2) Remove brake caliper mounting bolts & hang brake calipers to prevent
damaging the flexible brake lines (photo 2).
Tech Points:
The factory JK front axle shafts utilize a "C" clip to retain the
u-joint caps. Over time, with the stresses of larger tires, offroad use, and low range torque, the u-joint caps can spin
and dislodge the "C" clip, causing the shaft to fail at the ujoint (see photo A). When the factory rear axle shafts fail, it's
usually inside the housing near the splines.
Superior Axle makes stronger-than-stock Chrome-Moly
replacement axle sets for the front and rear of the JK. The
Superior front axles use a snap ring to retain the u-joint caps
which can't dislodge like a "C" clip.
With Superior's Chrome-Moly Axle Shafts installed, you'll
have increased peace of mind when you hit the trail.

5) Remove three 12 point bolts attaching bearing assembly. Disconnect
ABS sensor (photos 5 & 6).

8) Compare your stock axle shaft with the new replacement to ensure you
have the proper application. Assemble new axle shaft and stub shaft with
new u-joint and snap rings.
9) Reverse steps for re-assembly. Use caution when installing new axle
shaft to avoid damaging inner seal.

6) Since we are replacing our differential covers, we removed the factory
cover and drained the gear oil. If you aren't replacing your cover or servicing
your axle, we recommend doing one side at a time. This way, you can
elevate one side of the axle to prevent the gear oil from entering the tube
when you remove the axle shaft, which can make a mess (photo 7).
10) The G2 cover adds protection and good looks (photo 9a).

4) Remove ABS sensor (photo 12).
Rear Installation:
1) Remove wheels.
2) Unbolt brake calipers & hang to prevent flexible brake line damage (photo
10).

5) Remove 4 axle retaining nuts (each side). Disconnect parking brake
cable from backing plate. Be careful not to release both parking brake
cables at the same time! This can cause the cables to retract in at the
parking brake handle assembly and is difficult to release. One way to avoid
this situation is to clamp the cables when you pull them to release them
from the mounting tabs (photos 13-15).

3) Remove rotors (photo 11).

7) Install the new wheel studs in the new axles. Pay attention to the bolt
pattern! The new axles are dual-pattern (5 on 5 & 5 on 5.5). The JK factory
pattern is 5 on 5, which is the smaller bolt circle on the shafts (photo 17).

8) Remove axles and compare with the new replacements to ensure you
have the proper application. Remove the bearing races from the housing
(photos 18 & 18a)

6) Since we are replacing our differential covers, we removed the factory
cover and drained the gear oil. If you aren't replacing your cover or servicing
your axle, we recommend doing one side at a time. This way, you can
elevate one side of the axle to prevent the gear oil from running out of the
axle tube when you remove the axle shaft, which can make a mess (photo

9) If you don't have the tools and a press, take your stock axles and the new
ones along with the new bearings and retaining collars, to an auto shop.
They can remove your factory axle retaining plates and ABS rings and reinstall them along with the new bearings and collars on the new shafts.
10) Reverse steps for re-assembly.
11) Our finishing touch was a G2 cover to match the front (photo 19).
