SPONSORING A SUMMER STAGE —
A JOB DONE WELL
Second Annual Lobster Roll
Eating Contest Schedules
Qualifying Rounds
John Nyhan, Chairman of the Hampton Beach Area Commission, recently spoke about the need to establish a temporary stage to
house the Summer entertainment usually held on the Seashell Stage.
Nyhan said, “Although the Hampton Beach State Park Project is 80%
completed, the Shell at the main stage
would not be completed by this summer.
Because of that, we had to develop the
Temporary Stage Task Force, because we
knew the permanent stage to replace the
Shell would not be ready for this summer’s entertainment. The task force was
comprised of Chuck Rage, Glen French,
and June White from the Hampton Beach
Village District; Doc Noel and Jude David from the Hampton Area
Chamber of Commerce; Tom Mansfield of the New Hampshire Division of Resources & Economic Development; and Bob Preston and me
from the Hampton Beach Area Commission.
“Time was a major factor, so we quickly identified three objectives
to accomplish in order to be ready for the summer. The first was where
to put the stage. We had to locate a site large enough to accommodate
the 36’x16’x32’ structure, or roughly the same size as the old stage. We
managed to secure a site across from Playland between B and C Streets.
“The second factor was identifying the necessary elements that made
up the stage area. This was a bit tricky. We had to be able to comfortably accommodate the stage and a seating area utilizing the State Park’s
benches. There will be seating on the adjacent side walks, and an area
for folks who want to bring their own lawn chairs. In addition, there
will be an area for handicapped individuals, and will feature plastic
flooring to allow for easy access by wheelchairs. Electricity will be
available through a conduit located on Ocean Boulevard.
“Having tents available for both the performers and the audience
means the productions will go on all summer long, rain or shine. The
tents will be provided by the Harvey Construction Company and Karl’s
Event Services. Those are the same people who provided the tenting
for the Seafood Festival.
“The third factor, and a huge one, was how to pay for this venture.
The estimated cost of the temporary stage and its operation is approximately $36,000. This does not take into account the cost of the
entertainment. In order to pay for the project, we developed a private/
public partnership plan. In essence, the State of New Hampshire will
provide $15,000 from beach project funding. The Hampton Beach Village District (HBVD) will come up with $15,000 with a request to pay
back as much of this amount as possible.
“The third aspect of the funding will come from sponsorships.
We were very fortunate to have Unitil step up and become our prime
sponsor for the entire twelve weeks of entertainment. Tim Noonis
from Unitil said, ‘Unitil is dedicated to the economic health of the
communities that we serve and we are proud to support this Public/
LIKE LOBSTER? How about taking on an
all-you-can-eat lobster roll buffet? On Saturday,
September 10th, 2011 at 2:30 pm, the Second Annual
Lobster Roll Eating Contest will take place at the
Hampton Beach Seafood Festival. Twelve lucky
contestants will be chosen to compete alongside four celebrities. $1,000
is on the line, with the winner receiving $600, second place taking home
$250, and third place leaving with $150. The winner will receive bragging rights along with automatic entry into next year’s competition.
The ten-minute eating frenzy is sponsored by The 401 Tavern and the
Pat Whitley Restaurant Show.
1st Place Winner for 2010 was Matthew Stonie, an amateur eater
from Hampton, NH. Matthew devoured 23½ lobster rolls in 10 minutes!
2nd Place Winner Tom Gilbert was a professional eater from Amherst,
Massachusetts, consuming 23 lobster rolls. If you did not have the opportunity to witness last year’s competition, you really have to come
down and see for yourself what an incredible escapade this is. The
excitement, the cheering crowds, it was quite a show!
Two qualifying rounds will take place on July 12th and August 16th
at The 401 Tavern at 6:00 pm. These initial rounds are hot dog eating
competitions to work up your appetite for the lobster rolls. The top
six winners of each qualifying round will receive the right to compete
in the Official Hampton Beach Seafood Festival Lobster Roll Eating
Contest on September 10, 2011
at 2:30 pm.
Think you have what it takes?
Then prove it. Qualifying rounds
are open to those 18 years or older
and applications will be taken
on-line at www.hamptonbeachseafoodfestival.com. Entry is
very limited and submitting an
application does not guarantee

Private Partnership in its efforts to keep entertainment alive and well
during the 2011 summer season while the Seashell stage is under construction.’ The task force also had to find additional sponsors, so we
knocked on a lot of doors, and we had some very interested parties
step up to participate. This group included: The Brow Family, the
Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom, The 401 Tavern, the Boardwalk Café
& Pub, Blink’s Fry Doe, Ocean Gaming, La Bec Rouge Restaurant, Sen.
Nancy Stiles, the Roy Family Properties, the Sea Ketch Restaurant, and
Seacoast Coca-Cola. Each sponsor will donate $500 to help us meet our
‘obligation’. In return, each sponsor will: be listed on the Chamber
of Commerce website; featured in the Chamber’s July newsletter; announced at the summer meeting as a sponsor; featured on the HBVD
website, and listed on all of the summer marketing posters. They will
also be introduced at the beginning of each show during the summer.”

The Hampton Area Chamber welcomes David J. Burbine Insurance Services as a new member. David supplied us with the following
open letter to the Chamber: “Someone recently said that ‘rather than
learning what you do, people care more about
why you do it.’ I am celebrating my 35th year in
the insurance and financial services business and
want to thank clients and friends for continuing
to place their trust in me to protect with insurance
what they value the most. This is the ‘why’ in
my purpose and mission.
“In 1985 I opened an independent office in
Hampton for Prudential Insurance located in the
Prudential Rush Realty building for 12 years. In
1997 Prudential Insurance decided to downgrade
their insurance company corporately. I decided
to pursue my successful practice as an independent insurance broker.
After investigating most of the insurance companies available, I decided
to become affiliated with the Alliance Group in 2009 because they were
doing what no one else thought to do. They understood that helping
people survive life’s financial emergencies while living may be more
critically urgent than delivering a claim check at the time of death. We
refer to this as ‘Living Benefits’. All too often, our friends and family
members become chronically, critically, or terminally ill (heart attack,
stroke, or diagnosis of cancer for example) and need financial help
now to make up for lost earnings, increased expenses, or a pending
foreclosure and/or bankruptcy.
“Imagine knowing that you could access up to 90% of the policies
face amount, while living, to be used any way you see fit. It may mean
the difference between financial life and death while a client is still living! Why would anyone want to own life insurance protection without
‘Living Benefits’—Included At No Additional Charge?
“It has truly changed the lives of clients who have made claims
and reinforced the ‘why’ in my mission of dedication to continue
my work with passion and caring. If you have any questions or want
more information about a specific subject or concern, please feel free
to contact me.”
