Prince George’s Publick Playhouse for the performing arts 2014–2015 season The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County Welcome to the 2014-2015 Season The Publick Playhouse is your performing arts center, and this season is all about you! We’ve listened to your requests and planned a season to fulfill your expectations. International hip hop icon Rennie Harris Puremovement will turn the stage upside down in October, and Philadanco will make it sizzle in November. In April internationally acclaimed Dallas Black Dance Theatre will return, spinning out a whole new program for their Publick Playhouse fans. World dance fans will find Maestro KHAN with Sistah Mafalda and The Kuumba Performers here in May. The Playhouse is known for its excellent acoustics, and we’re turning it blue…Jazz Meets Blues for Black History Month when D.C.’s own globe-trotting blues harp star Phil Wiggins teams up with emerging jazz dynamo Karen Lovejoy. And in June two long-time national blues pros, Lazy Lester and Sleepy LaBeef, put on a powerhouse performance of music sprinkled with laughter. Midweek Matinees offer exciting new curriculum-relevant programs and performances for youth. Tiny Tots workshops and performances are back, along with the Platinum Series for patrons 60 and better. This is my 17th and final year at the Publick Playhouse. It has been my pleasure and privilege to be involved in bringing you so many wonderful performances. From Ruby Dee and John Amos to Keter Betts and Martha and the Vandellas; exciting tours like Amazones from Guinea and Lula Washington from Los Angeles; programs we created like the Praise Liturgical Dance Festival, and our Making a Musical Camp each June… the list is way too long to reprise here, but I want to add that this is the 12th season the internationally acclaimed Dallas Black Dance Theatre will be in residence for a week at the Playhouse. I’m proud to have been a part of it all, and I’m grateful for your enthusiasm for the programs we present for you. Thank you for your support and patronage. The Playhouse staff looks forward to seeing you often this season and in the years to come. There’s lots more excitement ahead! 3 | 2014-2015 Season —C urlen Lee, Managing Director Publick Playhouse for the performing arts 2014–2015 season DANCE PLAYHOUSE SERIES Dallas Black Dance Theatre Concerts p. 8 Platinum Live p. 20 Master Class p. 23 Midweek Matinees p. 10 Philadanco! Although the ceiling no longer features an ornate, star-filled sky, and additional renovations were undertaken in 1984 and 2006, the original art deco theme has been preserved. The building opened in 1947 as the Cheverly Theatre, a stylish movie theatre with plush seating for 900 and one of the first places in the area with air conditioning. The Cheverly was the flagship of the Sidney Lust chain of movie houses. In the late 1960s, the theatre fell into decline and closed. In 1975, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission acquired the property and began an extensive restoration.
