Mgr Edward Babiś, PE teacher Lesson/activity topic Grade level Length of lesson/activity Health value of Nordic Walking. Learning the techniques of basic steps. Girls from the second and the third classes of Middle School. 45 min. Content standards / Curriculum objectives Students: · know what Nordic Walking is, · know the technique of wearing a stick glove and how to adjust the height of the sticks to the height of a person. The aims of the lesson: · teaching and learning the correct technique of Nordic Walking, · learning about health value of Nordic Walking, · Nordic Walking – a sport for everyone, · Suggesting active ways of spending free time. Brief description Meeting of the students: - checking the attendance, informing about the topic and the aims of the lesson, - noting the importance of safety rules, giving students the equipment (sticks), - warming – up using sticks: · front / back arms swings, · front / back arms circling, · legs swings, · steps forward leaning on sticks, · jumping exercises with sticks, · body swings holding sticks over a head, · jumping over the sticks. Learning and exercising the technique: 1. Demonstrating and explaining the technique (exercises are done on 50m distance). 2. Teaching the physical coordination of arms and legs – a long step with a twist of arms (sticks under the arms). 3. Teaching how to use right / left stick in relation to right / left foot. 4. Teaching how to lengthen the steps. Symmetrical work of arms. 5. Working in pairs – one student demonstrates the technique of Nordic Walking, the second one assesses it. They change and then, check and discuss the results of the lesson. 6. The full form of Nordic Walking with a teacher. Relaxing exercises, breathing exercises, series of bends with sticks in the fresh air. Activity procedures The activities were conducted so as to let the students practice and improve their skills of Nordic Walking. Methods: direct, imitative, analytical and combined. Students outcome Students had an opportunity to improve their walking skills in an amusing and competitive way. They could test their fitness too as well as spend a nice time outdoors. Feedback Such outdoor activities are particularly interesting to students. They like the idea of practicing and improving the skills of Nordic Walking, having great fun at the same time. It would be a good idea to organize such lessons regularly especially in spring and autumn because it could be an excellent occasion to observe the nature, too. —2—
