Park Two Miler is a great way to move beyond
1.5-kilometer and 1-mile swim events. It’s also
an excellent opportunity to preview a portion of
the Little Red Lighthouse Swim course. After
the event, all racers, volunteers and their friends
are invited to join the NYC Swim staff at
Coogan’s Restaurant (Broadway at 169th Street)
for an informal pay-as-you-go party.

Tips for Helping Mom, Dad,
Grandma or Grandpa Go Online
Unlike today’s kids who are computersavvy by the time they reach kindergarten,
seniors never had online opportunities growing up. But millions of people in their 70s, 80s and 90s are now clicking away
online, and many more are joining the Internet community.
Why do seniors go online? To stay connected with family
and friends, enjoy photos, find travel destinations, follow
news, weather and sports, find recipes and coupons, share
their hobbies, or study history or genealogy, to name a few
reasons. For many seniors, Internet access can also reduce feelings of social isolation and encourage healthy brain activity.
One World War II veteran recently got a laptop computer—his first ever—at age 85 and says he is “having a
ball” with e-mail and web surfing. He mainly wanted Internet service to keep in touch with his son and Army buddies.
His son helped him by choosing the computer, connecting
it and teaching him the basics for a couple of hours a week
to get started.
If you’re introducing your parent, grandparent or another
senior to the Internet, here are some tips.
1. Select appropriate hardware and
software. If your folks want to go online primarily to
connect with family and friends, look for a basic laptop model
for e-mail, and consider one that can also accommodate
a web cam. Actually seeing the grandkids or out-of-town
friends while talking with them is a great experience!
2. Assume they’re landing on a new planet.
Depending on their technology aptitude, the mechanics of
a mouse, drop-down menu and click-and-drag may be completely alien. Skip the acronyms and take each activity
a step at a time. Also consider an “intro to the Internet”
class at a public library or community senior center.
3. Establish security rules. Have a serious
conversation about spam, identity theft and Internet crooks.
Insist that your senior loved one does not open e-mails from
unknown senders or provide personal information such as
Social Security numbers, passwords or banking data online
at any time. (Save Internet shopping as an advanced course
for later.)

4. Take time to explain the big picture.
With a few sketches and some clever analogies, you can
explain how Mom or Dad fits into the World Wide Web,
the concept of home pages, e-mail addresses and Internet
service providers. A book about Internet basics can also help.

5. Keep it simple. Delete or hide anything unnecessary on their screen at the moment. For starters, try
paring the desktop down to a few simple shortcuts such
as “Search” and “E-mail.” Write brief instructions and
relevant e-mail and web addresses for easy reference.
Practice basic e-mail messages before discussing attachments, photos and other functions.
6. When in doubt, exit. As new “students,” they’ll
feel compelled to politely read and respond to every pop-up,
warning and callout that plasters their screen. Advise them
to delete these without guilt. If they unwittingly enter an
online gaming community, simply reboot. It’s okay.
7. Let them practice computer while you
practice patience. Web newcomers need extra
time to navigate. Once you demonstrate a skill or activity,
ask them to do it several times. The slow pace may try your
patience, but they’ll learn nothing if you whiz from control
panel to Google in three keystrokes.
8. Encourage! As with any new task or toy, if the stress
outweighs the fun, the keyboard will collect dust. Wellplaced words of encouragement and sending a warm e-mail
or two a day will inspire greatness.

9. Have fun. What may start as a daunting task will

basketball and the NFL Championship, and bigger than
