Do Not Be Afraid to Dream of Great Things.” (H.H. Pope Francis) THE LATIN PATRIARCHATE The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem (LPJ) was restored in 1847; its main goal is to promote the best interest of the local communities it serves in. Today, the Patriarchal Diocese oversees about 90,000 faithful in four countries, including the Galilee, The Palestinian Authority, Jordan and Cyprus, covering a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, religions and traditions. Serving all with special emphasis on t INTRODUCTION Taybeh Taybeh is a Palestinian village located In the center of the West Bank,, only 30 km from Jerusalem, 40 km from Nablus and 20 km from Ramallah and Jericho. From its elevated site (920m) between biblical Samaria and Judea, it overlooks the desert wilderness, the Jordan Valley, Jericho and Dead Sea. Taybeh is one of the most ancient places in Palestine, dating back to the Bronze Age. Established by the Canaanites between 25002900 BC, Taybeh is mentioned in the Old Testament as Ofra (Joshua, Judges, I Samuel). It is Ephraim, the village in which Jesus chose to stay with His disciples before his Passion. The original Church of St George, built by the Byzantines In the 5th century and rebuilt by the Crusaders in the 12th century, lie in ruins on the eastern outskirts of Taybeh, behind the Melkite Church, which is called “El Khader.” Christian Community Living amidst Muslim villages, Israeli settlements and military roadblocks, Taybeh’s 1,300 inhabitants are intensely proud of their Christian heritage, their folklore group and Choir. the masses follow the liturgy in Arabic language and groups are welcomed by the Parish Priest and members of the community to celebrate Holy Mass together, as well as discuss the relevant aspects of Christians’ day to day life In the Holy Land. Today, Taybeh is the only Christian village in Palestine with 100% Christian population. the village maintains an ecumenical spirit, even celebrating Christmas and Easter together. 2 TAYBEH YOUTH CENTER , PALESTINE Latin Patriarchate School in Taybeh In 1869 a second school was established in it by the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem. This school was divided into two parts, one for boys and the other for girls. Twenty-five male students studied at the boys’ school and fifteen female students studied at the girls’ school. In 1966 the “two schools” were put together where boys and girls were able to study at it. In 1978 the school became a secondary one and that allowed many students from the neighboring villages to join it. The school consists of two floors, a yard and playgrounds for basketball, volleyball and handball. It comprises all the stages of learning, starts from the kindergarten up to the secondary stage, literary and scientific streams. Since 1978, 20 groups have been graduated. There are 31 teachers in the school, males and females. They work in the kindergarten and there are two nuns who teach religious education. It has a modern library that contains at least fifteen hundred books of both languages English and Arabic. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The youth in Taybeh constitute the majority of the population, yet it remains the most subjugated and marginalized. The youth suffer from many economic and social problems because of many reasons, such as lack of employment opportunities, Israeli blockade on the West Bank, lack of resources, etc. In addition to that, common social problems are a result of lack of recreation or entertainment centers and inadequate social facilities. This situation has led the youth to engage in many bad habits, such as smoking and drinking alcohol in cars at late hours in the night. In a study made by the Parish Priest and the LPJ, they indicated that the reason for problems caused by youth in Taybeh is the lack of entertainment centers for them, and that the establishment of youth center could alleviate the problems of the above-mentioned issues. It is essential for the LPJ to act as soon as possible to reverse the deteriorating situation of the youth, in order to maintain the sustenance of the growing Palestinian generations. Their potentials could be used for the development of the Palestinian State, if attention is paid to them. Recognizing this, the LPJ is intending to create a Youth Center in Taybeh for the youth from ages 8 to 25. The purpose of the project is to offer the youth and the community an adequate center to provide essential services for the young people. The center would also be available for the general community use. It is envisioned that the new facilities will be a welcoming and vibrant community space where the community, particularly young people, can meet, connect, interact, receive training, counseling and enjoy a range of social and recreational activities. SCOPE OF WORK The LPJ’s strategy is to create a fostering Youth Center in Taybeh for boys and girls respectively. Implementation will include rehabilitation of two existing rooms and kitchen, demolition works, rehabilitation of the outdoor garden, planting trees and flowers, relocation and provision of entertainment equipment, furniture, computers, text books and a library. TAYBEH YOUTH CENTER, PALESTINE 3 Once rehabilitation work is completed, rooms will be fitted with chairs, tables and furniture to prepare the center to start operating. The rooms will be used by the youth for different indoor recreational and educational activities, while the garden will function as an outdoor space for different plays and activities. The proposed project will motivate the youth towards behavior change and participation in socio-economic change in Taybeh. BENEFICIARIES The target beneficiaries of this project will be the youth of Taybeh, including the young who are in school, university students, graduates and young workers. The indirect beneficiaries of this project will be all the people of Taybeh and the community as a whole. EXECUTION/DURATION The local technical team have prepared all the necessary detail designs and budgets for the project. The project will require two months from staring date, aiming to be completed in 2016.
