August 2015 - Belted Galloway Society
August 2015 Th e US Beltie News A PUBLICATION OF THE BELTED GALLOWAY SOCIETY, I N C . © Kathi Jurkowski (IL) President Michelle Ogle The Belted Galloway Premium Sale is returning to Louisville for the sixth consecutive year! Our sale offers breeders a chance to sell their premium genetics, and our buyers benefit from the opportunity to buy premium cattle, semen and embryos that they can add to their breeding programs. Last year we changed the format of the sale and held it following our Annual meeting and it was a resounding success! The sale will again be held following the Annual General Meeting Tuesday, November 17, 2015. The live cattle lots will be stalled and available for buyers to view during the day in the barns but the auction will actually be held during the meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn. So the animals will not go through a sale ring. We will have video footage of all lots being sold at the Hilton Garden Inn. Tommy Carper from Indiana will return as our auctioneer and bidding can be done in person, over the phone, or by prior arrangements. We are accepting nominations through September 12, 2015. All entry nominations must be purebred registered Belted Galloway cattle (no Appendix/recorded will be accepted). We will also accept other nominations. For example: a right to flush, embryos, semen and any other unique lots that are approved by the sale management. Breeders who do not have a consignment in the Premium Sale are invited to participate by advertising in the sale catalog. The catalog will be sent to the homes of all of our members. (Nomination forms and advertising information will be available on www.beltie.org). We will sell a selective, but limited, number of bulls! To sell a bull, consigners must also sell one female lot. A $100.00 (per lot) fee must be included with each nomination form. Please send a separate form for each animal nominated. All nomination fees will be credited to the consignors account and applied to their sale expenses. Any animal cataloged, but not sold, will forfeit their nomination fee. Animals may be substituted provided the replacements meet the sale requirements. Nomination fees will be refunded if the animal/item is withdrawn before it is cataloged, or if the nomination is not approved for the sale. Any animal bred, but not calved by the day of the sale, must be examined by a veterinarian and a letter must be submitted with the stated results that confirm the pregnancy on the day of the sale. If an animal is AI bred, a semen certificate must also be submitted by the seller. All bulls over 12 months of age must have a breeding soundness exam in order to sell. No animal will be sold without: a paid entry fee, original an registration certificate, a signed transfer form, and a breeding or semen certificate (if required). Transfer forms will be available the day of the sale for the consignor’s signature. Reminder: the $100 nomination fee, a color photo, and a registration certificate must accompany the nomination application. Pregnancy check information and semen testing can be submitted until the day of the sale. Remit all information to: Vic Eggleston N8603 Zentner Road, New Glarus, WI 53574. Make checks payable to: Belted Galloway Society, Inc. If you have any questions or inquiries about consigning or advertising, please contact me: Michelle Ogle, southdowncattle@gmail.com or call (908) 781-5576. AUGUST PAGE The Great Lakes Belted Galloway Association Field Day Kathi Jurkowski, GLBGA Public Relations When I think of the Great Lakes Belted Galloway Association field day, the first word that comes to my mind is camaraderie. It is so important to have this type of an event because we often don't have time to visit with other breeders due to the fact that we are busy on our farms or showing our cattle. It was a very enjoyable and educational weekend at the Doug and Sherry Abney’s Red Barn Farms in Bargersville, Indiana. Approximately 50+ Belted Galloway breeders attended the field day and many arrived early on Friday evening for a welcome reception. The morning program included marketing, cattle breeding decisions, pasture management and weed identification. After lunch we enjoyed a tour of the Red Barn pastures and how they manage them. It was a beautiful day, although we had several pop-up showers during our wagon tour and we all got very wet. With the beginning of every shower, we all laughed that much more! We were all intrigued with Doug Abney’s unique water Canadian Livestock Records Corporation 2417 Holly Lane Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA K1V 0M7 Betty Foti betty.foti@clrc. ca Phone 877-833-7110 Ext. 310 Lisa Hutt lisa.hutt@clrc.ca Phone 877-833-7110 or 613-731-7110, Ext. 312 Fax 613-731-0704 Office Hours 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday to Friday. wagon invention (see the picture above). As Doug rotates his cattle to each pasture, along goes the water wagon. It even includes storage for minerals! I think Doug should patent his invention. I was delighted to hear the presentation by Angela, Allie and Dougie Abney about how they market their Beltie beef. Angela began a direct marketing business during her high school years as her FFA project. The business has thrived by selling cuts of beef and pork at farmers’ markets throughout the Indianapolis area. Of course we were served Beltie beef for lunch and dinner. Hamburgers for lunch and dinner included steaks that were marinated in a secret sauce that tasted divine. An auction was held and over $2000 was raised to benefit the junior program in Area Five. It was a fun weekend! I think I saw more Beltie pictures than grandchildren pictures—well almost. What a wonderful group of Belted Galloway breeders who came to learn and share. All with the common goal to better our breed. Our 2016 field day hosts will be Jill and Matt Messmer in Rock Springs, Wisconsin.
