SPRING 2014 PAL AROUND WITH US THIS SPRING SPRING YOUTH CENTER HOURS: Monday-Friday 2:30-6:30PM PAL’S BREAKFAST CLUB: PAL members can attend PAL all day (8:30-5:30) on certain non-school days, $5 per day. Spring non-school days: Friday, May 23 Beaverton PAL Closures: Friday, April 25 Monday, May 26 TO BECOME A PAL MEMBER: Applications are now available online and at our youth center! This school year we will be implementing an annual fee that's good for the FALL 2013 - FALL 2014. The annual membership fees are $100 or $60 (with proof of free or reduce lunch at the schools). Memberships will be honored for the after school program and summer program of that respective year. Payments plans are available. Last day o fA School Pro fter gram June 11! 2nd PAL Dinner & Auction a Success On April 5th, the 2nd Annual Dinner & Auction was held at the Tiger Woods Nike Center. This year’s theme was Cowboy/Cowgirl Western theme. With over hundreds of auction items and many participants the auction raised over $30,000 to go towards the PAL Center and youth. Some of our PAL members performed to the ‘Watermelon Crawl’ and also got some participants to join in on their ‘Happy’ dance. Executive Director, Jocelyn Simpson, said the people were raving about the kids and their dance abilities. “We raised a lot of money to go towards the kids and our program! They’ve also included their own stories on how they make the world a better place. Page 2 Lill’s Kitchen Gets A New Makeover PAL was a recipient of a Bimbo Bakery grant that gave the kitchen an upgrade of appliances. PAL received a new refrigerator, dishwasher, double oven stove, microwave, popcorn machine and a new counter top to be done on April 25th. These new appliances will help provide more meals and to help PAL be more updated with the current health codes. A feature that will also be included to the new makeover, is back splash of tiles that are individually painted by PAL members, volunteers, and donators! BOXING TEAM UPDATE Garden Club In the month of March, the team has participated in about 20 matches. The team has many more bouts upcoming, including their Boxing Show on May 17. The team plans to compete for National Titles in Oxnard, California and Mesquite, Nevada in June and July 2014. PAL has partnered with Beaverton’s Garden Club to revamp the PAL garden in the back. The garden was tilled over and now has a trellis, and a few raised garden beds. “We planted radishes, red potatoes, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries”, said PAL member Claire Carter. “I joined the club to help make the plants grow and then to eat them after”, said PAL member Divine Crane. PAL members can earn treats and field trips depending on how many times they participate in the Homework Club. During Girls' Club meetings, the youth develop skills to help them better deal with peer pressure, establish self-worth and confidence, create short and long-term goals, and focus on optimism. ZUMBA: Join in on the Latin-inspired dance fitness program. You'll learn choreography and dance moves from salsa, samba, merengue, and mamba. Youth Leadership: To be a part of the YLT, you must be 12-18 years of age, pledge to be drug, alcohol, and tobacco free, positively represent Beaverton PAL, be a positive role model, conduct meaningful community service projects, be part of the National PAL Youth Leadership Program, develop and enhance skills in our monthly leadership trainings. Chess Club: Learn to play chess or improve your chess game and learn new tactics from experienced players. Players will also have an opportunity to participate in tournaments. Garden Club: Come watch the plants of the PAL Garden grow and blossom. Participants will learn new skills like: planting, watering, weeding, and maintenance. Cooking: PAL members will learn how to prepare and cook various treats and eat them afterwards. Boxing: Boxing practices every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:00pm-8:00pm; Tuesdays & Thursday 5:00-7:00PM. “Beaverton PAL is a safe and affordable kids program aimed at building partnerships between youth, police, and the community through recreational, educational, and enrichment programs designed to encourage and develop good citizenship and improve the quality of life in the community. Hours are 8:30-5:30 PM. Breakfast, lunch, and a light snack will be provided. Field trips are available to PAL Summer Campers. Summer Camp is $65 or $45 if you qualify for free or reduce lunch for the whole week… $15 for one day for current PAL Members. Pay for 8 weeks and get the 1 week for free. To become a PAL Member, you will need to fill out a current PAL Membership and have paid the Membership fee, $100 or $60 if you qualify for free or reduce lunch. Sign-ups for Summer Camp begin May 1st! For those 11 years of age and up we will be offering a Teen Technology Camp. Learn different programming and software in our Intel Computer Clubhouse.
