Skysales Aviation June 2009
Heli heaven
Hundreds of square feet of everything
to do with helicopters made for a
rather idyllic setting for Skysales
Aviation’s Branch Manager Glen Reid
and Flightline Aviation’s Marketing and
Sales Manager Chris Barry.
The two were part of the 17,000 plus
crowd that poured through the doors at
the HAI HELI-EXPO 2009 in Anaheim,
California over three days.
The highlight for Glen was flying the
MD902 Explorer – a medium size twin
engine helicopter that is the “pride of
the MD range”.
“This is our main opportunity to see
everyone at one time,” says Glen, who
has now been to three
such expos.
“There’s never been one in New
Zealand yet…but we are most definitely
working on getting a demo here in the
near future. They’re brilliant helicopters.”
The 2009 expo featured
more than 500 exhibitors
showcasing products
and services, including
65 helicopters on the
showroom floor, covering
half a million gross square
feet of space.

“We build relationships
at an event like this – it’s
just an awesome thing to
go to.”
HELI-EXPO is recognised as the world’s
largest trade show dedicated to the
international helicopter community and
one of the top 200 largest trade shows
in the United States. It attracts people
from more than 85 countries – some
there to exhibit and others just to look.
More than 20% come from outside of
the US.
Plans are already underway for HELIEXPO 2010 which is scheduled for
February 21-23 in Texas.

The Skysales Aviation’s Branch
Manager and a number of his
customers got the nod to see the new
R66 in the air at the Robinson factory in
Torrance.
Over recent years
there have been a few
announcements – some
official and others not so
official – about the R66. In
March 2007 the Robinson
Helicopter Company
announced plans for the
production of the R66 – a
five seater similar to the
very popular R44 but with
size, power and capacity
modifications. While the R66 is some
time away from being available on the
open market, the Robinson Helicopter
Company is hopeful of having the R66
certification completed late 2009 or
early 2010.
A select gathering to celebrate the new R66.
The Robinson Helicopter Company
is the largest manufacturer of civilian
helicopters in the world, producing
in excess of 8,000 aircraft worldwide,
with nearly 70% of its total production
exported.

MD finding new ways to meet
customers’ needs and desires
MD Helicopters set a new record last
year.
The company manufactured and
delivered more than 50 aircraft last
year – the best performance since
2000 when it delivered 38 aircraft,
and the most since 1993 when it
was still part of McDonnell Douglas
Corporation.
Under the direction of Chief Executive
Lynn Tilton, MD Helicopters also had
its busiest December on record with
17 aircraft completed. And for the first
time since Patriarch Partners, LLC
purchased the company, in 2005, the
financial performance is positive.
“The year over year improvements are
a credit to the hard work and dedication
of our employees who labour each day
to produce the finest rotor aircraft in the
industry,” says Lynn.
Among customers taking delivery
in December were Chris and Ann
Burrows of Walker Creek Ranch in
Casper, Wyoming, and Frans van Bakel
and Vicky Riepen of VB Logistics in
Overpelt, Belgium.
The Burrows will use their new MD530F
on their two sheep and cattle ranches
that cover more than 30,000 acres.
An MD520N at Skysales Aviation.
Chris is both a pilot and FAA certified
airframe and power plant mechanic.
Their ranches include high elevations,
high density altitudes and remote
rugged terrain. The MD530F, noted for
hot and high performance and ease
of maintenance in the field, is ideally
suited for such topography.
Chris rates his new aircraft “the best
helicopter in the world”.
Helicopter pilots Frans van Bakel and
Vicky Riepen will use their new MD520N

New look for MD
HELI-EXPO 2009 was the launch pad
for MD Helicopters’ new brand image.
The new campaign was unveiled at the
big California gathering and included,
among a long list of goodies, a new
logo and website –

The goal of the new branding is to make
it easier to identify MD Helicopters’
products and services, making
everything far more enjoyable for their

pilots in addition to courier and lift work.
Their heliport in Overpelt is close to a
highly populated residential area where
noise is a major concern. They selected
the MD520N for its reduced noise
levels, safety, agility and power.
“The love of our aircraft and the
excitement it creates when delivered
is what keeps me devoted to this
company,” says Lynn Tilton. “We have
rebuilt this company from the customer
backward – finding new ways to meet
the customers’ needs and desires. We
continue to raise the bar, and that is
what makes this company exciting.”
Record-breaking times for Robinson
Robinson Helicopter’s R44 has
proved a big winner for this
successful global company.
Robinson, considered to be the
world’s leading manufacturer of
civilian helicopters, continues
to sell the aircraft in record
breaking numbers.
The Raven II, a more powerful
version of the original R44,
now accounts for 60% of the
company’s aircraft sales, with
the R44, later designated the
Raven I, accounting for around
20% of aircraft sales.
There were 164 R22 aircraft
produced in 2008, meaning it
still maintains its niche in an
increasingly competitive market.

Robinson broke its own record last year producing 893 civilian
helicopters, flying past the 823 manufactured in 2007.
The company’s focus for 2009 will continue to be product
development and maintaining its record-breaking
production.

Specialist team at the ready
Skysales Aviation’s dedicated
engineering team are reaping the
rewards of hard work.
Headed by James McNutt, the
engineering division is now maintaining
several aircraft, including servicing the
fleet of a major commercial operator.
Skysales Aviation’s Branch Manager
Glen Reid says the workshop, which
was launched last year in response to
strong customer demand, offers full
service and parts for MD Helicopters
and Robinson Helicopters.
Skysales Aviation’s close relationships
with factories in the United States allows
them quick delivery of any parts they
don’t already have in their extensive
warehouse.
“Turnaround is critical in this business,”
says Glen. “We want our clients back in
the air as soon as possible.”
In stock are parts for the Robinson 22
and 44 models, and MD500 series,
including main rotor blades, tail rotor
blades, drive shafts, landing gear skids,
windows and transmissions.
The company’s engineers specialise
in rebuilds and have extensive industry
experience.
