MAY 2016 | FITNESS MONTH EVENTS www.up4health.org Walk the Mighty Mackinac Big Bay Relay May 21, 2016, 8:00 AM Marquette County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Hawley St., Marquette, MI Join the Noquemanon Trail Network in celebrating the 39th annual Big Bay Relay kicking off at the Kaufman Sports Complex parking lot! Start time is 8:00 am with the finish at the Thunder Bay Inn, Big Bay. Teams are composed of five runners for adults and up to seven for youth teams. Registration fees are $120 per team before May 1st and $140 after May 1st. Registration divisions include five person all-female, all-male, or mixed teams and seven person junior division teams. For more information, contact Amy Micks at 906-474-9001. 13th Annual Mackinac Memorial Bridge Run May 25, 2016 Gear Up for an Active Summer with the 13th Annual Mackinaw Memorial Day Bridge Run! Being one of the only two unique opportunities of the year runners are allowed to run the "Mighty Mac" will be this year on May 28, 2016. The other possibility, being the Fall Colors Bridge Run held October 8, 2016. Runners must register in advance and be able to run a minimum of 12 minutes per mile to race in the event. Wells State Park – Welcome back campers! May 28th 2016 Wells State Park, N7670 Highway M-35, Cedar River, MI Join the Wells State Park staff and Friends Group as they welcome back campers for the 2016 camping season and celebrate Memorial Day weekend! There is no better way to kick off the camping season and enjoy a holiday than to sit back and relax at one of your favorite Michigan State Parks! Enjoy the afternoon with a potluck with family and friends. Bring a dish to pass and your favorite camping tales! Pollinators Gardening May 14, 2016 Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, 33303 Headquarters Rd., Ontonagon, MI Learn the how to plant a pollinator's garden and the importance of native plants to wildlife. You will work with a master gardener to plan for the creation of a butterfly garden at your home. Then you will help plan native landscape plantings for the three park entrance signs in the Union Bay area. Students will leave with a Midwest Butterfly Garden seed packets and 2-3 small native shrubs to plant at home and help the pollinators. Class registration deadline is May 1. Washington, Marquette, MI Fresh herbs offer an easy way to add both seasoning and nutrition to our food at the same time. In addition to being nutritionally dense, they add flavor, so you’re less likely to add salt or sugar to the dish. How to use the herbs, however, is a question asked a lot. This class will feature recipes that will utilize a wide variety of fresh herbs, and are so good you might just want to start your own little herb garden. Northern Italian Spring Dinner May 24 & May 31, 2016, 6:00-8:00 PM Marquette Food Co-op, 502 W. Washington, Marquette, MI Join Louise Berndt and Co-op staff to create a Venetian dinner from appetizer to dessert, and all the courses in between. The dinner will utilize seasonal produce and meat done in the Northern Italian style. Samples of wine pairing for the meal will also be offered.
