Morse Memorial Fountain Installed
We are grateful to Barbara Morse Wackford and the Morse family who
have donated this beautiful fountain in memory of their father Archie
Morse. If you haven't been to the Museum or driven by lately to see the
fountain, please do so. It is a "must see." The fountain is the newest addition to our ongoing landscaping projects. We are thankful also for the generosity of the Secret Garden and the volunteers for finishing this part of
our landscaping project. Brick planters for a shade garden as well as brickwork around the front porch have all been completed. Roses and small
trees will be planted this spring adding to the beautification of the grounds.
Thanks to Boy Scout Troops 59 and 007, Gardeners of the Grove and the
Elk Grove Garden Club for their help with these projects.
Shown in the picture are the volunteers who
helped install the fountain: Front row: Brian

Louie Baroni Deputy Sheriff and Constable of Elk Grove 1950 to 1971
In 1932 Don Cox, Sheriff of Sacramento County, deputized Louie Baroni
as Deputy Sheriff for Walnut Grove. Then in 1950 Sheriff Cox appointed
Deputy Sheriff Louie Baroni the first resident Sheriff of Elk Grove. When
Fred Mix was elected to office as Judge of the San Joaquin Township,
Sheriff Cox appointed Louie to be both Sheriff and Constable of the
Court in Elk Grove until he retired in 1971.
Louie Baroni’s daughter
JoAnn Baroni Glavich, with
her daughter Karin Glavich
Potter and husband Don
Glavich, visited the Board
Meeting on February 11, 2013 and donated many articles for the Historical
Society to display. Dennis Buscher accepted the donation and told the
family these items will be displayed in the Jail and will be available to view
on March 2, 2013 and every first Saturday of the month through October.

Rhoads School Report—Francis Fite
It appears as though Spring
is nearly upon us. With this
month comes a return of
school classes to the Rhoads
School as children go to
Rhoads School
Established 1872
school and experience a day
in the past.
In order to prepare for the children's' return, the
Rhoads Board members spent a morning doing 'Spring
Cleaning' at the school. A crew of 14 or so people did
window-washing, desk polishing, floor scrubbing, rose
bush trimming, and a host of other chores.
Beginning now, the school schedule will be full
almost daily through May. So far 55 classes are
scheduled.
Courtesy Membership
A special welcome to Fred & Crystal Ludwig and
Aaron & Sandra Blote who have been given courtesy
memberships. Fred and Aaron work as a team and
have volunteered their time to do our electrical work
around the Museum. They are both licensed electricians working for a company that is doing work in
Stockton.
They live in Elk Grove and the first job they have
done for us is running an electrical line to the front
yard to power the fountain.
Thank you Fred and Aaron for volunteering your
time and expertise to the Society!

Museum's New Name
Elk Grove House & Stage Stop Museum
At a recent Board meeting Dennis Buscher stated that the
Museum was never a "Hotel," and that perhaps we should be
more accurate in our signage and reference. At the Board's
request, our Historian Tom Russell did some research on the
name of the Museum. It was learned that the original name
was the "Elk Grove House" and was listed in county records as
a "Tavern". It was a Stage Stop and a mail stop along the Upper
Stockton Road and had 13 rooms but nothing ever has indicated that it acted as a "HOTEL". When the Elk Grove House
burned on April 28, 1858, it was still called the "Elk Grove

Yard Sale Items House", not "Hotel". It is believed that the name "HOTEL"
came to be associated with people staying overnight in their

EGHS Board Meeting Minutes – February 11, 2013
Call to order: EGHS President Barbara Claire
 The family of Louis Baroni, Elk Grove's beloved resident deputy sheriff and constable during the 1950s to 1971,
attended the meeting. See article elsewhere in this newsletter regarding their donation.
 Barbara explained why we are not on the free museum listings. You have to be a member of the Sacramento
Museum Association and it is very expensive.
 Gina Castro is no longer the webmaster but will keep her commitment to be our Publicity Chair.
 Minutes of January 14 were approved as submitted. Jeanette presented several bills to be paid, which the Board
approved. The Treasurer's report was approved as submitted.
Committee Reports
 Cookbook - A printer has been selected and details are being worked out to have 200 books printed and ready by
the Spring Tea.
 Docents - Five people have agreed to docent at the Museum on March 2, which is also the day of the bus trip to
Mare Island.
 Spring Tea - Sally reported on the Tea's progress and presented a budget, which the Board approved.
Unfinished Business
 Displays - We have 20 nice displays with room for more.
 Front Landscaping & Walkway Lighting - Boy Scouts will work on the landscaping.
 Foulks House Restoration - Jim is working on a new Grant. We have a June deadline to submit the architect's
invoice from our current grant to the City of Elk Grove.
 Repainting Museum signs - Jim presented an estimate to repaint the sign for the Museum and change the wording
to Elk Grove House and Stage Stop Museum. Barbara, Jeanette and Dennis will be responsible for input on the
color and location.
 Water damage repair— Dennis removed the mold and will repaint if needed after the wallpaper is reattached.
New Business
 Electrical Receptacles - We have problems with the air diffusers fitting into the electrical receptacles. Our
volunteer electricians will be contacted for advice.
 Glass Shelving - Up to $275 was approved to purchase glass shelving for the two recently purchased lighted cabinets in the museum store.
President Barbara Claire adjourned the meeting.
Raley's and Bel Air "Something Extra" Program
Raley's and Bel Air have changed their Quality of Life program to the "Something Extra" program. If
you have not added us to your new card, the Elk Grove Historical Society does not get the "Extra
Credit" that would go for Scholarships to Rhoads School. Adding us does not take away any of the
rewards, including the money, that you would normally receive. Here is how to add us to your card:
Go to Raleys.com
Sign In to your account. You need your email and password (If you don't know your password, they will send it to
you.)
On the right hand side click on "Manage Your Account"
On the right hand side click on "Extra Credit"
In the middle of the page click on "Add or Change your Organization"
On the left hand side put in the zip code: "95759" or "Elk Grove Historical Society." The name will come up.
Click on the name and determine the percentage you would like to go to the Historical Society. Your percentages
must add up to 100%
If you have any problems, ask at your store. There are people there that can help you to add us to the "Extra Credit"
program.
