Solstice Shutter Reference Guide August 2014 Overview American-Made Because It Matters All shutters are manufactured in Houston Texas in a state-of-the-art 125,000 square foot facility. “Made in the USA” offers great advantages to you. Manufacturing time is approximately 14 days. From this central U.S. location, you’ll receive your custom-made shutters in 3 – 4 weeks (inclusive of shipping time). You’ll also have the comfort of knowing that U.S. standards of quality and manufacturing are built-in. Installation-Driven Manufacturing Our processes are designed with one primary goal in mind: ensure the installation will be simple, efficient and successful. From pre-assembled frames to our unique methodology in shipping, you’ll experience a level of understanding and care that is uncommon in the industry. Highlights Finishes: All finishes, paints and stains, are environmentally friendly water-borne coatings with UV inhibitors. Frames: A variety of frames are offered for both inside-mount and face-mount installations. Face mount should be the preferred option whenever possible as it eliminates out of squareness issues and solves tilt-in window and moveable screen complexities. See frame schematics for detailed dimension specifications. Arched Panels, Sunbursts & Special Shapes: All louvers are functional. No stationary louvers. Shutters offer the best solution to match the architectural design of the windows and are also a perfect option for any complicated window scenarios. Economy Post Oak Arches: See details on our economy solutions for arched windows. Clearview Feature: Our proprietary design features a laser-cut steel strip offset on the rear of the shutter. For painted shutters, the strip will be painted the same color as the shutter. For stain shutters, the strip will be a nickel-colored finish. 1 Dealer Guide.2014 Overview (Continued) Shutter Types Premium Hardwood Paint Grade: Paint grade shutters and frames are manufactured from kiln dried hardwoods, typically poplar. Some nonlinear components, such as arched top rails, certain arched frames and tilt rods are manufactured from ABS synthetic materials. Premium Hardwood Stain Grade: Stain grade shutters and frames are manufactured from kiln dried basswood, which is harvested from estate farmed U.S. forests. 2 Dealer Guide.2014 Tilt Options Clearview Feature – Hidden (Rear) Tilt Control Classic Style – Front Tilt Control Classic Style – Front Tilt Control: All louvers are connected to the front tilt rod, which is positioned in the center of the panel. Touch a louver or the tilt rod to move all louvers within the panel. An offset Classic Style Front Tilt Control is available upon request. Clearview Feature – Hidden (Rear) Tilt Control: All louvers are connected to a rear tilt mechanism, which is a laser cut steel strip offset to the side of the panel. Touch any louver to move all louvers within the panel. Benefits: Cleaner appearance; updated look. Louver Size Considerations: The selection of louver size has a major impact on the design aesthetic as the photographs above demonstrate. In selecting the louver size, keep in mind the available clearance depth in the window or door. You will need to make certain your frame choice will accommodate the depth requirements for the louver size. Refer to our Louver Clearance Diagram for more information. 4 Dealer Guide.2014 Louver Clearance Louver clearance is a critical element to measuring shutters correctly. Please see the diagrams below as a guideline, these are minimum requirements. When measuring, be sure to account for mullions, locks, crank handles, and other obstructions that may interfere with pivot of louvers. Block horizontal mullions in the window from sight and may even be used to block obtrusions that interfere with louver movement. a. Panels greater than 30” in width require a divider rail over 72” in height. b. Panels less than or equal to 30” in width require a divider rail over 84” in height. c. Panels greater than 98” in height MUST be double hung. Only one divider rail per shutter panel is available. 2. Increases panel stability in tall panels. Divider rails are required for panels over 84” in height for Premium Hardwood and 72” in height. Notes: Variances of up to 1” can occur from the provided divider rail dimension as it is a function of the overall height and the louver spacing. We offer one divider rail per panel; no “double divider” rails. Measuring for Divider Rails: Window Size Measurements: Record measurement from the bottom of the window opening to the desired center point of the divider rail. OD Measurements: Record measurement from the bottom of the frame to the desired center point of the divider rail. Divider Rails Sizes: The divider rail is 3” in height. 6 Dealer Guide.2014 Door Handle Modifications Style and Frame May be wider on the Cut-Out side Door Handle Obstructions: The Door Handle Measuring Diagram is required to ensure all dimensions needed for manufacturing are specified. The size (width and height) of the modification will be customized based on your measurements. Factors to keep in mind: Upper deadbolt locksets sometimes require frame modifications as well. Side by side door configurations: the frame modifications will not match if the hardware locations are different. Alert the Homeowner on the front end. Instead, they slide on top tracks to open and close. Two tracks are required so that the panels can slide past each other. When two panels slide in the same direction on one track, they will be screwed together. Note: The louvers must be in the closed position to slide one panel in front of another. The panels have glides positioned on the bottom to prevent panel swing when sliding. A valance covers the track system. Double and Triple track systems are available. Installation: The track is installed directly into the wall above the door. The frames will be 3 sided. You will not need to install anything directly into the floor. Up to eight panels may be hinged together in a bi-fold sliding track system. A valance covers the track system. Installation: The track is installed directly into the wall above the door. The frames will be 3 sided. You will not need to install anything directly into the floor. Louvers will be moveable, in full or part. The slope of the arch determines the extent of louver operation. Provide photographs & templates for any unusual configurations or shapes. Front facing garage windows, upstairs game rooms or children’s bedrooms are common applications. The arched portion of each panel is fitted with a solid MDF insert and the louver shape is etched into the insert on the front and the back. The solid insert replaces any and all louvers in the curved portion of the panel. Note: On a 4 panel configuration, the inserts will not line up horizontally since the curved portion differs between the inner and outer panels. The most common types are full radius, eyebrow (lazy) and quarter circle. Each louver in the sunburst is independently moveable. The louvers are spring-loaded and lift out if needed. Notes: Sunburst applications include free standing, with or without a windowsill, or above shutter panels. Step 2: Height dimensions – A minimum of 3 height dimensions are needed. Overall center height, left leg and right leg dimensions will be needed. The most common shapes are shown above but other shapes are also possible. The maximum size is 44” in diameter. Please contact us for larger sizes. Rake tops or triangular shapes should be quoted as Arched Panels. In addition to being hinged from the frames, the panels can be hinged from the T Posts, which serve as intermediate vertical supports. Two panels may also be hinged together in a bi-fold design. The most common types of standard panel configurations are illustrated on the following pages. Proceed with caution in selecting this type of installation. Gaps between the outer edge of the frame and the casement may require caulking. Not recommended for stain applications. Installation will likely prohibit operation of tilt in windows or removal of window screens. Outside Face Mount L Frame Application: Excellent for mounting on top of trim or sheetrock and for use with paint or stain grade applications. Hides out of squareness and allows for tilt in window operation or removable screens. Frame Notes: All frames are manufactured as 4 sided. If a windowsill is specified, a sill spacer will be placed at the bottom and will rest on top of the windowsill. 28 Dealer Guide.2014 Frame Specifications - Wood Deco L Frame (Door Frame) 2-1/2” Louver Door Frame 3-1/2” Louver Door Frame 4-1/2” Louver Door Frame Deco L Frame (Door Frame) Application: Door Frame should be specified on all door applications. The height of the frame is determined by the louver size selection to allow clearance off the glass. It is not necessary to specify build out for doors. Frame Notes: All frames are manufactured as 4 sided. 29 Dealer Guide.2014 Frame Specifications - Wood Special Deco L Frame (Door Frame for Molding Applications) 2-1/2” Louver Door Frame 3-1/2” Louver Door Frame 4-1/2” Louver Door Frame Special Deco L Frame (Door Frame for Molding Applications): If the door has trim molding around the glass, this type of frame will allow for the best fit around the glass. The frame is notched to cover the molding. Measure points are outside edge of trim molding to outside edge of trim molding on all sides. The height of the frame is determined by the louver size selection to allow clearance off the glass. It is not necessary to specify build out for doors. Frame Notes: All frames are manufactured as 4 sided. 30 Dealer Guide.2014 Measuring Inside Mount Step 1: Measure window DEPTH for louver clearance (see chart) Step 2: Measure window WIDTH in three places (top, middle and bottom). Record the smallest measurement for INSIDE MOUNTS or the largest measurement for OUTSIDE FACE MOUNTS. Step 3: Measure window HEIGHT in three places (left, middle and right). Record the smallest measurement for INSIDE MOUNTS or the largest measurement for OUTSIDE FACE MOUNTS. Step 4: Check for squareness by measuring the diagonals. These measurements should not differ by more than ½”. If a bigger variance is recorded, face mount is recommended. Factory Deductions: Clearance deductions of 1/8” on width and 3/16” on height will be taken by the factory when inside mount is noted on the order form. step 2 step 3 step 4 31 Dealer Guide.2014 Measuring When ordering, you will be asked to specify your measurement method pursuant to one of the following diagrams: Inside Mount: Inside dimensions for Inside Mount (Provide measurements of opening Factory deductions will be taken) Outside Mount: OD dimensions for Outside / Face Mount (Provide measurements to outside edge of frame – No factory deductions will be taken) 32 Dealer Guide.2014 Measuring - Door Handles 33 Dealer Guide.2014 Installation General Our goal is to provide you with shutter panels and frames that facilitate a smooth installation process. Steps: 1. Open the panels in the frame and pre-drill the mounting screw holes. 2. Place framed shutter in the window opening. If a windowsill is in place, you may rest the shutters and frame on the sill for support. If there is not a windowsill, you can carefully remove the hinge pins and remove the panels from the frames. In this manner, you can install the frame first and then slide in the panels. This method is also appropriate for larger openings or installations that require a ladder. 3. Attach the frame securely to the wall starting with the top hinge of the opening. 4. Place the panels in the frame (if removed in step 2). 5. Close panels to check the fit and see if shimming or adjusting is necessary. As much as possible, the clearance gaps between the frame and the panels should be even all around and the panels should line up at the top. 6. Once satisfied, fasten the remaining frame screws, hinge side first, then magnet side. Take care to keep frame legs straight. 34 Dealer Guide.2014 Repairs & Adjustments Tension Screw Adjustments 1. Locate the tension screw hole in the side of the stile. 2. Tighten or loosen as necessary using a Phillips screwdriver. 3. Make adjustments to both the right and left side of the panel. Staples, screws) If the louver you are replacing has the tension control screw, use a Phillips head screwdriver to back screw out and replace.
