A Message from the President
–By Harry Williams
The annual Foundation Gala--this year
themed a “Soirée Unique”--was a fabulous evening with cool jazz, a wonderful
display of fine art, and a delicious dinner.
Guests were treated to the music of Gary
Lamb’s quartet during the cocktail hour
while having the opportunity to view fifty
pieces of original art, including works
by Picasso and Matisse. Many thanks to
Walls Gallery for making all this special art available for our enjoyment. We
would also like to thank CCL Chef Kevin
O’Connell, Banquet Director Jamie Kury,
and their staffs for sensational food and
service.
The format for this year’s gala included
not only the Saturday night event, but
also a Thursday evening artists’ reception for all Landfall residents. Several of
the contributing artists were present and
discussed their works with many of the
250 attendees as they viewed the art and
enjoyed hors d’oeuvres donated by Opus
Contemporary Cuisine.
I want to personally express the Foundation’s appreciation to Mary Lou Bryden
for chairing the gala events with her cochair Bill Bryden. In addition, a tireless
group of residents comprised the gala
committees--listed on page 3--that were
responsible for all the various activities
that are necessary to have a successful
event. Thanks to everyone who donated
their time and talents to make the gala an
outstanding fund raiser.
The financial results for the gala are
always important and of interest to our
patrons. This year we increased our sponsorships by fifty percent, which resulted
in a record contribution level of $138,500.
I would like to thank each sponsor for
making it possible for the Foundation to
continue our supporting grants to many
local charities. The auction and art sales
produced $37,000 due to the high quality
of the items and outstanding artwork that
was sold. Finally, ticket sales and donations equaled $38,500 for total receipts of
$214,000. Offset by expenses, the total
net income for the Foundation came to
$179,000.
In addition, I would like to thank all
of our 2006 donors to the Foundation,
listed on pages 6, 7, and 10. Since the
Foundation’s inception in 1996, we have
contributed more than $1.1 million to
many worthwhile charities in the Greater
Wilmington area. It is only through the
continued support of our residents that
the mission of the Foundation is being
accomplished.

Landfall Foundation
Grants Report
By Welton Curtis Sewell
The Grants Committee is looking forward to receiving grant applications for the Foundation’s 2007 funding cycle. In
2006, the Committee reviewed 99 applications and made recommendations to the Foundation Board to fund 61 agencies
in amounts totaling $187,932. Those agencies receiving grants in 2006 will be making their reports to the Grants Committee no later than June 12, 2007. For 2007, the Committee is pleased to report that the Foundation Board has increased
the maximum amount of each grant to $6,000. Five copies of the application, available on the Foundation website (www.
LandfallFoundation.org), must be mailed by U.S. Postal Service only to Landfall Foundation Grants Committee, 1924
Pembroke Jones Drive, Wilmington, NC 28405, and received no later that June 20, 2007.
The 11 members of the Grants Committee, in essence, serve as stewards of the generous contributions made by Landfall
residents for the benefit of the arts, education, and health and welfare in the greater Wilmington community. Accordingly, each application will be carefully reviewed and considered first by the appropriate subcommittee, and then by the
Committee as a whole, before recommendations are made to the Foundation Board in September. The Arts subcommittee is chaired by Deloris Rhodes and includes Pamela Bradley and Curtis Sewell. Nancy
Burton chairs the Education subcommittee, and its members are Pete Clow, Gary Gischel,
and Judy Malman. The Health and Welfare subcommittee is chaired by Sheila Saklad and
includes Ronald Cook, Bill McMillan, and Loretta Meyers. This year’s awards presentation
and reception will be held at 4 PM on Thursday, November 8, in the Nicklaus Ballroom, and
Landfall residents are invited to attend.
The Grants Committee hopes to recommend grants this year that will make an even greater
impact in the Wilmington community. All grants are possible, of course, because of the continued generous support of the Foundation by Landfall residents. Please feel free to contact
Grants Chairman Curtis Sewell, 256-5355 or wsewell@ec.rr.com, with any comments or
questions.
A Special Grant
New Kitchen Equipment for Good Shepherd Center
By Mimi Cunningham
Chef O’Connell, Bruce Gibson, Jack Erdody, Ned Olds
To commemorate its first major capital donation--a grant
to Good Shepherd Center--the Board of the Landfall Foundation joined Landfall Country Club’s Executive Chef
Kevin O’Connell and community notables for a celebration
breakfast at the Center on March 22. The grant money went
toward purchase and installation of a 60-inch gas range with
10 burners and two lower convection ovens, a 40-inch double deck convection oven, a 24-inch flat gas grill on a stand,
and a 48-inch hood addition for Good Shepherd’s soup
kitchen. Wearing signature Landfall Foundation aprons,
Chef O’Connell and his team used the new equipment to
prepare a special breakfast where the Foundation’s contribution was recognized with a plaque.

Gala – A Huge Success
LIVE AUCTION
Laura Wilson
By Mary Lou Bryden
This year’s Landfall Foundation Gala
fundraiser has once again proven to
be a very successful event. It began
with the week’s appearance of over
50 pieces of original art from Walls
Gallery on Wrightsville Avenue, hung
throughout the clubhouse, all marked
for sale, tax-free, with 10% of sales
going to our Foundation. On Thursday evening, April 19th, an artists’
reception was held for all residents
of Landfall to meet the artists, bid on
the silent and live auction items, and
enjoy the hors d’oeuvres provided by
Opus Restaurant in Lumina Station.
For the first time, both the silent and
the live auction items, as well as
the art for sale were visible on our
www.Landfallfoundation.org website for the weeks leading up to the
Gala itself. The “Soiree’ Unique”
Gala was held in the Nicklaus Club-

house, featuring an elegant black tie
5-course dinner, prepared by CCL
Executive Chef Kevin O’Connell and
his staff, and dancing to the music
of Gary Lamb’s band. Alan Perry,
of Perry’s Emporium, ran the live
auction, which included a golf cruise
with tickets to the British Open, as
well as other trips, dinners, jewelry,
and original artwork. Walls Gallery,
who provided all the art decorating
the club, also donated two paintings
for the auction.
To date the gala has brought in more
than $130,000 in sponsor donations,
art, auction, and ticket sales. This is
the primary fundraiser of the year,
which will benefit the Wilmington
community in the form of grants
awarded to non-profit service organizations in Pender, Brunswick, and
New Hanover Counties. Over the last
11 years, the Foundation has given
out grants totaling over $1,000,000.

A Special Grant
Continued from page 2
“The Foundation Board learned about
kitchen problems at Good Shepherd
from a Landfall resident, and we
invited Executive Director Katrina
Knight and several of her board
members to make a presentation giving a detailed outline of their kitchen
project needs,” said Harry Williams,
president of the Landfall Foundation.
“Based on Katrina’s presentation, the
Board felt there was a real opportunity to help a large number of individuals in our community by making
up to a $25,000 capital donation to
Good Shepherd. The gift is consistent with the Landfall Foundation’s
mission that focuses on education,
the arts, and health and welfare; and
it will greatly enhance the efforts of
the more than 50 Landfall residents
who regularly volunteer at the Good
Shepherd Center preparing meals.”
On a typical weekday, Good Shepherd’s soup kitchen serves 230
lunches. Although it operates out of
a relative new building, the organization was prevented by budget constraints from purchasing new restaurant-sized equipment suitable for the
volume of food being prepared. Good
Shepherd Center provides the Lower
Cape Fear area’s only comprehensive
outreach to the homeless and operates
day and evening shelters as well as a
soup kitchen that provides approximately 130,000 meals a year with a
paid staff of 10 and approximately
260 volunteers.

SCHOLARSHIP REPORT
By Bob Rothermel
The Landfall Foundation is extremely proud of our community’s working scholars. You probably see many of them frequently but may not realize that the
individual serving you in their capacity as an employee of the CCL or the LCoA
is a beneficiary of the Foundation and its Scholarship Program. Each of these
individuals maintains an academic record that exceeds our standard and works
an average of approximately 15 to 20 hours per week. Please congratulate them
on their achievements when you next greet them and remember this aspect of
your Foundation’s work when you consider your next contribution. The scholarship and other grants programs have grown dramatically over the past 2 years,
and we are pleased that the CCL Board has pledged $20,000 to help cover our
likely grants for 2007 and that the LCoA is also contributing a proportional
amount. In concert with CCL we are planning various changes to the program
to maintain a balance between scholarships and other Foundation priorities.
The scholars as of the beginning of
2007 include the following 37 students.

Treasurer’s Report
By Jack Erdody
The Landfall community made 2006
another record year for the Landfall
Foundation. Revenues from the
annual gala, Commedia Dell’Arte,
donations, and other income were
$205,000, an increase of 5% from
2005. Expenses, at $10,200, were
only 5% of revenues, thanks to the
hard work of the many generous
people who contribute their time and
talent in addition to money.
Foundation grants to 61 local area
nonprofit organizations totaled
$187,932 in 2006, compared to
$164,675 in 2005. In addition,
the scholarship program provided
over $44,000 to 51 CCL and LCoA
employees, compared to $12,000 in
2005 and $8,000 in 2004. The Frank
H. Kenan Chapel received $5,000
to support its concert series. The
$238,000 in total disbursements, 31%
more than 2005, was a new high, and
the Board is optimistic in its outlook
for the future.
2007 is progressing as another very
good year. The “Soirée Unique” gala
was a fun-filled, elegant event, providing $179,000 for the Foundation’s
outreach programs. To date, $38,400
in scholarships has been provided
to CCL and LCoA employees, and
$19,000 was given as a special grant
to the Good Shepherd Center to upgrade their kitchen.
The Foundation thanks the Landfall
property owners for their continued
generosity and asks every resident to
consider giving. As a reminder, many
corporations support a matching gift
program to charities for employees
and retirees. We are happy to work
with these organizations to obtain
matches to your donations.
A convenient Contribution/Pledge
Form is included in this newsletter
for those have not given this year or
would like to add to a previous gift.
All amounts are appreciated. Remember that a gift to the Foundation
is a nice way to honor someone on a
special occasion, to say thanks, or as
a memorial. For your convenience,
the Foundation accepts Visa and MasterCard, and gladly accepts donations
of stocks or bonds. For assistance
with any transaction, call Jack Erdody
at 509-1788.
