Here are all of Henk’s paintings that they have kept to exhibit in their own museum and for other exhibitions. It tells the story of their house, studio and museum “De Weem” in Westeremden (Groningen, the Netherlands). Additionally, this book offers an impression of the collection of art and objects that Henk and Babs have accumulated through the years. These are the very objects that Henk is happy to take as the source of inspiration for a large part of his work. The amused, ironic tone of his writings makes way in his visual work for sublime and monumental compositions. His work often centres on images of desolate landscapes or decaying organisms, which viewers often describe as being 108 pages 31 x 29 cm Hard cover (ENG) ISBN 978-90-72736-07-9 € 29,00 U 207 surrealistic or even apocalyptic. Some find this depressing, but as Kraaijpoel says, “The naked earth, dead plants and animals should not be a reason for pessimism. Decay is normal. A fallen tree makes way for a new one. A fresh leaf has a regular form, but nothing is so fantastically unpredictable as a decayed one. My paintings are an ideal Rorschach test. People see in them whatever is in their minds. ” Texts Ernst van de Wetering, Toine Moerbeek, Laurens Balkema, Diederik Kraaijpoel books 3 Jan van Loon 50 jaar op zoek Born in 1938, van Loon studied art in Groningen and in The Hague. His work ranges from large landscapes in oils, often featuring clouds and water, to smaller landscapes and still lifes in watercolour. Van Loon also paints portraits, which often depict not just the individual but also a general human experience. His coastal landscapes reveal an ongoing inner dialogue between a representational approach that is exemplified by his mudflats; and a reduction of reality into basic structures and shapes, as in his Icelandic works. He has also always appreciated “ordinary” subject matter such as wine glasses and cakes on a table, sport shoes, the interior of a farmhouse, flowers, a pillow or a sandwich. He never settles on a single theme or genre. Good drawings underlie all of his paintings, whether they are of train stations, a bicycle saddle or a church interior. He paints with tempera because it dries faster than oils. His style is realistic without being photographic - in fact, some paintings even border on the absurd. Born in 1950 in Amersfoort. After high school he worked as a sail and tentmaker, before deciding to study art in Utrecht. He found modern abstract art too limited in scope, desiring to make more of a landscape than by simply to use a single line for the horizon, and returned to the figurative approach. This is where he finds tranquillity, tension, loneliness or danger. Human beings, whether actually present or not, are mostly the cause of the subdued tension. People and nature are entwined, eventually attaining a state of mutual harmony. He uses an almost photographic technique in order to achieve this end. The book includes some 150 colour reproductions of still lifes, self portraits, nudes, animal drawings and facsimiles from various travel sketchbooks (Tuscany, Sicily, China and Nepal). Most of these appear here in print for the first time. “...To me the only difference between drawing and painting is practical: it’s easier to travel with a sketchbook than it is with a paint box and panels...” “...I have an enormous appetite for images: wherever I am, I find colour, contrast, and rhythm. My studio is everywhere. This mobility involves a degree of uncertainty, but is ultimately more satisfying.” Foreword Wim Ellens Texts Diederik Kraaijpoel, Eric Bos 160 pages 29 x 24 cm Hard cover (NL, ENG) ISBN 978-90-72736-14-7 € 39,00 U 215 Jan van der Kooi Schilder Tekenaar, with bound drawing Jan van der Kooi Binnen Handbereik, schetsboek Jan van der Kooi Bestiarium, schetsboek Limited edition of 225 numbered copies; each book includes a bound, original drawing by Jan van der Kooi. 160 pages 29 x 24 cm Hard cover (NL, ENG) € 200,00 80 pages 23 x 30 cm Hard cover (NL) ISBN 978-90-72736-57-4 120 pages 29 x 24 cm Hard cover (NL) ISBN 978-90-72736-44-4 € 35,00 € 32,50 U 216 U 252 80 pages 23 x 30 cm Hard cover (NL) ISBN 978-90-72736-42-0 U 259 € 32,50 U 246 Rob Brouwers Grensgangers Hans Dolieslager Indrukken van een landschap Brouwers paints people; he loves the people in his own area -- an ancient woman who lives with her animals in an old shed; an unemployed man resting his helpless hands on a table. Sometimes his paintings appear to be caricatures or cartoons within which he manages to capture a person’s glory or vanity. Brouwers’ style is expressionist, but is thoughtful rather than raw. He builds up layers and layers of paint, only to scratch them off again. This gives a rich sense of depth that is often used as background for his intriguing characters. Text Joep Leerssen The artist Hans Dolieslager has occupied himself for many years with the landscape around his home in Goedereede. The nature reserve “De Kwade Hoek” (The Evil Corner) and the polders with their vast fields and rows of trees are the source of his paintings, pastels and graphic art. It is not so much the direct identification of specific locations that interests him; the subject of his work is the atmosphere, the rhythm and the ever-changing colours of the landscape. Later, back in his studio in the Netherlands, Peter paints them in acrylic on panel or canvas. The landscapes are very quiet and desolate: as if no people or animals live there. Signed and numbered with a Litho of a drawing of “Roumégoux”: 28 x 21.5 cm. Although she attended two art schools in The Netherlands, Frima had to go to Florence to find the teaching she was looking for. Frima trained for six hours a day, six days a week. The result of this dedication is a keen eye for detail and a steady hand for form. Yet her paintings and drawings are not simply the reflections of her retinal images. Although nature and vegetation play a strong role in her work, she chooses her subjects carefully, and sets them meticulously within almost surreal compositions. Foreword Rutger J.B. Painters create out of a need to define a sense of form, and they will find satisfaction if their work corresponds to their true being and to what it means for them to be alive. “De Bruyn Ouboter is 100% himself and does not wish to appear to be anything more”, according to one critic. Diels was educated at the Art Academy in Antwerp. His subjects are contemporary, yet painted in the tradition of the 17th Century. Jef Diels has staged twenty solo exhibitions to date, both at home and abroad, and has been nominated for several awards. Watercolour is perhaps the most difficult of all painting techniques, partly due to its directness. The interaction between paper, water and paint give the watercolour a very special pictorial quality. The watercolour technique demands high standards of the artist. For this reason, there are few artists who, like Sijtze, have chosen to specialise in this artistic discipline. Texts Cees Straus, Henk Heideveld, Sijtze Malda, Henk Hoogenstraaten “I am quite happy with the commercial success that I’ve been having. I can well remember the time before it arrived. However, in those days there was more time for relaxation and parties. Now, I feel a strong responsibility to consolidate the success that I’ve had. I’d probably become desperate if I suddenly stopped selling this well. Nevertheless, in my heart, I do remain insecure and am surprised that so many people want to own my work.” 72 pages 22 x 23 cm Hard cover (NL, ENG) ISBN 978-90-72736-51-2 € 25,00 U 256 Text Jos Schoots books 6 Ben Snijders Werken en dromen “To me the best things about the still life are its freedom of subject matter and the abundance of form and elements. With a still life, everything is possible. You can even paint a landscape or a nude into a still life. It offers you the chance of creating a world of your own with all the colours and shapes that carry a special meaning for you... and you can pick out objects, not just for their form, but for the associations and memories they carry; precious things. So you start off with an attic full of bottles and pitchers and the like, but that is quickly whittled down to about ten or twelve articles which keep you busy for years to come; then you choose maybe three or four of these for your still life… the endless combinations of these objects produce a new painting every time.” Foreword Hans van Seventer, Wim Ellens Texts Jan Jaap Heij, Koen Nieuwendijk, Evert Musch 160 pages 29 x 24 cm Hard cover (NL, ENG) ISBN 978-90-72736-15-4 € 39,00 U 210 Ben Snijders Werken en dromen, Numbered and signed Han van Hagen Etsen A lovely book with beautiful etchings by Han van Hagen. He is not so much concerned with beauty as with sincerity. A good painting is an honest painting, born from an undiluted urge for expression. But there is more. Postma’s method does not only reflect a most private expression of the most private emotions, but also a quest for the secret behind the material, for the effects of different layers of paint, for tension as opposed to balance. The book is illustrated with pictures of Gerriet Postma in his most beloved situation: at work in his studio. By 1924, he had adopted a figurative style influenced both by Picasso’s neoclassical paintings of the early 1920s, and, more especially, by Léger. Later in the decade, Willink developed a Magic Realist style related to the metaphysical paintings of Giorgio de Chirico. From 1935 until his death, Willink lived in Amsterdam. His realistically rendered paintings frequently represent somewhat disquieting scenes that unfold against the backdrop of imposing buildings. He also painted many portraits. Text H.L.C. Even though the dodo has been extinct for more than three hundred years, the bird still enjoys an immense popularity. The dodo figures in cartoons, and is to be seen pictured on bags, tablecloths, tshirts, ties and even postage stamps. However, in spite of this abundant media attention we still cannot be exactly sure of what the creature really looked like. A Giclée is an accurate, mechanically produced art reproduction. The consistently high quality is achieved by means of a combination of excellent inks (based on lightfast pigments), piezo print head technology (which allows a very precise dosage of the ink), and premium quality paper. A Giclée is not an original work of art, but an excellent reproduction of a work of art. Inspired by such art expressions of the past as icons and frescoes, Martin is like a poet who uses a modern abstract treatment of planes and surfaces to translate ideas, feelings and human experiences into a new metaphor. More recently Martin has produced a number of paintings with religious themes, some inspired by the Greek Orthodox tradition.
