Stone I am so pleased to have the opportunity to thank the board and all the members for the honor of serving as President. The Museum provides an environment of learning and culture through its exhibits and programs to all of the community. The buildings, while old and historic, could not be more vibrant and alive. We are a unique asset which continues to grow in value as more families share their histories and themselves with us. We have so many of these friends from all over our state and from all over the world. I hope on your next visit to the Museum you have the opportunity to meet and talk with some of the other visitors. Our Openings are a perfect time to come with friends and enjoy an intellectually stimulating and entertaining social event that is not to be found anywhere else in our broad and diverse community. Last month we celebrated the new partnership with FIU at the opening of the Project Mah Jongg exhibit, which is a fantastic exhibit and will be here for several more months. The event was standing room only. We now have scholars of great renown enhancing our knowledge base and providing more to our programming and to our membership then we ever thought possible. We all gain so much from this addition. Miami is a place famous for its transience, as is Florida. Our role at the Museum, of telling the very human history of this State, seen through the eyes of one of its many immigrant groups, gives everyone much deserved roots in this place and in this time. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season and you all come with your visiting family and friends to the Museum. SO WHAT IS THE JEWISH MUSEUM OF FLORIDA? The JEWISH MUSEUM OF FLORIDA opened in 1995 in a former historic synagogue that housed the first congregation on Miami Beach. Built in 1936, the Henry Hohauser designed building that underwent a two-year restoration, boasts Art Deco features, a copper dome and 80 stained glass windows. In 2007, the Museum expanded into the original 1929 synagogue next door after a one-year restoration. Both buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008, the two buildings were connected with a skylighted bistro. The Museum is much more than beautiful buildings. It is a place that presents its own and traveling exhibits; sponsors cultural and educational programs; houses a Collections & Research Center reflecting 250 years of Florida Jewish history; and communicates Jewish history, art, culture and values to Jews and non-Jews alike in an informal mode. The Museum is also a place where Jews of all ages and stripes discover and reaffirm their rich heritage – thus helping to strengthen Jewish identity and ensure Jewish continuity. This all started with the traveling exhibit MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida (1990-1994), depicting Florida Jewish history from 1763 to the present, when Jews were first allowed to live in the Sunshine State. Thousands of photographs, artifacts and oral histories were gathered from families throughtout Florida and this collection continues now in the Museum, created as a result of the interest and support of the original MOSAIC project. Where the traveling exhibit was the launch, the JEWISH MUSEUM OF FLORIDA further delves into the state’s rich Jewish history of yesterday and today – for the future. Historic Partnership with Florida International University (FIU) In September 2012, following the approval of the Museum’s Board of Directors, Florida International University’s Board of Trustees and the Florida Board of Governors, the Museum began the process to become part of the FIU family. This historic partnership leverages the resources of the Museum and FIU, igniting a new era of interdisciplinary education and research focused on the history of the Jewish experience in Florida, the ways in which Florida Jews influence and are influenced by the cultural dynamics of Florida, the nation and the world, and issues of discrimination against all peoples in Florida throughout history. Through this partnership, we will expand the education of FIU students, faculty and the greater Florida community about the challenges of the immigrant experiences shared by all ethnicities in the State. 2 Whether your family has lived in Florida for eight generations, as some have, or just arrived – YOUR story is an important tile the MOSAIC. From page 1 As a long-time resident, Hollander felt that many of Miami’s best qualities were being ignored by the media, who grossly misrepresented the city as being filled with gangsters and drug wars, as portrayed in the popular television show Miami Vice. When one victim was found with a gold Rolex watch, the media subsequently reported on whether or not any other victims were found with Rolexes. In response, Hollander painted “Time Flies Over Miami,” a composition with a pelican and a Rolex. This piece, which launched her Miami Mosaic series, was her artistic statement that Miami has more to offer, such as its ecology and unique sub-tropical environment. Miami Mosaic is a work-in-progress, with more than 200 portraits created to date. Inez has been teaching and exhibiting in the South Florida community for more than 40 years. She has been involved with The Bass Museum School, WLRN, South Florida Art Center and Miami Watercolor Society and her work has been featured in American Artist Watercolor magazine and Palette Magazine. The exhibit will be on display through May 5, 2013, with the festive Members Only Opening Event held on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. FJHM... From page 1 The Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon sailed from Puerto Rico to Florida, landing in April 1513. He named the area La Florida after Pascua Florida, or the “Festival of Flowers,” in honor of the Easter season. The observance concludes in 2015, with the celebration of the 450th anniversary of the founding of St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest permanent settlement in the United States, established in 1565 by Spanish Admiral Pedro Menéndez de Aviles. The first school, first church, hospital and town hall in the United States were established in St. Augustine. The city was also the first melting pot of different cultures. Ferdinand and Isabella chose Catholicism to unite Spain and in 1478 asked permission of the pope to begin the Spanish Inquisition to purify the people of Spain. The Alhambra Decree, which ordered the expulsion of Jews, was issued in January 1492. Jews could not live anywhere in the world under Spanish rule. They had three choices: convert to Catholicism (becoming New Christians, Crypto Jews or Conversos), leave the country, or be killed. Since the discovery of Florida and the settlement of St. Augustine were during the Inquisition (1478-1834), were fleeing Jews part of these historic events? Someone needs to ask the question so this is not just a Catholic observance. The Opening Event will include the presentation of this year’s Avis Lee & Abraham Neiman Judaica Contest Winners for statewide artists’ original designs of Havdalah spice boxes. Just as these events predate the first permanent English RSVP by Feb. 1 to 786-972-3175 or info@jewishmuseum.com. settlement of Jamestown, Virginia in 1607, if Jews sailed with Ponce de Leon in 1513 (just as we know Jews sailed with Columbus) or with Menendez de Aviles in 1565, these facts predate 1654 when Jews arrived in New Amsterdam. Currently, the earliest documentation of Jews living in Florida is 1763. From 1513-1762, Spain owned Florida, so only Catholics could live here for those 250 years. Following the French-Indian War when the Treaty of Paris was signed in late 1762, Florida was ceded to Great Britain and people other than Catholics, including Jews, could settle. In early 1763, three Jews arrived in Pensacola, bought land and started businesses there. More than 25 years ago when Marcia Jo Zerivitz began researching and collecting material evidence on Florida Jewish history, she met with Dr. Eugene Lyon, then the director of The St. Augustine Foundation, who shared with her 16th century records of soldiers and settlers in St. Augustine that reflect Spanish Jewish names. Since that time, Zerivitz has been seeking funding and scholars to research her hypothesis that Jews may have lived in Florida 89 years before the commonly accepted date of 1654 when Jews first arrived in North America and 189 years before the first records of Jewish life in Florida. If documented, this would rewrite American Jewish history. Alex as Bride, Acrylic on Canvas, 30” x 24,” 2008. 4 The only known persons working on this project currently are members the St. Augustine Jewish Historical Society (SAJHS), led by Rabbi Merrill Shapiro. With the impending celebration of the 450th anniversary of the founding of St. Augustine, they rose to represent the Jewish component. Two of the world’s leading authorities on Eastern Jewish communities will explore the Jewish experience in Asia and Africa in a new course offered at JMOF-FIU. “The Jews of Asia and Africa” will be taught by FIU research professors Nathan Katz and Tudor Parfitt. Katz, who is Bhagwan Mahavir Professor of Jain Studies and director of FIU’s Program in the Study of Spirituality, spent many years living in South Asia. A recipient of four Fulbright research and teaching awards, he has played an influential role in interreligious dialogues between Jews and Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. A PERFECT MATCH The celebration of the merger of the Jewish Museum of Florida and Florida International University kicked off with a “crack, dot and bam” on October 15, 2012, at the festive opening of the PROJECT MAH JONGG exhibit. A standingroom only crowd was fascinated with the innovative exhibit on the history and culture of the game of mah jongg, as they enjoyed a delicious Chinese-style buffet and background music by an FIU student trio. Some of the guests were even inspired to become a live part of the exhibit, as they played a game of mah jongg at table in the center of the exhibit. The highlight of the evening was the program dedicating the historic partnership. JMOF President Elliot N. Stone likened the “marriage” of these two great institutions to Tevye’s description of “A Perfect Match” in “Fiddler on the Roof.” He remarked, “The synergy L-R: FIU Course instructors Professor Tudor Parfitt with his wife between JMOF and FIU’s shared missions will allow us to Olivia and Professor Nathan Katz. combine our expertise and resources to usher in a new era of The introductory class, on January 9, 2013 from 6:45-9:00 education, research and outreach that will have a lasting impact p.m., will be free and open to the public. This course expands on our Museum’s mission of the Jewish experience in Florida by exploring Jewish populations in Asia and Africa, including the Lemba of Zimbabwe, the Beta Israel of Ethiopia, and the Ibo of Nigeria. Asian communities include the Jews of Kochi, Mumbai and northeastern tribal peoples of India; Shanghai, China, a home in the 19th century to Sephardic Jews seeking business opportunities and refuge L-R: FIU President Mark B. Donated to the MOSAIC collection by Mrs. Rosalie Coleman of Jacksonville. On June 2, 2012, our Museum and the entire community lost a great leader, matriarch and mentor, Myra Farr. Born April 25, 1915 in Maine, Myra moved to South Florida with her family at the age of 16. Myra’s impact on our community during her seven decades of service is unparalleled. The dress was made in Jerusalem by Klein and Company for the designer Elanit and it cost $90. In 1973, as National Vice President of NCJW, Myra donated the gown for the Greater Miami Section’s Third Annual Fashion Spree Auction, at a price of $25. However, Myra was so reluctant to part with the dress, she wound up buying it back herself! She was a board member of the Museum and served in a leadership capacity for numerous organizations through her community service. The Museum is now the recipient of Myra’s extensive legacy of memorabilia that represents an historical record of both local and national organizations. This tallit, tallit bag, Shiloh prayer book and daily prayer book belonged to Howard Davis, who became a Bar Mitzvah at Congregation Beth David in 1936. Davis, a graduate of Miami Beach High School, served as a radio-navigator on a torpedo bomber during World War II. Aviation Radioman 2nd Class Davis received the Air Medal for attacking a Japanese battleship in Leyte Gulf, Philippines, October 24, 1944. Davis’ father, S. Charles Davis, ran a construction company on Miami Beach that built hotels during the 1920s-1940s. After World War II, the company rehabbed the hotels. She kept minutes of meetings from JMOF, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW); programs from every gala or luncheon she attended; speeches she delivered upon receiving or bestowing a countless number of awards – and this is only a small sample of the items that now enhance our Collection. One of the memorable artifacts is the gown that Myra wore when she escorted Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir into a banquet in Israel in 1971. 16 continued next column This photograph shows a Kalinin Jewish partisan unit (Bielski Group) on guard duty at an airstrip in the Naliboki Forest, Poland, c.1944. Riva Ginsburg’s parents, Yudis Koszczanska (standing center right) and Mordechai “Motke” Ginsburg, were members of the Bielski Group. Yudis Koszczanska (Judith Ginsburg) was born in Lida, Belarus in 1925 and during World War II she escaped into the woods and joined the Bielski Group of Jewish partisans. There she met her husband, Mordechai “Motke” Ginsburg (Marvin), who was born in Ivye, Belarus. She was the only one of her family to survive the Holocaust. Children Chaim and Riva were born in the Foehrenwald Displaced Persons Camp in Germany. In 1949, the family immigrated to the United States, taking up cattle ranching in Troy, NY. Riva Ginsburg is a retired Florida Atlantic University professor. FJHM... From page 4 MUSEUM NEWS Examining evidence that includes Menendez’ taking on “undocumented” passengers after leaving the harbor at Cadiz, Spain; the dates of the sighting of the Florida coastline and the first landing; the archaeological revelations of human remains at Fountain of Youth Park; the founder’s understanding of the native Timucuan as the supposed Ten Lost Tribes of Israel; the markers suggested by the Spanish Inquisition as to the characteristics of Conversos/New Christians and the anthroponomastic study of surnames, comparing them to known Sephardic names and names of those tried by the courts of the Inquisition, the SAJHS finds ample support for the hypothesis that Jews first came to what would become the United States along the northeast coast of Florida in 1565. Rabbi Shapiro said, “To be sure, the presence of Jews in Florida from 1565, unlike the experience of the Jewish refugees from the Inquisition in Recife, Brazil who came to New Amsterdam in 1654, was neither continuous nor populated by anyone other than those whose religious and cultural identities were ruthlessly suppressed with brutality, threats of violence, torture and death. Nonetheless, the SAJHS is greatly concerned with the future of our past and vigorously labors on in the pursuit of the repatriation of the Jewish souls who came to these shores in the days of the Spanish Inquisition.” Since the Museum’s partnership with Florida International University (FIU) and the arrival on the faculty of Dr. Tudor Parfitt, there is enthusiastic interest in pursuing the question of Conversos in St. Augustine in the 16th century. Dr. Parfitt said, “It is not yet certain if the first groups of Spaniards to set foot in Florida in the 16th century contained any New Christians/Conversos or not. However the balance of probability is that they did.” Tudor Parfitt, the new President Navon Professor of Sephardi Studies at FIU, assisted by Olivia Autolino, will attempt to ascertain if there were any Conversos among the early settlers in St. Augustine. Working along with the SAJHS, they plan to examine archives in the United States, Spain, Italy and Cuba in an attempt to discover when the first Jew settled in what is now the United States. About Florida Jewish History Month (FJHM) in the observance. The Museum’s FJHM curriculum is approved by the Miami-Dade County Public School Board and distributed to schools in Florida’s 67 counties. The educational materials for FJHM and a speech for anyone to deliver to a group can be found on the Museum’s website: www.jewishmuseum.com. As part of the free public celebration on January 6, Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant is providing key lime pie, designated in 2006 as the official state pie. Jennie and Joe Weiss, the founders of Joe’s, were the first Jews to settle on Miami Beach in 1913 and the business is still run by the family. Please bring family and friends to join in this historic conversation on January 6, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. Make your reservation now to 786-972-3175 or info@jewishmuseum. CONSIDER A HOLIDAY YEAR-END CONTRIBUTION TO YOUR MUSEUM Please consider the Jewish Museum of Florida in your yearend charitable gifts. Your donation will help to sponsor a program, fund a future exhibit, maintain our ever expanding collections, as well as support Jewish continuity, culture and our statewide outreach.
