This will be our 17th consecutive production sale, the second time
hosted at Colorado State University. We have supported the CSU Legends
of Ranching sale for many years and we continue our support through
our intern and work program. Almost all of our employees over the years
Ken Matzner & Sam Shoultz have been CSU Equine Science graduates, as you can see, we strongly
support the CSU Equine Science Program. Sam is also on the advisory
board at the CSU Equine Reproduction Lab.
We breed about 70 of our own mares annually using 8 stallions that we have raised as well. Our
horses have done very well on the AQHA show circuit, mostly in the cattle events, and are being
shown by Luke Jones, Jay Wadhams, and JD Yates.
We invite you to attend our Production Sale hosted at CSU. Bobby and Sharon Lee have joined us
as guest consignors.
Sincerely,
Sam and Ken

Regarding foals in the sale: We put a lot of effort getting foals ready to be weaned, making sure they are eating hay
and grain and are used to being away from their moms. They are in good condition and it is our expectation that
you take the foal when the sale is over. If travel arrangements you have made with KeSa involve your foal going back
to the ranch, the foal will still be weaned. This is the policy unless otherwise stated.
Loading out: Horses can be loaded out after the sale Saturday or on Sunday morning. Present your yellow slip to
sale personnel. Special circumstances may be made only with KeSa at the buyers expense and in writing.
NOTE: Before You Buy - Please ask about the worming/vaccination schedule and anything else you would like to
know about each horse.
WHEN THE GAVEL FALLS THE HORSE BELONGS TO THE NEW OWNER. Any extra fees from that time forward for
vaccination, vet/medical, farrier, transport, international shipping, if and when the horse is in KeSa’s care, will be the
responsibility of new owner. If travel arrangements have been made with KeSa that involve your horse going back to
the ranch, the following schedule/fees apply: After 10 days - $4/day • After 30 days - $10/day
Above mentioned fees must be paid before horse can be released.
Thanks for coming to the sale (and for your understanding in these matters)

Our program is three pronged. We run line bred Driftwoods, line bred Blue Valentines, and the proven golden cross, Driftwood
X Blue Valentine. We `weave’ these bloodlines back and forth utilizing our eight stallions and 60-70 mares, some line bred,
some utilizing the blended bloodlines. We feel that this gives us individuals that embody the best attributes of both bloodlines.
This blend has a long history of working and producing top notch performance horses. Red Man by Joe Hancock was often
bred to daughters of Driftwood, and these Driftwood daughters were often out of mares by King (P234). In the background of
many of our Driftwood mares, there were crosses to Poco Bueno by King (P234), and then these resulting mares were bred to
a Driftwood Ike (by Driftwood) son that had running blood on his dam’s side. This running blood went back to Clabber, which
goes back to Lone Star, which ties this bloodline to the Blue Valentine line through his dam, Beautys Dream. This `weaving’ of
the Driftwood X Blue Valentine bloodlines works because of the common ancestors involved, that were proven producers of
top using horses. The only stallion that we did not raise is Driftwood Sensation, and he was chosen when still on his mother, to
add some differing lines of both Driftwood and Joe Hancock. Driftwood Sensation goes back to Roan Hancock by Joe Hancock
(said to be a brother of Red Man), and War Chief by Joe Hancock, and two Driftwood offspring not related to Driftwood Ike.
Easy Keeper by Driftwood is out of a Waggoner mare, and Brown Beulah by Driftwood is out of a King (P234) daughter. We
have carefully added some Peppy San, Sugar Bars, and King Fritz to this mix of Driftwood X Hancock bloodlines.
MR Junewood is the result of a carefully planned blending of two different mare lines of Driftwood Ike sons (Driftwood Ike
is by Driftwood). Both sire and dam lines go back to Joe Hancock, but the sire line (Wayward Ike) is closer to Little Joe (by
Traveler). The mare line (Junewood Miss) goes back to the running blood of the immortal Clabber, a direct tie through Lone
Star to the Blue Valentine lineage. The mare line also goes back to Poco Bueno by King (P234) by Zantanon, by Little Joe,
another tie in, further back using different mare lines. We have created a concentrated 25% Driftwood pedigree, but have
added enough outside blood to keep it healthy, and still tie in with the Little Joe blood. We have also thrown in a background
cross to Blue Valentine’s ancestors. This is what we mean when we say that we `weave’ our bloodlines.
To insure the success of these three programs, we have to maintain individuals from both lines that are high % and high
quality to perpetuate our program. A horse must be exceptional to stay in our breeding program and our goal is to have
every horse meet that standard. As breeders, we believe that we have the responsibility to constantly improve our animals, not
just to multiply them.
You may sit on a horse’s back, but you truly ride their mind.

“I have been riding KESA horses since 2008, and have saddled quite a few.
We have won multiple year end titles, and wins at major shows, including AQHA
World Show Champions and Reserve Champions, as well as Super Horse awards,
and Congress wins, all in the toughest open division classes. These horses and their
performing offspring are very consistent, hold true to their bloodlines, and are very
trainable with good dispositions. The important thing is that their performance
record speaks volumes about their ability. They can, and do win.”

What makes our program different? We believe if you say you have a performance
horse, you have to prove that statement. The only way we know to do this is to place our
horses in the most competitive venue available - the Open Division AQHA shows, competing
against the top riders and horses in the nation. Our show horses can also cross over to the
rodeo arena and win money. That makes a statement about the versatility of our program.
We are willing to spend the money to promote our horses to prove their performance ability.

We would like to thank Sam for inviting us to the KESA sale, but mostly we want
to thank him for raising such wonderful horses. When we chose a breeding
program as the direction we wanted to go with our horses, we knew what
we wanted and needed. We needed a gentle stud horse and the bloodline we
preferred was Blue Valentine. Sam hooked us up with Smokin Blue Hayes.
Smokey has the best disposition we could
ask for, our grandson has been riding him
since they were both three years old, and the
granddaughters love going to feed so they can sit on him. He is kind to all. He passes
this trait on to his colts. We enjoy working, and riding them as we have been able
to produce some very nice team roping and ranch horses as well as some very nice
replacement fillies. The right disposition and conformation along with the willingness
and trainability have enabled us to have some great horses to offer you. As God
continues to direct us and we do our best to follow, we have
had the oppotunity to raise horses that we both love and are
proud of. Again, thank you KESA for helping us out with great horses and advice and having us
at your sale. Check us and the horses out at B-S Lee Quarter Horses on Facebook. Thanks go out
ahead to those who come to and also buy horses at the Kesa Sale.

Foundation Bloodlines + Modern Performance = Rock Solid Horses
After graduating from Colorado State University in 2003 with a
BS in Animal Science, I began working at KeSa Quarter Horses
where I was a trainer for three years. After leaving KeSa I moved
to Collbran, CO with my first mare in tow, given to me by Sam
and Ken, to start a new chapter in my life and eventually create
Granite Performance Horses. While at KeSa, I was introduced
to the Blue Valentine and Driftwood bloodlines and began to appreciate the diversity of
these genetics. While training at KeSa, I was able to ride and explore the versatility of these
horses, which has given me the foundation for building my own program which is focused
on producing versatile horses. From my stallion, Blue Partee Fox, who is a proven AQHA
rope horse, to my mares, which all have been ridden English and Western, I strive to
produce horses that can go any direction any given day and look good doing it.
Big thanks to Sam and Ken for inviting
me to participate in their production
sale. I am saving my foal crop this year
to make riding horses for the future.
look for some of my horses at their sale

Joe Hancock was registered as number 455 in the American Quarter Horse
Association. He was foaled 1926, A brown stallion, registered as bred by John Jackson
Hancock. His sire was a son of Peter McCue named John Wilkens and his dam was a
half Percheron mare that was raced. When he was registered, he was owned by the
Tom L. Burnett Estate in Fort Worth, Texas, which later became the 6666 Ranch.
Joe Hancock had a streak on his face and, when grown, stood 15.3 hands high. He
raced in match races for a number of years, although no official records of these
races exist. All of Joe Hancock’s racing took place before the formation of the AQHA
in 1940.By the time the AQHA was founded, Joe Hancock was busy siring ranch
horses on the 6666 Ranch. He sired seven foals that earned their Race Register of
Merit with the AQHA.He also sired two foals that earned their Performance Register
of Merit with the AQHA – Brown Joe Hancock and Red Man.
Joe Hancock
Joe Hancock died in 1943 and in 1992 he was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. In
2007 Western Horseman magazine chose Joe Hancock as number three on their list
of top ten ranch horse bloodlines.

Joe Hancock was a son of the explosively fast John Wilkens, by Peter
McCue. Joe Hancock was raced for close to five years, and it was said
that he never was defeated at ¼ mile, and rarely at ½ mile. Defeating
a colt owned by Tom Burnett landed him at the Burnett ranch, as Tom
liked to own the fastest horses that were in his area. Joe Hancock lived
out his years at the Burnett Ranch as a breeding stallion. His foals were
known to be rugged, have speed and the ability to stay sound, and
have an eagerness to work a cow, as a result, his genes are to be found
in many of today’s popular bloodlines. Red Man was probably his best
known son, he was ROM in racing, sired foals prized for cutting, ranch
work, for being top rope horses with AAA running ability, and they were
loaded with cow sense.
The blending of Red Man with a daughter of Valentine was no accident.
Valentine was a son of the highly regarded Lone Star, out of a Little Joe
(by Zantanon) mare. Lone Star sired a line of horses that are known even
today. A daughter produced Clabber, a sensational running horse, a son
was tied for eighth place (1951-1956) as a leading sire of halter horses,
and during the same time period, he was in third place as a leading sire
of halter class winners. Lone Star was the sire of Rainy Day, the grand
sire of Waggoners Rainy Day (P13), who was the sire of Barbara B, the
celebrated running mare. Clearly, this line could look good, and run too.
© 2014 KeSa Quarter Horses
The renowned Valentine, by Lone Star, received speed from his sire line,
and his dam line also, she being a daughter of Little Joe, by Traveler, the
head of a long family line of noted runners. Many top ropers also used
Valentine bred horses, and this was the reason for breeding Red Man to
a daughter of Valentine. This mating produced Blue Valentine, a product
of two known lines of cow horses with speed.
Blue Valentine started life as a competition roping horse, and he needed the speed and the desire to work cattle as well. He carried all of the
attributes of both sides of his pedigree, his dam probably as important
as his sire. The cross of Traveler bloodlines onto the Peter McCue bloodlines has been the backbone, and produced many top using and sprinting horses. Blue Valentine was often bred to daughters of Plenty Coup,
a son of Texas Blue Bonnet, another son of Joe Hancock. This cross
produced Gooseberry, the sire of Plenty Try, the sire of Gerries Valentine,
out of a Blue Valentine daughter, Gerries Blue. Plenty Try’s dam had four
AAA grandsires, and was the full sister to proven performance horses.
We have both Plenty Try and Gerries Valentine daughters as important
members of our broodmare band. The mare, Gerries Blue, also carried
the important bloodlines of King (P234) which also goes back to Little
Joe, as well as Oklahoma Star (P6) and Chief (P5), a real balance of the
old blood lineage.

Our concentration of Driftwood blood started with the Stanley and Randy
Johnston mares. These mares were a blend of Driftwood, Poco Speedy, Orphan
Drift, Sak Em San (son of Peppy San), Doc’s Jack Frost (sire of Sun Frost) and
Captain Crusade. We bred these mares to our Blue Valentine stallions.

Driftwood, foaled in Texas in 1932, was a great performer, a match
race horse, a top all event rodeo horse, and maybe more importantly,
had the ability to sire foals that also were great performers, and
they, in turn, had the genetic strength to pass these traits down.
Driftwood blood is still highly sought after in today’s performance
horses. Driftwood died in 1960, and his best known, and perhaps best
son, Driftwood Ike was born in 1950. Ike was the result of the now
`very proven’ Driftwood X Joe Hancock cross, his dam being a grand
daughter of Joe Hancock. Driftwood Ike was a very successful rope
horse, and a great sire of rope, speed event and barrel race horses.
Driftwood Ike’s most prominent son was probably Orphan Drift, his
dam going back to the old running bloodlines of Joe Reed II and
Clabber. This was the proven cross of cowhorse blood on top of
running blood, and is still used today. Orphan Drift was another
successful rodeo roping event horse, and was used in several events.
Orphan Drift proved to be quite pre potent, and sired many horses
of great ability. MR Junewood, 192 AQHA open performance points
in three events(KESA Quarter Horses) is a result of the strong genetics
of Orphan Drift, and another proven Driftwood Ike son, Wayward Ike,
whose dam also had running blood in her background. Once again,
MR Fritz Wood

we have the cowhorse X running blood cross, and MR Junewood
carries it on both sides of his pedigree.
Driftwood Sensation is a linebred Driftwood stallion that infuses
differing lines of Joe Hancock and Driftwood into our breeding mix.
He adds Joe Hancock sons Roan Hancock and War Chief and the
Driftwood son Easy Keeper, and the Driftwood daughter Brown Beulah
to our blending of bloodlines. This adds bloodline concentration with
more genetic strength overall.
MR Fritz Wood, a son of MR Junewood, is having a successful show
career on the open AQHA circuit. As of July 2014 he has over 700
points in four events and won over $25,000. He won the AQHA Open
World Champion Jr Heeling shown by Jay Waddams and AQHA Open
World Reserve Champion Jr Heading shown by Luke Jones. He has
Driftwood Ike on the top side plus the Driftwood daughter Judy Sue,
and Partee Doc, King Fritz, Captain Crusade, Leo and the Driftwood
daughter, Oakwood on the bottom. This gives Fritz the strong blend
of several top cowhorse bloodlines, plus he has mixed in the speed
bloodlines of Par Three, Captain Crusade and Leo. Fritz continues to
prove the adaptability of these modern style foundation horses.

‘RKR’ was saved as a replacement for his sire, Rojo Valentine. He has 5 crosses
to Blue Valentine (34.4% Blue Valentine), plus Plenty Coup 2x, and
Texas Blue Bonnet 3x. He shows a lot of refinement, and that seems to
pass to his foals. ‘RKR’ has line breeding strength, plus enough outcross blood
to be a strong breeder and we are pleased with the foals he sires.

We bought Smokey from KESA Quarter Horses in 2007. We were looking for
a gentle, well-mannered stallion to start our quarter horse operation and we
found him. Smokey has a wonderful disposition as well as excellent conformation and color, and we are well pleased with him as well as his colts. Smokey is a
3/4 brother to Blue Fox Hancock, and has been trained in heading and heeling.
His disposition is passed on to his colts which makes them very trainable and
easy to be around. Smokey is 31.125% Blue Valentine as well as Leo, Texas Blue

outside, rides in a good frame, and really wants to have a big stop. He has the mental
and physical abilities to be a performance horse, and Luke would be happy to talk
about keeping him in performance training. He is sired by multiple award winner,
Blue Fox and is out of a ½ sister to Driftwood Sensation, definite performance blood

Speedy is good minded, super athletic, easy to

and Luke would continue with him, if you desired.
We raised his sire (now deceased) that produced

This was a hard decision to enter this nice
stallion in the sale. Over the years, his offspring
have sold for thousands of dollars. His foals are
good natured, big, stout, using kinds of horses
that have a big stride and a willing work ethic.
He produces very nice babies when paired with
shorter heavier kinds of mares, and the foals
will be a rainbow of colors. We raised him, his
sire, and dam, and still have his dam, and she
has #53 in this year’s sale sired by Blue Fox. Luke
Jones roped heads and heels on this horse as
a youngster, says he rode good, was very good
minded, and would only need a refresher course
if you wanted to rope on him. Great pedigree,
seven crosses to Blue Valentine, and enough
outcross bloodlines to keep his genetics strong.
