
is high in calcium, In addition to the macro nutrients
NPK, calcium is the most critical component as it helps
release the natural nutrition which exists in the soil.
Watering
Organic lawns require less water because of the higher
organic matter in the soil. Increased mower height
creates shade which reduces evaporation. During
periods of drought, we recommend watering deeply
with 1.5” to 2” of water every other week. Or, you may
choose to let your “cool season grasses” go dormant.
