Twelve months went by in a blur with so many fun events, almost 50 for the year. Some personal highlights include the Tire Rack Street Survival School, where we help young drivers develop car control skills that may save their lives. 2015 celebrated the return of Autocross to our region, giving our members the opportunity to test the handling limits of their cars in a safe environment. Of course, the marquee event for the year was the Concours at Sherwood Country Club, a perfect day in a gorgeous setting. Nationally, Der Auspuff was recMIKE HODSON ognized as the best newsletter of the year with the presentation of the Betty Jo Turner Award to our Editor, John Alfenito. It is indeed an honor to have John in our region. Your board has been working hard to make sure that 2016 will be another exciting year for our members. We begin the year with a long weekend visit to Coronado Island, followed by monthly events taking us to interesting and different destinations. Our goal is to explore new areas of interest to keep the event schedule fresh and lively. Meanwhile, traditional events, such as the Progressive Dinner, Chili Cook-off and Concours, The Best of All Worlds Unique among shops serving Porsche owners, MKS Performance has no limits. From 356 to 911 and 991. And everything in between. Mike Schatz started his career in 1980 at Redline Service in Santa Monica and moved on to Rusnak in Thousand Oaks, earning Master Tech certification on the new generations of Porsche cars and SUVs. As a consequence, other Porsche repair shops often call Mike Schatz for advice. From maintenance to modifications, MKS is your best choice. We realize that our members look forward to these annual events. Two autocrosses are scheduled for the year, one in the spring and another in the fall. In recognition of our new members and our legacy members, a picnic is scheduled for June. Our motive is to welcome new members and help them get acquainted as well as to salute our legacy members for their loyalty to our club. It wasn’t too long after joining PCA in 2002 that I became an informal volunteer. My help was appreciated, and I never sensed the us-versus-them culture that is so typical in organizations of any type. As a family, we always felt sincerely welcomed at PCASBR events which, sadly, is not always the case when special needs folks are involved. Nobody in the club cared that I didn’t have the latest, greatest, most expensive car in the lot. My experience with other clubs and organizations was seldom positive. Initially, the group may seem inviting; however, quickly the reality phase sets in. The subtleties of personality conflicts and political maneuvering have always been lost on me. My very literal nature has served me well at times; other times, it has been a tremendous liability. Never having to think about such things made my enjoyment of our club much better. “It’s not the cars, it’s the people” is more than just a slogan. Those who are not involved in PCA often perceive us as a snobby bunch, when quite the opposite is true. Celebrating my 15th year of membership and the beginning of my second term as President, I am grateful for the lifelong friendships that I have made and for the wonderful memories of so many special events over the years. Thanks to everyone in the club for making 2015 one of the best years of my life. 2016 promises to be even better! For more information, call Dustin Troyan at 818.584.3240 and visit www.lavaggio.net From The Editor’s Desk bara Region who have acquired Club Coupes. With four CCs, SBR must certainly lead all other regions. My understanding is that 14 of the 60 cars went to California! My special thanks to Keith Goldberg at Rusnak/Westlake Porsche and to Adam Chirchick. Both of these fine JOHN ALFENITO gentlemen put up with my frequent inquiries about the car’s progress (as the months crept by). They were wonderful to deal with and, if I was annoying them, they never let on. We are very happy with the car, and I promise to stop talking about it all the time in the next few weeks (months?). Speaking of new cars, I visited the Los Angeles International Auto Show (see front cover) in November and spent some time shooting pictures at the Porsche exhibit in Petree Hall. The photos are on page 25. I hope you enjoy them. As always, Porsche’s display was impressive. JANUARY 2O16 AUSPUFF DE R I am truly looking forward to the new year, and many of you know why. Early last year, Porsche Club of America announced the Carrera GTS “Club Coupe,” which was to be a limited edition run of 60 cars to commemorate PCA’s 60th Anniversary. PCA members who were interested in the chance to buy one of these special cars were encouraged to submit their names for a “lotto drawing.” I put my name in the hat, and I was notified I had been selected in March! Naturally, Pam & I were very excited, and we began to make plans for the new Porsche’s arrival. Little did we know at the time that the new Club Coupe would not be in our hands until nine months later. Well, to make a long-ish story short, we took delivery of our 2016 Carrera GTS Club Coupe on the day before Thanksgiving. It was well worth the wait. The color, as you can hopefully see in the photo, is stunning. “Club Blau” was specially created for these 60 cars and was inspired by the blue in the PCA logo. Porsche says the color will remain exclusive to the Club Coupes. Approaching Santa Ynez, our impressive caravan of cars navigated the roundabout at the Highway 246 junction, continued on 154 to Edison Street to follow the back roads through farms and ranches toward Ballard. Following Baseline Avenue to Alamo Pintado, we arrived at our first stop, Lincourt Vineyard. Nestled under California pepper trees and overlooking the Alamo Pintado Vineyard near Solvang, Lincourt retains the rural charm and simplicity of an earlier era. Once a dairy property, the old farmhouse, which is an original 1926 Sears Craftsman kit home, served as our tasting room. The Lincourt picnic grounds, lawns and gardens would be the perfect spot to spend a leisurely day with family and friends and a bottle of wine. Following a private wine tasting at Lincourt, we drove through the quaint Danish town of Solvang, out Hwy 246 and just beyond Buellton, arriving at Pence Ranch for a unique wine- tasting experience along with gourmet box lunches catered by Fresco Valley Cafe in Solvang. Leah & Tony Punches The 200-acre Pence Ranch, in addition to being a small artisanal winery, is a working ranch that also raises horses, cattle and chickens, plus it grows its own grain and hay to feed them. There are also several peacocks that live on the property. One of the showpieces of the Pence Ranch, beyond the charmingly rustic tasting area, is the beautifully landscaped and tranquil pond area, with swimming ducks and a large, covered cabana. Members enjoyed the box lunches on the patio outside the tasting room. Winery personnel served a lovely assortment of wines throughout our meal and provided some interesting facts about their winery. Then they took us on a tour of the grounds and pond area. Our next stop was a little farther down Highway 246 to the Mediterranean-style Melville Vineyards & Winery where we finished out our afternoon. Melville is located in the Santa Rita Hills, an area between Buellton and Lompoc. It’s exposed to coastal fog and ocean breezes, which produces a cool microclimate, ideal for growing wine grapes. The Santa Rita Hills are known for chardonnay, pinot noir and syrah varietal wines. Set back off Highway 246, you enter the property through a lovely, poplar tree-lined road, which opens up to the spectacular vineyards and tasting room. Melville boasts a gorgeous Tuscan-style tasting room and spectacular views of the vineyards and surrounding mountains. We were treated to excellent wine varieties and a very welcoming staff. The temperatures were in the mid-80s, so everyone welcomed the cool breeze and shade available at this location while we enjoyed the wine and camaraderie of fellow members before departing back home. Special thanks to Nicolas Liakas for serving as our photographer and also to Carol Barber, Harriet Edwards, Doreen Pankow, Richard Kelman and Patti McCourt, all of whom helped with logistics throughout the day. = JANUARY 2O16 AUSPUFF DE R Bobbi & Dick Ditri recently transferred from the L.A. New members and legacy members exchanged warm greetings while anticipating the meal to be consumed and the program to be enjoyed. A short welcome speech was made, and then off to the chow line we went! Spanish Hills Country Club is well known for its delicious meals, a reputation much deserved. Our members feasted on tasty pastries and breakfast goodies from applewood bacon to smoked salmon and made-to-order omelets. If all that wasn’t enough, lunch treats starting with savory green and fruit salads went perfectly with tri-tip, chicken and veggies. Those with enough courage and/or room braved the dessert table for the perfect finale to a sumptuous meal. Some members, myself included, thought a short nap would be pleasant after all those calories! No time for napping, however, as the annual brunch is also our General Membership meeting for the year, and there was business to be handled. First on the agenda was welcoming guests, sponsors and advertisers and thanking them for their support of our region. Attending from Santa Barbara Auto Group were Walt & Rebecca Branscome. Rusnak Westlake Porsche was represented by Sam & Lacy Abergel along with Carl Bell. Joe & Kathy Schneider from Schneider Autohaus attended, as well as Neil & Stacey McAuliffe and Desmond Warren. Michael Dunwell and Allan Byrne joined us from Sir Speedy in Camarillo, the folks who print Der Auspuff every month. Seven past Region presidents were recognized and thanked for their service and dedication to the Region, as were the Board of Directors members from 2015. Activities Chair Doreen Pankow was thanked also for the outstanding events she produced for the year, and individuals who coordinated specific events throughout 2015 were also mentioned for their hard work. Our esteemed Der Auspuff Editor, John Alfenito, received a huge round of applause for winning the Betty Jo Turner Award, which was presented to the most outstanding newsletter editor in PCA at the Porsche Parade 2015 in French Lick, Indiana. It was noted that John won the award despite competing against other regions much larger than Santa Barbara. Every year, members choose Man of the Year and Woman of the Year, and their names are placed onto a perpetual trophy. I was humbled to join the list of past honorees. It is indeed special company to be amongst. Doreen Pankow once again -- and for the sixth year in a row! -- was praised for her service to the club, a well-deserved award. The business meeting portion concluded with the installation of the new officers for 2016. Steve Kaller is moving from Treasurer to Vice President, with Jim Brown taking over the Treasurer position. Other elected Board positions remain the same for 2016. Silent Auction results were announced, with thanks offered to all the bidders for their generous support of our designated charity, Tri-Counties Make-A-Wish Foundation. Door prizes were awarded, and although they are never too valuable, the friendly rivalries and “unfair table favorites” perceived in jest are always fun to watch. Closing remarks wishing everyone a happy holiday season concluded our fun and productive gathering. The lucky few loaded up their door prizes, the silent auction items were distributed, and everyone headed homeward with tummies full of grub and smiles on their faces. = JANUARY 2O16 AUSPUFF DE R S unday morning on December 13th dawned sunny and crisp, perfect weather for the Holiday Brunch. Fortunately, El Nino (is it ever going to come?) held off for another few days. New for 2015 was our venue, the beautiful and picturesque Spanish Hills Country Club in Camarillo. With the popularity of the Holiday Brunch growing every year, Spanish Hills was able to offer one room large enough to accommodate the soldout crowd of 150 Porsche enthusiasts. Per tradition, each guest brought an unwrapped toy for donation to the Unity Shoppe in Santa Barbara. 15 Santa Barba Annual Holid AUSPUFF JANUARY 2O16 DE R 16 ara Region day Brunch DE R JANUARY 2O16 AUSPUFF 17 SBR Board of Directors for 2016 Elected to lead our region for the calendar year 2016 are (l-r): Activities Chair Doreen Pankow, Vice President Steve Kaller, President Mike Hodson, Secretary Howard Rubenstein, and Treasurer Jim Brown. By all accounts, this was the largest gathering yet of car clubs from all over Southern California. Once again this year, Santa Barbara Region gathered at dawn (see Ted Lighthizer’s photo above) and 21 The Tech Report PCM 4.0 and The “Connected Car” BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor I t cannot be overstated how much the Internet revolution has permeated every facet of modern life. More and more everyday devices and appliances are now “connected” to the Internet to enhance functionality and efficiency, so it was only a matter of time before the automobile followed the same path. The notion of a “connected car” is not entirely new. General Motors has long offered its OnStar mobile concierge and emergency service, but during the past several model years, a number of automakers have introduced connectivity features such as Internet access and a built-in WiFi hotspot. Even third-party purveyors such as insurance companies are driving the automotive connectivity movement; many offer plug-in devices that monitor driving habits and transmit the data to the insurer in exchange for reduced rates. As ever, regulatory concerns are also spurring Porsche and other automakers into action. The European Union recently adopted an initiative that requires all new cars sold in the EU be equipped with an “eCall” emergency communication feature by April 2018. The eCall system will automatically contact emergency services in the event of a serious accident. Emergency responders will be notified of the vehicle’s location and the severity of the impact (which is determined by the vehicle’s existing crash sensors for the airbag system) to determine the appropriate response. Similar initiatives are likely in the pipeline in the US and elsewhere, so the realization of a “connected car” is more urgent than ever. AUSPUFF JANUARY 2O16 DE R 22 While Porsche has always been at the forefront of engine and chassis technology, the marque has traditionally lagged behind its fellow German automakers in terms of body electronics, comfort/ convenience features, and infotainment technology. As a purveyor of driver’s cars, Porsche’s priorities are logical. However, because the company is seeking to increase its market share and appeal to new customers, it is ever more important to implement the latest and greatest infotainment features to meet consumer expectations. Porsche has offered its Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system since the 1999 model year. The first PCM system featured audio controls, an onboard trip computer, CD-ROM-based GPS navigation, and GSM telephone capabili- dubbed PCM 4.0 and will first be installed in the upcoming 2017 911 models (see the October 2015 column for more info). However, the system should soon be available across the Porsche model range. In the vein of modern smartphones and tablets, the PCM 4.0 interface is entirely based upon its seven-inch touchscreen, which uses the now ubiquitous tap/ pinch/drag method of interaction. The improved navigation system uses Google Earth and Streetview to enhance the map displays, and real-time traffic data is used to calculate the optimum route. The user’s iPhone can be “tethered” to the PCM via wired connection or Bluetooth, and its telephone/text messaging features and a limited amount of “apps” can be accessed directly with Apple Car- ...the PCM 4.0 interface is entirely based upon its seven-inch touchscreen, which uses the now ubiquitous tap/pinch/drag method of interaction. ties via a SIM card reader. A 5” LCD screen displayed the relevant data, and a knob/ button interface provided PCM control. Over the years, Porsche steadily evolved the PCM system, first with DVD-based navigation for PCM 2.1 and a hard drive and Bluetooth/iPod capabilities for PCM 3.0. Version 3.0 also saw the introduction of a touchscreen interface, which reduced the number of hard buttons and knobs. Porsche recently unveiled the latest version of PCM, which will presumably be Play. Along with other PCM functions, the iPhone can be controlled by the touchscreen interface, voice control, or by the steering wheel controls if the vehicle is equipped with the multifunction steering wheel. PCM 4.0 also provides the interface for the new connectivity features. Internet access is achieved by either a dedicated SIM card or by using a mobile device as a wireless “hot spot.” Either way, this allows the entire car to become a mobile hot spot for other WiFi-capable devices. Porsche will offer Porsche Connect and Porsche Car Connect smartphone apps to further enhance the PCM 4.0 system. The Connect app is available for both the iPhone and Android systems, but it seems geared towards the latter as it allows access to smartphone data via the PCM system, which is already possible for iPhone users via Apple CarPlay. The Car Connect app (also available for both the iPhone and Android devices) allows the user to control a number of vehicle functions such as remote locking, mirror folding, and power windows. Fuel level, tire pressures, and trip computer info can controls of a brand new Jeep Cherokee and disable the vehicle. As in the “wired” world, automakers and authorities will need to be vigilant to stay ahead of potential hackers and protect consumers. Besides the Orwellian concerns about Big Brother monitoring our whereabouts and driving habits, there are more practical concerns in the world of connected cars. Automakers simply cannot compete with the makers of consumer electronics in terms of infotainment devices. The gestation cycle of a new generation of smartphone or tablet is down to six months, while the lifespan of an automotive plat- vice manufacturers and third party could offer numerous adaptors and mounting brackets to neatly integrate any popular mobile device to the particular automobile’s interior. The mobile device’s existing touchscreen and voice control interfaces would be used to control infotainment and convenience functions, and their vastly superior GPS navigation would be seamlessly integrated and enhanced by a GPS antenna booster built into the vehicle. As new mobile devices are introduced, they could be easily adapted to any vehicle with such a system. Alas, the above may be pie in the sky, but current automotive connectivity technology is at least offering a better way to update the software of the plethora of computers and control modules that populate a modern vehicle. The normal method requires access to a factory level scan tool, which is connected directly to the car for a lengthy software update process. In true Silicon Valley fashion, the Tesla electric car company offers wireless software updates in the same manner of a smartphone. Porsche itself has stated that it will offer a similar service for its upcoming Mission E electric car (see last month’s column for more info); expect this concept to proliferate the automotive world in upcoming years. If all of the above scares you, there is a simple solution: Drive an older, non-connected Porsche! = At first blush, all of these connectivity features sound great and promise the utmost in comfort and convenience. However, privacy and security concerns abound. Consumer advocates worry that automakers and insurance companies are already collecting massive amounts of data about driving habits and vehicle location. Even murkier is the question of government jurisdiction over such data and if it can be used as evidence in a court of law. Equally worrying is the susceptibility of connected cars to hacking and data breaches. As outlined in a recent issue of Panorama magazine, expert hackers participating in a controlled experiment were able to remotely access the powertrain form is a minimum of four to five years. Modern vehicle complexity and manufacturing logistics make it impossible to upgrade in-car electronics at nearly the same rate of mobile devices, which renders many infotainment and navigation systems obsolete in a few short years. Your author does not tend to overtly use this column as an op-ed piece, but there is a clear direction that automakers should take in terms of infotainment systems: Instead of spending inordinate sums of money on developing rival systems that are clunky to use and already obsolete by the time they hit the market, automakers should band together and develop a standard interface to accommodate existing tablet and smartphone designs. The vehicle would essentially be a mobile docking station for the owner’s tablet or smartphone. Automakers, mobile de- Chris Andropoulos is the Service Manager and a technician at Schneider Autohaus in Santa Barbara (a Der Auspuff advertiser).
