Happy New Year everyone! Greetings from a very wet Kentucky!
Articles
I happily report that the ABC continues to operate in the black. The coming
year will be another challenge, but I am confident that we are on a path of
continued growth. My goals this year are to continue to rebuild our
membership and to publish the long awaited Studbook. The economy
continues to show improvement and, with that, maybe our efforts to sell
Curly horses will do so as well.

I would like to thank Marlene and Bruce Tilson for representing the
American Bashkir Curly Horse at the Canadian Royal Agricultural Winter
Fair. This is a test of endurance, lasting more than a week. I can’t imagine
how exhausted they must have been when they returned home!
On a more serious note, I want to thank those of you who defended the
ABCR and its Board members against the verbal assault in the online chat
groups. I appreciate your efforts, although I am sad to think that this
ugliness was in such a public forum. This kind of negativity does nothing
but hurt the breed in the eyes of the public. Our horses deserve better.
You deserve better. The folks willing to volunteer their time to this Registry,
deserve better!
Respectfully yours,
Melinda Martino, President
Reminder: Let’s put the Curly Horse in the
National Cowgirl Museum’s Hall of Fame!
Isn’t it about time Curly reached the Hall of Fame, in Texas? We are
planning to nominate Sunny Martin for the National Cowgirl Museum Hall
of Fame. Not only will this give recognition to her many contributions to the
beginnings of the ABC Registry, but will also acknowledge the Registry in a
public forum, give us name recognition, and of course be great advertising
for the Registry. Angie Gaines has already submitted her nomination, but
needs your support in the form of letters, which will be discussed by the
Board of the Hall of Fame. Please be sure to support this effort! Write your
letter today and send to Angie at 7480 CR 4095, Kaufman, Texas, USA
75142 or email angie@goldencurlsranch.com. She will forward them to the
appropriate address. For more information:

Toronto’s Royal Agricultural Winter Fair
In November 2011, Tall Trees Curlys once again participated in Toronto's Royal Agriculture Winter Fair, a
highlight of which is the Royal Horse Show. This annual event runs for 10 days each November, and is held at
the Canadian National Exhibition grounds in downtown Toronto, Canada. Bruce Tilson hosted the booth, and
welcomed a large number of current owners and Curly enthusiasts, while also promoting the breed to those who
had never heard of Curly horses or who were unaware of their many attributes. Here are pictures from the event:

The Wonder of the Curly Horse
By June Cicero – Neustadt, Ontario, Canada
I am the new owner of a Curly mare called Lucy. We’ve been together just over a month but already the ties are
strong, at least for me...I’m not sure about her. I have owned my own horse for the past 14 years. I love horses,
riding and riding vacations. I’m not particular about breed or colour; I just want a short, smart, solid, smooth
partner.
My husband and I were in the market for new horses, as we had sold our 2 riding horses before leaving British
Columbia, Canada, in April. We had our new ‘horse’ property and were keen to have horses back in our yard
and our lives. Thankfully, we were able to reconnect with a former trail buddy who invited us to join a three-day
ride the end of September. My friend knew the style of horse I preferred and set me up with Lucy for the ride.
At first sight, I was sceptical: I’m not fond of pintos, especially those with more white than colour. But her face
wasn’t bald and she didn’t have any blue eyes, so that was a plus. And she was very good under saddle – not
complicated, mindful of her rider and ready to work. And work she did. The second day of the ride, after getting a
little lost, we had to climb a steep incline. This wouldn’t have been such a problem except for the fallen leaves
and heavy rains over the previous days. It was too steep to climb straight up, and the footing was not good to
‘switchback’ our way out. We dismounted and, rather than try to crawl up, weaving through trees with a horse in
tow (I’m not a hiker). I simply secured my reins and let Lucy walk up on her own. She didn’t panic, fuss or barge;
she simply took to the task of hauling herself up to the top. And waited patiently for me to arrive.
I was pretty much sold on Lucy after the first day and more confident about my decision after the second day.
The third day was another success, with her nice, long, smooth lope (smooth is a critical quality for me). She
was a good size, age and temperament, and the price was right. I’d never seen any Curlies before, but I had
heard of them. I could sympathize with her ‘bad hair’. I am blessed (or cursed) with fine, dry, curly hair. So I
could identify with her mane – a mess of unmanageable curls. It was a good match. I didn’t know it would be a
great one.
We only got out for one more ride and then the rains came...and came...and came. We were busy getting
buildings and fencing erected to bring in our horses. Finally they arrived, Lucy and George, on November 3. The
weather gods blessed us with some decent riding temperatures and some of the water had dried up. So on
November 6, we excitedly mounted up for a ride on our property, along grassy paths and through wooded forest
trails. It was WONDERFUL! To be back in the saddle on our own horses – something we hadn’t done since
January. And we hadn’t known when it might happen again. It was such a good feeling; we didn’t want it to end.
Everything was special. So we decided to extend our ride and headed to the west side of our forested trail, one
we hadn’t walked in a while due to some heavily flooded sections.

The Wonder of the Curly Horse
Continued from previous page…
We came to a bog. There was an old rusted culvert, above ground, and I wanted to skirt it, as I didn’t want my
new horse injured. Around to the right we went, but I guess I should have sought out higher ground. Down went
poor Lucy, up to her belly in gooey, black mud! Because her back end was on more solid ground, my upper body
was balanced over her neck with no hope of repositioning my weight backward. I took the only possible option: I
bailed, into the soft, wet, black mud, under Lucy’s neck, in front of her submerged front legs. I was apprehensive,
but that little Curly lifted each foot and walked right over me without even a nudge. I’m not tall at 5' 4", and I tried
to be as small as I could, but Lucy is short bodied and only 14-1 HH.
I’ve seen horses exit mud. They often hurry through, bound or jump, without thought to what’s around them.
None of that from Lucy; she just got the job done, and then stood waiting for further instruction. I pulled myself
from the mud, thanked my good little horse, and then had to determine how we might get back, as the boggy
spot was between us and home. I secured her reins and walked my way back over the culvert, without Lucy.
Once on the other side, I turned and called her to me. She came, walking in my steps with careful determination
and no fear or tension. Thankfully she didn’t break through the culvert. I remounted and we continued,
uneventfully, home.
I cannot believe my good fortune in finding this little horse. We have been out on only one ride since the bog
incident – it is still raining here. We stuck to the road where there’s not so much chance of deep mud! We’re
hoping for snow that stays, and I’m sure that Lucy will be reliable in any situation that presents itself. And there is
another possible bonus: of our eight grandchildren, one has various allergies, including horses. We are
interested to see if Lucy could be an added bonus for him.
I am excited and confident about travelling the trails with this wonderful ‘Curly girly’ and learning what I can
about Curlies and Lucy!

The History of the Gaited Curly Horse
By Diane Mitchell (with thanks to those who answered her many questions!)
I was asked by our illustrious President to please write an article on the gaited Curly. I agreed, thinking this
would be an easy task. I bit off more than I could chew – way more! Why? I have looked in our history, and can’t
find any article dedicated to the gaited Curly. I have saved the many magazine articles written over the 18 years
I have been a member, and I could find only two that mentioned, briefly, the gaited Curly. One magazine
dedicated a paragraph of three sentences to the gaited Curly and that was the most I could find!
So, I have dug into the Registry’s past, back to the 1970s. There were so few Curlies that out-crossing was
allowed, and encouraged. At that time, there seemed to be many Missouri Fox Trotters that were showing curl.
They were in, if people didn’t destroy them. Many Curlies were coming from the mustang herds around Nevada.
A lot of these horses have Spanish ancestry. The Spanish are noted for having gaited horses, and there were
many mustangs that had a gait of some type. Other breeds that were known for gaiting that have been mixed in
with Curly horses are the Morgan and the Appaloosa. The Morgan wasn’t known originally as a gaited horse,
and still isn’t today, yet there are many that do gait, and the Morgan Horse Association is making room for them
and acknowledging them. The Appaloosa did an Indian Shuffle, which is also common among the Curly horse.
Some Mustangs do this Indian Shuffle, too. Once these horses were crossed with the Quarter Horse, and other
trotting breeds, they lost the gait or shuffle.
As I have described these breeds, I have also described types of gait. I am not going to go into a lot of detail, as
there are many books out there that have already done this. Suffice it to say that if someone says their Curly
gaits, you may want to ask, “Which gait do they do?” There is a foxtrot, which is expected, but not always
evident, in the Fox Trotter. Some will do a running walk – I myself owned a Fox Trotter that is curly, and she has
a running walk that any Tennessee Walker would die for! Some Curlies do the Indian Shuffle. This requires
some work out of the rider to get them into it, as it seems to be a balance between the walk and trot. If a rider
doesn’t ask them, they will just go straight from a walk to a trot, and totally miss the shuffle. There is also a
running walk, a stepping pace (which my stallion Copper Sun does), and a singlefoot, although some people like
to use the term ‘singlefoot’ to say they gait.
The earliest known gaited Curly to my knowledge is Benny Damele’s Copper D. He sired many horses, not all
having a gait or a shuffle, yet some did. The most popular mare that did was The Copper Mare. She did the
Indian Shuffle, and that was given to many of her get. Al Seigrist bought two mares from Benny Damele that had
Copper D as their sire. Those he bred to Fox Trotter Curlies. The resulting foals did the foxtrot. There was also
an Appaloosa stallion whose name is hard to spell or pronounce. One of his get was Four Mile Knick Knack. He
also did the Indian Shuffle and, when bred to Curly mares, passed the shuffle along. Among the Curly Fox
Trotter lines, there is a name that seems to stick out among the pedigree of most of the Curly Fox Trotters: that
is Curly Jim. The most popular from Curly Jim lines are Walker’s Prince T, Sir Patrick, Lovely Lady and Star’s
Lucky Touch.
The most difficult to follow are the Curly Mustang lines. Of course, they didn’t keep records! But their
background, having some Spanish blood, should help them into a gait, if not a shuffle. Recently, DNA genetic
history tests have been done on these mustangs. There is European blood in there, but also Spanish. My
stallion, BB Copper Sun, whose dam is The Copper Mare, had his DNA show mostly Morgan and Paso Fino.
The Paso Fino is Spanish and, as mentioned before, the Appaloosa that has mixed into any Mustang out there
has been known to shuffle. I have heard that the original Appaloosa was a gaited horse and, once they bred
them to other gaited breeds, the gait came back easily.
Breeders of gaited Curly horses may have a mix of the mustang, the Fox Trotter, and the Appaloosa in their
breeding stock. Maybe not all of the above, but the breeders have one thing in common: they breed for gait as
well as curls, working hard to keep the wonderful Curly personality and good conformation. A struggle at times,
but extremely rewarding when it all comes together!

Gaited Curly Horses … Myths and Facts
By Marv Woodke
Over the years, I have had many inquiries and interest in Curly horses. It's surprising to me that many are
skeptical of gaited horses; add to this the curls and some I think imagine them as some mystical equine.
Since the time we had a Tennessee Walker when I was a kid (very swayback), I learned to also look at a horse
without a saddle when buying. Gaited horses seem natural to me. So especially as I get older, I don't understand
why people like trotting horses.
There are two main gaits in Curlies from what I know: the western shuffle and the fox trot.
I have at least one mare that exhibits the western gait (Hammerickx Appaloosa) but haven't ridden her and don't
have much knowledge of it. The foxtrot is a smooth but powerful gait. My stallion, Drifter, exhibits this and is still
the best riding horse I have ever ridden. I have ridden on trails with all kinds of horses and done fine.
Some myths are:
• They don't canter.
• They can't be ridden on trails with other horses.
• Recessive fox trotters are genetically defective.
Facts:
• Fox trotters were developed as easy-riding cow horses.
• There were two main Curly fox trotter foundation bloodlines:
1. Walker's Prince T, going back to Curly Jim and Walker's Merry Lad
2. Sir Patrick, going back to Zane Grey, a champion fox trotter.
• They can canter … but why, when they have a smooth, fast gait.
• I saw a registered recessive fox trotter once with no defects but some bloodlines might.
• Breeding gaited with non-gaited produces mixed results.
I think gaited Curlies can continue improvement within the breed.
From my experience in breeding cattle and horses, more bloodlines with characteristics that you are breeding for
results in more offspring of the same characteristics, such as temperament and curls.

Will Her Majesty the Queen soon acquire a Curly horse?
By Marlene Tilson, Tall Trees Farm Curly Horses
This letter from the Royal Family came into our mailbox recently, in response to our letter sent to Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth about American Bashkir Curlies being hypo-allergenic. We were really pleased to be able to
inform the Royal household of this fact because the new princess, Kate Middleton, is highly allergic to horses. It
was a fun thing to mail Her Majesty a letter and also to get a reply back. Very exciting to know that the Queen and
the Duke of Cambridge now know what a "Curly" is...a horse of course! In their response, the Queen, and also
her grandson Prince William [Duke of Cambridge], thanked us for informing them about the American Bashkir
Curlies. So if someone does sell them a Curly, won’t that be wonderful?

Running for
Board of Trustees
POLICY FOR LATE ADS
Any adult member in good standing and
willing to attend the yearly conventions may
run for Board of Trustees. This is a threeyear term of office in which you will serve
on Registry committees and attend board
meetings. There will be one member at
large and three districts up for election
each year. Start thinking now about running
for the Board for the next term.

Advertisers whose ads arrive after the
deadline may choose to either wait until
the next issue to print their ads and
have them posted to the website OR
pay an additional $10 fee to have them
posted to the website shortly after we
receive them. Those ads will then be
printed in the next Curly Cues and
continue for another 90 days on the
website at no additional cost, as long as
there are no changes.
