Where Are We Heading? The theme of our 2010-11 Board is “Around the Bend in 2010”. I did not know there was going to be a train wreck around the bend. Our Board did an outstanding job in 2010 and continues to do so this year. We have had to deal with a lot of issues that pertain to our business. We continue to deal with the Medicare issue from the federal and state levels, and once again the SEC has raised its ugly head. It appears the SEC’s mission is to take over the insurance industry, and the companies we represent are standing by and letting them get away with it. The SEC has recently passed a rule if you are security licensed, your PAC contribution cannot go to NAIFA-Texas but must go to National. In other words, Texas gets none of your contribution. This is another battle for us to fight. We are voting for a new board and officers to carry on the fight – see pages 8-9 and VOTE and send your ballot to NAIFA-Dallas office by Friday, April 22nd. 2010-2011 has a good Board, and the candidates are also extraordinary. Let’s get behind them and carry on the tradition of Dallas being a leader in our business and one of the premier associations in the NAIFA Federation. We can determine where we are heading if we stick together. Regards, John M. Connally John M. True Fresh Eyes My husband and I and our friends, Jack and Karen, recently spent the better part of two weeks with two British couples who were visiting in the U.S. Although they had been to the states on two previous occasions, this trip afforded them the opportunity to experience Colorado for the first time. My family and I have spent quite a lot of time in New Mexico and southern Colorado, certainly not so much time that we are immune to the unique beauty of those states, but perhaps enough that familiarity clouds our view. What an experience to see those surroundings through “fresh eyes”. The travelers were thrilled by the landscapes – the dramatic rocky spires and mesas of New Mexico and the clear blue skies, purple mountain majesty, and golden aspens of Colorado. What fun to see one of our favorite places through the fresh eyes of our friends from across the pond. We were delighted by their child-like enthusiasm for everything American, as well as by their perspective on our country – its politics, terrain, traditions, history, food, and language – which provided the subject matter for lots of laughter and conversation. Seeing things with fresh eyes can cause one to not only appreciate the things that we may take for granted, but also to analyze more carefully the things that we may have come to overlook or ignore. What aspects of your life could be improved by a viewing with fresh eyes? Could you benefit from stepping back from yourself and seeing your life, surroundings, relationships, or business from a fresh perspective? I recently visited with a woman who, in her late 40s, literally reinvented herself. She said that she had fallen into the habit of avoiding the scale, had grown accustomed to wearing her comfortable but slouchy old clothes, and had spent little time in front of the mirror. One day, as she was walking down a street, she caught a glimpse of her reflection in a store window. She did a double-take and was stunned by what she saw. Who was that frumpy, lethargic woman? Seeing herself from a fresh perspective – with fresh eyes – changed her life. She resolved to make some positive changes and went from being dowdy, unkempt, and matronly to being well-groomed stylish, and energized. A business owner found himself in the habit of doing what he'd always done, the way he’d always done it. Taking a look at his business with fresh eyes caused him to see the potential growth that he was missing and to make some positive changes that made a bottom-line difference. Try this experiment. Walk into your office or workspace and look around as if you are seeing it for the first time. What do your surroundings say about the person who works there? Try the same thing at home. Look at your living space as if you are a visitor. If you observe some things that you’d like to improve, do so; on the other hand, you may want to look at your home with gratitude and appreciation. Unlike many of the victims of recent hurricanes and floods, you are blessed just with a roof over your head. What about your work habits? Take an objective look at your performance, and then answer honestly, “Are you working to your full potential? Would you hire you?” Take a look at the people in your life. Out of habit, do you spend time with people you don’t enjoy? Are you allowing yourself to be drawn into their negativity? Are there some relationships that you need to analyze? On the other hand, maybe there are some people that you’re seeing with overly critical eyes, people who deserve a fresh look. Try seeing them with fresh eyes, eyes of compassion, understanding, and appreciation. Use the approach of a traveler from another country. See your world with fresh eyes. Doing so can help you to improve in some areas of your life and to appreciate others. – Julie Alexander, Great Days julie@juliealexander.com Thought for the Month: “We would worry less about what others think of us if we realized how seldom they do.” – Ethel Barrett THE FINANCIAL ADVISOR NEWS OF NAIFA-DALLAS 4/11 THANKS TO OUR 2010-11 SPONSORS & EXHIBITORS: Ackley Financial Group associated with IDT RISK MANAGEMENT GROUP Joe Radovic, CLU, ChFC, CFP • 469-737-4052 jradovic@htk.com Neil F.
