The Church Basement Ladies–RISE UP, O MEN: Plymouth Playhouse
Since Summer is the season for Father’s Day, we felt it was a good time to include a section about men.
Especially since we always have a section devoted to women. I know some of the entries may appear to be

An Ode to Older Brothers
By Gail M. Weber
“What strange creatures brothers are.”
~ Mary Crawford in “Mansfield Park” by Jane Austen
Jane Austen had six brothers. So I guess she knew. For my
sister and me, one was plenty.
We learned a lot from our older brother. We grew up in the
50s and 60s. And the 70s. (Ok my sister was not around in
the 50s. I know she would want that clarified.) Anyway, since
we grew up way back then, our gender roles were pretty
defined. My sister and I did all of the housework and my
brother did sports. He could have mowed the lawn but my
dad had an electric lawnmower and thought it was dangerous.
As much as my brother was a big meanie, we didn’t actually
want him to die. Well my parents didn’t anyway.
And then there was the fact that he was the first grandchild
(on both sides), my parents’ only son, and the oldest. And my
mother loved him best. You’re probably starting to get the
picture here.
He did add some spice to our quiet Midwestern lives. Whether he
was showing us how to ride a horse bareback or make big fire with
matches and Aqua Net hairspray, there was never a dull moment.
And his impression of John Wayne never failed to impress us.
Sure, he was a skinny kid with a thick shock of black hair–but
when he put his thumbs in his belt loops and said “That’ll be the
day,” we really believed he was channeling The Duke.
He was also the spreader of false information. Information, that
my sister and I accepted as Gospel. At first. Like the time he
convinced our younger sister that she couldn’t whistle because she
wasn’t biting down hard enough on her finger and thumb. So she
kept biting. He kept encouraging her. Soon tears were streaming
down her little cheeks.
Usually, one learned the he was “fibbing” pdq. It took me one
quick taste to discover that the sap in milkweed IS NOT real
milk. But it wasn’t until I was in law school, (law school!) that I
learned that you don’t “die instantly” if a bee lands on your nose.
This I discovered while on a picnic, when my boyfriend gave me a
puzzled look and asked me why I was cupping my nose every time
I saw a bee.
My brother, let’s call him Brian, did have a fearlessness about him
that one had to admire. At the tender age of nine he was carrying
our baby sister down a flight of stairs when he lost his footing
and started to fall. But he held onto that baby and protected her
as he fell, letting his back take the punishment all the way down
www.tctosca.com
the stairs. I’m sure it was this same determination that made him
a State Wrestling Champion in high school. And a prosecuting
attorney as an adult. (Oh the irony!)
As adults we took a family trip to Europe, and since assuming the
role as the person in charge comes so naturally to him my brother
happily did all of the driving. And we happily let him. But he sure
got cranky, waiting in the rental car, when my sister and I were a
mere 45 minutes late. We had hair to style and make-up to apply.
“We have to make ourselves beautiful,” I explained. “That’ll be
the day” was his only reply.
So it came as no surprise when were strolling down a street in
Luxembourg, and my brother suddenly walked over to help a
couple of tourists who had a flat tire. Of all of the passersby, it was
only my brother who offered to help. In fact, he changed their tire
all by himself. Sort of a John Wayne thing to do, I guess.
I learned many things from my brother. How to make peanut
butter and pickle sandwiches. How to adjust the kitchen sprayer
so that the next person to turn on the faucet receives a surprise
shower. And how to apologize without losing face. (“Jeeze,
you’re ugly, Gail.” “Brian, apologize to your sister.” “I’m sorry
you’re ugly, Gail.”)
And I learned that brothers are different than sisters. I like to
think that having two younger sisters helped to mold him into the
man he is today. (He raised three lovely children, after all.) Maybe
he will come to believe that too. Yeah, that’ll be the day.

Stretching Ourselves For
A More Inclusive Perspective
by Guy Odishaw
One of my favorite quotes from a beloved teacher is, “...the
solution to every problem is more love...”
For me this has come to mean that growth in consciousness is
the fundamental solution to every problem. Often our reflex to
close, harden and polarize into an ‘us vs. them’ mindset in the
face of a ‘problem’ could be replaced with a reflex to open and
soften into a ‘we’ mindset. To expand our embrace, stretching
our self for the more inclusive perspective.

See page 78 for details
This is not to say there will be no us vs. them situation needing
our attention and direct action. But there is no doubt the action
taken after the ‘we’ has been located and entered
into will be very different than the action taken
from the closed, polarized perspective. I’m inspired
in this way by Einstein, “…the problem of one level
can only be solved by a solution from the next level.”
He too challenges us to reach beyond our present
understanding for a larger embrace.
Sample practice:
When a ‘problem’ arises notice your tendency to
solidify into the separate one. To ever so slightly
physically and psychologically contract–perhaps you feel
more defined. This can feel good, powerful, strong–we
tend to like it. Notice this. Then try to orient toward
what is outside this boundary of self, this contraction.
Can you expand to include more of it, all of it? If not,
why not? What are the barriers, the resistance? If so,
how does it feel, what is the effect on the separate and
separating one?

Opera & Shakespeare
Operas Based on
Shakespeare’s Works
More than 200 operas have been created from Shakespeare’s
plays. “Shakespeare lovers don’t necessarily love what musicians
and librettists do to his plays, and composers struggle under the
weight of a full pentameter line, heavy with imagery and some of
the most world-famous sentences ever written. And yet, there are
by now well over 200 operas based on the Bard of Avon because
the rich characters and wild stories are too great a temptation to
resist.” Michael Zwiebach, senior editor/ content manager for San
Francisco Classical Voice. sfcv.org
Giuseppe Verdi was a huge Shakespeare fan and had hoped to
compose an opera based upon King Lear. Unfortunately, that never
came to be. But Verdi did create Otello, Falstaff and Macbeth, all
based upon Shakespeare plays, and all considered to be some of his
greatest work.
Other, more contemporary musical works based on Shakespeare’s
plays include Kiss Me, Kate (1948, Cole Porter, based on The
Taming of the Shrew) and West Side Story (1957, Leonard Bernstein,
based on Romeo and Juliet).
Speaking of Romeo and Juliet, over 27 operas have been based on
this tragedy by William Shakespeare, including Bellini’s 1830
opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Berlioz’s 1838 dramatic symphony,
Romeo and Juliet, Tchaikovsky’s 1869 fantasy-overture for
orchestra, Romeo and Juliet and Gounod’s opera, Romeo et Juliette.
Gounod’s opera follows Shakespeare’s play more closely than
the others and is considered by Rupert Christiansen (The Faber
Pocket Guide to Opera) to be the most successful of all operatic
adaptations. Lucky for us, that is the one being presented by the
Minnesota Opera this September.

Adinkra symbols are found in West Africa and used in various
art forms, such as textiles (like mudcloth), sculpture and
pottery. The symbols have meanings that depend on color,
events (e.g. initiations or funerals), and on what they’re
placed. Adinkra symbols are used as metaphors for proverbs or

Spectacular! And Soon to Be Told
By Doris Rubenstein
If pedigrees are the kind of thing that make you open your eyes and pay attention to something
that might otherwise have passed you by, then take a gander at what and who is behind Mu
Performing Arts’ world-premiere production of “TOT: THE UNTOLD, YET SPECTACULAR STORY
OF (A FILIPINO) HULK HOGAN.” (See description on page 48.)
First of all, in 2015, playwright Victor Maog was named one of American Theatre Magazine’s
“20 Theatre Workers You Should Know.” Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director of the Public Theatre in
New York (we’re talking the “Joe Papp’s” Public Theater here!) called Maog “one of the leading
lights of his generation.”
And Randy Reyes, who plays the title character, is one of the most familiar younger talents on the
Twin Cities scene, participating in the important work of bringing diverse faces and voices to local
stages. Not only is he on the stage as Tot, but he directed the show and is Mu’s Artistic Director.
Not to mention that it’s playing at one of the oldest and most-respected venues in the Twin Cities:
Park Square Theatre. There’s a certain level of quality the community expects when they sit down
in that auditorium.
The icing on this theatrical cake is the fact that it owes its funding to one of the most prestigious
institutions in the world of art: the Jerome Foundation. If Jerome is putting its money on the line,
don’t you think you could dig into your entertainment budget to give this new work a try?

The Art of Business
The World As a Work of Art
by Pete Machalek, partner of SagePresence
Our natural tendency is to divide the world up into things that we
think of as art and things that we think of as not art. We relate to
the former differently than we do to the latter.
The way that you relate to art might be the thing to look at
when you try to define what art is. Conventional wisdom has a
schizophrenic approach to the question: Many of us simply think
that whatever is inside a museum is art, while everything else
isn’t. At the same time, it’s common for people to say, “That’s not
art” about something just because they don’t like it.
Both of these approaches reduce the value that we get from the
world around us.
What if we related to everything like it was a work of art? We
would bring appreciation and curiosity and exploration to the
50 | Exploring Culture
world around us. We would ask, “What does this say to me?
How do I feel about this?” Every work of humans would inspire
questions like, “What did they have in mind when they made this?”
The same would be true about all the people around us and
everything we perceive them doing. Our knee-jerk judgments
and reactions to things would all be buffered by a mindfulness,
a pursuit of value, a sense that these things have something that
could benefit us in some way.
This may be worth experimenting with. Like an artist.

Artist Kellie Rae Theiss with “Mallard Nest” (in progress).
“Barn Owl”
Kellie Rae Theiss
It was 2:30 AM when Kellie’s dog was fiercely barking at the
door. Her heart quickened as she thought it might be another visit
from that bear. She muzzled the dog with her hand to look and
listen. What was outside?
window. This living bird was calling to the painted owl inside, on
the artist’s easel. This amorous flirtation went on for a while. “I
remember it as a thrill and a very high compliment from the owl
that night.”
A loud sound came,”WHO-Whoo, WHO-WHOO!” There
Kellie saw a fat shadow on the ground that belonged to a great
horned owl. It weighed down the branch near her studio

was invited by the University of Minnesota for a solo exhibition of
her work at the Bell Museum of Natural History.

Featured Artist
Kellie’s work strikes a chord with our state. Minnesotans value
nature and they value fine art. Her work takes viewers outside
of the city for an up-close encounter with these creatures. You
can clearly see that some of the detail is made with a single hair
of a paintbrush. She creates portraits of her subjects that are
undoubtedly unique and soulful.
If you are interested in more information on the artist or to
purchase a painting or print, you are invited to visit her website
at: www.theissgallery.com. The artist would also like for it to be
noted that she does restoration work on vintage paintings.
Her contact number is 612.718.1223.
“Yellow Lily”
“I was deeply moved to receive this invitation and
acknowledgment by the Bell Museum! It felt like a milestone
achievement for many reasons. The first, being 27 years of
dedication to nature of Minnesota.”
The birds, fish, plants or nests she paints are often isolated, with
featureless backgrounds, which is Kellie’s signature style. Her
subjects are fascinating and powerful in the most unexpected
way. To view one of her bird nests up close brings on a threedimensional experience, no special glasses needed.
Kellie Rae is a master painter whose finely-tuned technical skills
serve to amplify the beauty and strangeness of her subjects. She is
also a poet and a teacher.
Her observations and love of nature began on her 19th century
family farm in northeast Nebraska. Kellie considers what she
learned from her grandparents and parents to be the beginning
of her formal education. She has attended the University of
Nebraska, University of Minnesota, Accademia Riaci in Florence,
Italy and more.
“Piliated Woodpecker”
Kellie collects books and does extensive research before
beginning any portrait, as she is certain that the better she
understands her subject, the stronger the painting will be. She
also feels that spending time being an observer in the woods and
the lakes of Minnesota for the past 27 years has been her greatest
learning experience. Brava!

At Home in the Office
By Julie Ann Segal
I was first contacted
by my client Marybeth
to help with her
living room. But that
changed at our first
appointment. While
she was showing me
around, we took a
look at her home
office, and started
Before
talking about how it
wasn’t working. When
I stepped in to take a look, I immediately noticed how heavy
and cramped it felt. Too many large pieces and clutter created a
feeling of overwhelm.
The office redesign took priority. I wanted to help her make this a
space where she could be productive, and feel good about being in.
The end result is an impressive transformation. “Prior to the
redesign, my office was a disorganized mess that really said nothing
about me. I tended to use it as a catch-all for things I didn’t know
what to do with,” tells Marybeth.
Now, she says it feels so much better working in there. “It’s wellorganized, bright and seems to flow in the way it’s laid out.”
To remove clutter and the “heavy” feeling, two large bookcases and
the couch were removed, and lots of time was spent decluttering.
The warm neutral color on the walls is soothing. A cozy rug and
upholstered chair create a relaxing reading area, and a large piece
of art creates a focal point. A piece I was delighted to help her find,
it makes Marybeth feel happy.
“I absolutely love my new office!
It says something about me and who I am.”
~ Marybeth
A new desk, relocated to the “command position” in the room
(a more powerful placement, according to Feng Shui) is also
less weighty, but allows for more workspace. We upgraded her
desk chair to a high-back leather one. In total, this setup was
intentional, for an enhanced feeling of being in control.
We also gave Marybeth plenty of places for storage. Now the things
she does use and need don’t have to be cluttering things up. On the
windows we replaced metal blinds with woven roman shades, also

with a natural look. They’re cordless, so nothing hangs in front of
the beautiful backyard view, and they feel much lighter.
In the end, we accomplished our goal of creating a space for
Marybeth that is conducive to work and also enjoyable. She says,
“My work attitude and feeling of what the office is has definitely
changed—I like to be there even when I’m not working. It doesn’t
feel only like an office but is actually a relaxing place to be.”
