Eastview Extra Middle School Football Transitions to Athletic
Eastview Athletic Association Publication Eastview Extra May 2010 Volume 5, Issue 2 Middle School Football Transitions to Athletic Associations If you’ve followed the business of the District 196 school board, you may be aware that several middle school sports have been slated for administration by area athletic associations including Eastview Athletic Association, Eagan Athletic Association, Valley Athletic Association, and Rosemount Area Athletic Association. The first of these sports will be football, which will transition out of the middle schools beginning in the fall of 2010. Football is just the first step in alleviating some of the district’s financial burden of the middle school sports programs. In discussing the best way to move forward with implementing this change, many opinions were considered as well as many models of what the program should look like to best serve the District 196 community. With the tremendous amount of work that has gone on in previous years with regard to the EVAA Football program, EVAA representatives determined the existing framework could be easily modified to address concerns by the district and the associations. It is on that framework that the intra-district football program, Eastview, Rosemount, Apple Valley, Eagan—Youth Football League, ERAVE-YFL, will be built. For those of you who already have children in the EVAA football program, there should be very little change with the exception of decreased travel distances to most of the competitions. If you have had a child go through the middle school football program, we welcome you to the new program replacing the current program run by District 196. Many hours have been spent and will continue to be spent to assure a quality program and smooth transition for all children in the new league. Tom Muehlbauer, ERAVE Commissioner, and Chris Anderson, EVAA Football Program Director, will continue in expanded responsibilities within the EVAA Football program as well as the new ERAVEYFL. Look for information about this exciting new opportunity and plan on attending the meeting on May 2nd, 2010, 6pm in the EVHS auditorium. Additionally, please visit the EVAA website, http://evaasports.org/Football/ Traveling/index.php, for the most current communications regarding the new programs details and important dates. This transition and the planning for it would not have been easily accomplished without the contributions of the EVAA Football administration, District 196 representatives and administrators, Kelly Sherwin, EVHS Head Football Cross Country— Coach, and the other head coaches in the Program Director district. Welcome to New EVAA Members Do you know what the initials EVAA represent? Have you heard of EVAA? If you live within the Eastview High School borders and have kids interested in sports, the Eastview Athletic Association (EVAA) would like to welcome you to our organization. We have a very simple mission: to promote, provide, and operate various sports programs at different levels of competitive skills for the youth (boys and girls) of our community. EVAA is a self-supporting athletic association that offers baseball, basketball, cross country, football, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track, volleyball, and wrestling to community children. Annually, over 1,500 local children participate in the eleven offered sports. It does not compete with school activities, but will be absorbing athletes from three middle school sports no longer available through District 196 (Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan). The organization has one Board that oversees all of the separate programs. Each program has a separate board that directs the day to day processes for that sport. The role of the main Board is to set the guidelines for each program. This main Board currently has twelve members that meet monthly during the school year to discuss program budgets, hear feedback from participants, select vendors, and set policies. One example of a current policy update is regarding background checks. EVAA always had background checks for coaches, but recently updated its policy to have annual national background checks on all coaches, program directors, and board members. If you would like to find out more about EVAA, please see our website at http://www.eastviewevaa.org or join us on the third Monday of each month at 7pm at the Apple Valley Community Center. Needed The Cross Country running program is in need of a volunteer to help lead and coordinate this fall sport. At this point, without a program director, EVAA will be unable to continue offering this program in the fall. Please consider taking on this much needed role! Please visit the website at www.evaasports.org and go to ―Contact Us‖ to volunteer. The 2010 football board intends to build on the success of the 2009 season where there was nearly 400 participants on 23 teams in grades 3 through 8. The football season will run from early August until mid October for in-house and from early August until late October for traveling football. There are exciting changes to the traveling football program. Due to budget constraints, District 196 has decided to drop all middle school football starting with the 2010-2011 school year. EVAA Football is very excited to welcome any 7th or 8th grade football player that will attend Eastview High School to our program! We will participate in the newly developed ERAVE-YFL (Eastview Rosemount, Apple Valley, Eagan – Youth Football League). There is an EVAA Football information meeting on May 2nd at 6:00 pm in the Eastview High School Auditorium. Anyone interested in EVAA Football is encouraged to attend this important meeting! The in-house football program is open to 3rd—6th graders (fall of 2010). The traveling football Program is open to 7th—8th graders (fall of 2010). On-line registration will run from May 1st through July 31. The registration fee is $125.00 for in-house and $150.00 for traveling. A late registration period will run from August 1 until August 4 with a fee of $150.00 for in-house and $175.00 for traveling. Any registration request received after August 4 will be placed on a waiting list and we will only be accommodated as space allows on a first come, first served basis. Please see the EVAA Football website, www.evaasports.org click on football or contact EVAA Football Program Director, Chris Anderson 612-280-8722, for more information on the 2010 EVAA Football season. We are looking forward to seeing you all in August for a fun and exciting 2010 EVAA Football season! It is also an opportunity to get a head start on Winter JO volleyball. This year we would like to field one team at the 5th-6th grade level and one team at the 7th8th grade level. We are also working to have the coaches for our winter JO season coach these teams. Tryouts will be held in late August and the season will run from early September to late October. Teams will compete in the competition league at the Midwest Volleyball Warehouse on Saturday morning/afternoon and practice twice a week. The registration and full program fee for this program has not yet been determined but will be between $150 and $200. Please check the EVAA website in June for final details. This program is an opportunity for girls and boys in 3rd -6th grade to play recreational volleyball. The focus of this program is having fun along with some skill development. There is no tryout process and players of all skill levels and abilities are welcome. The season begins in early September and ends in late October with a tournament. The cost of this program is $60 and includes a team t-shirt and socks. We have had very low turnout for our 5th-6th grade group the last few in-house seasons. The future of this age group as an in-house activity is in jeopardy. This will be the last season that we offer a 5th-6th grade age group if enrollment numbers don't improve, so tell all your friends and sign up to play Eastview in-house volleyball. Winter JO Volleyball This program is an opportunity for girls in 5th-10th grade to play competitive volleyball. Teams for U12, U14 and U16 age groups are offered. These teams practice twice a week and compete in the Midwest Volleyball Warehouse Power league as well as independent tournaments. All players also have access to positional clinics for setters, hitters and defensive specialists. All 9th and 10th graders that attend EVHS also have access to the strength and conditioning pro- gram put on by the EVHS volleyball coaches. All teams are coached by paid coaches that receive direction from our volleyball board as well as the EVHS Volleyball Coaching staff. Tryouts will be held in November and the season will run from late November to early April. Registration for the program is $150. The full program fee is $575 for U12 and $700 for U14 and U16. Basketball With the beautiful weather outside, it seems odd to be discussing winter basketball for 2010 -2011 season, however, try-outs are less than 5 months away and summer is a great time to hone dribbling and shooting skills. This past winter season marked the first year of 4th grade boys and girls traveling basketball with much success. Great job by coaches Paul Gilles (girls) and Ken Boehm (boys) for this inaugural season of 4th grade basketball . This past year also marked an almost perfect season by our 7A girls team and head coach Melissa Guebert with a record 48-1 with their lone loss being by 1 point at the State Tournament. Super Season!! (See the story on page 6 of this newsletter.)We are confident the 20102011 basketball season will also be a memorable year for our children of EVAA Basketball. mately 2-3 practices per week, including Wednesdays and weekends at Dist 196 schools, Eagan Community Center, Apple Valley Community Center, Rosemount Community Center, Apple Valley Community Center and other possible sites including Bloomington, Eagan or south metro gyms where available. After months of preparation, the K - 6 grade track program is off to the races! With over 130 kids registered, enrollment is about 75% over the previous high enrollment. While this has presented several logistical issues, the great team of coordinators, over 20 dedicated coaches, and many supportive parents, have made the season operate smoothly. Meets for the K-2nd grade teams (currently six teams of 16 children each) are on Friday evenings. Come on out and cheer them on! They are truly a delight to watch. Meets for the 4th-6th grades are on Saturday morning. Most meets are away at locations such as Prior Lake, Farmington and Eden Prairie. Special thanks to the EVAA Board for a grant to purchase new hurdles. They are gorgeous and have prevented many skinned knees! Wrestling The youth wrestling program had a very successful preseason clinic with another year of over 100 wrestlers participating. This was a great way for wrestlers to warm up for the in-house season and for other kids to give wrestling a try in a fun and safe environment. The EVAA in-house program had many great successes. The K-2nd grade group learned fundamental wrestling technique and worked on many drills to develop general athleticism. Practices were divided into two categories, clinic days and competition days. There were several EVAA in-house wrestlers that extended their season and wrestled at the MYAS state tournament. Placing 4th were Tom Delich and Jack Schliesman. Jaden Welborn, Brett Hestness, Sam Penders, and Zach Praus placed 5th. Fourteen other Eastview youth wrestlers qualified for and wrestled in the MYAS State Tournament but did not place. If you are interested in trying wrestling, there is an upcoming local option that is also affordable. The Eastview Wrestling Program will be hosting a camp this summer, July 19th – 22nd. The camp runs from The 3rd –6th grade group had a similar 9am to noon and includes athletic develseason with a couple of additional compe- opment drills and wrestling skills that tition days. From the President By Scott Selby, EVAA President As the incoming President of the Eastview Athletic Association, I am honored to have the opportunity to continue the work that has been demonstrated by our organization’s founders and previous boards. I would be remiss, if I did not take a moment and thank our previous President, Chuck Lloyd for his courageous leadership. In short, Chuck took the EVAA organization and placed it squarely on his back. His dedication, commitment and attention to detail has successfully steered our organization through a variety of issues. Additionally Chuck has led our organization to a solid financial foundation. I would also like to thank our previous board members for their service. It is with great pleasure that I welcome the incoming board members to our community. Volunteers have have always always been the backbone of EVAA and I encourage you to participate in been the any manner that your talents and time allow. I want to thank our new board backbone of members and volunteers in advance for the time and energy that will be EVAA put in place to continue the momentum. This diverse group of thinkers will continue to keep the EVAA goal of ―delivering a rich and varied sports environment‖ front and center of all decisions and build upon our heritage within the community. Volunteer s If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to your board members. And if you happen to see any of the volunteers helping enhance your child’s sports experiences, please stop and show them your appreciation. Page 5 Page 6 JO Volleyball The Eastview Lightning JO Volleyball team recently wrapped up a great season. They completed in the Panther Challenge in early February in Spring Lake Park. This was a small tournament with only 4 teams but a good first tournament for a young team. The team played solid volleyball and won the tournament. A few weeks later the team competed in the Silver Division of the NCR Presidents’ Day Festival tournament. This is a huge tournament and the silver division included 36 teams. This team played flawless volleyball through Saturday’s pool play and did not loose a single set in three matches. This continued through Sunday’s Volume 5, Issue 2 pool with the team losing only one set in three matches. The team entered bracket play tired but energized by their success. The team played three matches in brackets; all were hard fought and two of the matches went three sets. The team came out on top and won the tournament. It was an amazing two days of volleyball and the team was victorious because of focus, determination and the ability to gel as a team. When one player became tired and needed a break another player stepped up their play. Congratulations Thunder Bolts! Team members include Devynne Anderson, Abby Dettmer, Syd Dose, Hayley Ellingsen, Maddie Guentzel, Emily King, Amanda Oelke, Alita Prommachai, Paige Runing, and Ashley Surratt. The team is coached by Megan Cain, Kristin Dettmer, and Stephanie Uittenbogaard. This tal- ented group of young hoopsters made an unprecedented record of 48 -1 during the season. Going into the play-offs, they remained undefeated and the team to beat in the tournament. In a semi-final match-up against a strong Eden Prairie team, the Lightning fell one point short in a game that could have went either way. Eden Prairie was a team the Lightning had defeated twice before in the regular season but couldn't find the third time charm this time. While Eden Prairie eventually lost to a talented Farview team (whom the Lightning had also beaten twice during the regular season, including a suburb match-up at Eastview High School in March), the girls, their coaches, parents and fans found no reason to be disappointed in a season that everyone involved will remember for the rest of their lives. 48 - 1 in any sport is an admirable feat. As stated before, this group of young ladies representing Eastview Girls Basketball will be a strong force to reckon with in years to come. Congratulations Eastview 7A Girls for Third Place at State and a 48-1 record! Team members include Melissa Barry, Illea Decker, Madison Guebert, Maddie Haworth, Hana Metoxen, Claire Pueshner, Shelby Trusty and Maria Woehler. The team is coached by Melissa Guebert, Tom Barry, and Kurt Pueschner. Page 7 Eastview Extra Advertisement Rates Eastview Extra welcomes new sponsors.
