The Rotary also donated $50 worth of books to each classroom! Dr. Tony Collins reading to Mrs. Brown's First Grade Registration Correction Your registration packet for next year included a physical exam packet. The letter states that a physical examination is required for students entering 5th grade. This is incorrect and the correct grades that are required to have a physical examination include incoming students in kindergarten, 6th grade and all new students entering from an out state school. If you have any questions, please call Sandy Magdalener at 847-367-4120, ext 2011. K - 4 Gone Wild With Good Character! K 1 - Gwen Edgar Lily Van Dixhorn 2 - Ryan Garcia 3 - Bryce Pinsel 4 - No Nominee Each week many K-4 students receive a "Gone Wild With Character" nomination. These are displayed on the wall across from the Pat Patt gym. The following students names were randomly picked this week to say the Character Counts pledge on Monday morning. Congratulations to all the students who were nominated this past week! National Writing Consultant On Friday, Oak Grove School hosted Kristina Smekens, a well respected consultant in "6 Traits Writing". In the morning, Ms. Smekens taught mini lessons at seven different grade levels to demonstrate the teaching of writing. While she taught our students, teachers and administrators observed from the back of the room. After the students went home on Friday afternoon, Ms. Smekens taught all of the teachers about the "6 Traits of Writing". She will return on August 18 for a full day training with the staff to launch the school year with writing. Our teachers written evaluations indicate that this was a very valuable training experience. Parents will be learning more about the “6 Traits” as we implement them throughout the school next year. If you would like to learn more: www.smekenseducation.com Board of Education News MASTER FACILITY PLAN The Board is engaging a architect firm to design a Master Facility Plan for the school. The plan should be complete within 6 months. At the May Board meeting, the Board voted to suspend plans for the cafeterias and other renovations until after the facilities plan is completed. ADMINISTRATIVE RESTRUCTURING PLAN The Board voted to support the administrator restructuring plan. Although we could continue to be successful with our current structure, the administration has created an enhanced design for the school. Even though we will remain one Oak Grove School tied together by our Strategic Plan, our Curriculum Coordinating Council, Board of Education and Administrative Council, the school will be divided into three units to serve as schools within a school. Julie Waehner will be principal of the K-2. Dave Karolewicz will be principal of the 3-5 and Mark Clement principal of the 6-8. Teachers are all assigned to one of the three "schools". Each school will make recommendations on curriculum and instructional practices for the children they work with to the CCC. The schools will have a "whole child" perspective since they will work within their school to design plans for children with special education, learning support or gifted needs. Ms. Waehner will remain the District Special Education Coordinator and Mr. Clement the District Gifted Coordinator but the principals will lead the work with the children in their own schools in this areas. We are excited to begin this new plan in the Fall and feel it will serve the parents, staff and children. “Spotlight on the Grammy’s” 8th grade dance "Spotlight on The Grammys " 8th Grade Graduation Dance was a huge success! The kids had a blast which was only made possible by the many volunteers who helped create, organize, build, paint, cut, install, bake, order food , invitations, entertainment and favors.....it would not have happened with out all of you ! Special thanks to Anja Valente and Rhoni Ross-Bast for chairing the event, Dee Panico & Amy Loumeau and their team who co-chaired the food, Paula McGuire and Denise Gaulin who co-chaired entertainment, Suzanne Baumruk who created the beautiful invitations, Helen Ryan and her team who made the favors, Steve and Julie Bakus who made the "Rolls Royce" limo for the entrance, Cyndi Harvey & Leigh Foltz for co-chairing decorations and their many elves who worked day and night on creating such a cool vision, Maria Luce for MCing the red carpet, and Mr. Clement for his special dance rendition of YMCA!!!! 5 months of blood sweat and tears! It was all worth it once we saw the kids arrive and enjoy the evening! “Spotlight on the Grammy’s” 8th grade dance Dear Parents, We, as Technology Teachers, are recommending that students practice their typing skills over the summer. The school district has purchased a web-based version of the program Type to Learn 4 that is available to your child from home. This is the same application that the students have been using at school. A goal of 20 minutes once a week would be appropriate for most children. If you are interested, go to http://ttl4.sunburst.com/downloads/ to get the application as well as the Client Upgrade. You must download both in order for the program to work. It works on both PCs and MACs. If you need help, you can download the Quick-Start guide. This has step-by-step directions for you. Your child’s username is the same as their login name (year graduating and last name, ex: “16mccarty” with NO spaces). Everyone has the same password of “123.” The first time you use the program, you will need the account code of “100522.” As a reminder, students should be using the correct finger positioning whenever they are typing. Typing can be practiced in many forms: writing an email to a family member, writing a summer journal entry, or writing a story. Any practice will help improve typing skills. Enjoy the summer!
