The retreat was held at Lake Tiak-O’-Khata located in Louisville, MS. This first retreat was for two days. The ladies had so much fun; completed many UFOs and started new projects, it looks like this will become an annual event! We finished our year with a Christmas Party at San Marcos. In October everyone was given a green fat quarter to use making a 12 ½ inch Christmas block. The completed blocks were brought to the party. The winner of the blocks is challenged to have the quilt top completed by the next Christmas Party. Barbara Watson won this year’s blocks. We invite everyone to view our Facebook Page to see our Show and Tell as well as our completed monthly projects. Additionally, all are welcome to visit our meetings. Central Brandon MS— Brandon Quilters As another year comes to an end, we look back on what we have accomplished, projects we have finished, things we have learned, events we have attended, gifts we have given, and we realize that our guild has been a part of many of these. Our programs helped us tackle techniques we might not do on our own, such as those pesky "Y" seams that were demonstrated for us by several members in September. October's meeting introduced English paper piecing, seen many times in the shape of hexagons. We learned it can even be done by machine! (I have a project simmering in the back of my mind for that one!) November brought our famous (or infamous), auction, with everything from cakes to candy, "antiques" to "awesome" being offered. We may end up being inspire, amazed, owning a new charity project to complete, or at the very least: a little more room on our fabric shelves if we brought more than we bought Melissa, to our meeting to accept the pil- 3 Brandon MS Brandon Quilters (cont) November also saw several of our members traveling to Hattiesburg to attend their monthly meeting and do a trunk show for them. This was to reciprocate for the wonderful show they did for us in August. Our year ended with several traditions: a rousing round of "The Wright Family Game", the exciting drawing for the winner of our UFO Challenge, and a wonderful meal as we shared fellowship and fun. We varied a bit, having a covered dish dinner instead of having it catered. It's been decided- quilters are also great cooks! We added a special feature, a trunk show by two of our own members. Marcella Comans gave us "From the Beginning to Now" and Beth Boone shared a selection of wonderful family quilts from her childhood along with stories of each. In conclusion, Happy New Year and please come for a visit! First Monday, Brandon Public Library, 6:30, and happy quilting! Polly Duggan Brandon MS-Quilter’s By Hearts Desire The Quilter’s By Hearts Desire truly lives up to the name that was given the guild over 20 years ago. Our members quilt according to what speaks to their hearts. Our guild varies it techniques from art quilting to traditional quilting. Each meeting is filled with anticipation to see what items the membership will bring for our show and tell. Quilts based on Gwen Marston techniques to quilts that are made from blocks left over from other projects grace our meeting interests. We also have programs on basics. This fall the basics were what batting to use for your quilt project and just exactly what type of fusible do you want to use in your project. We are looking forward to 2015. If you are in the Brandon area on a Monday evening, stop by and visit us. We meet at St. Mark’s Methodist Church on Grants Ferry Rd., in the Reservoir area of Brandon. The meeting starts at 7:00 pm. completed this challenge. It is always impressive what the membership does to complete a challenge. Our show and tell part of our meeting is always varied. We have small and large quilts displayed by the members. Quilts vary from embroidered quilts, children’s quilts, bed quilts and we have a member who made bags for each of her granddaughter’s classmates in school. The granddaughter’s teacher also receives a quilt each year. One of the events we did this year was to tour a Pottery maker in Brandon MS. He is a local artisan and every one enjoyed seeing his workshop and listening to him explain the process it takes to make an object. We artisans are all alike. We love to share the love of our art with others. We continue to make items for the Pregnancy Crisis Center here in Pearl MS. This year we added pillows and drainage bags to our volunteer project. These items went to the Cancer facility here in Jackson. We also made 20 toy bags for Blair Batson hospital this year. Joan Alliston our teacher in house gave a class on her Migrating Geese for those of us who could not take it at the June Gathering. It is great to have a member like Joan who is willing to share her knowledge. Come and see us if you can. We meet at the MS. State Extension Bldg., 601 Marquette Rd., Brandon MS. On the 2nd Monday of each month. Meeting time is 1:00 pm. Gulf Coast Lucedale MS—Melon Patch Quilt in (George County) starts the new year with a new slate of officers. We are excited about all the plans these new officers have made for the year. Monthly we will make seasonal wall hangings as we have all finished (well, mostly finished) our 2014 project of El's Kitchen samplers. Our January project will be a Valentine's Day wall hanging. We'll have another quilt retreat in June, 2015 and we are all looking forward to that. We continue to make charity quilts for families who have lost their house to fire. A scrapbook will be started this year. We plan to offer sewing classes this year. Brandon MS-Rankin County Quilters We welcome new memOne of the challenges our guild had bers. Our guild created over forty charity quilts in 2014; twenty-two were donated to Brenda’s House, a local children’s shelter, and the rest will be used for future needs. Members will continue to sew charity quilts into 2015, as the local need is ongoing. End-of-year programs included a curved tree block taught by Yvette Taglieri and a trunk show from Therese Springer featuring fabric, clothing, and textile arts & crafts from her recent trip to India. For the first time Bay Oaks participated in the Hancock County Library Tree Gala, decorating a Christmas tree with quilted and other hand-made ornaments. Our guild is a sponsored partner of the local library system and benefits from its publicity outlets and fine facilities. The year ended with our annual Christmas party, held at the Diamondhead Community Center. The party featured homemade treats, an exhibit of challenge quilts, and the election of 2015 officers. Our newly elected officers are: President, Sue Chamberlain; VicePresident, Kay Guillot; Secretary, Laurie Johnson; and Treasurer, Sue Rountree. We are planning our Mississippi Quilt Trail project as a guild and as individuals. In June, we gather at a local restaurant and celebrate all the birthdays and enjoy good company and fellowship. As our mission states, we strive to advance the appreciation, knowledge and enjoyment of quilting and invite anyone desiring to learn about quilts and quilting to join us. Southern Magnolia is the theme and the top eight quilts will be entered into the AQS show in Grand Rapids, Michigan. You can always check out our happenings on our blog at www.possumtownquilters@blogspot.co m. Looking forward to seeing everyone in Hattiesburg in February. Judy Stokes Iuka—Needle Chasers of Tishomingo CO. Members finished 2014 with a Christmas party at the Iuka Public Library. Everyone brought finger foods for lunch. A collection basket gathered over $361 to be contributed to the Helpful Samaritan Food Pantry. The Guild added $275 to this amount and sent a check for a total of $636.00 to help the many families in need of the most basic necessity of life. A donation of $200 was also made to the Iuka Library in appreciation of the use of the meeting room throughout the year for board and general meetings. Carla Formel and DeWhyte Mosley decorated a tree at the Lowndes County Library to participate in their Festival of Trees. This has been an ongoing project we have participated in for several years. We each made a new ornament to supplement our collection. Our Christmas Party was held at Flint Hill United Methodist Church in Caledonia on Dec 6. We had a great time playing Dirty Santa and also played a game where each person brought a handmade item and we passed them left and right based on the story being read. This is always fun too. This year we also Submitted by: Barbara Patterson 662-424-9665 Starkville—Happy Hoopers.. The Hoopers is a small guild (no officers, no dues!) which gathers for fun & fellowship each Thursday morning. The “old” Starkville Sportsplex Building is our home. Our official meeting time is 10:00noon, but often are talking and stay past noon. Hard to imagine a group of quilters getting so involved in visiting that they forget the clock?—Definitely not! Each quilter works on a project of their own—some a different project each meeting and others the same project for several weeks. Originally we began as a hand-quilting guild but all quilters are invited. This is a great place to bounce project ideas due to all the varied skills and quilting interests. If you are in the area on a Thursday morning, please come say hello. Angela Pannell Southeast Hattiesburg—Pine Belt Quilters’ Since the close of our Fiber Arts and Quilt Show in October, Pinebelt Quilters have been busy. The show was a great success. Attendance was good and everyone seemed happy with the quality of the show. One of our own members, Dianne McLendon won our raffle quilt. The program for our October meeting was a presentation of the PBQ winners from the show. In November we were treated with a trunk show by the Brandon Quilters. We all went home inspired and wanting to make more quilts. Also that month we celebrated our 30th anniversary as a guild with recognition of the founding of our guild and of former presidents. At that meeting we also elected Dianne McLendon as a member of our Board of Directors. At our meeting Ellen Cox presented a “snippet” showing us a new use for an old product. She said that you can use bridal aisle fabric rather than paper for foundation piecing. It is very thin and does not need to be removed from your block. It can even be ironed onto freezer paper and run through your printer. It comes in 100 foot rolls and is 24 inches wide. It is available in the bridal section at Hobby Lobby. At our December meeting other members reported that this really works well. In December we celebrated with our Christmas luncheon. We also presented quilts to several children’s shelters, the Hattiesburg Fire Department, and the Veteran’s Home in Collins. We also donate comfort pillows to Forrest General Hospital, Wesley Hospital, and Marion County General Hospital. Walker totes and catheter bag covers are also donated monthly. Betty Allen West Central Vicksburg—Vicksburg Quilters The Vicksburg Quilters spent the months of September and October getting ready to host MQA's Fall Gathering, all of the members pitched in to make the Gathering a success. 5 Vicksburg—Vicksburg Quilters (cont) In November, we worked on Charity Quilts and QOV. Our December meeting was our Christmas Party. Members brought finger foods and unwrapped new toys to be given to the local Children's Shelter. We also are so very proud of member, Mary Holman, she was part to the Amazing Eight group. This group entered a quilt in the Houston Quilt Show and won first place in the Group Division.
