2014 KING’S CUP ELEPHANT POLO TOURNAMENT BOOKLET 27th August 2014 - 31st August 2014 Where inspired journeys begin… Dear Friends of the King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament, Welcome to Elephant Polo Week in Thailand, and to those of you returning from previous seasons welcome back! Due to the popularity of the tournament, this year’s event is relocating from the royal seaside town of Hua Hin to Bangkok, hosted by Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort & Spa. From Thailand’s stunning beach, city and jungle havens, to Vietnam’s vibrant coast or China’s rich heritage. Escape to a Maldivian paradise, Bali beaches or Arabian desert, island and urban retreats. The community of Bangkok is excited to host 16 international teams for one of Thailand’s most prized annual sporting events, held at the VR Sports Club, which has thoughtfully been transformed into your elephant polo stadium for the week. Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort & Spa feels especially proud to host the 2014 King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament for the very first time in Bangkok. We are now celebrating more than a decade of successful tournaments, and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever. We look forward to bringing you five days of unforgettable action both on and off the pitch, from an impressive opening parade and nail biting matches, children’s and ladies days, fun elephant related activities, to extravagant themed dinners and memorable nights, culminating in an unmissable experience that is richly integrated into local culture. A very special thanks to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, all of our corporate sponsors, especially Audemars Piguet, and members of the Bangkok community where we live and thrive, for allowing this special event to take place in the iconic location of Thailand’s capital. Finally, a special thanks to all of you for taking the time to join us for this year’s King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament, and to the team at Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort & Spa. The elephants receive no specific training to play polo. In addition, only young elephants who like to run around and enjoy themselves participate in the tournament, and consequently tend to easily pick up the game (some better than others!). Each elephant only plays two games a day - we don’t want our elephants to get tired so they only play for 28 minutes each day compared with working 10 hours a night on the streets or 5 hours a day in a trekking camp. Young elephants enjoy running around and playing games - and at the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation we have an area for the young elephants to play, which they’ll do for hours at a time, participating in possession games with tyres and such. WELCOME TO THE 2014 KING’S CUP ELEPHANT POLO Elephant Polo Tournament held at the VR Sports Club in honour of His Majesty the King. Spectator Regulations • No flags or banners are permitted on the grounds without the permission of the organisers. • No whistles or horns are allowed at any time, as they may scare the elephants. • Smoking is not permitted in the restaurant or public areas. • For your own safety, please do not approach the elephants. • No gambling or betting of any sort is permitted on the premises. • Please do not litter; use the conveniently located garbage cans. • Elephants must always be given right of way and at no time shall unauthorised personnel enter the elephant area. • Selling goods or services is not permitted without prior approval of the event organisers. • Please use the public facilities which have been made available on the grounds. • Do not leave children unattended at any time. • Spectators under the age of 18 must be under adult supervision and are not permitted to consume tobacco or alcohol. • Adults are requested to consume alcohol responsibly. • For your safety, please refrain from crossing over or sitting on the field fence and maintain a safe distance from the pitch. An elephant that does not enjoy elephant polo is immediately retired and still gets to keep their bonuses, as this is usually the only time of the year they receive regular veterinary check-ups, vitamin supplements and a chance to rest in natural surroundings. • Do not feed, touch or throw things at the elephants. • No firearms or fireworks of any kind are permitted on the grounds. • The tournament welcomes the public from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm; guests are not permitted on the grounds at any other time. One reason we have chosen the VR Sports Club is because the surrounding natural forest is a great place for elephants. Our main concern is to take these elephants off the busy streets and tourist areas and let them be elephants for at least two weeks a year. • Please note that by attending the tournament, guests may have their picture published in media outlets or on internet news sites. • Complimentary parking is available at guests’ own risk in designated areas. • Please respect and abide by the rules of the VR Sports Club. The event organisers reserve the right to refuse entry or request guests to leave the grounds at any given time. High energy food is essential for all ‘ele-athletes’ and each elephant participating in the tournament is fed 20 stems of bananas, 50 sticks of sugarcane and 10 pineapple plants per day, in addition to being provided with veterinary and vitamin supplements. The tournament’s largest expense is maintaining and pampering the elephants – this is on top of the money raised at the Gala Dinner which is used for more strategic projects that benefit all of Thailand’s elephants. Each elephant receives a veterinary check before she’s declared fit to play – those that fail don’t get sent home, they just get prescribed rest; something often not possible throughout the rest of the year. Manohra Cruises Step aboard a beautifully restored antique rice barge and cruise in old world elegance along the River of Kings. Pass famous royal sites, exquisite temples and striking modern landmarks as you dine on fine Thai cuisine. In Thailand, the King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament was first launched in Hua Hin by Anantara in 2001. In 2006 the tournament moved to the Golden Triangle and was hosted by Anantara Golden Triangle Resort & Spa (which has since been renamed Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort). In 2011 the tournament returned to its original venue at Hua Hin for the following three years, and in 2014 is being proudly hosted in Bangkok by Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort & Spa. Elephant Bar - The Elephant Polo Players’ Lounge Open daily from 4:00 pm till late, our colonial, Asian inspired lounge bar is the ideal venue for quick bites, pre-dinner cocktails and relaxing evening nightcaps, to catch up with friends, see daily photos of the tournament on screen, listen to music and strategise. Elephants are a key symbol of Thailand’s history. Nothing but the utmost respect is given to these pachyderms, with all proceeds of the tournament used to ensure their welfare, sustenance, employment, mahout training and the provision of medical treatment. Thai Elephant Polo Association • Due to the size of these great mammals, each team comprises three players and their four legged accomplices. Matches take place on a marked pitch of 80 metres by 48 metres, using a standard size polo ball. • The game is divided into two 7 minute “chukkas”, or halves, of playing time with an interval of 15 minutes. The whistle blown by the referee stops and starts the play. Both the elephants and playing pitch ends are changed after the first chukka. • The pitch is marked with lines; a circle with a radius of 10 metres marks the middles of the field, while a semi-circle arch in front of the goals has a radius of 20 metres, measured from the centre of the goal line at either end of the pitch and referred to as the D. • The scoring system awards two points to a winning team and one point apiece to teams which draw. HOW TO PLAY Game Technicalities • No elephants may lie down in front of the goal mouth. To do so constitutes a foul and a free hit is awarded to the opposing side from the semi-circle in front of the goal. • An elephant may not pick up the ball in its trunk during play. To do so constitutes a foul and a free hit is awarded to the opposing team from the spot where the ball was picked up. The defending players must be 15 metres from the spot. • Teams are made up from the pool of elephants and balanced out as fairly as possible, bearing in mind the size and speed of the elephants. Once the pool of elephants has been selected, each elephant is categorised and marked as A, B, C, D, E and F. • Sugar cane or rice balls packed with vitamins (molasses and rock salt) are given to the elephants at the end of each match, and a cold beer or soft drink to the elephants’ drivers, and not vice versa! The health and welfare of the elephants used in the T.E.P.A. tournaments is of prime concern. Abuse of an elephant is considered to be the most serious offence. TEAMS & PLAYERS 2014 Team A Team B Fun Facts • Elephants in this tournament only respond to Thai commands from their mahouts. • The first elephant polo games were played with a soccer ball. These were quickly changed to standard polo balls after it was realised the elephants like to stamp and pop the soccer balls. • Some players train by sitting on top of a slow moving jeep and swinging at the ball using an elephant polo stick! ANANTARA BANGKOK BANK TEAM TEAM Mr. Cameron Humphries Mr. Manish Jha Mr. Lars Kerfin Ms. Ploy Psenqsian Mr. Cameron Humphries Since being the same height as his toy action-man Maj Cam Humphries wanted to join the Army. Despite over 20 years service in The Highlanders - the finest Infantry Regiment in the British Army - and having completed numerous operational tours he is still most reknowned for not to being that mad British Officer who practised on his bicycle. Mr. Manish Jha In Manish’s dictionary there’s certainly no such thing as number two. As the General Manager of AVANI Seychelles, he ensures that the property is top notch, in the same way as he is determined to be the best at the King’s Cup. Mr. Lars Kerfin Lars is General Manager of Anantara Lawana and goes to the gym every other day to keep his body in shape. With his towering height and the polo skills he has accumulated over the years, he makes a strong opponent to be wary of. He has not played polo for 6 years but has been pulled out of retirement to join the much fancied Bangkok Bank team. He is a busy property developer in London. To start a conversation with him on this subject, you should start with, ‘South of the river? You’ve got to be joking!’ CITIBANK CASILLERO DEL DIABLO TEAM TEAM Mr. Darren Buckley As Citi’s Head of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, Darren pushed for the global bank to sponsor this ancient sport for the third year in a row, and fell in love with these majestic creatures while playing for Citi’s team. Debuting in elephant polo this year, he is determined to bring a large dose of Chilean energy to the tournament. Mr. Prab Thakral Mr. Michael Haesselein Mr. Rickard Hogberg Mr. Michael Haesselein Mr. Tim Beaumont Tim is CEO of The Beaumont Partnership - an architectural, interior design and landscape firm based in Bangkok. Tim’s extensive experience offers clients a level of intelligence highly sought after in today’s competitive commercial environment. JOHNNIE WALKER BLUE LABEL TEAM KING POWER DUTY FREE TEAM Mr. Christopher Stafford Mr. Bjorn Richardson Ms. Robin Lourvanij Mr. Fernando Rodriguez Mr. Christopher Stafford Famous for bringing elephant polo to Thailand as the former VP & GM of Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa, Chris has spent time practicing his skills around the world. Chris has played in every King’s Cup tournament. Now as Vice President of Operations at Silver Needle Hospitality he still carries a handicap only eclipsed by his bar tab. Mr. Bjorn Richardson Vice President and Co-Founder of TEPA (Thailand Elephant Polo Association), Bjorn captained the Thai team to a silver medal in the 2003 WEPA championships. In the 2008 WEPA event he swears he witnessed the goal of the century (though no one else can recall the morning). Bjorn, who works for Oakwood, is also an avid golfer, which allegedly causes serious problems with his polo swing! Ms. Robin Lourvanij Robin is an interior designer and established Kuppa Tea & Coffee Traders Co. Ltd., Bangkok’s popular restaurant in 1998. A co-owner of Polo Escape, as well as the Vice President of the Thailand Polo Association. Robin has participated in many international tournaments. Ensure you make it over to the Kuppa tent and try her to die for steak sandwiches! Mr. Fernando Rodriguez Mr. Tom Claytor Mr. Nattapong Pratumlee Mr. Tom Claytor Tom is a member of the infamous Black Dog Polo Team and has often been compared to Murli Murlitaran, not only for his playing genius but also for having perfected the controversial “Claytor Move” on the back of an elephant. Tom is a bush pilot who has flown extensively in Africa. He started playing polo at age 23 when he was in Kenya, and he has been on 3 championship King’s Cup elephant polo teams. Mr. Nattapong Pratumlee Khun Nat is Thailand’s highest handicapped horse polo player, but he is also no stranger to the elephant polo circuit. The very mention of this name strikes fear in the hearts of most veteran elephant polo players, not only for his prowess in handling a mallet, but also for his impeccable Mahout language skills. Khun Nat studied under polo instructor Reggie Ludwig in USA for two years, and is a member of the Thai National Team. Mr. Satid Wongkraso Mr. Satid Wongkraso Khun Bung hails from Muktahan along the outer reaches of the mighty Mekhong river on Thailand’s Eastern border. Bung is the strong and silent type and has been rising through the ranks of Mahout polo players. He recorded a solid victory on horseback in the 2013 Ambassador Cup, and he is looking forward to his first foray on the back of an elephant. LOUIS ROEDERER HONG KONG MEKHONG TEAM TEAM Mr. Matt Mason Matt has been riding horses since the age of eight. This will be Matt’s first King’s Cup Tournament, his competitive nature, polo skills and towering height will make him a fierce competitor. When not being a man of leisure, Matt is a Partner of TT International and has referred to as “a horse whisperer for business thinkers.” Mr. Rob Derry Rob’s key achievement in Elephant Polo has been pulling together a team for the 2014 King’s Cup Tournament. An incredible collection of human being’s which between them boast absolutely zero experience in Elephant Polo. The team have so far demonstrated some core skills in prioritization. They have designed a logo, a blazer, have a Champagne sponsor and have recruited some of Hong Kong’s finest to support. Let’s hope the team’s pre-event work pays off and victory is already secured. Mr. Michael Davies Riding elephants comes naturally to Michael. In between a career as a professional ‘free runner’, Michael finds the time to rear baby Elephants on the grounds of his award winning hotel in Sri Lanka. The grand-son of an Indian tea planter and the son of a cross dressing property mogul, becoming a World Champion E-Polo player seems like the logical conclusion to his thirties. Mr. Mal Williamson Mal is an athlete, a world class paddle boarder, an outstanding tourist and has a Gold Coast tan that will drive the lady opposition players to distraction. These factors combined led the Hong Kong selection committee to believe that Mal was born to play Elephant Polo. It is thought that Mal will be defending in the earlier games in the day then in full attack mode in the afternoon once the Domaines Ott Rosé has started flowing through his veins. Mr. Ed Freeman With no prior Elephant Polo (or indeed Polo) form, Ed’s selection for the Hong Kong team may have come as a surprise to some. However, Captain Rob has confirmed that Ed’s selection was a carefully thought out strategic master stroke, and the fact that both Captain and player agreed on the selection after a (very) long lunch (funded by Ed) had no bearing whatsoever on the decision. Despite being unlikely to offer any actual Polo talent, Ed is expected to be invaluable (both on and off the field) as the team’s resident lawyer. Ms. Cindy Burbridge Mr. Byron Bishop Mr. David Partridge Mr. Franck Constant Mr. Matt Mason Mr. Mark Pearson Mr. Rob Derry Ms. Cindy Burbridge Bishop Cindy is arguably Thailand’s most recognisable supermodel. In 1996, she represented Thailand in Miss World Pageant. After the pageant, she entered the entertainment business, becoming a model for brands such as Chanel, Celine, Lux, Lavenus, Gucci, Fendi, Mazda, Omega Watches and Nescafe. She also worked as a VJ for Channel V International and has launched her own swimwear brand Jantzen. Mr. Byron Bishop An American-Japanese native, Byron married Cindy in 2005. With now 2 beautiful kids Byron certainly is the proud husband and father of one of the most envied celebrity families. Mr. Michael Davies Mr. Mal Williamson Mr. Franck Constant An avid sailor and water sportsman from France, Franck spent a few leisurely weekends at “Polo Escape” in Pattaya and threw in a few horse polo lessons. He has been since working on a new elephant-polo contraption, which is currently under intensive testing and could be ready for this year elephant polo. When not up to some prank, Franck runs a solar power company with branches in Asia, Europe and US. Mr. David Partridge This is David’s first year as a player after visiting last year and falling in love with the Thai people and the sport. He played equestrian polo at Texas A&M University and later in Colombia and Argentina. He is a commercial pilot who has lived most of his adult life as an expat in places like; Colombia, Djibouti, Kenya, Panama and Saipan. Dave would like to think that you will see him and his teammates on the winners podium hoisting the trophy. Mr. Mark Pearson Mr. Ed Freeman MERCEDES-BENZ THAILAND PRICEWATERHOUSE COOPERS TEAM TEAM Ms. Lucy Monro Mr. Paul Stitt Founder and still sole member of the Nonthaburi lefthanded players club, Paul has previously played for the PricewaterhouseCoopers WEPA Legends. A bon vivant and snappy dresser, Paul is reputed to be the only person to have climbed Doi Inthanon (Thailand’s highest mountain), while wearing tweed. Mr. Paul Stitt Mr. Charles Reichelmann Charles Riechelmann is a Tongan born New Zealand rugby union player. He played for Auckland, the Blues and the All Blacks at international level. Ms. Carolyn Syangbo Ms. Chitra Hepburn Mrs. Stine Heiselberg Ms. Lucy Monro A familiar face at polo tournaments around the world, as the Publisher and Editor in Chief of Equestrio Arabia and Equestrio China, Lucy, when not playing polo on elephants or reporting on others doing the same, can be found in Dubai at her day job bringing the best of the polo and equestrian world to Equestrio readers. Ms. Carolyn Syangbo The lady behind the success of WEPA polo is making her appearance once again at the King’s Cup. Carolyn is a gem who sparkles as one of the top three female elephant polo players in the world. She has been at the heart of organising WEPA, and many of the innovations present today are due to her diligence and foresight as to what players and spouses may ask for next. Ms. Chitra Hepburn Chitra Hepburn made her ele-polo debut for the Audemars Piguet team at the 2009 King’s Cup and has discovered a new passion for this noble sport. Chitra’s off pitch career as an investment banker has given her some experience in competing in a male dominated arena, not unlike ele-polo, but she feels nothing beats the thrill of a well fought chukka. Mrs. Stine Heiselberg Mr. Olo Brown Olo was born in Apia, Samoa and is a former rugby player who played prop position for the Auckland Provincial team, the Super Rugby Blues team and the New Zealand All Blacks. Todd has been in an exhaustive elephant boot camp overseen by “Killer Katie” and is ready to go. When Todd is not flying around the world, he is a successful marketer of media advertising on Madison Avenue.
